It depends on where you rank Jayson Tatum. If you have him as a superstar, then the Finals exposed him as overrated. No, his age can't be used as an excuse. 24 years old isn't that young considering that he has multiple Eastern Conference Finals appearances. Besides, you can't make the All-NBA 1st Team, label him a superstar, but then give him a pass for his awful series. Kobe Bryant was crucified for 2004. LeBron James was crucified for 2011. The term superstar gets tossed around and given too casually these days. Tatum is a great player; however, the Finals showed us that he has another ceiling to break before reaching superstar status. He doesn't deserve all the slander because his Finals performance isn't the only reason they lost -- other Celtics players played poorly (i.e., turnovers) or below their capabilities. Tatum is a great player and will be a superstar in the league one day. He was also missing in action in the brightest/biggest stage (the Finals). Both statements can be true.

A lot of the complaints you had on tatum was really more of a testament to what the warriors did defensively. Tatum, while being an all nba level player, still has his own weaknesses. You harp on him not being able to pass on certain situations but those passes aren't really open for a lot of dudes in the nba. Not everyone has the passing acumen of a lebron or a luka. It's easy to nitpick when you're watching in slow motion and can replay plays over and over. The warriors knew that tatum is more of a scorer than a playmaker and they exploited that on defense.

I remember noticing that Tatum was hitting a lot of really bad shots during the Celtics run to the finals. I think I commented at the time that eventually he would start missing those bad shots and that happened in the finals. When every prayer shot you take is going in I think you start to think that it's going to happen continually and when it doesn't you don't have anything to fall back on. He started missing those bad shots in the paint and at the mid-range level and it was a big part of the Celtics losing the series

I think after a couple games Andrew Wiggins really got into Jason Tatum's head. The play that you're talking about with 7:30 going on this video where Tatum has got Steph I think you didn't mention that Wiggins is there in the help position. At that point Tatum should have given it up. Horford was wide open for three. Instead he took a very ill advised shot. Also it's a 12-point game and they have the chance to put it into single digits and instead Golden State ends up getting a basket on the other end.

@@anthoops3073 his stats were good I'll give you that. He wasn't a leader though, he can't finish games. Many times he just didn't want to take responsibility and passed the ball to his teammates in crucial situations when he had open looks. He doesn't force any contact when he has size advantage, sometimes played like a shooter on the arc and needed Brown to step up. He's one of the best offensive weapons and strictly FINISHERS in the league. But as the best player on a contending team? He's not high on the list. I'll give him a pass for 2nd round and conf finals, but Giannis and Butler were the clear best player in those series.

Wow, @Yung Mustard comes through with another amazing analysis that we NEVER get from the mainstream news media. I really felt like Jayson Tatum was the main reason the Boston Celtics lost the NBA Finals. Why didn't Ime Udoka recognize what worked in Game 1 and gameplan more of that? Clearly, the Warriors had Tatum locked up, so it's a huge mystery why the Celtics kept going to Jayson play after play after play (which usually ended in a miss, a turnover, or a jump ball). 🤦

Smart wining DPOY was the most garbage media push I've ever seen. It was really apparent the media was gonna push Boston's hype hard because their moronic fans lap it up. My guess tho is that he's a future hall of famer. I think he has more than another couple levels left before reaching his ceiling, which should be scary for the rest of the league.

I personally don’t think Tatum is overrated. The reason Giannis got so much criticism was that he won MVP and was put in the best player convo. As good as Tatum has been, he has never been in that convo. As for booker, I treated him the same as Tatum because the finals is different. As for harden, he was being compared to Kobe and mj scoring wise, so all his criticism was valid. Tatum needs to manage his emotions (in other words Don’t let the refs mess with your game). I consider Tatum the 9th-10th best player in the NBA. I believe Tatum can be the number one option on a championship team if he plays with less finesse (he seems like a pretty strong player) and stops complaining to the refs (devin booker syndrome).
