Who do you think these young kids are? Status Quo! This is a recording from 1970 by the group that would later become legendary as the 'Frantic Four.' They look so young and full of energy that it's hard to believe that two members of the Frantic Four, Alan Lancaster and Rick Parfitt, have passed away. Now, they are presenting you with about 12 minutes of a feast: watching John Coghlan's extraordinary drumming skills and passion. John is 77 years old today and retired. He just spends his time at home with his wife, Gill. However with new musicians filling in for the ones we've lost, Francis Rossi and Andy Bown are still carrying on the spirit of Status Quo and continue to put on very successful concerts. 'Is it really me' and 'Gotto go home' are actually based on the same musical structure. The same music is played slowly with different lyrics, and when it speeds up, the lyrics change to match the tempo. I think it's incredibly beautiful! I always get emotional and cry when watching, especially in the first part. I don't know why. Maybe it's because of the emotion when it's played slowly or perhaps because I can't quite come to terms with the loss of Parfitt and Lancaster, who knows?

It didn't take them long to transition out of the psychedelic era (with Pictures of Matchstick Men), and into the rock boogie era. Matchstick Men was in 1967. What was their first rock boogie song/album?

Found early gig dates for Quo and found one back in 1971 at a Rugby Club in Cornwall. They were there on 16 July, we got there the day after on holiday. Couldn't believe it when I saw their name written in chalk for the previous night! They would have been performing this....!!

Now imagine, from 'Ma Kelly's' up to 'Live' each of their record has been recorded the same way: Fucking LIVE! The 7" 'Wild side of life' was actually the first release which was recorded using different tracks. Every record before was the whole equipment into the studio, set all up, rehearse and record it LIVE. This has been repeated once later with 'Rock 'til you drop' where they stood on a stage and recorded the whole stuff with the Fleetwood mobile.

They recorded most of their songs LIVE in the studio. "Wild Side of Life" was their first "Disco" song. John's kick drum is only on the one beat, one, one, one, one... "RAOTWorld" is another "Disco" song, as is "Accident Prone" "Fine, Fine, Fine" is a quality Country Rock song. "Marguerita Time" is a disgusting Country song.

QUO fans know that ROY LYNES was their Keyboard player from 1964/65 to 1970. Read on..... Roy Alan Lynes (born 25 October 1943, Redhill, Surrey) is an English musician and occasional singer, who was the keyboardist for the rock band Status Quo (originally The Spectres then Traffic Jam). He joined the band in 1964/1965, two years after its foundation. He appeared on Quo's first three albums - Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo, Spare Parts and Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon - and wrote "To Be Free", the b-side of the second Quo single, "Black Veils of Melancholy". The track "Umleitung" was a co-composition with bassist Alan Lancaster, but was not released until the first album after Lynes' departure, 1971's Dog of Two Head. Lynes left the band in 1970, and was eventually replaced by Andy Bown in 1977. "We were frightened out of our lives to play without him," recalled Lancaster, "because the organ had always drowned out the bad bits." According to the group's producer John Schroeder, who wrote the booklet notes for the 3-CD compilation The Early Years, Lynes was 'the quietest member of the group' and 'somehow always seemed to be the odd one out'. He had fallen in love on tour, claiming he could see how serious the other band members (Lancaster, Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt and John Coghlan) were about fame and glory, and that he just wanted to settle down to a life with his newfound love. "I was shocked, but Roy was like that," recalled Rossi in 2001. "He'd met a bird in some petrol station a week earlier, and they're still married today." In the group's autobiography Just for the Record (1993), Parfitt said Lynes was 'a bit laid back, the Open University type who liked tinkering and finding out about things,' and Rossi remarked that he showed up at a gig in New Zealand about ten years later to say hello; 'He seemed a much happier bloke.' He is still active in Australia and has continued to perform in his own right. On Status Quo's 2000 tour of Australia, Lynes contributed to keyboards with them onstage in Brisbane. Lynes has also occasionally contributed keyboards and vocals to Australian tribute band Statoz Quo.
