In recent years these Coleman Mini Bikes have been popping up everywhere and priced to where nearly anyone can afford one, but the question is, are they really any good?
We decided to find out by taking ours out on some local trails and leaning on it as hard as we could.
But, as it turns out the "trails" we picked were not actually trails.
We went full send anyway, and here's what happened.

In this day and age of knowing how bad cigs are, I wish he would get past the addiction. We need Tony around and healthy as long as possible. His knowledge is immense, and I hate to think of his life cut short because of such a foul smelling and useless addiction.

Longevity is a very relative and personal thing. There is no doubt in my mind that Tony and his wife are happy at this point and are well aware of many risks of life. Not a very nice or caring way of landing your opinion as well. I would think you are, in your special way, trying to help.

Watching an Uncle Tony's video is like reading a vintage super stock or car Craft magazine from the late 70s or 80s. They would test and print just about any kind of vehicle. I remember reading about cool cars and Hot rods and then there'd be an advertisement or an article for a motorcycle or a boat or something like that. Those were good times

Wow what a rough trail ride. The cameras image stabilizer was working just as hard as the disks in your spine were. I think I may need some pain cream after watching that rough ride myself. Kudos to you for surviving that trail on that bike with no safety gear. You certainly earned your KZbin bucks today. Thanks for that brave attempt to demonstrate that fun little bike.

I have the Coleman BT200 bike it has the larger tube frame and same engine. I added the TC a header pipe and modified carb. Runs really well on the trails with the convertor as you can modulate the power easier at low speeds. Caught it on a one day sale for 450 bucks plus the truck freight.

A bladder buster. I remember riding rigid vehicles way back when. I'd find myself looking for a suitable tree or bushes about every 20 minutes. I remember some of the old B&S powered mini bikes that had the seat hinged at the front, with a pair of springs at the rear to provide some cushion.

More reasons we love UT. Riding an OS mini bike,no helmet and a lit heater. It brings back my humble beginnings and the reason I became a mechanic, was learning to keep my mini bike running. My kidneys are hurting all the way up here in Indiana after watching this. Be sure to look in your boot for a kidney when you get home.

Back in 1971, at age 12, I worked all summer in the fields, and bought a slightly used JC Penny mini bike. It looked a lot like that one, but was red, and had a Briggs & Stratton side valve engine. You just can't beat those old Briggs side valve engines. They have a windvane governor on them, controlled by the air from the fins on the flywheel. I quickly learned how to defeat that. It still only had a top speed of around 30 mph at full throttle, but it had gobs of torque at low rpms. It didn't really have any brakes. It had a flat steel plate mounted on a pivot bolt and connected to a pedal. Stepping on the pedal forced the plate against the rear tire tread. Dragging your feet on the ground would slow you down faster. I rode it all over the farm I lived on, and miles out into the AZ desert. I was stranded a couple of times by flat tires. No cell phones back then. Bikes like that are now completely worthless in AZ, except on private property. In order to ride a bike on public property, it has to have a VIN, a title, an OHV plate, and insurance. I now have a Yamaha XT225 dual sport bike that is street legal, and doesn't have to be hauled to a place to ride it off road. But at 64, I'm getting a bit too old to ride off road much longer. I'm not even sure I could fix a flat tire by myself out in the middle of nowhere anymore.

Dude mini-bikes are awesome. My kids and I went to a mini-bike show last month and picked up a project mini-bike for 200 bones. My Oldest (9) took the old engine out with a little help with the heavy lifting and put a new predator in the bike. The beautiful part of the project was the chain did not like up quite right and we had to order parts which taught him a valuable lesson in patience. Every time he thought he was going to be done and get to ride it he would hit another hurdle delaying his first ride on the machine. Keep up the good work Tony and always remember riding two wheels will keep you young.

I've had a BT200x for about 2 years now and it's been great. The BT ( big tube ) is heavier and probably a little less efficient, but they ride great because of the front suspension. Very reliable engines. I ordered 2 for about $600 each, and added the rear rack to them. The only modification I did was trim off the end of the govoner limiting screw to get the full 21mph out of them. Apparently they used to be adjustable, but these days they tack weld the screw. I was just working on mine today to fix the squeaking break. I'm thinking I may start adding a few upgrades here and there, but I'm only looking for a little more efficiency because it's all loose rocks ( dried up creek bed) where I ride and I generally stick to about 10mph. Just an FYI, everybody has told me that if you're going to bypass the govoner you have to be very careful or just replace the flywheel because they can basically explode if ran at full speed for extended periods. I don't know if it's true, but I'll follow random internet advice in Avoidance of danger long before doing something that could be dangerous.

Dude, I have the SAME exact bike, but with the "gas tank" storage and the headlight, like you mentioned. Grabbed it off of my Dad a couple of years ago. Got it for my kid who is about to start riding it. Once he's ready, I'll do the "free mod" to raise the limiter. IMO, these are cool for very BASIC dirt trails, riding around your backyard if you have some land, or make for cool "pit bikes" for the drag strip. For any kind of serious terrain, especially for an adult, a proper purpose-built dirt bike is needed. Awesome video!

So for Tony or whomever Fred Williams & Dave Chapelle from the sadly canceled Dirt Every Day show at Motortrend took a pair of these loaded w gear on an overlanding trip I believe in the Pacific NW (Season 6 ep3). They beat the hell out of them, but that was the first time I really saw these being used. It is great knowing there is such a cult following & after-market support as with yours there seems to be a good chance of finding a lightly used one second-hand. I was first interested in a dirt or mini bike for prepping purposes back in the late '90s & was looking at bikes like the venerable KLR, Rokon, Ural, or even just some old bikes from the 70s & 80's. With this seemingly being reliable, available components, upgradeable & new for $400-600 this seems like it could be a blast for me & my kids especially when we are out camping, or at our friend's property out in the country. I'm not done w the video, but would have been curious to know how the ride was with the tires aired down. Thanks for a great video Tony, & for rekindling my desire for a simple, lightweight dirt or mini bike.

Before I was into motorcycles I had a minibike with a 5hp Tecumseh engine, with tires like this but a little longer frame, made for 2 people and 2 sets of foot pegs. The Tecumseh could get hard to start. On the centrifugal clutch between the clutch and the outer clutch bell, I would jam in a small screwdriver. Now pushing the bike made the engine turn over. You had to be pushing on the opposite side of the clutch, because when the engine started, that small screwdriver shot out about 30 feet.

I love it! I need something like that for my fruit farm. I'm getting too old to carry buckets of fruit up the hill. I live on the side of a mountain in Hawaii. I have converted a gas golf cart ( Yamaha powered) to larger tires but there are still areas that it high centers. I think this is a very good solution, it may not have the capacity but it doesn't have the drawbacks. I've looked at ATV and such but those prices are like buying a car these days ( in my early days this is the cost of a house.)

Bought mine for $75. (Blown engine) bought a used Predator 212 $60. I modified it and use it at my offgrid hunting cabin. I -made a lower reduction with a PTO out the side. -made a drawbar on the rear to pull my cart or a sled. -mounted a milk crate to the rear rack. -mounted a scabbard for a high power hole puncher. -installed knobby 4wheeler tires. I hauled all my Firewood to heat the cabin last fall. Drug my deer on a sled out of a swamp. Used the heck out of it Ice Fishing. I charged my Deep cycle batteries for my cabin off the PTO with a pulley and a 1 wire GM alternator. Best part it fits right through the door of my cabin and it gets locked up out of the weather. Not a bad iron apocalypse Mule if you ask me. The only thing better would be a Rokon.

Cause the handle u hold on too is same as the throttle and if your going up a hill like I was and it stuck wide open at last min it gets kind of scary and that fence did not feel to do lol it messed up my knee pretty bad . Also I would add a return spring like I did it also helps

I love how the cvt makes the bike so easy to handle and it distributes the power much smoother. Uncle Tony, when I was a kid we had go carts, pretty much the same setup. If you ever have a clutch problem that looked like a Comet style clutch, we used to use a Mercury Hillclimber clutch. Way better unit the pads/shoes are a composite like brake pads, not that noisy bi-metal pad and they are rebuildable. Much better clutch with way less slippage.

The good part of these trails, you dont come face to face with anyone. 😂 2 years ago, I've put saddle bags on my baja with fuel canister and saw oil on one side and my saw on the other side. It's more fun to go do my firewood that way behind my parents Hahaha

I would watch you installing a suspension on that thing. If in you're going to drive it off road you might as well make it comfortable to do it. Two shocks for the back and a set of forks for the front and you're riding in comfort!

In the 60's when these things took off, they came out with spring forks and even a spring seat(Mustang mini bike) . They weren't any better. You immediately went faster (slightly), but then you were pancaking the thing that much more. Extended seat with more padding, relocated pegs rearward, less air in the tires.

That "creek bed" is because there is only about 6 -10 inches of soil in that area. Once people start trail riding it the erosion kicks in and erodes the soil down to the rock.

The BTX model is a little fancier with a headlight, I’m going to have to get one of these.

Considering one for my grandson (12) and the governor is a selling point. He can mod when he gets enough confidence.
