personally, i buy only the cars i want and frankly i dont spend any money on the premium ones. besides i open all of them since i dont have the atention to sell any of mine. i love cars and this is a way for me to collect cars that i want for a whole lot cheaper. i buils shelves for them and display them at home, theming some of them with brands or countries. the amount of pleasure i get buying a new one is worth enough the price tag for me and given that i could be spending a lot more on other things, i think i am very happy i picked up this habit

As someone with around 2000 cars (and no that is not an exaggeration) I can confirm it’s an addiction. I literally hop about from store to store just searching for them like a sniffer dog 😂. However I am quite picky with what I buy- I only buy the realistic ones (I hate the fantasy ones) and I never really buy the monster trucks.

Yes if you don't go beyond Treasure Hunts that today's fools are after. To populate certain commons like Japanese Hyandis means you are going broke and over the cliff levels he discussed in this video. There isn't no value in any Hot Wheels car because nobody has decided which real car is the one future generations idealize.

I buy what I really, REALLY like, and I've paired down the collection by gifting to kids. Makes me feel good, and the investment itself isn't horrendous. For the price of one of my nicer watches, I have an entire Diecast collection (Hot Wheels, Tarmac, Inno, MiniGT, etc.). You're going through the motions here, and I recommend you sell in bulk, or gift away MANY of the common mainlines. Same with premiums. Get to a point where you're not a hoarder, but an actual collector, meaning, you collect certain brands, or car types, like JDM, or Porsche, or a brand like Nissan. You'll get a lot more focus and appreciate the actual hunts to find something rare/unique.

It's definitely anything but a pure/true hobby... It's funny because any time an argument, question of take or poll comes up; Most "collectors" will say something along the lines of "it's not that serious"....... Well my friends. Last time I checked, last I frikkin knew. You don't put so much time, money & effort into something that isn't serious. You don't get stressed about something that isn't serious. You don't feel a need to compete in something that isn't serious. That's a whole lot of irony & contradiction. So to those "collectors" who give that "it ain't that serious" response (especially when they are known for pallet raiding & hoarding) I have to say, make it make sense bro! & To the good examples of collectors out there. Thank you for being that good example in this hobby. I don't mean any hate towards anyone. Just genuinely asking for a clarification. I just wish we would all not get so blinded by the greed & potential money in it. Keep it pure & help each other out, that's all. It would make this hobby truly as fun, enjoyable & awesome as possible

A Hobby needs a precision focus. You also have to consider your financial status and the present life that you have. It goes deep to question them when you already went off the deep end because there is no focus on a specific model, toyline, and reasoning. Diecast Collecting is Addicting, but also consider the “Need” from the “Wants” and find the reason to question why? IMHO, I collect diecast cars not for display. Yes, for reviews but also, for “toy photography” not necessarily taken in a white back ground or just “taking a photo” as what the term meant. Personally, I bring some of them outdoors and tell a story behind it through the image produced with a specific model. Sometimes, I wrote my purchase pf that model because there’s a story behind it. Not just showing off a video buying it from that place. Some don’t even open them anymore thinking of the “resale value” in the secondary market, and why hoarding and scalping theme takes the fun. It’s just a personal opinion how I used to enjoy the hobby. Any form of hobby should be a reasoning as most collectors I see just display them and that’s the common appreciation. You have to find the focus to streamline what you really like and then take that hobby to the next level and not just display them.

Buying things isn't a hobby, and nor is indiscriminately gathering everything you can find. Collecting is only a hobby when it reflects your taste, which means rejecting some things. When you are: - buying things that you don't even display or take out of their packaging, you just put them in a box; - buying things you don't really want just because they are part of a series or 'I collect X so I need that' or something like that; - buying multiple of the exact same thing (without any intention to customise them); then you've stepped over the line into addiction/hoarding, IMO. Then there's reselling, which is just pure parasitic behaviour. I find myself wondering if Mattel realise they effectively run a grey economy and feel some sort of pressure to keep it going, or are just too inept to make some big changes to their procedures to stop it...

Surely you have some sort of organisation? I had everything on display on shelves, sorted by make and model and date. I had to move so the shelves are gone but there's a plan for more shelves, and until I scrape the money together for that, they're boxed in groups in little containers like fruit boxes and other food packaging within larger cardboard boxes- all the Lamborghinis in here, the Nissans in that box etc. "I want to customise this car I have, so I went and bought another one because it's easier than looking for it" is a pretty pathetic state to let things get to, I have to tell you.

Not necessarily an addiction, but more likely 'hobby fatigue'. Do something else for a while and come back to the hobby later. Have a clear out of the excess stuff you own and keep only the things you really want. Put the money away you would normally spend on the hobby and let that accumulate over time and put it towards other life enriching experiences.

Diecast dead? Todays marketing has transformed our mental reasoning from believing in the super natural to 'dreaming an experience without any scale'. From child, teenager, adult or an elderly, in our minds we can dream ourselves being 'superman..barbie...' Resulting in big corporate brands are making more by selling the experience rather than the actual product. From Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, a huge percentage of their turnover is made by their merchandise... Most consumers can't even judge enjoying a fake.. only feeling what others say about them.... Most collectors are, including myself, fixing a craving desire. As long its not obsetting anybody, there is nothing wrong, only be aware, stay both on the ground, nevrr loose yourself, and never believe the outside world, from YT to any brand. I choose to live in my toyshop with 1:1 toys, surrounded by 1000nds of diecast, all supporting my dream, priceless and to be dumped when I die....in less than a decade...

Not wanting to brag, but if even a well established manufacturer specifically want to buy your 'old rubbish (family remarks), as their R&D, miss their true heritage (prewar sportscar), of wich very scarce diecast is ever released, collecting is gaining knowledge. It looks obsessive for many, but trying to mimic the prewar art deco period, through technology & art, toys etc. ones dreamworld is ignited and you will be surprised as how much in todays diecast is copied from that era. Collecting is often associated with investing but before our heritage became valuable, my stuff was really scrapmetal. Now certainly everybody gets mad and even museums are bland mausoleums.. at least I still play, restore and enjoy the old. Keep money affordable and marginal in your hobby and dont ignore, include the family.. an old geezer.

This is what most diecast collectors go through. Eventually you just learn to specialize. One manufacturer. One segment. One car manufacturer. One model. Cars vs trucks… Me, it’s HW premiums only, and only American muscle cars. No real riders and I’m out. That keeps its simple. Especially these days where it’s all JDM and European for Hot Wheels. NEVER COLLECT MAINLINES. Those are for children.
