i run Aem socks on my filters. they do help to shed water and keeping the large debris out and keep the filters cleaner longer. For daily driving I would totally sock them both. Now that you said it, you may as well get the socks. Your luck is hopefully on the upside now.

I got my Hellion sleeper kit last spring. And i was freaking out when i had to drive it in a rain. I called them like 3 times to confirm that. For all of you who wonder about difference between two, zanders filters are right there and on mine, from turbos i have a silicone/rubber hoses coming up a little, so on a left side i think it is around 6-8 inches long and passenger side about 8-10 inches long, filers somewhat sit higher. This kinda rain on a video short drives are okay. If the rain is heavy i sit at gas stations wait for it to pass (all tho i been told by hellion that even heavy rain is fine). If you wonder if you can take 1000 miles trip with set up like that, probably not.
@GamerNRetro4 жыл бұрын
Good video and you bring up a good point about the sleeper kit. Makes complete sense but thats never crossed my mind. Maybe you can fab a splash guard or a brush guard to divert water away from the turbos.
@gregwilliams43804 жыл бұрын
You are supposed to have a oil film for your K&N filters which should keep most water out. As long as your not in a full puddle pulling water directly in the filters
@DownSouthRacing4 жыл бұрын
For reference I don't even run filters on my low mount setup just turbo guards and I have almost 4,000 miles on mine rain, snow, or shine when the car isn't broken at least. There is some physics explanation as to why water won't go up in there unless you literally drive though water that is as high as the turbos. I would almost think running a filter is more a risk tho brother, if they get damp then it will hinder the airflow going in. The turbo will burn off any small droplets but if the filters get soaked you could have a problem. Good video tho I should add. Content has been solid lately 👍🏼

I can tell you for a fact you can hydrolock your engine. I built a kit for my car in 2007. I made a full shield and everything. One morning heading to work (while raining) I was behind a couple cars that hit a puddle. I couldn’t react fast enough so I hit it and that was it. The engine ingested water and I was towed home. Low mounts are for good weather drivers unless you put the inlets high into the engine bay.
@jonathannoe41004 жыл бұрын
A shield that attaches to k member and bolts to backside of the turbo would be great. Maybe bolted to k member and the use two bolts on turbo housing to attach the other end. Just thought. Great video 👍

Unless you go into a puddle that is deep enough to reach the intake of the turbo I dobut water will be an issue unless the filter gets soaked and blocks airflow. The moisture that will get in will evaporate within compressor housing. If it's a lot of water it will get stuck in the intercooler and form a "plug". Unless somehow the turbo is submerged momentarily. If water gets into the pistons it's like a small headgasket leak, I dobut it would be anything enough to cause a hydrolock

Wait a minute bud. Everything under the car is soaked but magically the filters are dry???? I would think the turbos sucked water through the filters and air through them causing them to dry. @zander13 just received a answer to your video from Hellion Turbo... Read their response below:Hi Rick, Thanks for that link, I watched the video in its entirety. I think he should have named the video "why is my suspension rattling in the rain", lol. Our system includes 4" 45 degree couplers that place the filters next to the engine. However, many of our customers will mount the filters directly to the turbos. We recommend to those customers that they install a filter wrap/sock (I know K&N makes them, and I'm fairly confident there are other manufacturers as well). If purchasing one of our systems, and If you were to drive through rain often, I recommend running the rain socks OR running the system as designed, and installing the supplied couplers that put the filters up higher next to the engine. I had a 2010 Challenger SRT8 with one of our turbo systems with the filters directly on the turbos. I ran that car through a car wash with undercarriage wash every weekend for the better part of two years. I did have the K&N filter wraps installed. I had zero issues. Over the years (I've been here 13 years) I've never received a call, or email, from a customer with reports of any type of damage caused by rain/snow/etc. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, and I hope you're having a nice weekend. Jeff

The problem is my Bro in Law hydro locked a stock renault savanna 7 seater by driving through a large puddle that every one else was fine driving through, my sisters Friend did the same thing in a renault espace an old one and I actually did the same with a Nissan Almera.that was 2 years old and it was due in each case to the air intake being very low down and no protection from it sucking in water in each case we were told we were not the only ones this has happened to renault eventually moved the air intake as did Nissan but not until it became a bigger than a few problem. Zander you have oil coated filters I have a feeling unless you go under water you will be pretty fine as if I am not mistaken I have read before a water particle is too big to pass through but I am sure that was on a K&N.

Is the popping your suspension or your car sucking water and having minor misses?
@CrazeCracker794 жыл бұрын
Well as I'm glad to hear your findings to be all good, I just want to add some food for thought.. Those filters, if relavent to the K&N, have an oil soaked application to coat the fibers, so that is a good thing. But, the filters are very loose and therefore less restrictive, giving opportunity for finer particulates to get through. Also, with the air flowing into the turbos, spinning faster as you gas it, I would raise the question that IF water was getting to them would the airflow possibly be "drying" the housing as its running and minimizing the evidence of water residue being present..??? Basically, might have there been more entrance of water that would be undetected getting through..think of it like a backwards air hand dryer.. Also, is there any existing extensions to the under belly pan that can be installed or would it be possible to fabricate something to cover the turbo mounting areas?? Like some higher and race style cars, with complete flat bottomed pans..

I’m no turbo expert by any means but what keeps you from running air filter relocation kits to each turbo to get the intake filters higher off the ground and away from foreign particles such as water? It would be very similar to an NA car when relocating the filters for the intake but it may be different for turbo cars and more efficient to keep the filters right on the turbo tho, I’m not sure, just a thought

I am confused with you video. Your car died twice from what I can see in the video. You are recording from the Go Pro and from POV. Each time your car died, its a cut away from what you are previous filming. At 2:55 you are talking and 2:56 all of sudden you are starting the car. Both instances, we never see the car actually die. Same situation at 8:41, I would think if you are running video the whole time, we would see the car dying. Also, at the end, I did not see any mention or concern about the car dying twice. I enjoy watching your video, but just confused with this video. Hope everything turns out well...
