Right? I never thought about these things, but as soon as Jenny says something, it seems so obvious. It's sad that whoever designed these dolls either didn't know or didn't care about how little girls play with toys. Also, it sucks that the way to make toys for "empowering" girls means that they have to be tough and all about justice, and any aspect of fashion or drama play is clearly considered 'low' play.

I know, it's amazing. Usually media either talks down or makes fun of young girls (and teenage girls too) so much, and it's refreshing to see someone who actually respects it, even when she's lightly poking fun at it. Girls are so often made fun of for every single thing they do, and I love that jenny doesn't do that, and instead understands it and explains it in a completely understandable way to outside people who may not get it.

Seriously!! I was an only child with very few friends my age, and my mom, awesome as she is, was always very much the “feminist tomboy” type when she was a kid. I loved dolls and pretty much no one around me really understood why they appealed to me, so I always felt kind of weird and embarrassed. It makes me really happy to see someone fundamentally understand and explain why exactly little kids (both boys and girls!) enjoy dolls, and how specifically they like to play with them without giving it a sexist or “passive” spin. A little girl enjoying dolls doesn’t mean she loves traditional gender roles or is obsessed with her appearance, it just means she likes playing with little plastic humans and having them mimic how regular sized humans act and talk to each other in fun and interesting ways. It’s a pretty normal instinct for kids, both male and female, and I wish it wouldn’t have all these weird “sexist social conditioning” ideas assigned to it. I was definitely a strong believer in gender equality as a kid, and my Barbies used to go on fun little adventures as spies and explorers just as often as they dressed up for parties. Just because it was fun putting little clothes and accessories on little people and having them take care of even littler pets doesn’t mean the plastic people brainwashed me into having no ambitions beyond looking good.

When I was a kid I had two of the same mermaid barbie (coincidence, two people bought me the same birthday present) and I never played with them at all UNTIL my mom bought me a packet of realistic-looking plastic sharks, about 20-30cm long each. From then on every bathtime was just barbie Jaws, absolute carnage, indiscriminate murder all the time. Mom later told me that those sharks were the best $10 she ever spent 😂 Point is, you gotta leave kids play options open because they won't always play the way you expect them to.

I can attest to this. I had a bunch of playmobil as a kid that I would play with intermittently, that was until I went round my friend’s house and she had gotten a playmobil plane (like a plane you could put the little figures in, it was pretty big). From there, every time we would play with playmobil it would all be plane crashes, robberies and home invasions, basically the most traumatic stuff we could come up with for our little playmobil families to go through. Kids play with toys in weird ways if you give them enough free reign.

Honestly, doing Padme without her fabulous, extravagant, glamorous and fashion-forward outfits and gowns is offensive. No little girl wants jumpsuit blaster Padme. I would buy Padme and all her fabulous gowns if they just made it happen. I want the queen of Naboo gown, all her other gowns, her little less loud politician wear, and instead of that vest, that jumpsuit outfit needs that fabulous scarf thing. And not only for the fashion but also for story-telling reasons, her wedding gown and the gown she was wearing during her funeral.

@@oliviaspring9690 Not really. To pick an obvious example, lowering prices increases sales but not necessarily revenue. There are also choices that would be good for consumers without necessarily increasing sales. "Anything that increases production costs" is an obvious one. Another obvious one, albeit less applicable to dolls, is being up-front and clear about the potential dangers a product poses instead of cramming them into a disclaimer that, for legal purposes, exists. And, of course, for every obvious example there are thousands of complicated, technical ones.

I know this is old, but something else that might play a bit into it is the lack of joints. If you look at the Monster High dolls, they have more joints than the average fashion doll- wrist, elbows, shoulders, neck, hips, and knees. If they want to play with the idea of action-adventure fashion dolls, then the dolls need a wider range of motion. The lack of arm joints is frustrating to look at in the Forces of Destiny dolls. Also, why is there no Twi' lek doll? Even before I was introduced to Star Wars, I knew what a Twi' Lek was and associated it with the series. It seems somewhat obvious, and they could even use a Sith one to introduce conflict.

When my little cousins have their Monster High dolls get into fights, they just kind of swing them at each other. Granted, they are quite little indeed, and having highly poseable dolls is _definitely_ a plus for reasons other than striking action poses.

Yeah. I was just barely too old to be into Monster High during its heyday, but I was always a little jealous that my little sister’s dolls had so much more potential in regards to posing and style because they had more joints and removable bits than my Barbies did. Granted, it also meant that we were more likely to lose poor Clawdine’s little hands and Cleo’s elbows might snap off completely, but still.

in Momo: A Tale of Time there's a scene where the main character tries to play with a Barbie doll parody, but it's ruined, because it's a talking doll. "If she wouldn't have talked Momo could have imagined what she said and they could have had a wonderful conversation. You really understand what little girls and collectors want from their dolls. I have a 5 year old niece that I watch/play with every weekend. She LOVES the Monster High dolls for all the reasons you said. She has 26 of them but she always needs more because of potential storylines and because they are all so unique. She loves Catty Noir because she is a pop star and so she spends a lot of time singing to me which is SO adorable. I think the Monster High movies are cute. They have good messages on accepting people even though they look weird. And I like that the non verbal Zombie girl is the genius. My Niece also loves to play with my brother's old Star Wars action figures from the 70s and 80s. She told me they were over 100 years old. lol She makes up all sorts of stories with them because they are small enough to put in doll houses and other playsets. She would probably like the Leia doll just because she recognizes her but would be disappointed with the clothes being molded on. She watches Clone Wars and has seen the first three original movies. Her favorite scene is in Jedi when Leia rides the speeder bike. I collect Monster High dolls. (i'm goth) I have 15. I also collect the mins and the vinyls. You should do a Go fund me and make your own line of dolls. You really see into all our souls.

I'm just wondering why they didn't use Hera or Asoka, they're both involved in Clone Wars and Rebels. Are they saying that they're not marketable to kids? Because I find that very wrong. As a little girl who watched Clone wars, Asoka was the cute, bubbly young padawan to Anakin who had a great dynamic with him, then grew up and had to face her former master who had fallen to the dark side with the skills she's learned on both on her own and from him, and Hera is an independent but also caring person who is a pilot AND has a romantic interest they could market her with because apparently death means nothing to Disney doll lines. Also, they both cannonically met. They exist in the same time as Leia, but older than her because Leia is actually pretty young in Rebels.

The ones (like these) that just make them move their arm up and down are universally disappointing.

He-Man was bizarrely good value for a toy series that existed just to sell you the toy series I think. There was a serpent-themed He-Man one that you took his head off, filled his chest cavity with water, and then when you pressed in his head he functioned as a darling little plant mister. I suppose that comes under missiles really but it was the one I was keen on (did Ram Man have a springloaded leg bounce thing? That seems fairly ok, so long as all the ramming is vertical.) There was a skunk thing whose "action" was that his head was made out of really smelly and unpleasantly soft plastic, but you kind of had to use your imagination that it smelled worse than action figure plastic. Crucially few of these quirks appeared like giant levers in the toy's back, and didn't interfere with the standard aspects of that sort of figure. Oh god, and something that was like a multilimbed alien lego guy? And there was a red one that was even odder. I didn't really watch the show but those were fantastic, even if they barely count as action features ("you can unclip his head and put two arms growing out of there!" is an action feature to me, at any rate.) Then the other one I had was a Thundercats one that had lightup eyes, but you had to power it by pressing a gigantic plastic capsule containing the battery (I can no longer picture what the in-universe packaging claimed it was but I think it could be worn on a finger?) into its back. I think it may have had the "press switch to make arms move up and down" as a bonus for what that's worth. I do remember being really passionate about Thundercats as a kid, but I can't think of a single good reason why

Connor notyerbidness it has adult moments but no it isn’t ‘very adult’. It’s still a space fantasy with magic heroes and villains. Adult moments, sure, but not inherently adult. For every murder, there’s a wacky sound effect that comes with it. Most of the fan base became fans when they were young children. I think that’s proof enough. They do seem to be trying to grow the story a bit more because of that, since most of the original fan base is old and can now watch worse than PG13. That’s the problem they seem to have run into. Whether to keep recruiting young kids with for children content which was the original purpose of the brand, or cater to older fans who buy merchandise and in doing so recruit their kids. I don’t envy them at all. I think there can be a fine line but they just have to think about it more.

I was going to say god damn you Jenny now I want to buy a Kylo doll and put it in a spangled dress and then just, I don’t know, display it somewhere? Bring it with me to the movies? What do adults do with the toys they buy? For real, no judgement (I’ve sunk hundreds of dollars into shirts & backpacks I only use in Disney Parks so my house is the thinnest of glass) but I don’t know other than putting it on a shelf & knowing I own it?

I buy dolls and i just leave them in their packages and try to display them in my room. lot of my dolls though are in storage because I don't have space left in my room. years ago i did buy Transformers, took them out of the boxes, transformed them, put the stickers on t hem, pose them, but i never had them fight each other or do a story line. I had them out of their boxes for years and change the poses but they are in their boxes now.

4 feet long? I don't wanna do complex math or look up accurate dimensions here, so just some broad estimates: If a 12-inch figure represents (say) a 5'6" female, then a 4-ft Millennium Falcon is about 22 scale feet long to them. Like the size of a street vehicle. As I (vaguely) recall, Falcon exteriors on set were like 75-100 feet long, so a to-scale Falcon would have to measure at least 15 actual feet. Like an actual street vehicle.

I am an avid doll collector. I didn’t realize that the three dolls you held up were different people. And the articulation looks cheap. All of your observations were on point. I looked at these dolls when I first saw your thumbnail on Amazon-I kept staring at the picture because I couldn’t believe that it look like their clothes were sculpted on. And I didn’t believe it because the original price of the dolls-, their clothes should’ve been removable. Sculpted clothes are literally for happy meal toys.
@InkRose
@InkRose 6 жыл бұрын
When first seeing the line, I was repulsed by the molded on clothes (fabric clothes ALWAYS look better on bigger dolls) , dumb action feature that takes away from poseability (and it really is just annoying to deal with when playing, when I was a kid I hated any dolls or figures that had action features), and most of all, the terrible way their hair is styled. The Ahsoka doll looks by far the best out of the line, specifically because she doesn't have hair so her molded lekku look great and appropriate. Her colorful design also helps her to stand out, unlike the three white brunette girls, Ahsoka is UNIQUE. In a universe full of cool looking aliens you'd think we'd actually get a lot more colorful looking alien girls to be made into dolls. Where's my Hera doll? Aalya Secura? Shaak Ti? Bariss Offee? Luminara Unduli?
@Acerbium

The lack of new and original alien main or supporting characters is one of my biggest concerns with the new movies. Human diversity is freaking great in a universe like Star Wars, but why are the important people almost EXCLUSIVELY human? Sad to see it spill into their toy lines.

Ink Rose Not to be that guy but, didnt bariss commit a bombing??? That would probably scare Disney too much. ( i mean then she got blamed for poisoning felucia with aayla but ya know) I still want a bariss tbh shes very important. If they made an aayla they would definitely change her costume or edit it mildly, just to cover the cleavage. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't make a luminara or shaak ti though, I actually kinda want these to happen, an animated version would be really cool. The only excuse for hera is that they might not want to make the rest of the rebels cast but the shouldn't have made the mandalorien suit girl, the one with pants on and pants off functions. i low key want them to attempt to make an anakin doll, you know, mass child murder. Or maybe like a oola doll. Naked slaves, yay.

TundranTiconderoga yeah that's true, *yet barriss was labeled as a terrorist in canon* , I dont think Disney wants to market someone that's considered as a terrorist, well a terrorist to yoda. But then again, your probably right, if you think about it . Everyone does have a pretty big kill count. Also, i don't think ashoka couldn't have been left out. Shes by far one of the most popular characters, outside of the movie characters. (If I could find the clip of yoda saying terriorst I would link it. I think it was the scene where anakin crashes and yoda calls him right after. Maybe not, but someone definitely says it. Things have changed though, i don't think Disney would even use that word in rebels. [But they would confirm that the empire has been using luminara corpse to draw out jedi, fun times guys.] Overall its not a big deal. I'm just a bit needy lmao)

L. C. So it can mostly be boiled down to the pay being pretty bad, and its domino effects. We were payed by the second, and the amount meant that I would have to do about 10 seconds a day for it to be worth my time with all the taxes and other fees I’d have to pay from it. 10 seconds a day is about South Parks quota for reference (from what I hear). Then on top of that they were a bit too picky on the retakes as I remember, given the pay. Plus a bit too demanding of my time given the pay, both on quality/retakes and deadlines. I hope thats clear enough, I don’t really want to get too into specifics.

@@silbrandir No, thanks, that was very interesting. I read a similar comment recently from a background artist on the Ever After High webisodes, except he was sad at the cancellation because he'd LOVED working on the projects, the aesthetics, the quality, everything. And watching a random EAH webisode compared to a FoD webisode, the difference is pretty stark. Disney has all the money in the world and clearly COULD make an aesthetically-pleasing, well-paid, and high-quality web series (not to mention doll line), but it's quite clear they couldn't have given less of a fuck.

I'm sort of surprised they didn't do a Rose doll, but with you mentioning how terrified they are of deviating from the canon they probably figured no girl would want some doll in an engineer's jumpsuit.
