Jamie, when my husky started to get older and struggled to get into our small suv, I knew I needed to do something. She had had a benign tumor on her abdomen and she needed surgery. I knew I'd not be able to lift her up in the suv afterwards and no way was I going to have her try to jump. That day while she was in surgery I trade the suv for a small, lower, 4 for sedan. I got a hammock to put over the back seat to keep her secure and I had already been using a sling around her to assist her in jumping and walking. Best decision I ever made, was not upset once about losing the suv. She was now happy and safe in the back seat, could stretch out, turn around and lay down comfortably and the hammock kept her secure. Best decision I ever made for her.

Our husky had the same problem. One morning he collapsed on his morning walk and he couldn’t stand without a harness. The vet said it could be six months before he got better. My husband brought a red light therapy pad from Amazon…the good one, not the cheap one. Within days we saw improvement and soon we could walk him with just the leash again! It was amazing. Maybe it would help Sherpa. 😊

I know what you mean. My dog passed almost 2 years ago (she passed in my arms, which was very hard for me but I am very glad she felt my love right until the end). People started judging me for how I was grieving her because, "she's just a dog," and/or "get a new dog," a couple people said just 2 days after she passed that I needed therapy because I was being irrational over grieving a dog (literally within 48 hours, like I should have been over it). I was floored at how insensitive people were. To me, she was more than "just a dog," she was my best friend, my baby girl (I loved her as much as my human babies), she loved me unconditionally which was something I hadn't had much of and she healed so much childhood trauma by loving me the way she did so she was my healer and my soul mate (not in a weird way, just in a way that her soul spoke to mine and she was my family). She also belonged to my dad before he passed in 2016 so it felt like I had a piece of him with me through her. The last two years of her life I had to pick her up onto and off of furniture, like my bed, my son's bed and the couch and into/out of the car despite me having arthritis and it hurting me I did it anyway because she deserved to be able to be comfortable. She was part husky and part whippet so she wasn't a small dog but I'd have done anything for her. I know Sheep's is bigger so I get why Jamie is trying to come up with a better solution than just lifting him up, hopefully he finds the best solution, he loves Sherpa in the same way I will always love my girl 💛 I still miss her every day and people still judge me every time I share an old photo of her or talk about missing her but I now just feel sorry for those people because they have never experienced the kind of love those of us who know that they are more than "just a dog," have experienced. We are the lucky ones because we have loved our pets as family, they have no clue what they are missing out on. I love that Jamie loves Sherpa so much and just wants him to enjoy life 💛

@becomingsophiesceliaclife My previous 2 dogs passed away in my arms as well. They weren't really sick, just old. So I didn't want to just have them put to sleep... Indeed, people are so cold and insensitive about it. Like treating an old or sick animal like a broken and old VCR or something. They grieve their dead loved ones, so why do they treat their loyal pets that way... I don't think God would want it that way either...

Thank you for asking our advice. But my opinion is I feel you need expert advice from an orthopedic vet for your baby. He already hesitates and doesn't want to walk up the very low level steps at your back door. Since I'm not a vet I can only give you my advice from having 2 adult disabled doggies. The first 1 I adopted was an already elderly disabled doggy. He couldn't really see and was afraid to jump up anywhere. One time he nearly killed himself jumping blindly off of a step landing. I lifted him to sleep with me on my bed. But he only weighed about 12 lbs. I feel very soon you will have to lift Sherpa's back side and legs into any vehicle. A mini car won't work no matter how much he loves it. I suggest a lift for your big heavy baby. Your back will finally give out lifting him every day everywhere. My second doggy I had as a puppy to 18 years of age. I finally had to lift him into my car, up steps, and into bed. But again, he only weighed 12 lbs. Buy a vehicle not for the next car or what Sherpa would like, but what will be long lasting and filling Sherpa's needs to his last walking and non walking days. It's just reality. But, what a beautiful wonderful happy companion you have. He adores you. It's just that physically his walking ability is declining fast. Prayers for you both.

When my elderly dog was having hip problems, I found a 2-door car like Little Red was much better than a 4-door car, so keep that in mind as you look at options. The issue with 4-door was that the floor was difficult to jump onto, since the floor is right next to the door hinge not leaving enough space. With a 2-door car and the front seat moved forward, the rear floor was immediately accessible to jump to.

Hi, Jamie. Could you try filling the footwell with a couple of folded beach towels or something? This means that Sherpa wouldn't have to step over the door sill into the 'dip' - it would be more or less level with the door sill. It would also mean that he wouldn't have to hop up so far to the back seat. If it works, maybe you could think of something better and more permanent than folded towels.

Jamie, we all know how much you love Sherpa. We can only love him from afar. It sounds like it's time to say good bye to little red. He needs space to lie down, possibly with a soft dog bed. The compromise may be between space, ease of entry, window to look out of and a convertible. I know you will make the right choice. I'm sure you are aware that there are also harnesses specifically designed to help you lift Sherpa's rear end in addition to the one he wears now (rear support harness). I know you will do what's best for him. ❤

I think making him comfy and happy makes his experience riding in the wind a better one is top priority for Lord Sherpa!👍🥰

That's the reason why we changed our small car to a 4 door ,much easier for our old dogs to get in and out.

I think that Sherpa's comfort would be absolutely important and you have to do what is best for him. So just follow your heart Jamie and if it means getting something that makes it easier for Sherpa then you got to do what you got do. Maybe there is a bigger version of little red out there.

Keep the mini for yourself and use the van for Sherpa, he seems so comfy there.

For a short-term solution, you could fill the spaces with pillows/cushions once Sherpa is in the car. I know that it only adds maybe 6-8 inches, but it should be enough for him to get more comfortable. He still has the windows and open roof that he loves. The pillows/cushions would be small enough not to take up a lot of space when not in use.

@@SherpasDay Jamie, you might also want to try to tuck away the seatbelt buckles as I'm they are digging into his side when he tries to lay down. I think removing the front seat and placing cushions or thick padding down will help immensely for him getting up onto the back seat. This would also give you room to have a small stool for him to use to get into lil-red and with front seat gone the stool could be placed in it's spot.

❤ Poor sweet Sherpa .. is there a way that you could put a foam pad that would fill in the floor/backseat ratio so that he would be comfortable in the entire space! It would save you expense wise on having to get another car .. just a thought. I mean the kind of foam that furniture is made out of!! Good luck for you both!

You always do the best for Sherpa, Jamie. Would love to see Sherpa get another convertible, he loves it so. You will make the best decision Jamie, you’re such a good Dad. ❤❤

He really loves the convertible doesn't he 😢

@@SherpasDay Sherpa does but if your unable to get another convertible I think Sherpa with be happy with more room and having the window rolled down and looking out. Most importantly, Jamie, Sherpa just enjoys being with you and he knows you will make it the most comfortable for him.

Jamie, i know you, being the incredible doggy Dad, that you are, you will make the best decision for Sherpa and his comfort and safety. Jamie you are just so sweet and accommodating wherever Sherpa is concerned. I wish you the absolute best with whatever you decide to do. I would go with the bigger Mini if i were in your situation. Sherpa, being the Lord that he is deserves the best. Take care. Much love. Have a great Sunday. ❤️ ❤🫂💋🐺🧔

You're not the only one. When we shopped for a new car it had to be not too high to the back tailgate and had to have enough head room for our dog to stand up .

Hi Jamie. We have the same issue . We live in america and we have a mini and a husky. We push the passenger seat all the way forward and use blankets and foam on the back seat so she can lay flat. She loves it and sometimes its still hard for her but if you put sherpa in on the passenger side it might be easier for him. We love you guys and hope sherpa gets to keep riding in his mini!

Jamie, I understand your car dilemma. I got a ramp to use for my aging collie to get into the back of my station wagon, and it worked well for us. I also found the "Help ''em Up" harness to be absolutely fantastic helping with his hind leg weakness. It has a lifter portion for the hind side in addition to the front. It's almost like an exoskeleton, and they can wear it basically all day long. I encourage you to check into that. Good luck with the car decision... I don't think I've bought a car for myself in decades; all purchased for the dogs. 😊

Jaime, look up backseat dog hammock. Also might be a good time to pickup a tummy belt to lift him into the car. You just whisk it under him as close to his back legs as you can and give him a lift. EDIT: I think we've got to think about his age. How active will you be when you're 90+? It may be time to slow down and let him just nap at home. Love from Oregon.

I don't drive so I'm not sure. Take him with you and measure him against any car you think of. Lol. I'm sure the salespeople will love having such a star in their showroom. 😂❤❤

Great idea. That way, you also know how comfortable it will be for him to get in and out since he probably also has depth perception issues.

Whilst you still have little red you could stuff pillows or blankets behind the front seats up to the level of the back seats. This means if his paws/legs naturally want to "fall off" the seat, it can rest on the pillows, creating extra room. Not sure if that will work but just wanted to throw out that option. Bless you for thinking of his health and happiness, I totally understand that our furry companions mean the world.

They make foam inserts to put behind the front seats in front of the back seat to extend the seat. They are a sturdy foam so they don’t collapse easily. I have them and they work great. They come out easily and are easy to put back in.

Sherpa's comfort has to be most important. My dogs have always came first too, and if it were me, I'd be looking for something a little bigger for him. How he was now laying on the back seats probably isn't doing that much for he's legs now. A shame as little red is lovely, maybe you can find something similar, but bigger. And yes changed cars so that my dogs have more room too in the past. 😊
@danielleshay197211 ай бұрын
i know absolutely nothing about cars. I do know that you will do anything to make Sherpa comfortable. So this is in your hands and I know that you will do whatever you need to do to make him comfy and happy, Sounds funny doesn't it? Lol. Much love to you both. Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

Look up Mini Countryman Premiere. It has the space, two roof openings and a separate boot. You drive a stick so transmission problems should not be issue.
