In order to modernize their society, Muslim governments sent missions of students to Western Europe during the 19th century. These students would return with their own observations regarding the West in the hopes that their success could be replicated back home. A generation of ambitious Muslim students and scholars alike pondered the question “Is Islam Compatible With The West”. While many contributed to this new rise of Western learning, the Egyptian Rifa’a al-Tahtawi’s works would be among the most important in Islamic history as it is from his writings that the modern Muslim identity changes forever.

no the Muslims are better here is the evidence. God is our Maker and he knows what is best for us. everything God Made Halal ( allowed ) is good for us in individual level and Collective level. for example, Islam believes in the institution of Marriage highly. without it the society will fall as we see. Why? because without Marriage there's no commitment nor rules and Women will end up having Kids without fathers for which will produce single parent households which produces mental illness which eventually gives birth to all types of decadence. In Islam we believe our actions have consequences in individual level and collective level. In secular society, Criminals who committed murder and vile crimes, are put in Jails belt by the people's taxes and fed by the people's taxes. In Islam, People who committed Murder and vile crimes like spreading decadence which leads to the demise of the society, are put to death. In secular society, Alchohol is allowed which harms the person in individual level and collective level. in individual level it destroys his life achieving nothing and causes kidney failure, in collective level it destroys the family which leads eventually to the destruction of society as mentioned before and the birth of all decadence. In Islam, Alchohol is forbidden and the one who sells or drinks get lashed publicly. Now if you do it in your home and no one sees that's your sin ,but to do publicly or advocate for it, you go against God's rule that protect society. Sin is contagious and that is why it must not be public. God said in the Quran " You may dislike something although it is good for you, or like something although it is bad for you: God knows and you do not.’" I can see why now Shariah is the way to live and build a strong society and the only way to eradicate all decadence and isms in society. Note: no Muslim countries now don't implement the sharia now because if they did, they will be sanctioned or " freedom" will be lunched on them. But We implement shariah on ourselves and our families and society willingly and if it must, we force it on our society even if our country refuse. now about Democracy it gives the rights to everyone specially the degenerated and rights for lobbyists who play on the country's affairs in and out and rights for people with bad intentions to reach powerful positions and divide the country in left and right and make the country stand for nothing and destroys the identity of the people ( civilization ) sound fimilar? 🏳️‍🌈🇪🇺🇺🇸 Historically speaking all countries and civilizations stood for something and if you tolerate everything than you stand for nothing. in order for a civilization to stand against hardship and all waves they need to stand for something and democracy and secularism doesn't offer this in fact both are hypocritical systems and subjective. Democracy is Hypocrisy as i explained why above. in nowhere that secularism is " good ".

for me, the atheism of the West is just that: it doesnt matter what sort of theism you have or dont have. the problem, however, is when you have "closedness" making it easier to reinforce being closed, but your "openness" doesnt reinforce being open, but is hijacked by people wanting to use your "openness" to push closedness.

Qatar banning alcohol in worldcup, and ofc everybody loses their minds even tho drinking Alcohol is bad and can cause cancer, even if the adults don't get cancer, their children could get afflicted by having the parents who love drinking So ofc incompatible, the westerners are clowns and the west is the whole circus

And there have been plenty of places where Islam has overlapped with other cultures that on theory it should be in eternal Jihad against. Christians in Iberia, the Balkans and Sicily. Polytheists in Central Asia, West and East Africa, and India. It took until the early 1900s for the Copt Christians in Egypt to reach low numbers, and thats right next door to Islams heartland in Arabia. Same goes for Christians and Jews in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan and Palestine. And non mainstream Islam that has a lot of political differences like the huge numbers of Sufi, Ibadi, Druze and Yazidi need to be mentioned as well.

On the contary, I think the conquest of Sudan is one of the reasons that led to Egypt's downfall in the first place because they gained nothing from it along with that of the luxurious spending of the rulers such as Ismail the "Magnificent". Instead, the Khedive's government should invested more in learning secular sciences, democracy and reforming the military to maintain the status as the de facto independent nation within the Ottoman Empire.

Islam has a total organization of life that is completely different from ours; it embraces simply everything,...There is a very marked subordination of woman to man; there is a very tightly knit criminal law, indeed, a law regulating all areas of life, that is opposed to our modern ideas about society. One has to have a clear understanding that it is not simply a denomination that can be included in the free realm of a pluralistic society.

It does not want to answer the question, but to further understandig of which vision Rifa'a at-Tahtawi held, how he came to that vision and the impact of his vision on later Muslim intellectual thought. It is not meant to change your opinion, it is meant to further your understanding of the past.

Very interesting video, thank you. Looking at that question and what is happening in Europe, North America, and it seems everywhere Islam goes I would say the Islam is not compatible with the West. People outside of Islamic countries are learning more about about Islam and things taught and apparently found acceptable in Islam and do not want Islam in their countries. So, I will say no as answer to that question.

We can see that the idea of universal equality, freedom and secularism inspired by French revolution triumphant in the west while Attaturk's experiment in Turkey as we see today failed. Islam and 'Westernism' is not compatible but both can exist in seperate realm and each people can lives peacefully with one another as long as they have respect wherever they lived.

So interesting that Al-Tahtawi saw the political and technological advances of France as mainly the product of brutal colonialism and prioritised implementing that over other ideas. Shows how colonialism and resource extraction really was integral to Europe’s “success”, unlike what many people deny these days

Speaking of France. Before France was so technologically advanced, Islam tried to violently invade France, but France was stronger. The Expansion of Islam was also done via colonialism and resource extraction. We know this extraction as the Jizya tax, as well as the many slaves and looting that went on. Theft and violence was integral to Islam's "success", unlike what many people deny these days. The Quran even speaks of those who fight will get loot, but those that don't will get none. How Islam became "successful" : " "Fight against those who do not believe in Allah... nor acknowledge the religion of deception (Islam) among the people who were given the scriptures, until they pay the security tax willingly, and feel themselves subdued.""

Anyway, my point was not to imply any cultural superiority but instead highlight the fact that the success of Europe in the modern age is often used to discredit Islam and other peoples, yet it has just as a dark history as those they claim to have avoided

​@@yellowSmileyFacee Islam originated in a land where denouncing idol worship would result in being persecuted, harassed and physically attacked. For example, one of the companions of the Prophet was a former slave who was beaten ruthlessly all day in the desert heat merely for proclaiming belief in One God, before being freed by the Muslims. The Prophet himself had raw intestines poured on him while silently praying, had garbage dumped on his house and was attempted to be poisoned ( the woman who did so he forgave). This is why Islam has such seemingly harsh responses. Anyway, anything an Arab has ever done is not necessarily Islamic, just like the actions of a European are not necessarily Christian. An authentic Hadith (saying) of the Prophet: “If anyone wrongs a Mu'ahid, detracts from his rights, burdens him with more work than he is able to do, or takes something from him without his consent, I will plead for him (the Mu'ahid) on the Day of Resurrection.” A Mu’ahid is a person who has a peace treaty with the Muslims, or who lives under their rule and pays the Jizya, which funnily enough allows them not to participate in war and gives them the right to be defended.

Well I think Muslim societies should emulate "Western" ideas where it is useful to do so like Corporatist class cooperation, free trade, (interest-free) open market economics and Georgism but mostly stick to its own socio-cultural roots so that they can act as a springboard for building an organic (non-foreign) "Islamic Modernity" imo.

But if so that doesnt track with the Islamic world, most of those nations are pretty new Saudi Arabia is barely 1 century old, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, the West African countries and the Near East are all by products of colonised imperial borders. Likewise Eastern Europe and the Balkans are both very Orthodox Christian and have been for centuries, but their nations are only recently formed with huge disputes over who should be where. Do you mean like in a cultural and ethnic sense, like a set of cultural practices tend to be preserved via a strong religion?

I am Muslim Chechen, but grew up in secular Sweden (which has Christian background), and I think it will depend on which circumstances. For instance, Georgia, the country in the Caucasus, has been Christian for centuries, so deeply ingrained to the culture of Georgia. However, for all of their Christian faith, the Georgians welcomed us during the Russian invasion at the 19th century before they did again in 1990s when Russia tried to stop our independence. Today, Georgians and Chechens live in harmony and there is no tension between the two and it is very common to see Georgians and Chechens marry each other. We have vowed to fight for Georgia until the last drop of blood since Georgia provides a second home for us. But in some others, political uses of religions can be tricky. Simply put, Iran. This regime persecuted everyone, but in particular very violent on non-Shia Muslim groups. However, they left the Armenians alone. Meanwhile, Turkey conducted genocide on Greeks, Assyrians and Armenians, but they left the Georgians alone. Meanwhile, the French and British exploited the Muslims to do their bid of conquest, such as in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, Muslims were recruited to fight in Indochina against the Buddhist Vietnamese; or how the Rohingyas were used by the British to fight the Japanese and Burmese Buddhists, creating racial discord. Then, look at Russia: the Russians employed Muslims to its army to fight Muslims of the Caucasus, only for the Muscovites then imposed their colonial control favouring the Orthodox Church. It's not likely about "the West" vs "Islam". It's rather how religions are used as ploys for conquest and frictions. Overcoming it will require massive efforts of understanding, which, sadly, has never been a thing.

while the last part of the vid clarifies the issue, at 7:15 'undermine the divinity of islamic science' is not a perspective existant in islam rather highly discouraged- ratherfrom time to time as generations pass ppl become stagnant in their urge for research and critical thinking along with rulers becoming corrupt. one of the key inspirers of a culture of scientific studying in prior generation of the muslim rule lands wat the urge to discover what the creator has layed out for the ppl, likewise development in technonogy was inspired by idea of sadaqa and spreading the msg of islam. studying of other cultures was inspired by- 1- empathizing with their background to rule them smoothly and 2- creating grounds to carry out dawah and 3- learning from what they know. this was part and parcel of 'islamic way of thinking'

Good video as always from this channel. I think success in a society, comes from good leadership, infrastructure, and bureaucracy. Some societies have them some don't. Most people in stable societies can't accept that maybe that just were born lucky so they always claim it was some part of their culture like Religion that makes their society superior, instead of smart economic decisions made by previous generations. At one point Islamic civilizations were the most advanced, for a while it's been the Western ones, in a hundred years, maybe Nigerians will be running the world.

It was the Revival of the pagan grecorroman thinking that happened during the Renaissance, and the fact european societies grew tired of religion after the religious wars, specially the 30 years war. That's what inspired the enlightened philosophers to push secularism in Europe, alongside the scientific revolution that took down the power of the most radical Christian sectors. This and Napoleon's victories that spread the french revolutionary ideas with his own civil code separating religious institutions out of polítics.

That Roman Catholic empire mindset was ripped straight from the Roman Empire . It was its natural transition. The very idea of seeking truth and knowledge and expanding on that was was a judeoChristian ideal , during the renaissance . The rediscovery of ancient texts played a huge part but so was the fact that the west and east and become so interconnected specifically after the conquests of mansa musa the prior century. The Silk Road also allowed for more free change of ideas . You also conveniently left out the blac death which led to a lot of the ideas of scientific thinking (As there was a need for this ) and germ theory.

Islam is as compatible with "the West" as any other faith that originated in "the East". Some parts of the West have been very hostile to 2 of such faiths, but there's nothing in "western" philosophy that requires that attitude or at least having it be selective. Communism - as an example - is hostile (maybe "dismissive" is a better term) to religion in general.

Great video. Sadly, i'm not so sure it is. Japan almost immediately after contact with the west entered into a golden age of industrial development using western ideals and have not faltered in their ascension until very recently. The Islamic world may never be able to foster the right political systems that reward individual achievement while encouraging national unity and the growth of multi-tier economies.

Latin America could be very powerful if they got their shit together. If all Spanish- speaking countries on the continent merged and joined forces, under the right economic conditions and cultural circumstances, you could rival the West in many fields and maybe even dominate the world. But it would be hard to undo the American- world order. English is a global language, and the internet spreads the planet, also an American website. But there is still hope. Latino America could be a power in its own right.

Prophet Muhammad(SAW) already said that Muslims will follow Jews and Christians exactly as they do. It was a question for me about when this started for a long time. Allaah never sent humans to modernise in the world. In fact Allaah keeps on warning that don't divulge in worldly affairs that will divert from Allah's remembrance and straight path. The only reason behind our presence in this world is to live as per Allah's guidance. Not according to infidel humans who are after the world. Prophet Muhammad(SAW) said that the intelligent person is the one who identified God. If a person excelled in worldly knowledge, failing to identify God is a fool and a lover. Al Tahtawi's ideology has dragged the Muslim world far away from the true purpose set by Allaah. In fact it has made Muslims slave of Jews and Christians. Allaah won't ask whether you modernise or not. Allaah will ask whether you fulfilled the purpose by following my messenger and his message. I have watched so many of your other videos as well. It should be noted that At-Tahtawi's ideas don't clash with Islam. All he did was identity certain trends in the West and saw those things being highlighted by Islam as well - e.g. Democracy complementing Islam's injunctions upon its leaders to rule justly by taking his people's views into account.

In secular society, Criminals who committed murder and vile crimes, are put in Jails belt by the people's taxes and fed by the people's taxes. In Islam, People who committed Murder and vile crimes like spreading decadence which leads to the demise of the society, are put to death. In secular society, Alchohol is allowed which harms the person in individual level and collective level. in individual level it destroys his life achieving nothing and causes kidney failure, in collective level it destroys the family which leads eventually to the destruction of society as mentioned before and the birth of all decadence. In Islam, Alchohol is forbidden and the one who sells or drinks get lashed publicly. Now if you do it in your home and no one sees that's your sin ,but to do publicly or advocate for it, you go against God's rule that protect society. Sin is contagious and that is why it must not be public. God said in the Quran " You may dislike something although it is good for you, or like something although it is bad for you: God knows and you do not.’" I can see why now Shariah is the way to live and build a strong society and the only way to eradicate all decadence and isms in society. Note: no Muslim countries now don't implement the sharia now because if they did, they will be sanctioned or " freedom" will be lunched on them. But We implement shariah on ourselves and our families and society willingly and if it must, we force it on our society even if our country refuse.
