Is 4k on this kind of Laptop really a good Idea ? I think for this kind of Work a bigger Screen with 4K seems preferable. The Water-Resistance is really nice and also that You can put in 2 Harddrives and 2 PCIe m.2 Solid state Drives. Maybe a Samsung 980 for System and Intel Optane for paging Memory. Yes, even with 32 GB You can run out of Memory.

Bought a P50 with a 500GB HDD on the cheap on Amazon, a 256GB 950 Pro, and a 1TB WD Blue. Put em SSDs in. It’s been almost 2 years since I did that, but outside a beat up exterior (it sees extensive daily use) it runs like a day 1 laptop. Amazing machine.
@MaseraSteve
@MaseraSteve 2 жыл бұрын
The secret sauce of it still running like day 1 is because of the OS running on that 256gb 950 pro. Even my ancient Amd e300 from 2009 still fast as modern celeron. right after i moved the HDD to second slot and the os now on SSD

Great review Louis! Awesome to see such comprehensive breakdowns. Would be cool to see a short update vid on the state of the machine after you have put it back together to see if you did any noticeable damage to the machine. I know you have stated your reservations in doing product reviews, but it would be cool to see you do such in depth examinations of workstation class laptops from other manufacturers if you had the opportunity to do so.

I’ve used a P50 for a few months last year and can attest to its great durability and build quality. I also love that Lenovo provides detailed manuals on how to completely disassemble their machines. I also love OSX and have been using PowerBooks and MacBooks since 2003...unfortunately Apple seems to consider themselves more of a lifestyle brand nowadays which also sells computers on the side...and those shifted priorities really shine through now. Great review!

I found your channel originally via the massive Thinkpad rant you did talking about the new keyboards that were introduced a few years ago. Good to see you are back in the Thinkpad camp. I'd love to see a video where you compare the current Thinkpad range to some of the old classics with a short stop to talk about what Lenovo messed up a few years ago and if they have fully solved all the issues they introduced with the modern designs and what could still be improved. Personally, I loved the old keyboards, Trackpoint and also how focused on being a machine for work Thinkpads have always been. I hated the Thinkpads from a few years ago (no Trackpoint buttons, media keys instead of function keys and the awful screens), but it the current lineup is quite good. I've got a Dell right now, but I miss Trackpoint with buttons and am lurking on auction sites looking for a good deal on a 2017 Yoga X1. Oh, and you've got some balls to pour water all over your laptop while it's running :)

Positively the best tech review I've seen on KZbin. It wasn't just a rehash of the machine's info sheet like pretty much all the other "reviews" around. I really hope you'll do some more reviews in the future. I'm admittedly a Thinkpad fan boy but with this review I can at least have the piece of mind that Lenovo isn't completely another Acer just yet: for when I can afford a P50 in a few years. Linux has always been a shitshow with trackpads but I hope you eventually give it a chance again on your laptop. The P50 is still newish relatively speaking, so I'm 99% sure that the drivers for the hardware will be completely stable and fully featured in the very near future, as has been the case with all the Thinkpads historically. Windows is complete trash and basically malware at this point, so once we can be roughly just as productive on Linux as on Windows with the hardware in question it's definitely worth at least dual booting (I still dual boot Windows 10 with Fedora because once in a blue moon I do need to do something that can only be done in Windows). Good luck!

I can only imagine. You mean the video card driver, for the Quadros? Also, opinion on drop-down hinges or whatever? Not worth it? You can't have cooling or ports at the back this way, but system appears somewhat smaller and I think it also ends up being somewhat smaller.

Fantastic review. The first thing I check when looking to buy a laptop is whether you can open it with one hand without the bottom flapping around, it just shows the amount of care they put in, and it usually means the rest of the machine is well-built and built for function, rather than form. Glad to see someone so experienced notice that sort of stuff as well :)

I'm watching this on a P50 while disassembling a P51 using the HMM from Lenovo. Disassembling and reassembling is done following the sequence as shown in the HMM. Disassembling took me about half an hour. Now reassembling it. I disassembled it to check the mainboard to see if I can detect something burnt out, can't detect anything using my magnifying glass. I'll get myself a stereo microscope the next time I disassemble it. I love the modular set-up of these machines, I disassembled and reassembled multiple thinkpads (X-models, T-models and R-models), replacing screens, keyboards and some modules like SIM, WiFi HDD's and SODIMMs. They all came with HMM's by IBM and Lenovo. I have to say that I love the NumPad on these machines, while doing calculations it's great, but I can type blind, using ten fingers and the NumPad is great for putting in numbers without looking at it. I can understand why you would like to have the option of ordering one without a NumPad though. Again, thanks for another interesting vid, I learn a lot from watching you repairing PCB's, even if they're all that fruit brand. Your technique is interesting. I'm thinking about repairing my own electronics when necessary and watching you gives me some very good points on how I should do it. Keep up the great work and I'm waiting for your next vid.

Hello! What exactly do you do with your P50? I mean, do you use it for running statistical computing softwares for data science? I'm planning on buying a ThinkPad & I'm choosing between P1, P52, & X1 Extreme. I wonder which machine will deliver my need as I'm gonna be exposed to using sofwares such as SAS & R more frequently with my research works. I need a machine that can handle large dataset & will be able to generate decent graphs in a shorter time period esp. dendrograms which, to my experience, takes hours to produce on R using my Compaq laptop. Thanks in advance!

I'm a thinkpad guy too, am impressed with the Trackpad too, which some thinkpads that came out right after IBM sold them were not good. I like how the whole trackpad on my thinkpad Yoga depresses when clicked. Two-finger gestures work almost as well as power books.

Nice to see a good review! Don't see many laptops being waterboarded :p Thanks for taking the chance with your personal rig to show us what would happen! The build quality of this machine is awesome! And time stamps in the description 👍🏻 29:14 that looked so cool >< 34:40 and as you pointed out in another video those brackets and cables are usually very expensive to get later on. 41:30 isn't Windex damaging for the screens coating or is that a non issue?

Recently discovered your channel; fantastic content and couldn't agree more. After burning through two MacBooks and one iPhone (and a depressing chunk of my current account) I got myself an old W541 on eBay for £650 (like $800 USD or so) and haven't looked back. I also stand by your other video titled "Lenovo vs. apple service featuring a liquid damaged ThinkPad"-- Apple's service was always hit and miss while Lenovo will cover me for 3 years under guarantee despite the fact I bought this second hand! Anyway, all the best Louis. Keep up the great content!

Hi Louis, where I work we have had Lenovo laptops as the corporate laptop of choice (replacing Toshiba) for the last 3 years. I have had a ThinkPad T40s, T50s and am now on a T60s - very durable and capable machines

Amazing review, this really shows how professional you are. Personally I am a desktop person as I tried several laptops and found none which gave me enough performance while staying cool enough. But I think the P50 is what I was looking for. Sadly I don't have the founds for it. As about a year ago I have built my self a desktop (i7 5960,x 32gb ram, gtx 1080).

The Tech Fanatic EN/HU The P50 is not what you were looking for. By the GTX 1080, I can assume you're a gamer. Know that the P50's graphics cards are both hundred of dollars more than the gaming cards and perform like shit in comparison. Even the maxed out P71 with a qudro p5000 give slightly less performance than a mobile 1070, but for a price of $4000+

Instead pf focusing only on performance numbers that can only be measured, but not perceived, you set yourself above the rest by focusing on things that a person who has to live with the laptop will have to deal with. Looking forward to more comprehensive reviews like that in the future.

The door hinges of your house, car whatever are of worse quality than those screen hinges in a thinkpad. Oh, I have a P50 for more than half a year. Confirmed, this is a great machine! As Louis suggested, don't buy upgrades on the Lenovo website.

Wow, just the charge port robustness at 2:18 is a deal closing feature! I want this laptop! Damn, I've had both hinges and charge ports fail on a laptop.. I didn't know Lenovo Thinkpads are this cleverly designed, I've heard people say in general they are very good work machines but this is another level of engineering.

I use the p51 for work and definitely agree with this review. It's been rock solid. If there's a small complaint I wish you could charge the laptop through a usb port. I got a ravpower with solar panel and work outside often so it is a bummer like you noted. And mini dp is still there.

Wow, I know what my next laptop will be; I'm done with Apple mainly due to the soldered in stuff. I can do without the numpad, I rarely use it even on a desktop. Awesome review. I've always liked IBMs back in the day when I was in school. I got a older Lenovo X60 from 2008 that I use still to draw on and still like using it; I put a SSD and Linux mint on there for gimp; also has a Virtual Box Windows XP for photoshop cs2. All round nice computer for its age.

I usually rely on Lisa from MobileTechReview for good videos. But this review absolutely smashed it out of the park. Fantastic. Wen I needed a workhorse laptop last year I sought out a near immaculate Thinkpad T530, upgraded the memory and added an SSD and it's a superb machine (the non-backlit keyboard looked new so may have been replaced just before I bought it). It's such a great machine. I do have a recommendation too. If you ever feel a need to use the laptop on a stand (I use a clone of the Roost stand) then I can thoroughly recommend the Thinkpad external bluetooth keyboard with trackpoint. It feels just like the non-backlit keyboard on the T530 and is small and light enough to carry around easily. It's the same layout as the laptop keyboard without the number pad. As an added bonus it works great with an Android tablet if needed (including the trackpoint).

I have this laptop, I got it a few days ago and it's way better than my overheating laptop I got almost 2 years ago. My Lenovo can run silent 99% of the time and when the fan does run, it's not extremely loud. My other laptop on the other hand is so loud when you just turn it on! It is very good and apparently it is 5 years old it says in PC Health Check, and if I hadn't looked, I would've almost thought it was like a new laptop! There is also a drain for the keyboard on the Lenovo laptop. You can see a hole at the bottom of the laptop with a keyboard and a droplet icon.

I watched this because I am considering a ThinkPad. Very in-depth. I appreciated how you mentioned the aspects Lenovo put into it for durability purposes such as the power connector not being soldered to the motherboard. I am curious whether or not the water on those speakers will go to other areas or cause a short, though. Do you suspect there could be long term damage?

I am confused at how the ones where they fuse the model names between business line(X1) and shit consumer line(yoga) will perform. If it performs like the high end thinkpads probably the same, if it performs like the consumer line it'll probably die in a minute and be done for.

the magnesium screen structure was better in the Thinkpad T500, but as I saw on your vid, they still using what they did on old Thinkpads (except maybe the palmrest which is soldered with the entire bezel) and as you can see, the entire fan is made of copper, which is a good point for the heat dissipation, like the T500 got (I only have the t500 to compare because I don't have enough money to buy other thinkpad but i'd like to do that) But, BTW , excellent video, as always

Hello, really enjoy your detailed reviews. I was wondering what your thoughts are on purchasing a P50 in late 2019/early 2020. You can get them with 4K M2000 reconditioned/refurbished/slightly used for $650-$800.000. This seems like a great deal given the current pricing of laptops. Any thoughts? My only hesitation is the i7 processor is only 4 cores. I'd be using it mainly for productivity and some light development (also launching a VM or two). TIA for any advice.
