I recently dropped Linux Mint onto an old device, and it's so much faster. I'm contemplating doing the same with my main laptop.. but still weighing it up.

This video is obviously not for seasoned Linux users. It's meant to be a gateway to Linux for people who are curious, or those who didn't know there was another option. I've made a few.. decisions in this video, mostly to not confuse people. It's short and to the point: "there is something else". I also called windows 7 where we "started". I'm trying to attract a younger generation of windows users to Linux, those who may have started on Win 7.

Then Microsoft changed everything with Windows and then it just got worse and worse. So in the end when Microsoft stopped support for Windows 7 and 8 so I switched to Linux. @@QuinsTechCorner Well I've never enjoyed using Windows as you might remember from helping me throubleshoot all those years ago haha -- I merely put up with it because it was the only OS that I could game and use Adobe apps on (I know, I know... But I need them for work unfortunately)... I had been keeping an eye on Proton for Linux even before the release of the Steam Deck helped bring it to where it is today, as well as making a semi-promise to myself that Windows 10 would be my last version (for which I think support ends at some point next year) in light of Windows' increasing telemetry etc. -- Microsoft's recent decisions have only compounded this. I know there are some people in the Discord server that might appreciate a photo or two, so I'll try to do that once I get everything setup properly 🙂

I ran Linux Mint for a year or two. I enjoyed the Cinnamon desktop environment, but having to add repositories for snaps and flatpaks was a pain. Nowadays I run Arch-based Garuda and the AUR, Arch User Repository, has most of what I want and need, and most of it is up to date. Using the command *yay* updates everything that calls for it. And Garuda has Cinnamon as an option for your desktop environment, not to mention it's very convenient for gamers out of the box.

Windows 7 is still the best, I have been using it long after newer versions were released like 8 and 10. While I do use macOS more now, for older systems I do use 7 on them. Of course I also have XP, Vista, ME, etc, but I'm talking about a more modern release of Windows. If Microsoft rereleases 7, it would be much better but it doesn't seem like that'll happen anytime soon. Instead, I actually just "upgraded" to a PowerMac G5! Super excited to take advantage of that PowerPC technology. I would rather use 20 year old Mac OS/Windows instead of Windows 11.

Man. Blue Screen of Death Fears! in 2024? Man I go years without seeing a blue screen of death. it's not Windows ME or even Windows XP anymore. Listen, Linux folks. You are not going to get people to switch base on fears from 2000, oh windows, BSOD, tons of viruses... That for the most part isn't much of an issue anymore unless you are very reckless with how you browse the internet. The vast vast vast percentage of people couldn't care less about operating system. What they care about is doing WORK (or play) with their system. Do you have the industry standard software for school, university, work, etc. Is it widely connected, so If I'm using microsoft office at home, I can upload the file to one drive and then use it at work or school. Is the ecosystem great, ie.. my ipad, iphone, imac or macbook pro. Can I play my games without any issue. These are what people care about. The OS itself is irrelevant for the most part other than sometimes people care that MACOS tends to look the best out the box; does it play nice with fractional scaling, or does VRR work without issues. My other issue with many linux videos is They live in a world where they think There is only Windows. News flash, a lot of people over the past 20 years have switched to MACOS, in the US, it went form a marketshare of 5% to a market share of about 30%. Ignoring that fact and simply focusing your vitriol at just Windows is extremely foolish.

@NotSoFriendlyGuy I don't think you understand my post. You indicating free, open source, can be install on any machine is a nice advertising slogan, but is it EFFECTIVE? Do people care about that? The answer can easily be found. If people cared about it, then linux would easily be found in regular stores, if people care about it, then on your typical day to.. say a university, a coffee shop, or some other place, people would have linux laptops that they are using, and the marketshare would reflect this. It is obvious people are NOT caring about free, open source, and can be installed on any device. Over the past 20 years, microsoft's bleeding marketshare has been to MACOS base systems and thus people has no problem getting a "closed source, expensive, hard to upgrade device" than to all the stuff you mentioned. I don't have any skin in the game, I'm just stating the facts. If linux is to gain marketshare, it will have to sacrifice something in what they are doing as so far, it's not working for the Desktop OS space.
@Powerincarnate.5 ай бұрын
@NotSoFriendlyGuy I still think you are mistaking what I'm saying. 1. For individual persons, Linux can be effective. For individual persons MS DOS may be effective, JRR Martin uses a Dos-base system and Word star for typing his game of thrones books, it doesn't mean that the general populace is going to use when the industry default is Microsoft Office. 2. It doesn't mean Linux as an OS (GNU/Linux if you must) has all the tools to be a dominant OS. Linux is not bad. 3. Microsoft Windows is also not bad. People are WAY WAY WAY overblowing Windows as being bad. Those days are long long gone when you would get lots of BSOD, or lots of viruses. Windows is way safer, way more secure, and way more effective now, and it also looks good as an OS also. Don't buy into Linux geeks that constantly try to claim some issue with windows. For the most part All OS now adays work for basic use. 4. The main reason people left Windows to MAC 20 years ago was mostly for stability reasons. The main reason people left windows for MAC OS over the past 5-10 years have been for the ecosystem of Apple. Saying, the consumers simply just see Apple lying around so they choose it is extremely elitist mindset as if people are just flat out stupid when they are not. Products don't sell well because they are just lying around. Products sell well because they meet and exceed the needs ot the consumer. 5. Linux has many reasons it can't gain marketshare and part of the reason is because gaining marketshare would mean abandoning some key components on what makes Linux...Linux. For example, you can't just find yourself on a storefront. You need a marketing department, advertising. You need a budget. You need a corporation with a goal of maximizing the reach of said software and thus to make money. Linux people do not want nor trust any single or duo of coorporations to gain that much influence or power. Or else, they would have coalesced around Canonical, or Redhat long time ago and promote the hell out of it. Linux doesn't want to break up fragmentation.. ie. get rit of 100+ distros and focus on just 1 or 2. Linux doesn't want "proprietary" software, ie. the industry standard software. I could go on. In fact, when people mention some of these things.. people say.. when they don't want Windows, if they did, they would use windows. And if Linux every went that way.. they would simply leave Linux and go with Free BSD or something. 6. To prove my point on Number 5. Android IS linux. It may not be GNU/LInux, but it uses the linux kernel, and it has become extremely popular around the world and is the number 1 used phone OS there is. From it comes extensive compatibility with industry standard mobile software. And guess what. People have no problems using it. But try to be very closed and restrictive, and FOSS like Nokia N900 or their attempt at MEEGO, or Ubuntu Touch phones, or Pinephones, and you get No support by the masses. The fact is. The masses don't give a crap about FOSS. They don't even care about the nuts and bolts of the OS. They simply want to use their product to do some sort of work (or play) without any restrictions to the available software. Until Linux realize this, it will be stuck in the 2-4% marketshare in perpetuity.
