@@ardantop132na6 that not a very fair comparison consider T-72 and T-90( which is just a modernised T-72) are both pretty old tank platform from cold war , you gotta remembered that for it time of debut the T-72 is a really good tank whose Western counter part are Leopard 1 , M60 , Chieftain ,... All of which are completely out class by the T-72 infact for a good part of the cold war NATO was playing catch up until the Abrams/Challenger tank which are way after the T-72.

@@huyhoangtahuu9733 I just wanna say that old doesn't always mean obsolete (M2 Browning is still do a good job being HMG, century years old). I think in theory, T-72 and T-90 could fight Abrams (if not for Depleted Uranium armor) and Challenger. And the reason I put the T-72 / T-90 is a jab towards Russian tank that were destroyed a lot as if Colin were commanding them.

One tip you didn't mention: against Colin, do as much damage as possible when he is using his power. While his power is active, any damage he receives won't build up his power meter, and it's so valuable since the units he builds with his power will generate even more power meter and it snowballs like crazy it's so stupid :[ it's basically the only way to get rid of his units permanently, otherwise they just keep regenerating.

I usually go as colin for the power of money super and go for the firepower boost to flatten people but let's not forget the legendary match between colin and kembi colin's green troops v kembi's imperial guard. :P

@@Komatik_ It honestly applies to just general gameplay. If you can launch a punishing counterattack while your enemy is using their power, they won’t get anything out of it.

Also important to apply pressure at all times. Part of what makes Colin so strong is that his power has no cap. If you have a million funds you will get half a million from his power. If you don't force Colin to spend all his money then it will just build up and he'll eventually crush you.

Mangs demonstrated in this video that if you can beat Colin on unit count by a wide enough margin, you don't need to beat him on unit value too.

Colin's Battle Copters cost 7200, so less than your AA. Building copters to force your opponent to build AA is actually not a bad move for a Colin player, provided you can lure the enemy AA out into range of your indirects.

@@SoulHero7 That would be anti-synergistic with his power and super, because on a turn where he wants to use them to repair, any unit on building would spend lots of funds to be repaired, reducing the value of his hyper repair or hyper upgrade significantly.

For novices, it makes them quickly realize the advantages of repairing units to hold positions and the disadvantages of repairing units because of bad planning. Learning this lesson early on a CO that can both cover your mistakes and press the advantage with the same CO Power is worth it imo.

Hey manga I did the test to determine how lash and Sonja's super effect each other in dual strike. TLDR it based of who uses their super first. If lash goes first counter break reduces the doubled terrain stars. If Sonja goes first then prime tactics doubles the reduced terrain stars.

Oh that's nice intel. If that's the case then a Sonja player can use his Super Power if Lash's Power Meter is almost full. It might discourage Lash to pop hers during her turn. It's good since you basically manipulated her power meter to overflow during your attack and she can't even retaliate immediately during hers because of terrain penalty and also Sonja's scary counter-break.

Hachi is like the 2nd best co in the game behind aw2 sturm, the ppl would have to be really terrible at the game to lose. Colin here lost cause he didnt have enough bases to spawn lower tier units. Hachi doesnt have that problem with his super power, this would have been even more 1 sided if the other ppl picked hachi and spawned recons to fix his vision or infinity outta nowhere.

I love that the most expensive units tend to have garbage vision. It can be pretty tempting to buy the big guns, but they can't do shit if you don't have the cheap stuff to support them.

He may have been too aggressive. One of Colin's strengths is the unstoppable snowball he can get rolling, but it takes time and he was too reckless with his units starting with those 3 first tanks. Also, Lash flourishes in defensive situations where she can play around properties she controls and thrives on baiting the opponent near her good terrain. By playing more cautiously he could force Lash to take worse engagements on open ground while he himself snowballed his army way faster than Lash could.

Aye, the early game and even mid game can be dangerous for a Colin until you have a death ball... however late game, when Colin just has a line of Md. Tanks and B. Copters that doesn't seem to end that's when you know you've got it because you can start making bad trades because you will replace anything you lose.. the other can't (Colin is more like the Soviet Unions industry in WWII)

As a Lash main I cannot agree more about using air units as Lash. I went against a Grit and used BCopters to force him to build AA in the early game instead of Artillery. And that means he was building lots of ground units to counter my air units, and Lash excels at fighting ground units. If you're playing as Lash, use your air units as literal air support and force the opponent to play on your terrain.

Aaah, I love Mangs-math. "In addition to having 20% more troops, because they are 20% cheaper." Mangs. Just... no. It's actually 25% more troops. The math behind it is pretty simple (solve: 0.8*p=1), but to make it easier to visualize, you can think about it this way: with 4000 funds any CO will get 4 infantry, but Colin will get 5 (25% more). The confusion is here because calculating costs with percentages is not entirely intuitional (e.g. the current price is 50% higher than the old one, so it means the old price was 33% lower than the current one; a lot of people get caught out on things like this) Still, love all of your videos on AW (not much of an FE fan here) and I'm slowly going through the older ones, so I might throw some random comments in the older vids here and there.

I blame the Advance Wars Story Campaign/AI for devaluing Recon units. Enemy AI seems to ignore FOW unless you are in a forest, and even then they tend to know exactly where to scout out, so it often feels like "What is the point in spending 4k on a unit that is going to get picked apart by tanks that shouldn't have been able to see them anyway?".

You're right, the Advance Wars 1 and 2 AI cheats in FoW. Only forests and reefs are hidden form them, the rest of the battlefield is just visible.

Advance Wars is played like any other strategy game: when ahead, *get more ahead.* Colin *starts out ahead,* so if you just play him the same as any other CO but with better units sooner, it should theoretically be impossible to lose.

Jugger has the potential to get huge value out of System Crash, similar to Lady Luck, but he doesn't average THAT much damage, a lucky Jugger can probably take rounds off some COs

Even though juggler is bottom of the barrel he might just get lucky turns against you with his super even if he might do 0 damage. Luck based cos are kinda hard to grade cause they might just get super lucky and blow you off the map or miss you completely (do 0 damage) but it does avg to pretty terrible damage most of the time and they dont get extra movement on power use.

If there is a phrase that perfectly encapsulates Colin's style of optimal play, it would be this eternal maxim of warfare: _"Children_ study tactics. _Men_ study logistics." What makes Colin so strong is his ability to pad out some seriously strong logistics chains during the course of the battle all because he is able pump out an enormous amount of units. Compared to the other COs, it isn't even a question as to who can produce the most units when Colin captures locations at the same rate his opponent does, and guards those locations well. I ain't no "Colin Main," and I'm certainly no pro of AW either (I'm a noob, at best) but even a thick simpleton like myself could see that your opponent was utterly squandering Colin's propensity toward strong logistics chains by throwing away units and defaulting to a single unit produced when he had money to burn (I.E. the b. copter spam). Like, holy hell... I had believed it was _impossible_ to lose with Colin, but that belief was _thoroughly_ destroyed by this video.

When I was still younger and played this game a long time ago, and playing through the campaign, and when MAX started to be introduced I was like YEP HE'S THE ONE, I'm going to play him as much as I can (as possible, only if Indirects are not necessary element) throughout the campaign. You know the feeling of being young wanting to become a sort of Strong man like having forces and literally just crush through enemies with brute force. But then, AW2 and AW:DS came and slowly I noticed I was getting bad with Max(?) so I kinda lost interest and went for other CO's. Years after, specifically after watching Mangs' CO tier list, I realized Max got nerfed bad and bad for the succeeding Advance Wars game and that was actually sad that it might have been the reason I lost the love on Max years ago.

@@soulhoney1227 In just about any mission I can't build units on, and in AW2 the missions with factories are always super close. Replaying AW2 the other day I got trounced on Sea Fortress like 4 times before just looking up a guide (and still only completed it with one half HP bomber as my only damage unit), and one of the pipeline missions came down to a MAX OWNED ROCKET taking out the seam while the AI steamrolled the base of the faction who was being invaded. I can't remember if it was Yellow Comet or Green Earth that I was allied with, but I do remember being mildly miffed that I won with a rocket built by Max because I couldn't get anything else close enough to the seam. Edit: Since I'm still going through the campaign right now, I'll give the last mission as an example, Drake's Dilemma. I need to get these battleships down to the cannons to take them out, with the only real impediment being a couple of rockets down where the reefs aren't quite close enough to pass through. And then Hawke is sending Neotanks at my Kanbei on turn 4, I have utterly failed the capture game as two properties near the seaport to the north of Kanbei remained untaken the entire match (because literally Hawke had 4 neotanks in my area), and all I can do on land is spam tanks to pick at Hawke's forces. 22 days, 99pts in speed, 53 in power, something like that in technique for a B rank. This is normal mode, a 4 star difficulty map iirc, and I B ranked.

It's very tempting to build large units when you have the money. It's more effective to build smaller units at the start, and then larger ones later on in the game.

Game is over by 13 minutes into the video. The Colin fucked up his early capture game movement, so you can see the level of play. I really don't know what the skill level is on AWBW but most people seem to be really inexperienced.

I see this a lot on these replays and it definitely happened here, but it's not really the reason for the disparity here as the incomes and army values were roughly equal until around 30 minutes in when Colin just let all his tanks get first struck from properties. Colin even had an early income lead that let him afford an extra tank because he took the southernmost central city early instead of rushing the COM tower. (The army value lead after a few turns is actually representative of extra funds, not Colin's power as Mangs stated it was, since it reflects the actual paid cost of the army.) If Colin actually didn't get the COM tower it would have mattered a lot more.

The really telling statistic about the battle is Colin's unit-count. He may have a lot of money on the field, but his battlefield presence was slipping away. High-cost units concentrate firepower, but aren't proportionally more effective. Like you said, you can't attack what you can't see, and you have to use units for roles that are "beneath" them.

That and what he had in firepowerl he lost in the ability to actually employ it. Having powerful units doesn't do you any good if you have to waste turns interrupting captures or scouting.

AWBW's Colin is basically Dual Strike Colin, the most broken version of him.

@@lagg1e He didn't changed, but the game did. In Dual Strike they are more expensive units, like Megatanks and Stealths. Besides, powers now give a +10% attack and defense( it used to be only for deffense) during the turn activated, fixing Colin's firepower during COPowers.

AWBW's Colin is based on the AW 2 Colin, and the gameplay meter mechanics is based on AW 2 too. The slower overall meter gain in AWBW usually weakens him a bit compared to the other broken COs, and makes it harder to spam COP sometimes.

Collin's weaker units can't push through your direct combat units, so you should build indirects. Kanbei's units are too strong to go cost effective against him, so you should build indirects. Knowledge acquired: Always build indirects

Well wouldn't mind taking a shot lol. I mean I play Colin, though I have been playing the other COs, but as Colin, even on the Campaign, I preserve my units. The reason why is because of not only to be able to scout, but to also join for more money if I need to do a bit of a trade. I do see the plan behind of making powerful units, but you kind of need the support to help x.x It's why even on Days of Ruin, I have flares and rig units. Flare to help with the scouts (along with recons) while the rig, even if there aren't any airports, it's' like a safe bunker for the units to go to in FoW since that game, the units are treated as if they're in woods if they are in buildings

Colin is very simple, but his advantage gives him an edge in so many ways that it adds up fast: that twenty percent extra money to play with allows him either to make better trades with you in spite of his firepower debuff, or lets him field more advanced units than you can earlier. And he can press this advantage constantly. In the early game, he can field more infantry than you can. In the middle game, he can field recons earlier than you can, tanks earlier than you can, and artillery earlier than you can. And by the end game he has all of the advantage he was able to accumulate in the prior stages of the game plus he can afford MD tanks, bombers, and battleships earlier than you do. In *theory* you can overturn Colin's advantage if you get in their early and make some really good trades, but this never pans out because as we've seen, Colin's cheaper units doesn't just make his units more efficient and numerous -- it makes his entire strategy *faster* and he only amasses more of a lead with each turn before battle is even joined. And then he has really good CO powers on top of this so that even if you play your cards right and kill a bunch of units -- he can just pop his power, throw some money on the ground, and buy them back to life again -- with a 10% defense buff. *With interest.* If anything, the squishyness of Colin's units winds up making them *stronger* because they die faster and fill his CO meter. And if that wasn't enough, he has a super power that, while not as busted as his regular power, still allows him to negate his one weakness; a lack of firepower, by filling the barrels of his guns with high explosive wads of cash. It's like he was designed to be broken, but through landslide of oversights he turned out to be ten times more broken than he was even intended to be. It's like with Kanbei: 20% more expensive units for 30% extra firepower *sounds* like a fairly even trade giving Kanbei a modest advantage, but it really isn't because of how defense is calculated *last* and gets subtracted from whatever damage total your opponent has. Even without a firepower boost, the defense buff would probably be enough to make Kanbei a B rank CO.

Loved this video! I would love to see more videos with closely matches games explained in depth. I play a lot of competitive Pokémon games, and I think in that too there's a lot of interesting things to say when content creators can explain the thought processes behind both themselves and their opponents. Respecting an opponent is big for growing the community.

I used Colin a ton and a kid, and he's still my favorite CO, even compared to Hachi and Sturm breaking the game in half. I do actually not spam him anymore because I understand how broken he is, but if they nerfed him somehow, but kept his playstyle I would still use him. I also only pick Colin for kanbei war room maps, and kanbei for Colin maps, as I like that matchup from both sides.
