It would be nice if NP schools would teach students on what to look for in a contract and what to negotiate for. I will be graduating with my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree this May and had received a contract to work for a private practice clinic once I graduate. I was so happy to get the offer but at first I wasn’t sure what I should look for in the contract. Thank goodness everything turned out fine and I’m excited to start working as a NP soon.

Great advise. I am an RN in a nursing home. They pay $50 an hr, pretty good but they're always short on nurses. I agree with you that they don't pay nurses enough. The census in my unit is 48 patients. So, technically I get paid $1.00 and change per hour/patient. The pay is not enough for all the suffering.

The older we get the more we think about and consider. Retirement, benefits and the like are usually not as important in your 20s because you're simply trying to land that job to make that 6 figure income. But when them 30s and 40s start creeping up we realize that 6 figures alone ain't it! Having a 401k match, pension, 5 weeks PTO/yr, 2 weeks/yr sick leave, a multitude of health insurance to choose from, and yearly pay increases are some of the BEST benefits working for the government. I know we always hear negative things about the VA but listen there's a reason why people never leave once they get in and I love it. Nursing at the VA is nothing compared to my previous jobs, I have half the work, I make more, and have the benefits are unmatched!

Calling people greedy for making a reasonable salary, especially for very difficult and important work, is wild. People who have more money than they could ever spend and still seek more, that's greedy. Making a comfortable living wage is not. And money only matters to a point. Mental and physical health are important. Always appreciate that you are honest and straightforward.

I totally agree. Nurses/Np do not get paid enough. I am currently a staff nurse and wondering what is next for me because the pay is not giving what it needs to give. And I find it ridiculous that the only way to see some form of compensation in our pay is to do travel nursing.

Do travel nursing for sure. They do take local even though people try to scare you and say they don't. Travel nursing shows that hospitals really can pay nurses a proper salary, but they won't until all the staff nurses leave and they get desperate.

The same thing happens in Maryland as well. My first job in 2019 started with a salary of 90k. And it didn’t have the option of getting anymore per pt if you saw more. I did have 2 weeks vacation and 500 per year for CME. Health insurance was so expensive through them it was cheaper to purchase my own plan. This was a M-F 8hrs a day job. But I never would be done my charts until 8pm on average some nights until 11 depending on how many patients we had. This was a pediatric primary care office. I barely ever had a medical assistant so I was doing that part of the job as well which is a lot with children due to all the vaccines etc. I left after 1 year only I wasn’t gonna keep doing that to myself. Good thing is in Maryland you can have your own practice. I’m looking into that right now bc it makes more sense. We make these practices so much money and are not compensated enough for it. I’m now at an urgent care that has obviously been hit hard bc of everything going on right now. We went from seeing 25-35 pts per day to on average 60s but as high as 100. This is with one provider at the center alone typically. Here and there it’s 2 providers. We got 1 bonus due to high census 4 months ago that was 1000$ and a holiday bonus of 2000$. Benefits through them are expensive as well so it’s cheaper to buy on your own. And again only 2 weeks PTO. The benefits are better working for a big company in my area but the pay is significantly less. Big hospitals like Hopkins and Univ of MD are starting NP’s at 80-95k as new grads when you can even get in which is close to impossible to do. 100k is only reserved if you have experience but if you make that amount the benefits are not as good with “smaller” companies. It’s crazy.

I appreciate everything you’ve said in this video. As a AGPCNP now with 5 years of experience working at the same practice out of school, my perspective has changed in regards to just salary alone. Advocate for as high of a starting base salary as you can (especially if a new grad), but include percentage or specified dollar amount raises over time in your contract and scheduled performance reviews. If you have experience and can demand a higher starting salary, that’s ideal. I agree, benefits/perks are paramount. This should include health, dental, vision insurance, short and long term disability, life insurance (typically one years salary), 401k (match/profit sharing), CME (at least 3 days, should be a full week and $2500/year with reimbursement for additional certifications pertaining to your position), coverage of licensure renewals/certification renewal, etc. Some of these items can be off set by a higher base salary, but make sure you are calculating the overall cost to you over one year to see if this makes sense. Other things to consider are your general hours, call requirements, required weekends/holidays, allotted PTO/sick time. Now that I have a family, my priorities have changed. I just want to say you are very inspirational to me. Watching someone who looks like me in a position that I aspire to be in is so motivating. I am an LPN and I have reached a point in my career where I can no longer care about money. I just want to be at peace and happy so if that means taking a pay cut then I am okay with that. The mindset of chasing the bag left me stressed out and feeling exhausted. I would work jobs that paid well but had NO BENEFITS. None. I have learned the importance of benefits and I will get that high paying job with benefits in due time. I say all this to say I resonated with this topic.

Yes to this entire video! There needs to be classes in NP around salaries, contract negotiations, etc. I graduated as an AGNP in 2015. Also it would be great if we as NPs were more forthcoming with our students and colleagues about salaries and benefits. You don't know what you don't know. As a new grad, it helps to know what others are making so you're being reasonable with salary requests/expectations. Definitely ask for paid time off and/or expenses covered for Continuing education, a work schedule that fits your family life e.g. maybe 10a-6p works better or 4 ten hour days, admin time to allow you to review charts and call patients, and covering license and DEA renewals (DEA is now $888!).

Agreed! I'm starting to wonder if the lack of discussion pertaining to salaries, negotiating contracts etc is by design. I'm not saying that NP programs are morally complicit, but the NP instructors with many years of experience should be advocating to have contracts/salary negotiation education included in the curriculum- not even a full semester, just 1 or 2 lectures would be meaningful. Almost everyone in health-care is overworked and underpaid. It gives me hope that more APRNs are becoming more vocal about this topic as well as the havoc it's wreaking on our health. Becoming more transparent with each other is one way to combat these issues along with participating in our local nursing organizations. We keep hearing so much about over saturation, and difficulty finding jobs after graduation that many of us are just grateful to be hired, more so if in a specialty we feel drawn to, that we're reluctant to speak up when it's time to renegotiate our contracts. I'm hoping that I can help other NP's avoid the mistakes I've made, and know their worth. And no, there's nothing wrong with wanting to be well compensated with decent benefits, and boundaries that allow us to have work-life balance.

After the executive director, who hired me & I loved working w/, retired the place started to go downhill. Like you, I stayed the additional 2 years because I was loyal. I have had this conversation with many NP’s and they feel the same way you do and quite frankly I came across a few miserable ones, again it seems to me that NP’s are being taken advantage of just like everyone else across the field (CNA’S are still making $10/hr in FL caring for 15 pt’s 😳, LPN’s can barely make $20/hr, new grad RN’s start $22-$ 23/hr) and the cost of leaving is no longer as low as it use to be and YESSSSS so are travel nurses. I have been doing it since the pandemic the only easy assignment have had was vaccination, hospitals give us THE WORSE assignment girl I can’t even begin to explain just because of the salary, in general the attitude is your gonna get that “NP money/ travel salary” but they will run you to the ground it’s frustrating no matter where we are, idk what the solution is at this point honestly, do I make any sense?!?!🤷🏽‍♀️ ( Keep the faith my sister God is able)

I agree. 6 figures is not everything. I have been making that for last 6 years. Now I want to have quality of life. I became a travel MT 3 years ago. It gives me flexibility, freedom and opportunity to travel. I work 3 x12 per week and have 4 days to myself. I mostly always in rural towns that are not busy so I don't do much work. It's great!!! And I agree, make sure you negotiate your contract well.

My first job was Kmart as well girl lmao. Now a new grad NICU resident 💕 I don’t think you’re asking for too much at ALL. Given thatI live in Oregon, and pay is pretty high…. It wouldn’t mean squat to me if I didn’t have BASIC benefits. Like you stated, this is a career. I honestly feel like nurses need to keep demanding more. Here in CA, FNP make the same as pediatricians which includes full medical/dental/vision/pension etc… so, in some areas of the US they do. Additionally, NP’s in California are unionized (strength in number). We just solidified new rules to our contracts that if some hospitals post a job for PA’s they must also post the same available position for NP 😉.

@@theshinythings123 FNP is worth it to me because of the advanced knowledge & practice. FNP is something I’ve wanted to become since undergrad many years ago. It’s important to consider your motivation when considering if FNP is worth it. As far as pay is concerned, I hear from many nurses that they would make the same at the bedside as an NP but, I haven’t seen that. I live in NorCal too & idk any bedside nurse making $180,000 w/o working 120 hrs per pay period. There are other factors to consider as well such as where you work. An FNP working for Kaiser is going to make more than an FNP working at UC or Sutter.

I’ve just found your channel. I haven’t laughed so hard at a YT video in quite a while. You are marvelous. You are correct. Money is not everything but good luck building a life and security for yourself and your family without it. I think some of your viewers misunderstood you or your motives. It is clear to me that you did not become an NP to make 6 figures. Your nursing career is just that. A professional career. We take years to educate ourselves, hone our craft to become the best we can in our profession. We are compensated with money and benefits. Suffice it to say, you did not further your education and career to make less money and benefits. Correct? Unfortunately, I think there is inherent bias in some people’s perception of women and their motives for seeking career advancement. It’s disappointing to see how others want to comment on what you, an educated, highly skilled adult woman, are supposed to want or not want. I could be wrong but if you were male, I don’t think you would have had those same comments. I had no intention of writing such a lengthy comment. I thank you for sharing your story. Travel nurses get paid more than doctors. I know NP school is hard nights of anxiety and stress but I’m sure medical school is more. I know doctors that make 150-180k with no 401k. So I don’t know but some Nursing contracts sound good to me.

I have learned as a medical administrator 6 figures face value does not matter because you don’t know what’s coming with that. People don’t make that your focus. Learn about what it entails research and ask questions in the interview. NPs get dumped on to do the majority of the work. If you know then you know. The nasty nurses and NP are getting enough maybe to much. Those who truly care and work hard taking the company and patient abuse, harassment, etc. deserve more money. It can kill your passion hint the shortage.

I believe people should become NP because they really want to be, and not for higher income and status upgrade. Yes, you may earn higher income but it doesn’t come for free, and if you think about how NP job was started basically you are doing physician’s job for less pay with greater liability. I don’t think most NP school teach students enough to be prepared as a provider.

95,000 with zero benefits is a contract. So about 20-30 percent of that will go to buying your own healthcare.

I believe in doing my best and truly care for people, I have a goal in life that I can leave some financial help to my grand-babies also live debit free , really want more of a income at least 150,000 with all the benefits, but my Career I still want passion to be there and want to take at least 2 nice vacation with husband and family and retirement money saved , we have to really take care of our mental and physical! also the cost and living in Maryland it's expensive , I have faith God says take care of his people and he will take care of you ,,,My lord and savior will give me strength, thank you Jesus!! If a physician is not making 6 figures there would be no need to hire a NP! The physicians that hire NPs know the value of bringing a NP onboard, it brings in more income to their practice. To say some physicians barely make 6 figures really have nothing to do with this argument because if they are not making 6 figures their practice cannot afford to bring on additional providers. Now the NP training I do agree needs improvement.

@@fromcnatonp what he is trying to say, regardless of the practice your working for, is that for a master degree and half the student debt the wages and benefits is not bad. NP think they get low wages but so do FM physicians. How does a physician wage correlate with a practice having NP. It actually makes sense. If the physician is getting paid less then the NP will get paid even less.
