The biggest issue with Fulgrim is that there are very few moments with him before the heresy. Preheresy Fulgrim is cool. He asks for cover fire thick enough to walk on. He makes sculptures of his best warriors, he consults with artists to try and get his sculptures to look better. He challenges Ferrus Manus to a weapon buildoff. When they're both done? Fulgrim heaps praise on his brother. I think Fulgrim is essentially a dudebro before the heresy, but for art instead of sports. He just doesn't get much time to DO stuff in the books.

I agree completely. There is few to non existant lore/fluff of Fulgrim, and the few scraps we get are too scarce to make something solid and say "That's Fulgrim"! And we need to add that Fulgrim when faced Ferrus He was almost a husk with little to no soul remaining in him due the laer blade possession, and when the daemon gains control and kills Ferrus (his last anchor of humanity) he dies/breaks making the Daemon gain full control of him. That's why I have my doubts about how he could outsmart Bobby G who was designed to be a master tactician.

Everyone generally liked Fulgrim. Aside from Mortarion which seriously doesn't even count as an opinion. He also treated human followers with talent the respect they deserve and loved to hang out with them like Guilliman. Fulgrim was one of the few Primarchs who genuinely loved his role and job.

I'm Glad you were able to look more into Fulgrim Rho! Fulgrim has always been My Favourite Primarch of them all, there are a Bunch of things that really showoff just how much he actually plans, as all of his plans are down to the millisecond in a battle with each planned action designed to force a planned Reaction from the Enemy. If people want to see what Fulgrim is like when he isnt putting on a Front to protect himself and his Legion, then I recommend "Fulgrim: The Palatine Phoenix" Book. As in this book Fulgrim shows his inner thoughts more as well as what he is Capable of. And with Fulgrim, I believe his Real fall to Slaanesh, was actually his Desire to learn and Improve, to Perfect. Which is one of the Easiest ways to Fall to Slaanesh in the long run.

Fulgrim's biggest tragedy is the fact that the chaos corruption was so subtle for so long that we almost forget that he was indeed CORRUPTED. Remember guys, the primarchs did not know the true nature of Chaos. The Laer blade had to corrupt him over decades, and he STILL almost killed Horus for betrayal. Also remember, Fulgrim only realized what happened at Istvaan V, and he tried to stop himself from killing him. Put some respect on his name. See Baldermorts video on Fulgrim, the man was the closest thing to perfection in the universe.

When he is still dealing with the demon influencing his thoughts, he has the opportunity to destroy Horus' fleet and stop the heresy before it begins when his fleet comes upon Horus' unawares. Fulgrim is a great and fun primarch. Particularly, pre Heresy. The primarch novel really helped a few angles get expanded on. I do enjoy the III Legion's emphasis on being more than weapons (like the XIIIth, Vth, XVth, and IXth) and seeking excellence in all things. The old index astartes article, that had the corruption flow down from on high, made it really neat. They all sought to reach a pinnacle. Change what that pinnacle was...and things get interesting. Edit: oh yeah! And his whole "I fought a freaking planet! I made a dying world live! Why does no one recognize this?" adds a cool angle. Of course he'd always want to strive for better. He had to. One step backwards, one slip up, and the hard won progress against entropy would undo it all. Being on that knifes edge had made him...cling...to accolades and trappings of success. Because of things weren't good on Chemos, they were BAD. Real bad. And getting worse. So yeah. Beat the slow death of a world. Good job, Fulgy.

I love Rogal, but it really clear in Saturnine that he doesn’t “beat” Fulgrim, he loses, he is being toyed with. Fulgrim could squash him if he wished, and that’s what Fulgrim is doing, just taking the walls in such a spectacular display to show he could. He doesn’t follow through because he gets bored, and because he doesn’t really want the siege to end
@Nyctophora

Fulgrim had such great potential. On the one hand, yes, he fell to Chaos because that is what the plot demanded. But the way he is developed, I think he fell in-universe because with all his achievements, with all his abilities, he was always insecure, never getting the praise from the Emperor he needed in order to feel that he had done a good enough job. Even with the Emperor's approval and the gift of the Aquila, the Phoenician still felt that he was catching up to his brothers - taken under Horus' wing, given the remnants of a Legion, and shown a list the length of your arm of others' victories while he was still saving Chemos from himself. It's the curse of the perfectionist to never find perfection. Fulgrim could never really enjoy his achievements, even the simple ones like paintings, because he needed someone else to tell him that he had made something good. Not only this - he was a social being, created almost without peers, gifted at talking to others and yet seldom with anyone even close to his level to talk to. Chaos whispered in his ear in the lonely watches of the night. It got into his heart through his isolation and honestly, I think if Ferrus had been able to talk to him at crucial moments, he might not have fallen at all. Fulgrim needed praise, he needed understanding, he needed a friend. He got war. And we lost the greatest innovator and diplomat the Primarchs ever had.

As an Emperors Children player… yeah… Fulgrim is underrated , as he wanted to achieve perfection in all things , including tactics… for example he could have destroyed Horus’s fleet with a sneak attack if he wasn’t ‘ given’ his deamon sword and then apparently changed his mind, before the heresy truly started….
@Iceisnice1
@Iceisnice1 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to understand how great Fulgrim was, you need not look to him - instead, look to his sons. Remember that the Emperor's Children were a mere 200 when Fulgrim was found. He had to slowly and painstakingly rebuild his legion. Consider this, and look what the Emperor's Children under Fulrgrim's leadership accomplished at the Cleansing of Laeran, at the height of their power. The Laer were technologically advanced and biologically designed for each individual to be perfect for their role. They were an absolute nightmare to fight against. The campaign was estimated to take years to complete and require no less than 3 full legions. The Emperor's Children, the smallest legion (11,000 space marines), did it in a single month, with only 700 dead. Before Fulgrim picked up the sword and everything went to hell, *that's* how elite and efficient he made his sons. Because Fulgrim didn't merely possess a desire to improve. I believe his true gift was his ability to inspire the same in the people around him; how easily he could bring out the best in others. So yes, I'd say Fulgrim is woefully underrated. He was dealt a really shitty hand (growing up working the mines on Chemos, his legion being nearly wiped out by the time he was found), but instead of succumbing to bitterness or rage like some of his equally unfortunate brothers, Fulgrim strove to overcome all the hardships in his way and do better. And that is why he's my favorite primarch.

*How much of these events are accounted to Fulgrim and not the daemon that possessed him:* With a casual flick of the wrist, Fulgrim tossed the bloodied object at Horus’s feet. Ferrus Manus’s head rolled across the black floor and came to rest with the ravaged eye sockets staring up at Horus in blind accusation. Horus looked up from the head and turned his gaze on Fulgrim, seeing again the insouciance that had infuriated him so when his brother had returned in failure from his attempt to win over the Primarch of the Iron Hands. As distasteful as it was, he knew he would have to offer congratulations. ‘Well done, Fulgrim. You have slain one of our greatest foes as you said you would, but I fail to see why you make this presentation in so private an audience. Surely you would wish our brothers to revel in your triumph?’ Fulgrim laughed, but there was a timbre to his brother’s amusement that sent a chill down Horus’s spine as he recalled where he had heard such ancient malice before… in the voice of Sarr’Kell, the entity Erebus had summoned in the heart of the Vengeful Spirit. ‘Fulgrim?’ asked the Warmaster. ‘Explain yourself.’ The Primarch of the Emperor’s Children shook his head and wagged his finger at Horus. ‘With the greatest respect, mighty Horus, you do not address Fulgrim any more.’ Horus looked into his brother’s dark eyes, seeing beyond the arrogance and superiority to what lay within. Darkness filled his brother’s core, an ancient darkness that had torn itself from the womb of a dying race with a bloody birth scream. Its existence was as old as the heavens and as fresh as the dawn. Its life was immortal and its capacity for malice infinite. ‘You are not Fulgrim,’ he breathed, suddenly wary of this intruder in his midst. ‘No,’ agreed the thing with his brother’s face. ‘Then who are you?’ demanded Horus. ‘A spy? An assassin? If you are here to kill me then I warn you I am no weakling like Fulgrim. I will break you before you can lay a hand upon me!’ Fulgrim shrugged and tossed the box he carried onto the floor with a clatter. It landed next to Ferrus’s severed head. Horus let the energised claws of his gauntlets slide out in warning. ‘Perhaps you can defeat me,’ said Fulgrim, crossing the room to pour himself a cup of wine, ‘but I have no wish to test either of us in such a fruitless and wasteful trial of combat. On the contrary, I am here to pledge myself to your cause.’ Horus glanced towards Fulgrim’s waist, and relaxed as he saw that this thing masquerading as his brother had come before him unarmed. Whatever its purpose in unveiling itself, it had not come with violence on its mind. ‘You still have not answered my question,’ said Horus. ‘Who or what are you?’ Fulgrim smiled and licked his lips with a long sweep of his tongue. ‘Who am I? I should have thought that would be obvious to one who has had dealings with other creatures of my ilk.’ Once again, Horus felt the chill that he had experienced when the Lord of the Shadows had manifested in the stone-walled lodge, raised in the heart of his flagship. ‘You are a creature of the warp?’ he asked. ‘I am indeed. What your insufficient language might call a “daemon”. A poor word, but it will have to suffice. I am a humble servant of the Dark Prince, an emissary come to aid you in your little war. //Fulgrim, P: 500-502

I think Fulgrim is maybe the most quintessential of all of the Primarchs if each of them really represents a core aspect of the Emperor. His pursuit of and obsession with perfection is a reflection of the Emperor's entire motivation for guiding humanity until it evolves to a higher, more perfect state, able to handle its own emerging psychic potential and flourish across the galaxy and beyond, free of the threats of the Warp and able to guide itself.

I dont think Fulgrim is underrated, I think anyone who reads Fulgrim, gains the appreciation he diserves, though I think Reflection Crack'd is rightfully regarded by most as a mistake. I think the Lion and 1st Legion are generally the most underrated as there isnt rly any single book one can point to that everyone can agree on as a great way to gain an appreciation for the Primarch or Legion, I would say Descent of Angels or the Primarch Book, generally, outside of Dark Angel and Lion fans, he's generally unerrated, wheras Sanguinius, Fulgrim, Khan, Horus, Dorn, Magnus, even Leman, are generally all liked, respected and remain very popular among most fanbases and are apreciated by the widest amount of fans, the 1st Legion and the Lion however, I find very underrated outside of its dedicated fanbase. I can only imagine this is due to a lack of reading up on them. Though some lore-youtubers have certainly been helping that by raising awareness on why the 1st Legion and the Lion are so highly regarded.
@The_Blood_Wraith

I am a Blood Angels and Sanguinius fan through and through with Rogal being my second favorite. I find Fulgrim and Kurze to be the most intriguing stories. Their falls are so different but both fall to various forms of Pride. Now with that said I still like the alternate theory, Sanguinius after fighting Kabanda, then Angron is close to a level of Anger that costs him to give into his own rage. He arrives first and alone to the Bridge of the Vengeful spirit and is the one that actually kills Horus. The Emperor arrives and Sanguinius blinded by his rage attacks the Emperor. Initially the Emperor only fights defensively not wanted to hurt his favored son, and tries to calm him but eventually realised after being nearly killed that Sanguinius is now completely engulfed in his rage. Especially when Sanguinius kills the normal soldiers. He is then forced to kill Sanguinius. When Dorn arrives he can see what really went down, he rushes to his fathers aid and asks him why….the emperor tells him the truth and then tells him the imperium must never know that is what happened and told Dorn the story to pass on from there. This combined with the guilt he felt for not arriving sooner is what fueled Dorns cold anger that raged through the scouring and forced him to lose track of the orders his father left before going on the golden throne and opened the door for Guilliman supplanting him while he was out fighting in the scouring.

Out of all the primarchs Fulgrim appreciated the potential of humanity more than his brothers to the point he actually did care about base humans. His arrogance coupled with his corruption was always sad to see because he stifled his own potential. But maybe the clone being perfect maybe explained. Perhaps the painting of trapping his soul maybe retconed or maybe Fabius managed to clone both body and soul and never know it. If the painting is retconed then the Clone could be the "actual" Fulgrim. But it'd be more interesting if his very soul was copied

I'd like to think that this clone is the actual Fulgrim, now housed in a new, uncorrupted body. I'm also hoping that, being uncorrupted, that the Phoenix will return to Holy Terra, which will no doubt surprise everyone, including Guilliman. But once proving his loyalty (or at least prove that he won't attempt to slice open his brother's throat a second time), and with the blessing of the Emperor, Fulgrim will be possibly be the first among his brothers to help Guilliman rebuild the Imperium they all once fought for, putting focus in teaching Humanity how to bring out the best in themselves, to become creative again. Fulgrim will likely bring about a new Renaissance for the Imperium of Man should this ever happen. But that's just me thinking out loud

@@Judge_of_Anubis05 yeah. I might be fine with at least one more loyalist Primarch returning, but after that, we need to spice things up a bit. I do have a bit of a list of people that I think should return, using the Big Blue Boyscout as my starting point: Guilliman Lion Malcador Fulgrim Russ That's just for now. The Lion is a formidable general who can outthink most of his enemies, and it's obvious at this point that GW is getting ready for his return. It would possibly take the Emperor intervening to keep Lion from killing Guilliman, but once everything is settled, the Lion can take over the reins for the Indomitus Crusade, leaving Guilliman to focus his efforts in stabilizing and rebuilding the Imperium. Malcador would be a massive boost, and it would be a nice change from having either a Primarch or the Emperor return. Unlike Guilliman, Malcador would be able to take the current situation with the Imperium in stride and really get things back on track, possibly starting with a psychic backhand to every last Inquisitor across the galaxy. Granted, he was reduced to dust upon the Golden Throne during the Heresy, but he is a Perpetual. And if the theory of the Emperor being left in a constant state of death and resurrection upon the Golden Throne is true, then that might just mean that somewhere inside the Throne Room, in a dark recess, the Sigillite is slowly reforming, returning to the Material Plane. Fulgrim as we stated could return and bring forth a new Renaissance in the Imperium. By this point I will allow another loyalist Primarch to return, and who better than the Wolf King? With him I would expect to bring knowledge that can be used to reform the Emperor's soul and restore his ancient body, and while the Imperium's finest get to work on that, Russ would join the Lion on the front lines of the Indomitus Crusade. For if Lion El'Jonson is the Hand that guides the Sword, then Leman Russ _is the Sword!_ Besides, bringing back a dead loyalist Primarch like Sanguinius or Ferus Manus wouldn't feel right.

'I broke my fingernails on raw ore, and grew blisters from heat and labour. You look down on them, blind to the beauty of their struggle. Blind to what they might become, if only someone would scrape the filth from their faces.' He reached down and lifted a child onto his shoulders. The girl laughed and clapped, unafraid of the giant, even as her mother wept. Fulgrim indicated the crowd. His voice had driven many of them to their knees. 'Look at them, my sons. He forged Ferrus' hammer, he set up and annihilated Guilliman, he beat them Ferrus. He played Perturabo for a fool. His sons are the greatest virtuosos: duelists (Akarduana and Lucius), artists, and scientists (Fabius). In Ferrus' novel, the 3rd Legion SCHOOLS the 10th repeatedly. The link between Fulgrim and Horus is not a coincidence. Horus was chosen as war master because of its political sense. He was the only one able to manage all his brother and this political aspect was part of Horus perception of war. Horus saw behind battlefields. In one novel, we have Fulgrim trying to demonstrate his superiority by taking a planet with only a handfull of marines. At the begining of this novel Fulgrim is thinking of his brothers : "With them, it always ends in blood. Blood is their only answer". Fulgrim thought otherwise.

I don't agree with saying, that Fulgrim won with Ferrus by his 'abilities and skill alone'. You just ignored fact, that it was Ferrus who was winning the duel. It was actually chaos sword that empowered Fulgrim with strenght that allowed him to defeat Ferrus. It was NOT even duel. It was like 2v1. From 40k wikipedia: 'The two Primarchs traded terrible blows, wounding one another deeply during their fierce struggle. As Ferrus pushed himself to his feet and staggered towards the wounded Fulgrim, he cried out as he brought the flaming blade towards his brother's neck. But Fulgrim lashed out as he drew the single-edged, daemonically-possessed sword he had taken from the Laer temple and blocked the descending weapon. With the power of Chaos streaming from the blade, diabolical strength flooded Fulgrim's limbs as he pushed against the power of Ferrus Manus, feeling his brother's surprise at his resistance. Fulgrim managed to surge to his feet and lashed out, his silver blade biting deep into the breastplate of Ferrus' armour, and the Primarch of the Iron Hands cried out, falling to his knees once again' What you said in video is for me big, very big understatement, almost a lie. Or the text from wikipedia is wrong? Explain me, please.

I wouldn't call Guilliman the best strategist of his brothers. Maybe number 3 or 4. He was the best civil leader and one of the most effect leaders, but comparing how effective Fulgrim was against Dorn vs Guilliman spells that out for me. He outsmarted Guilliman but the very idea he could outsmart someone like Dorn or Perturabo is practically unthinkable. Dorn basically called him Perturabo's puppet, which was true considering Dorn said it. Horus thought of Dorn as the greatest military commander among his brothers and I think Dorn proved that. Dorn held off most of the traitors with no real help until towards the end of the Heresy. I think Dorn and Perturabo are pretty much unquestionably the best strategists among the primarchs, but Guilliman is the best statesman and figurehead (and probably 3rd best strategist IMO). I do think Fulgrim is severly underrated though. He was pretty awesome before the demon sword thing. He's definitely one of the best swordsman amongst the primarchs and he's one of the smarter primarchs. He's probably one of the most balanced primarchs in terms of ability. He's not overly strong in any one area but is at least better than most at everything. Ferrus Manus was almost certainly stronger, but was less skilled. Guilliman is almost certainly smarter, but Fulgrim is smart enough. He's not the warrior that Sanguinius was or the genius of Dorn or Perturabo or a powerhouse like Magnus, but I don't think I'd rank him in the lower half of his brothers in any single category. All of the other primarchs outside of maybe Jaghatai and Horus have obvious strengths and weaknesses. Dorn may be the best strategist but is probably one of the worst politicians. Magnus is a magical powerhouse but probably ranks lower on melee combat skill. Guilliman is a brilliant statesman and tactician but is one of the weaker fighters. Lehman Russ is a top tier fighter but isn't as good a statesman or politician as some of his brothers. Fulgrim is just kinda good at everything.

What? Strategies and administration are his bread and butter , even Horus said so himself after the istavan dropsite massacre. The reason he was concerned with guilliman is coz of his vast number of ultramarines and their STRATEGIC might . Perturabo is good at destroying stuff mostly hence his siege expertise and his ability to turn a battlefield into a choke point slaughter ground, there is a reason only convicts were assigned to his legion , his tactic was to just throw more bodies into the grinder till he had his way . In the book The Emperor's Architect about Perty even a remembrancer assigned to his legion called him out for his callous behavior of throwing soldiers to their deaths carelessly. Even Dorn proved this with the Fulgrim situation where he basically says Fulgrim and his men were handed to Dorn by Perturabo on a silver platter .

@@licensed_beheader Perturabo does throw people away, but it's always to achieve the most efficient win possible (as it relates to time, not loss of life - also he's a petty bitch and doesn't care if people die). Perturabo almost never fails, and when he does it's more to his character flaws than anything. If Perturabo were concerned with not sustaining losses, he could and would do things differently, but as he calculates it the losses are at a sustainable level. He's simply a league above almost every other primarch in terms of pure intelligence. Dan Abnett called him a "demented Rogal Dorn" in an interview and I think that's fitting. The core of the main war in the Heresy was more Perturabo vs Dorn than anything else. Perturabo carried his side almost completely, and until he got reinforcements, Dorn did basically the same. I'm not saying Guilliman is bad as a strategist in wany way - Horus did fear him and rightly so. Behind Dorn he was absolutely the biggest roadblock to the traitors because they had to go through so much to contain him and he still did eventually break. But he also had a supersized legion and Perturabo was focused on reaching and breaching the imperial palace for most of the time. If Guilliman were forced to defend against Perturabo like Dorn, I don't see it going as well for him. Guilliman is the best overall leader among the Primarchs along with Horus I'd say, but in terms of military strategists I'd have to give it to Rogal and Perturabo.

@@scottphillips8607 I heavily disagree on a lot of things . First yes his wars were won but at what cost , he had potential but he was wildly unstable, like I said the remembrancer commented on his CALLOUS disregard for the lives of his soldiers. He is effective but he is no strategist . That would be Horus, lion and guilliman hence why they were also the top contenders for the warmaster title . The reason he hard carried the traitors was quite obvious , they were mostly cooked in the head due to the chaos shenanigans in play . The Luna wolves who were under the command of Horus were making a mess during the siege while those under abbadon were making serious progress , Horus at that point was merely a meat sack for the chaos gods . Millitary strategy involves the accounting of available resources for an operation and maximizing efficiency with minimum casualties on ones own side , hence why Horus was perfect at being warmaster , he knew how to play at every ones strengths and how to compensate for their weaknesses, perturabo simply just threw bodies in till the job was done . He is actually quite similar to the tyranids who simply throw bioforms till they grind you down through sheer attrition , an effective bit most definitely not efficient tactic. Remember Perturabo also tricked the lion into giving him some high tech siege engines that he later used during the siege. His mental state in on itself inhibited him from becoming the superior primarch in terms of military strategy . Drowning some of your enemies in the blood of all of your allies isn't effective in long term engagements. Also the dude purged like 20% of his legion for literally no reason. Retreat was a concept that was anthemic to him , why retreat and reevaluate your strategy for a better chance of a cleaner and swifter victory when you could send all your guardsmen to their deaths , while this tactic of attrition may be effective it causes morale issues (in fact it did , to the point entire regiments would outright refuse to work with the iron warriors hence why convicts were assigned to them . ) Perty only brought firepower and bodies to the fight nothing more .

Whilst Lucious represents the unhealthy way to deal with it, narcissistic, seeing perfectionism as achievable or achieved and being focused on others perception of them as opposed to their own perception of themselves

The Khan would have taken him out when he was a 'standard Primarch. These days and with his daemon enhanced body l doubt it. However it depends on who the author is.

But I like to see fulgrim vs the emperor's exterminator lion El' Jonson or the emperor's shadow corvus corax.

ok........ NOW I NEED A COMPLETE REFERENCE LIST THAT STATS ALL THE PRIMARCHS' HEIGHT. I am utterly confused of their relative height, besides Ferrus and Vulkan is big, Alpharius/Omegon is short... because I thought Vulkan was the tallest, but maybe not?

fulgrim's nature is by all accounts OP, perfection by its nature would be perfection in all things. that means he is better than everyone at everything(at least in theory).

Okay but wasn’t fulgrim empowered by the demon sword during the fight with Ferrus? Pretty there was a part that said that he somehow was overpowering Ferrus.

I thought it was stated in the lore that Vulcan was the largest primarch? Did they retcon that?

Fulgrim was the perfect one. He's like Sephirot, just too good and strong for his own sanity.

I don't remember the details, but he somehow gained back control of his body that was claimed by a daemon. No small feat.

This is coming from a son of Guilliman, he did die. In order for Yvraine to revive him, he had to die, so they turned off the life support and let fulgrim’s attack finally finish its effect.

Maybe someone can clear this up for me. When Russ made shiskabob al la Horus Lupercal with the emperors spear. If not for some chaos magic he technically defeated Horus. So if Fulgrim deserves some respect then argument is over Leman Russ is the GOAT. That is if Horus was the best of them? There is always more questions than answers we all want to know and that's why it's so addicting. I hope I live long enough to see this great story unfold. Happy 4th God bless 🇺🇸 MERICA!

I can't agree that Fulgrim wasn't focused during his fight with Dorn. The narrator gives it away, describing his "murder strokes", "furious growls" and rage and effort. Dorn is a much, much better fighter than humanoid Fulgrim. Could he have beaten snake Fulgrim? Who knows, can't rely on daemon primarchs to tell the truth! Fulgrim healed up from those initial strikes but if you hurt a daemon enough they get banished. Like Mortarion in Warhawk! And Fulgrim did want Dorn dead - he told Dorn as much right as he left and sprung his trap. It would have been a very tough fight against daemon Fulgrim though. Maaaybe a pyrrhic victory if Sigismund helped.
