There were boycotts, a whole movement, simply to protect a historic flavour people grew to love. I know I'm being that guy by replying to an old ass comment but I wanna add context. In German its very common to shorten words or have nicknames for something that is typically two syllables (or sometimes three) and ends in a vowel. I don't know why it is exactly but something I've noticed. The name Fanta was likely a way to latch on to that trend. I'm guessing the joy and life thing is something in the same boat as the myth that it was created in a truck in Mexico which I believe Coke has pushed to distract from the real history of it being invented in Germany in 1940 so that Coca-Cola Germany could still produce something after the US embargo removed Coke due to the whole starting another war thing... so yeah I don't know how Aaron missed that entirely and thought it's just some generic Sunkist competitor brand

Fun Fact! Generic soda is made by the same name brand companies, similar to generic TV's! My grandpa used to work for Coke. He said in between shifts when the machines are not properly calibrated, the soda ran through the machine is not quite balanced right but it is still kept and sold as the Generic version. It's the same way with TV's, only 3ish big companies manufacture all tv parts and different companies buy the parts and brand them for their company.

In regards to the fanta: Depending on what off brand you got, it could have caffeine, which Fanta does not. If either of you are at all caffeine sensitive, that could be responsible for the perceived improvement in flavor in the knockoff brand
