10mm doesn't sound like much but because it is no longer a smooth surface, it increases the drag immensely. Regarding the fuel lines, use a bit of masking tape to number them. Thanks for posting, really helpful

Great Video Thanks to you and your Dad! The egr system on diesel engines seems to be such a controversial matter. We have been quoted from - 1200 to 3000 dollars to have someone look at this issue on our Mercedes sprinter engine. Most shops simply want to disconnect the system and do a remap.

Good Job Will, On my engine I took the valve cover off and turned it over until both inlet valves were closed. Using a right angled scraper I made up and throttle body cleaner I cleaned out all the ports one by one until finally putting an air blower down the port to expel the loose carbon and TB cleaner. Make sure you stand well clear doing this and protect the paintwork ! Cheers Jamie

I have a 1987 mercedes 300d with only 162k miles. I removed my egr and blocked it off. Then pulled the intake and found it had 1/4 inch of greasy soot and the intake ports on the head were about half restricted. After scraping all the gunk And cleaning it out there is a noticeable difference in power and better mpg. Agr sucks. Good luck on your project. Stay safe.

Very well done young man and give me yet again why 100% NEVER do an on engine chemical clean as all that crud get dissolved and shoved through your engine. The way you did it is the prefect way to do the job "RIGHT" The most expensive way for the bloke has to pay someone but 110% correct. Who wont all that shit getting loosened up and shoved down into combustion damaging rings & bores. Sad but some people are sucked into the running chemical cleans with no idea what they are doing to there engines. Good work mate.

Well done great job with the egr and intake clean. I’m a diesel mechanic and have worked on many 1HDFTE engines. Depending on how many kms the vehicles got check the valve clearances and on many occasions this makes a big difference. Also replace all filters, air, fuel with genuine filters. Also I recommend only use BP ULTIMATE DIESEL. Also those injector lines need to be replaced every 120,000 kmls. Injectors can be sent to your local diesel fuel shop to be tested for spray pattern and spray duration pulse. Good luck I love these engines and service every 5000kml.

Hey mate, there was actually a noticeable difference! If you look into my later videos, you’ll find there were other problems with that engine holding back its performance, but cleaning the intake out did help a lot because all of a sudden there’s smooth airflow and it’s not disturbed by rough soot on the way in. Was there some soot when revving/driving before cleaning out the intake? My 1HDFTE with 460k seems to be blowing some soot and it's stock. I only just got it but have known the previous owner and am sure this has never been cleaned.
@WillsLandcruiser
@WillsLandcruiser 2 жыл бұрын
Is it black soot or more of a greyish colour? Black soot is unburnt fuel and you commonly see this when planting it before the turbo has time to spool up. You see it a lot in my videos too because my HZ doesn’t have a boost compensated pump so before the turbo is at peak boost, it’ll be running a bit rich. Of course the FTE has a map sensor along with other computerised bits so it should compensate fuel for the air it’s getting anyway. It could also be a blocked air filter? I’ve seen more of a grey soot in diesels that live their life in town and never get a proper run on the highway. If you’d just bought the vehicle I’d be doing a complete service- all filters and oils if it needs it, and then taking it for a nice 30 minute run on the highway for starters
@Beng177
@Beng177 2 жыл бұрын
@@WillsLandcruiser It is more of a greyish soot, It has been sitting for the better part of 3 years only started a once 8 months ago to shift it out of the way before me buying it a couple weeks ago. The rear diff centre cooked itself from lack of oil and is the reason it was parked up - and I can't give it a good run just yet until I get a new one/rebuilt. For now it's just moving with the front diff. And yes, first thing I did was all new filters and oil. But yeah even just putting around in first it seems to blow a bit of soot, particularly when giving it little revs and taking off. Clears up almost completely if you hold an rpm. If I remember I'll reply here with what the cause is and if a good run solves the issue after I get a new diff.

@@WillsLandcruiser rightio, found the intake gasket was half missing away up the front part of the manifold. The entire lot of manifold bolts were loose and after taking off the crossover bit off it was basically flopping around with roughly a 1mm gap. not ideal at all!! Cleaned all the intake out and surprisingly there was maybe half as much soot as what was shown in your video. No buildup at all in the valves/head. Don't think it needed to be cleaned if it weren't for having to replace the intake gasket. chucked it all back together tonight, started & runs good. I owe it to videos like yours, don't think I would have done it otherwise. Hahaha egr is to reduce NOx. Came out in the 90s for toyota. Its a service part. Needs to be cleaned. Blocking just means you will need to need clean it less. Doesnt give more power, you just dont loose power over time. Also brakeclean works better than degreaser but costs more. If you have time. Just sit it in a over cleaner bath overnight (lazy way to clean) Wait! Fair enough the engines choked as fuck but you shifted at just over 2Krpm and lugged around at 1Krpm(before turbo spool) in second gear then after the clean you shift at 3Krpm putting you at 2Krpm (withing turbo boost spec) in second. Aples to aples please. I get its hard to remember after a day or so but still. Other than that. Keep it up
@WillsLandcruiser
@WillsLandcruiser 4 жыл бұрын
Liam Cooper Yeah nah I’m pretty new to the EGR stuff haha as you can tell. I may have been using “power” incorrectly, what I meant is that the engine was very choked and as a result of that it’s sluggish because obviously the AFR is all wrong when it can’t get the air it needs. And yeah I realised it wasn’t the ultimate comparison, you’re right. But it does give a fair indication, and if you watch closely it shot up in the revs in 1st as well as 2nd gear after the clean. It may have not been exactly the same change into 2nd before/after but there is a huge difference in how fast it climbs in revs now that it can breathe
@liamcooper5202
@liamcooper5202 4 жыл бұрын
@@WillsLandcruiser absolutely. It doesnt take much to choke it. Interestingly, how did you clean the head fully? To block the egr, the just need a blanking plate. A retune of the electric governor maybe required. Im not too sure about the sensing side of the egr on a FTE motor. But on the early version it was as simple as just putting a blank plate in. If you wish to keep the egr then a good catch can is recommended. Will help slow and stop the build up as it wont have oil to mix with.
@WillsLandcruiser
@WillsLandcruiser 4 жыл бұрын
Liam Cooper Yes the poor thing was struggling a bit. We just did the best we could and scraped a heap out, got in there with degreaser, high pressure cleaner, air nozzle, all that. We only went as far as the intake manifold so a real decent clean would show even better results. I personality wouldn’t like to keep it on there but I do realise it’s “illegal” to block them. @@WillsLandcruiser its only illegal if you get busted with it. Basically if you're stock they wont look at you. If you get a shit tune that blows heaps of smoke and block your egr, you will get looked at. So many people get bad diesel tunes. I dont know how they dont understand that smoke is bad news for a diesel...

Liam Cooper Yeah aye black smoke means a rich ratio right? Not good at all for Diesel engines. Well thanks for your advice! I’ll take all that into consideration and I definitely reckon dad needs to spend some money on it 😂

Great result Will, been enjoying all your videos currently modifying 105 with Son, started as lamb on its way to beast ! P.S good idea to wash engine first, to stop any crud entering opened areas.

What an environmental disaster! You should have taken the parts to a proper diesel shop where they would have done an environmentally safe proper cleaning.
