Makeup, in my opinion, is like spices or sauce for a dish. It should be complimentary, but not the main focus. However, just like my opinion, it all boils down to personal taste.

I don’t wear makeup often, but when I do, it isn’t bc I feel ugly. I know women who do wear it for that reason, but I also know women who don’t do it for that. Personally, I’ll do it for special occasions to enhance my looks in the same way I’d wear a flattering outfit or style my hair. I still look like me, so it doesn’t seem like a lie. My husband happens to like it when I wear makeup, but I guess that comes down to personal preference and perhaps the style of makeup. I can see how intent could become an issue, but I fail to see how the action itself is problematic.

I appreciate Peter Kreeft. Loving, kind, not so quick to jump in and judge. His kindness makes me weep because it's so wonderful (and rare, in my experience). Matt, women have so many struggles. Trying to look and feel attractive among them. Not just for themselves. Not just to catch a man. But just to keep from being misjudged as ugly or lazy (because of being overweight), etc. You do not need to add to that the accusation that we're lying. Cameron is gorgeous without makeup. Not all of us are. Some of us have been called names when seen without makeup. People, including Christians, don't treat us as well as slender, beautiful women. I also have to say ... Your advice about taking a woman to the beach or a pool on the first date so you can see how she really looks. What IS that? (It's NOT trust-earning, especially for the reason you gave.) It sounds like looks are very important to you (otherwise, why is it so important to see it washed off?), which is exactly why we wear makeup. Many of us feel very vulnerable without makeup, and that's not an appropriate way to want a girl to feel on a first date. Are looks more important than what a woman is like inside? Apparently, if you have to cruelly trick her into showing you her "naked" face. You wear clothes. What are YOU hiding? Are you lying? Guys ... Treat your daughters, wife, girlfriend, and friends well. Show how important her character is to you. Keep telling her how beautiful she is (if you honestly mean it). She probably will ... sloooowly ... begin to wear less and less makeup and even get to where she doesn't have to wear any. At least around you. Because she believes you see her as she REALLY is. She trusts you. It's like going outside and standing very still with a little food in your hand, day after day, to earn a doe's trust. How rewarding it is when she finally trusts you. Tricking a woman into showing herself, calling her a liar if she's not ready to be vulnerable. Those are NOT ways to help her trust you.

I appreciate this so much! I went fully gray at 45 after years of dyeing my hair. I made the choice to stop because I felt like I was not being authentic which really bothered me. It makes me sad seeing women in their 50’s and up dyeing their hair because they’re not fooling anyone with it anymore. It’s sickening to see the fetish men have with younger women. Add to that marketing and Hollywood telling us to stay perpetually young. Ageing happens to us all. I pray that we can learn to accept that truth and know that there is beauty to be found in inner wisdom and growing old gracefully.

I don't condemn women wearing make-up, but I also wouldn't appeal to the story of Esther. Esther is not a happy romance story, it is pretty dark. She was being prepared to be part of pervert king Ahasuerus's harem. Ahasuerus was not exactly a good man, look at how he treated Vashti when she wouldn't show off her body in public and he degraded Esther and many other women and he initially gave permission to kill all of the jews in his empire. I'm not saying that it isn't an inspired story, it just definitely isn't meant to be a romance, it makes Ecclesiastes look cheery. There are romantic stories in the Bible, but christians should realize that women like Esther were not being pampered out of love for them, they were being prepared to be part of the king's harem and he was sexually trying them out. If there is anything that we can learn from the story, it is that husbands should pamper their wives so that they can get away with absolutely anything! Just playing. lol

I certainly think it's important and healthy to let people see us without makeup, if only to release ourselves from the insecurity of wondering what people would think of our 'real' face. But I also don't think having fun with a tinted lip gloss takes away from our 'real' face. As someone else put it, you could just as easily call deodorant 'lying about B.O.' No, these things are just elements of our self-presentation culture as social beings. We wear colourful clothes; we style our hair. Maybe we just want to decorate ourselves artistically, and it's not some psychological self-hating plot of deception. I've probably spent most of my life not wearing makeup. I'm fine with it. But I also find it fun to sometimes wear makeup. I'm not doing it to entrap anyone into believing I have a different face than I do. I'm doing it because I love beauty: in the play of light on the ocean, in the intricacy of a complex flower, and in the harmony of a human face. Yes, a human face is already beautiful -- but we can PARTICIPATE in co-creating that God-given beauty with a tinted lip gloss in just the right shade to complement our hair and eyes. Or a touch of colour near the eye that creates a physics-aided effect with how light hits the viewer's eye, helping the colour of the iris glow more brightly in the eyes of the viewer. (E.g. for a woman with deep brown eyes which actually have a hint of purple in them but you wouldn't usually notice -- adding some burgundy eyeliner will help you see what was already there.) Good makeup, artistically applied, helps the viewer see your beauty BETTER. It's not about hiding you, but showing you. It's fun. I think a line should really be drawn between tasteful minimal makeup touches, artistically applied to enhance and showcase a woman's natural beauty, and degrading processes like plastic surgery or outright masks of pigment. Lumping everything in as if all personal decoration is wrong (when applied to the skin but excusing hair and clothes for some reason) doesn't seem appropriate. At least, not unless the Church herself actually teaches this. And considering all the prominent and holy Catholic women who wear makeup, I don't think she does.

Perhaps for special occasions like theater or if one attends some festival it's a part of the art. I think people are too imprecise when they talk about makeup. There's makeup and makeup. A very visible makeup along with having had various procedures (eg lips) vs. discreet so-called nude makeup, are two universes apart. Most people, especially men, when they speak about makeup, they speak about the visible and colorful one. When women wear makeup, they usually mean anything, including a simple foundation, delicate mascara and maybe a lipgloss. Most men wouldn't even notice that. I've heard few times people told me something along the line "but you don't wear any makeup do you", when I actually had a foundation l, a mascara, a bit of blush, maybe even a discreet eye shadow. At the same time, many woman when having absolutely no makeup whatsoever, may look quite pale, especially in artificial office lighting. I agree that strong make-up is not appropriate/modest in most settings, unless maybe some fancy occasion/evening out (still be careful to not overdo it, same as with clothes.). Just common sense and moderation.

In a previous episode with Christopher West, he mentions the fear of aloneness/death that accompanies the obsession with youthful looks (i.e.: plastic surgery and photoshop filters). Respectfully, I disagree with your mom about formal events requiring makeup! You can look very formal and put-together without makeup by simply having a clean face, done hair, and properly fitted dress and jewelry. Is Make up lying? I am personally not for Makeup and let my wife know that I would rather her not wear enormous amounts of make up because she is so beatiful without it that it is just a mask. However I don't have a problem with a moderate amount of make up. I wouldn't say that me getting a haircut or keeping my beard in a proper fashion vanity. No I really just like to keep it contained and not out of control. Is it lying to keep my hair in check. Is it wrong for me to gel my hair? Is it sinful to take medecine to feel better? Is it wrong for me to use sunblock denying God the sun he gave us? I would say that make up is not lying or sinful unless you are trully using for vain reasons. So Makeup for vanity=bad. make up to change who you are =bad overuse of make up =bad. Getting a haircut? trimming a beard? Cleanshaven? Medicine to feel better? Preventitive measures for skin health? We can dwell on these questions but in the end I think the question we need to take literally is does it bring us closer to God or does it lead us down a sinful path of worship of ourselves?

Lots of time when men say they prefer a particular woman who “isn’t wearing makeup” what they are seeing is a woman who has spent a long time applying makeup designed to look like she isn’t wearing makeup. Watch a movie set in the 1700s or some other pre-modern time. The actresses look “naturally” beautiful. They are wearing loads of makeup applied by professionals to get that look. Women can usually tell when a woman really has no makeup versus natural-looking makeup, and when we point to the women who are truly makeup-free and ask for a male opinion, without fail a guy will think she looks sick or unattractive. Try it as an experiment sometime. Show guys pics of the same woman with no makeup and with “no makeup” look makeup, and see which photo they think is more appealing. They might not be able to say exactly why she looks better in one pic, but they’ll notice the difference.

Most women use “natural” makeup, when they don’t people tell them that they look sick. We have been culturally programmed to find actually natural women not look as attractive (we have hyperpigmentation, blemishes, baggy eyes, etc etc). When someone eats good food, gets exercise, is generally healthy…they smell fine and look attractive. Obviously, I’m not talking about someone who hasn’t had a shower in days. So that's not an accurate comparison. My beard grows on my face naturally, your makeup does not. Yet I look more attractive with a beard than without, so that argument doesn't work either. Brushing teeth, same as deodorant. Nobody likes stinky breath, while again, some prefer makeup and others don't. And for the sake of argument, I do infact roll out of bed without doing anything with my hair because it's short. Even though linger hair with my face shape looks better. It's less maintenance. I don't think it's to look attractive (granted, I don't know). At this point it's so normal, and since we hide the unmodified as much as possible, if they don't, I suspect they get a lot of bad comments. However, that's when it's at maximal levels of the population. I think most of the makeup, clothes, exaggerated purses, and the like are not aimed at men. They're aimed at women and what they think. This gets it all normalized, then after it's normalized it hits the stage I mentioned above where, if you don't, the social pressure of "Are you OK?"/"You're weird" keeps it there.
@mollym6375
@mollym6375 Ай бұрын
Yea, I think that this is a cursed discourse. Makeup operates on individual and social levels. I think in women for a particular, especially within the familial context, it's a way to have shared female time. For example, I don't ever have any memory of going makeup shopping with my brother and then assessing how the shades of makeup or particular contouring patterns added balance to my face. That's something I only do with my mom and sisters. And so I think from that perspective, makeup is an artistic endeavor and it seeks to bring about a perfection in the face or to highlight certain attributes. My husband is pretty indifferent to makeup. He's told me he likes it when I don't wear it. I personally think I look like a Sea hag when I don't wear it. So what's a girl to do? What? I would really enjoy a conversation on are extensions. Because if makeup is sinful then oh boy, I'd love to hear what they think about extensions. I used to listen to a lot of Matt Fradd, but anymore. I just think that he sounds very reductive and a bit like an ideologue.

I don’t think makeup makes women more beautiful, it makes them more sexual, generally speaking. The darkened eyes, the flushed cheeks, rouged lips, are all meant to evoke the bedroom. Covering up flaws is a different matter, so that seems fine, as long as it’s not taken to the extreme. Like covering up acne. Once you start covering your whole face with something I think that’s a problem.

There's a good point here ! Applies to clothing as well, and it can even get pretty subtle. I don't think either (relatively speaking) are off-limits, it's more that it boils down to time/place and intention (basically, I agree with Aquinas). Sexual attraction is a part of life, but the problem with modern society (imo) is that we women think we need to have our sexual attractiveness blasted publicly and ceaselessly, in order to be "nice-looking" and not ugly. There are ways to look pleasant and pretty without relying on more sexual evocations, even the more subtle ones. However, I'd also caveat this with my personal thought that we should strive not to harshly judge each other's specific ways of trying to live out such truths; let everyone respond as they personally understand best, as long as they are exposed to and convicted of the truths themselves. (I was considering for instance that maybe in different cultures, people may have a different ideas about beauty, and so one person's version of modesty may not look *exactly* the same as another's?) Also, where one person is struggling or still growing, they may be more virtuous than us in another area. Hence again the need to refrain from playing judge. Most of all, we should probably each focus more on our own intentions and decisions, far more than trying to label others'. (This isn't to naysay this Pints conversation in particular, though, it wasn't offensive to me and seemed plenty respectful. I am thinking more about how people in general, myself included, can get very judgmental)

The bit about not trying to look younger because it's lying about "falling apart inside" isn't consistent. I see he is wearing clothes that probably weren't made 40 years ago. Why is Dr. Kreeft lying by wearing something that is not consistent with what's beneath? "Oh, but you have to replace clothes because they rip and tear and fall apart and they stop functioning properly as clothes." Ah. I see. So it's ok to have that mindset with clothes and not consider it "lying" when you buy new clothes, but it's lying when you have the same mindset with skin? "Well God gave us skin, so it's an affront to what he gave us." God gave clothes to Adam and Eve in Genesis, so replacing the clothes given to us at the earliest possible point where they will fit for life is an affront to what God gave us through our family. "That's different because clothes are not meant to last a life time. You can't take your skin off at the end of the night. The nature of clothing is to come off and on at various times." True, but why buy new ones? The heart of Kreeft's argument is to not lie about what's underneath (the aging process) so buying new clothes is in concert with attempting to put a "fresh face" to something old. Perhaps he could refine the argument to be more precise (it was off the cuff), but as presented it is inconsistent with him wearing clothes older than the last time he grew. Who cares if they would have patches and mismatched fabrics? That's part of the aging process, don't fight it, don't lie about the skin underneath. "Well that's preposterous. No one actually would live that way given the choice." Exactly.

This is so ridiculous in my opinion. Of all the problems facing the church -women who like to wear make up is not one of them. 😂 I love to wear up. It makes me feel feminine and put together. I will also say this- I had to be on high doses of hormones to prevent miscarriage with all four of my pregnancies and the hormones gave me a skin condition called hyperpigmentation/melasma as well as tremendous amounts of acne. To this day, I prefer to use make up to cover up the scars so that people can just focus on me and not the massive scarring on my face. Blemishes and scars on the face are psychologically detrimental to the person suffering from them, and this has been proven by psychological science. This is why acne treatment is required to be covered by medical insurance. Next time you feel like a woman is “ lying to you “ because she’s wearing make up maybe consider the things that she has been through in her life before you pass judgment. 😊

I am very light (blue eyed, blonde) and as I aged, my eyelashes turned clear and my eybrows are so pale you can barely see them.😅.

Mine were always that way. You hardly notice that I have eyes without eyeshadow.

I am about to piss off the men. If you live in an area or are of an age where you have a woman SERVANT, making you your meals, cleaning your house, washing your clothes, and you are willing to provide a home for her to safely sleep in, then she probably won't need make up. This topic...umph.

Similar to tattoos. Someone asked did Jesus have tattoos? Did Jesus wear makeup? We're supposed to emulate him.

I wonder what guys think when they dare women who wear lots of make up, then get married and, just be honest, what is it like in the house? Do you not think she is pretty? Do you like it when she makes up for an outing or work or church? I saw LOTS of women wearing LOTS of make up at a water park. It was so crazy looking. Just young girls looked that way.
