Here's some extra points of good fatherhood from goku: -after piccolo was shot down by Frieza, right after the giant spirit bomb failed, goku kept telling both Gohan and Krillin to grab Bulma and Piccolo and get out of there, worrying about his son's life more than his own, he even continues to do this right after krillin dies at the hands of Frieza and after he turned into a Super Saiyan, wanting gohan's safety to be assured. -During one of the points of the Bojack movie, Bojack bear hugs Gohan to the point that it starts to actually injure the boy, all while Goku was dead, and in the midst of this, Goku decides to get out of heaven, just to save Gohan and give his son a fighting chance! As he leaves heaven, he even says "My son needs my help!" and then he further goes to try and help Gohan by motivating him to push out all of his power. -during the climax of the broly second coming movie, Gohan and Goten are pushing back Broly's Omega Blaster back away from the earth, but struggle to do so, due to the sheer power that Broly had compared to them, as they were struggling, Gohan says that they needed more power and Goten wished that their dad was their with them, and what do you know? Goku shows up to help them and fires a Kamehameha of his own, and later tries to even motivate them and tell them to try harder than they were,even saying that all 3 of them could end the fight, but they had to work together. -there is also this scene during dbkai where Goku says to piccolo that, the last thoughts Gohan might have had before "Dying" were about Piccolo himself, straight up admitting that he always sorta knew about gohan's admiration of piccolo and of how much Gohan liked Piccolo too. -and another last example, right at the end of the buu saga, when everyone was coming back from the fight with Kid Buu, Goku told everyone that he was no longer dead, and that he was happy to be back, not only to his own friends, but even to his family, even as to say "I love you, Chichi" during that very scene. I am sorry, but if this video doesn't prove that goku is atleast a decent or at best a Good Father, than I don't know what is. (Granted, some of these scenes are not in the actual cannon, but they are still somethings to look at, as a terms of inspecting, how good Goku is at being a dad)

Here's something you didn't consider with the following points: Counter-point 1. When the plan to remove everyone from the dying planet was discussed, Goku told them that he wanted to stay to beat Frieza, but it's more out of selfishness than duty or revenge, because of his Super Saiyan state. And even after he won, and was "stranded" on Namek to "die", when they asked Porunga to bring him home, to his friends and family, he REFUSED, leaving Gohan and the Z-Fighters to deal with Garlic Jr alone, and they won by PURE LUCK.

Counter-point 2. This is after the fiasco that was the Cell Games, where he forced his own son to clean up the mess HE MADE, and Goku even made it worse, before leaving his child in the deep end. Gohan was FORCED INTO A FIGHT HE DID NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN, AND WAS BRUTALIZED, TORTURED AND EMOTIONALLY SCARRED. Goku allowed his own son to endure so much physical and psychological harm to give him access to a power he could have obtained himself, in the Time chamber. Everyone told him not to do this, even Vegeta was against it, and he allowed his child to start making mistakes that could have been avoided. In addition to this, after he "died", he told everyone that he didn't want to come back, for very asinine reasons, reasons that are so invalid. Even when he addressed Gohan, Gohan himself replies,"BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I DON'T NEED YOU!" Just because Gohan temporarily surpassed his father doesn't imply that he doesn't need his father in his life. You underestimate how important a father figure can be.

Counter-point 3. Their struggling was due to the fact that 1. Gohan slacked off heavily, and became a lot weaker than he was 7 years prior, and the fact that he wasn't using the power of Super Saiyan 2 during the entire fight. Gohan has past experience with Broly, so he should have realized and remembered how deadly he was, especially since Broly got more powerful. 2. Goten may have access to Super Saiyan, but his time on screen has shown how worthless it is to have at his age, and the fact that he is a child! 7 years old. He has so little experience in fighting in comparison to his family and friends, and only transformed due to being hit by his mother. And besides, Goku's appearance was only due to plot convenience, since, you know, they had the Dragon Balls in their possession, and they were within earshot.

Just like the fandom does the whole "goku is the true villain of the series" stuff. when super did the tournament of power the fandom flipped a lid, blaming goku just as the characters did, even when in canon its stated they were all gonna be erased anyway, had it not been for goku they'd have been poofed without a word. Goku also didn't make the rules for the tournament, he just wanted to have a fun fight, it was other forces beyond that twisted his innocent wish into something dangerous. He even offered to talk to zeno about it but was told not to. Super pretty much did a yugioh, couldn't just have a nice tournament had to put some stakes on it, even though it was unnecessary. By doing so it made it obvious how it was gonna end, by putting stakes they made the narrative limited instead of expanding possibilities TFS even retcon their own continuity to give gohan a rage outburst. Abridged goku didn't send gohan into space, he chose to go even snapped at chichi to go. Goku isn't a bad father in canon, he's may not be the best, he's sure as heck not the worst, there's way worse fathers in anime. The idea piccolo is a better father than goku is what I find absurd, cause he was the one that ACTUALLY forced him to train and fight. Piccolo is a better teacher than goku, not parent there is a difference

​@@obsidianfrost9514 indeed and parenting is already a tricky subject, most parents are always gonna do what they feel is right, and more than likely the kids aren't gonna appreciate it, or understand their own struggle as to not let their kid go through the same thing. be it the grass is always greener type of deal. in fiction steven's blow up on greg over his parenting never sat right with me for example. He let steven make his own choices, and those choices had consequences he was mostly happy and had a lot of fun, but got pissed over not having a more "normal" life. Which I'm sorry greg tried to take you away from the danger and you chose to run towards it. You made a choice every choice has a consequence be it Steven Gohan Boruto Ranma etc

Goku is an incredible dad considering he only had a small amount of time with Grandpa Gohan before having to be on his own. Not only are the majority of saiyans shown to be less than ideal parents but Goku is a saiyan with brain damage that was dropped on his head as he was developing. How many of us could do as good of a job as Goku did under these circumstances? Did he make mistakes? Sure, but who of us doesn't? He saved the world more times than I can count and had a big enough influence on his sons that they look up to him and strive to do the same. If that's not evidence of someone being a good father I don't know what is. Besides all that training time away from his family paid off because at the end of the day he was able to protect them when threats came up. This is something that Chi Chi never really completely seemed to grasp. If Goku, or someone he trains isn't strong enough to protect Earth, there is no life for Gohan or Goten at all. I don't blame Chi Chi for this either. I think they have both made mistakes but I have no doubt they both love their children and would do anything to protect them. It's silly of us to judge these characters when likely none of us will ever know what it's like to juggle parenting in a world of extremes like Dragon Ball.

To help you on this, Goku never actually says he wasn't around for Gohan birth people just assumed it. in the anime he just talked about how he was lucky that his wife didn't get mad at him 4 missing goten's birth and his excuse was he was dead, he doesn't mention Gohan. In the manga he doesn't say that he miss them, he just says he doesn't no when they were born, but he could just meet he can never remember their birthdays something that's been used in comedy for Fathers and Sons forever. But even if it was he wasn't around that doesn't make him a bad father. What would make him bad as if he knew how important it was but, didn't show up. but him not actually knowing why it's a big deal is not bad, so you can't fault him for that. leave out the fact that Vegeta mist Trunks birth and he knew how important it was just saying. also that senzu bean thing was part of Goku's plan to draw out Gohan's power. he wasn't just doing it to be fair because Goku felt that anger and desperation would bring out the power like it would him. plus it's pretty easy to mistake that your son likes to fight like you, since he's been fighting since he was 4 and every time you tell him to leave the battlefield he always wants to stay and fight with you, so it's a pretty easy mistake for Goku to make.

Goku is not really the brightest star out there. I dont think he knows how much value these stuff is. Don't forget he didn't have much of a father figure! All he knew is how to fight and become stronger and thats been his drive for years. He's learning along the way. I bet y'all if he was actually thought about how important these things are then he would be with his sons on every important occasions (except when hes saving the world) he grew up in the world of martial arts. He's being trained the moment he can walk, so you can't really blame him if he included that in his own son because thats how his grandpa raised him and he thinks he turned out quite well from it.

Paragus, upon hearing the news of his sons banishment went head first into a dangerous situation without even having a plan to save his son and sure Broly had an electric caller, but Paragus is only using said caller because if he didn’t Broly would have gone on a rampage, including back on frieza’s ship.

Just because you don't want to harm your family doesn't mean your actions won't. Goku failed Gohan alot buring his life and those 7 years without him doesn't help. My father and I may not have the same goals in life but without him guiding me through the tough times in my teens I wouldn't find a balance I so needed. Gohan neglected his training which put more people at risk. Gohan has every right to not train or fight anymore but he shouldn't let himself go because he disliked fighting. The tournament of power was a better step for Gohan to see fighting as more than just testing your limits but to overcome the path ahead to establish a better future. I dislike every saying goku is a good father when in reality he wasn't. His decisions weren't based on giving Gohan that level of balance he so needed. Only when he starts training with piccolo does he find that balance. All in all, I love the potential Gohan has as a hybrid tied between 2 cultures of his people the humans and the sayians, but he didn't have that cause his father wasn't assertive in his life.

So those four years spent with gohan and chi chi was probably the most we’ll ever see of “human fatherhood” with goku. After that starts the process of coming to terms with his heritage and protecting his family through the strength he gains. Also plot armor, goku can’t stop training because bigger enemies keep showing up. If goku doesn’t train nobody will be able to protect earth (in terms of goku being the main protagonist). I think he’s a great dad, and people need to cut some slack.

I think the biggest plot hole in the cell Saga, was the fact that when Goku was training Gohan and right before that, Gohan was more than ready to Fight cell (in his mind) considering what he sensed him doing to his friends. Even tells Goku to train him more in tensely and not go lightly on him. That there was no point in training, if he was not giving it his all to train him in the first place. Which agreed Then comes the actual fight, Gohan would rather sit there and all of a sudden be a pacifist. He tackled all kinds of other people before, granted he'd prefer not to. As he does indeed does not like fighting to the death. But he's smart enough to realize what would happen if he does not do so, even as a small child. Smaller than he was when facing against Cell. I think Goku was sure Gohan was ready, which apparently he was wrong, since Gohan was not ready at all to fight Cell, cell is the only dude whose Ass Gohan would like to not kick. Why do you think people loved Gohan so much? Because he was a boy had great potential that showed through previous fights, came in a clutch when needed, to save his friends, family. Cell is legit the only guy he did not wanna fight, which doesn't make sense, did more damage than any of the people Gohan had tackled before. I also think people get Gohan wrong, he's not a complete pacifist or anything, he's much similar to Goku than people realize. He likes to spar, so does Goku. He doesn't like to kill, neither does Goku. Goku wanted to give frieza a chance and people hated Goku for that. Gohan was trying to give Cell a chance, since he apparently does not wish to fight cell. All the training he did with Goku was pointless, despite telling Goku to train him harder. Which is probably where to tidbits of Gohan haters come from. Though I love Gohan as well. (tbf, I like all the characters. I need to learn to be picky.) But yeah, anyways. Gohan up til that point, was more than willing to give it to Cell, to make him pay. Also, this is random, I also think Trunks failed during that Saga, he also could have killed Cell. Whole Saga was just a bunch of people failing, besides Piccolo, other than fighting android 17, which was a fail because it lead Cell to them. Think the only guy who had an actual win during that whole saga, was Tien. He really didn't have any power to do anything, less he used his all to blast, like he did against Cell to prevent him from getting android 18. Knowing full well he wasn't doing any damage to Cell, but to hold him at bay. Faults Krillin: destroys the controller Vegeta: Dumb and prideful at the time, too arrogant. Trunks: Would rather let Cell gain his last form, than make his daddy mad, before going full strength against perfect Cell. Which by then, it was already too late for his full power Goku: Giving Cell the bean like a nut. Piccolo: Lead Cell right to the android Androids: Just watching everything unfold, let themselves get sucked up practically. (besides 16. But he could have teamed up with Piccolo or 17, instead of waiting for one of them to get taken out. Yamcha: Yamcha

Goku’s not a bad father, and he definitely loves his family. However that alone isn’t enough to make him a good father. Even dying for them, yes shows his great love for them, but it doesn’t show how effective a father he is. My biggest gripe is the seven years he was away after dying, as that was still his choice, and pushing Gohan into a fight with Cell, the later specifically. He seemed to not know his son well enough of how he’d face Cell. Even when Gohan did finally do it, it wasn’t Goku’s but 16 that convinced him. The entire time Piccolo also knew exactly what was going through Gohan’s mind, while that knowledge seemed to blow Goku’s mind. Plot point or not, giving Cell that sensu bean was reckless, especially considering your own son would be fighting him and the fate of the world in the balance. All the other characters agreed. It was an even poorer decision once we knew he was wrong about Gohan, not wrong about his strength but Gohan’s mindset. That is arguably Goku’s greatest offense in not knowing his son well enough. Finally we have too look at the other side of the meme, how good of a father would Piccolo be? During the cell saga we see a special connection between him and Gohan, both understand each other perfectly. Lastly how he gets along with Pan in Super is about all you need to prove he’d be a good father. So is he better then Goku? Debatable I’d say, to me he’s done everything Goku has done and more. Regardless I’d say Goku is an extremely great father, for a Saiyan. Beyond comparing him to his race, with other fathers I’d say average.

He's a good person. Thats it, has nothing to do with fatherhood. Its similar dynamic with boruto now, everyone takes the idea there favourite character not being perfect and its and issue.

I agree on some of your parts too. That it was reckless for him to give the senzu bean to cell but it was to motivate gohan more too. And the part where goku doesn't know gohan as much as piccolo does I agree as well but think about it. The time he spent with gohan was when gohan was fighting for the world to be saved and even during his time on the hyperbolic all they did was train, which didn't allow both of them to fully connect as much piccolo relationship did with gohan. And you add that only piccolo saw the weak side of gohan before his training arc and when he was ready to fight the saiyans, piccolo was the only one who saw how scared gohan was against nappa. Goku saw none of that, he only saw the confident gohan that was willing to risk his life to save the world. Piccolo and gohan are really similar in some aspects like how both were born with great potential and grew strong immensely. Though I like the piccolo and gohan dynamic because they were both forced to fight due to their great potential. Piccolo growing up was taught to only fight and dominate the world for the 3 years he was born. While the 4 years since gohan was born he was taught to study which fused with his personality and why he weakened during the 7 year gap. Though unlike gohan, piccolo only knew of fighting his entire life so he never had the chance to change his life around like gohan. Even if you say piccolo can't be a scholar even if he was taught that studying is important, I disagree. There are literally talking animals like puar and animals with human like traits like oolong and in early dragonball. And yes i don't think that dbz is this deep but it's fun to think about

Gohan wasn’t afraid of Cell, at least initially. However he was initially terrified of the battle with the Saiyans, he was just a kid after all. With Cell he just didn’t want to fight, nor kill. You aren’t exactly wrong though. If Gohan had the same love of fighting as Goku did, then he might have over come his fear against the Saiyans sooner and would have seen Cell as a challenge. But no, Gohan fights because he must, not because he wants to. I feel like Goku should have picked up on that in the 4 years before the fight with Cell. I am being harsh on Goku, as many great fathers do misunderstand their children at times... but I doubt any of those times resulted in someone being Cell’s punching bag physically and emotionally. As for Piccolo, he doesn’t need to be a scholar to stay relevant for Gohan. He’s uncle Piccolo to Pan. He’s part of the Son family in everything but name. He’s also still a wise ear for Gohan to call on when he needs it, though admittedly that’s more so the master student relationship. (Also there was that anime seen where Piccolo was spying on Gohan & Videl in town because he didn’t trust her... if that’s not overprotective dad mode I don’t know what is.) But in short, Goku’s a pretty good dad, he just needed to pay a bit more attention to Gohan. I must admit when Piccolo told Goku why Gohan was hesitating it broke Goku’s heart... Hmm maybe him leaving those seven years was a little out of guilt?

I’d honestly have to say that Goku’s not a bad father. He makes mistakes, yes, but who doesn’t as parents? He got better with Goten, didn’t he? Vegeta. during the time that Trunks was born during the android saga, Vegeta just straight up ditched Bulma and didn't come back til when the androids started attacking. Goku on the other hand spent as much time as he could with his family, and the time he was away was because he was dead or briefly training for a future threat. not to mention, Goku always treated his family with care and went as far as sacrificing himself to save them, while Vegeta did the exact opposite during the Buu saga, letting his own ego get in the way so much that he briefly ignored his family and even endangered them (also briefly refused to cooperate when fusion was suggested, and also, he obviously became a better person during the Buu saga and we already knew he cared about his family towards the end of the Cell saga, but i'm just talking about how he was just downright awful at first, when Goku was always caring).

Comparing Goku to an irl dad or really most anime father has never been fair to me because most fathers generally don't have to balance saving the world, training and raising their family at the same time. The world of Dragonball is a dangerous place filled with monsters, demons,aliens and Gods who could destroy all life on Earth with a flick of their fingers and if Goku didn't train as much as he does, their wouldn't have been an Earth for Goten and Gohan to grow up in. Goku may not always be around, but Gohan and Goten understand why their father does what he does. Goku may make mistakes, but he is never purposely malicious and besides what father wouldn't make a mistake every now and then especially considering what Goku has to juggle. Not too mention Goku literally sacrificed himself twice to save his family and the Earth. Thats not something a bad father would do. In regards to Cell senzu bean incident that so many people like to bring up, Goku had seen the power Gohan had and he believed that Gohan just needed a push to activate Super Saiyan 2 hence why he gave Cell the senzu bean. It might have been a bad call, but Goku made a gamble on his son and it still ended up working out in the end even if it wasn't the way Goku had intended it to be. Taking everything into consideration about Goku, he should have been a bad father, but he wasn't. Goku is an alien from a race where relationships dont work like they do on earth, had no formal education, brain damaged, largely raised himself, didn't even know what marriage was at yet he still has two children who absolutely adore him and a loyal wife who still loves him. All in all Goku is a 7/10 anime dad and I'd be pretty content with him if I were Gohan.

Goku is a good dad not a great one. A few things people always forget is how Goku was raised. The limited interactions he had for most of his development and his messed up common sense. Vegeta adapted better due to upbringing and being around Bulma so much. Goku has always loved his kids. Gohan's original animosity (if you could even call it that) to him was due to a clash of personalities something we see fixed in the current series. Goku didn't understand Gohan not liking to fight as soon as he fully understood he attempted to get Gohan out of the situation. (He didn't think he could win Gohan was their only hope and even then he still tried to get him out as soon as he fully comprehended what he did) Goku learned a lot through raising Gohan and we see him applying better to Gotten, who loves his father just as much as the current Gohan. I think people shit on Goku's family life a bit to much. And some of that actually is Toriyama fault, as he has said he is bad at romance but Goku and Chichi love each other very much.

I gotta say growing up in the 2000s by the late 2000s and early 2010s that meme always rubbed me the wrong way personally. Given all the forms of media I've seen of Goku from Z, Movies, Games (not all mostly the major ones) GT, Kai, Super, Original Funi dub, some subbed, manga, and the abridged series. This will be kinda long. To start off Goku isn't a bad dad, but at the same time he isn't the best dad. We've seen multiple times over that he loves and cares for his family. We saw this when Goku Black gloated that he killed his family he got angry and would've killed Goku Black if the plot didn't make Goku Black the way he was, or when he first met Goten for the first time and when he was forced to leave them again, or when Pan went missing when he cried out in anger. Then we see him in the time chamber with Gohan truly bonding and understanding his son and knowing that among everyone else Gohan would save the planet. No father would want to willingly put their child through something so rough. We see when Goku's fighting Cell with everything trying to make the burden easier for Gohan but tell me this why push so hard if he knew he couldn't win? Because he wanted his son to know Cell's moves so he would know what he would be up against. He gave Cell the senzu bean because he had 100% confidence in his son. Hell the man died for his family twice. Against Raditz to train so he could defend the planet and his family better and the second time to save his son. You could claim Goku staying away for 7 years is selfish but what sort of person wants to do that. He knew that if he didn't he would endanger the planet and his family again and he knew they didn't deserve that. He did it to PROTECT them from his careless mistakes because he knew that Piccolo Jr, Raditz, Mecha Frieza/ King Cold, the androids, and even Cell were all his fault. He also knew he could leave since he knew earth would have Gohan who at the time (Before Beerus and Majjin Buu) was the strongest in the universe. Goku by human standards isn't the best father, grandfather, or husband but to claim that he doesn't love them his Bull after all man died for them. He definitely needs improvement no one can deny that but among his people who according to Bardock in dragon ball legends says that "Saiyans are hands off kinda parents." Goku is far from a bad dad. Just because he’s not around 24/7 doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. Vegeta goes off training as much as him and Bulma gets by just fine. Plus their kids turned out ok so far, so it’s not like they’re messed up. I also think an important thing to keep in mind is the people they’ve surrounded their kids with. It takes a village to raise a child. Goku and Vegeta surrounded their families with so many friends to look up to and come to for support. Not just Piccolo, Krillan stayed by Gohan’s side through a lot and was practically a best friend to him. Given Krillan’s size, sometimes I would forget he’s an adult like Goku given how much he treats Gohan almost like an equal. More importantly, those friends in many ways carry a piece of Goku with them. When it comes to your parents friends you can always look to them as a piece of your parents and look to them when they are not around.

For a lot of people being a good dad is not just about loving your kids and family, it's about making them your priority. Goku's family does not seem to be his priority. 1. He could have come back to earth after namek right away but he preferred to stay away and learn a new technique. He could have thought there was no rush though, which is kind of valid. He still missed a year of his kid's life by choice. 2. Again, it's not that he doesn't love his family but very few moments, if any, indicate he cares more about them than his other friends Again, his family is not his #1 priority. 3. I don't know if it's different in the manga but in the anime Goku didn't remember his promise to take Gohan fishing, he just took him fishing because it's an activity they can do together, Gohan reminded him about the promise and said he was happy and Goku was like "huh, why ?" 4. Goku's #1 priority is always training. He puts that above anything else, even spending time with his family. He basically lives in Beerus' planet. He leaves to train uub. He doesn't seem to make time for his family and just spends time with them when he happens to be back on earth. Goku is a loving father, sure, but I wouldn't say he's a good dad because he doesn't put his family at the top of his priorities. Whether people consider him a bad dad or not depends on their standards. He doesn't have a good balance between training and being there for his family.

Yes and no. Yes because he didn’t really accept the fact that a Gohan doesn’t like to fight until later on. Plus he wasn’t there for Gotens birth because he wanted to train (also regardless if Goku was alive or not there will always be threats out there so that’s not an excuse). But he did go to save his son from Raditz and Cell by sacrificing himself. Which is the one thing ANY good loving parent should be willing to do.

He said that he wanted to stay dead because of those threats coming out of the ground because of him. Goku also passed the mantle to gohan and entrusted that he could take care of everyone in his place but gohan slacked off so he wasn't doing that at all. He had a plan for the future of his family and friends because he cared about them since everyone was going to get stronger he wasn't that worried. So it wasn't just to train. Also he's a saiyan so this isn't out of the blue.

And on that note what about the original Father of Goku Special Bardock didn’t really take an interest in Kakarot as seen when his teammate Fasha insisted he visit him but just shook her off. It wasn’t until after he got his powers from the Kanasan where je Even considered saving him. And when swallowed by Frieza’s Supernova he yelled out Kakarot and not mentioning Raditz. Sooooooo…….
