The ugly side of nursing is most definitely nurse bu!!ying or what many nurses call "nurses eat their young" I have been in nursing for more than 10yrs and I have had my share of intimidation and nurses trying to eat me, because I was a young inexperience nurse.
In todays video I am sharing some of my experiences and how I handled them and my advice for any nurse that is going through a similar experience.

I’ve been a nurse for 14 years, and have been severely bullied multiple times over the years. I’ve always tried to just hang in there, and have realized prayer is the only thing that helps. God puts us where He needs us, and when it’s time to move along, He makes sure that we do.

I had an experience of being bullied. It has been said that older nurses tend to "eat their young". I was a new graduate in '03. I was treated very badly by mostly older white nurses. It's like they were upset that I was an RN instead of a CNA. They would be very rude when I asked usual questions that new nurses tend to ask. I transferred to another hospital and was welcomed and was charge nurse for over 10 years in a med/surg setting.

Freshman nursing student here, also a CNA. I have been bullied more time than I can count. The worst part of this is there is no one to report it to. I realize that the only way to deal with these bullies is to just put them in their place in a professional manner.

We NEED more nurses who are humble. Some nurses tend to forget how they were once a student, new grad and/or the new nurse “on the block.” I made a commitment to be the CHANGE and NEVER become that way as I advanced in my career. I’m an LVN working on my BSN . I’m just going to say it! Bullying and RACSIM in nursing and in health care is very real. Being judged not by your experience or knowledge but by the color of your skin is very sad. I’ve experienced it first hand myself. I just appreciate your content so much. Play dumb! I’m new to healthcare and received amazing opportunities straight out of school. As a float staff, every location I’m created with this strange collective coldness and borderline sabotage towards me. I act as if I don’t even notice! I am kind, and am NOT discouraged from asking questions no matter how annoyed they get. I do my job and show them that I learn quickly and I stay out of the drama. In the end, the ice always melts away and they all start to adore me! 🥰

Thank you for this vlog. Bullying in nursing is a disease. There needs to be a law against bullying generally. And all institutions need to address nurse bullying and levy the highest punishment for this.

I am also a NP. I went to see a patient on the floor in a prestigious hospital. I was wearing my ID and white coat. I believe I also had braids. No one acknowledged my presence but I asked for nurse assigned to the patient. Can you believe she said she was in a hurry to get her notes done and had no time to speak with me. I talked about this for days, I was so angry and felt so hepless because I know if I said something they would try to tell me what I experience was not real. I have been a nurse for 39 years and more than half that time as a NP. It is getting worst.

I like the paper trail as it's a great strategy. I have experienced the worst bullying and under-minding when as a floor nurse I transferred to ICU from Cardiac Stepdown floor. I was treated horribly and was brought before the Nursing Director under the guise that I had "no critical thinking skills" ( this is after 20+ years as a nurse at the time with an impressive career resume). I was basically let go from the hospital and placed as a do not return based upon the accusations. That happened in 2018.

I went through some similar things. My former work environment was cliquish. My preceptor would walk around making up rumors about me. They also gave me the more challenging assignment. I just handled it like a boss. I ignored them & kept thriving.

I am listening three years into my nursing career. I was bullied and am still being bullied as the only black male nurse on the most units. I just know how to handle it now.It affects your mental health and makes you sick and hate to go to work. Nursing is very toxic HR needs a zero tolerance policy against bullying and discrimination because they really don’t take it seriously when you report bullying and discrimination. I want to share my stories after listening to your videos bc we only learn by educating each other.

I remember I transitioned from ER to ICU after nearly 2 years. The preceptor I was placed with on Day 1 sent me to change a central line dressing, I asked her to watch her do one first since in the ER residents placed dressings after they placed the line. Also, I only did dressings on mannequins in nursing school. Her response was "That's basic nursing!" Refused to show me. Needless to say, I changed preceptors... and I got my CCRN after only 4 months in the ICU 😬

New subbie here! About to binge your videos while I complete my Human Pathophysiology study guide. I’m a prenursing student going for my BSN. Once I graduate, I’m going to work as an RN while going for my NP at my same school. I’m a CNA and I had the WORST night at work last week. I had 24 patients by myself and I had to do vitals q4 on EVERYONE. There were six nurses working that night, and only ONE tried to help me!!! One!! The charge nurse would sit at the desk on the phone and watch me as I tried to move room to room and she would still call me on my work phone to answer call lights. She made me feel like I was the slowest CNA in the world. When I finally took a 15 at 3am, I called my mom and broke down. I put in my two weeks notice that morning when I got off. Nurse bullying is REAL! I was seriously rethinking my decision to become a nurse. I’m glad that I found you and that you are living proof of the journey that I am currently on. I’ve wanted this for SO long, and I’m not letting anything or anyone stop me. At first I was upset that I left my job, but now I look at it as I just freed up some more study time 😉 Please keep the videos coming and thank you for being an inspiration!! 🥰

I have been there working as a CNA and drained and nurses sit back and not help, I have never had that many patients as a CNA ever with no help, that is just ridiculous. I am sorry you had to quit but like you said you now have time to focus on studying and go for your ultimate goal. Yes!!! Countless times of me being asked if I'm the aide 🤦🏾‍♀️ I was once the administrator of a pediatric medical day care. The DON's appearance was the opposite of mine. People who came in with questions or whatever else would ignore me and talk to her. They would ignore my attempt to engage them and avoid eye contact with me. Then the DON would say you have to talk to her (pointing to me) and then they are like "Oh". Now they have to look at me and speak to me. This happened countless times. These things should not be...but they are. Love your vids!

This happens in a lot of other fields. My girlfriend is an Engineer at a top company and she also happens to be one of the top manager with a team of about 20 ppl under her and it is disgusting how ppl ask her if she is the customer service rep! Nursing really need to change bc a lot of times you don't see minorities working in a lot of the critical care area. We just need to work hard to make it happen. Thanks for watching!

Yes, the bullying is disgusting. I had 24 yrs of experience when i switched to SDS & was treated horribly. Attacking me verbally for any mistakes while being trained what their protocol was on that floor. The training was fault finding & hap harzardly done. One time in front of patient, and i had to tell the nurse to "back off, not in front of the patient." ☹️. They undermine you in front of everyone. It's never been ok.

You are not lying and it is the sad truth. I am a black mixed nursing student of color in the San Francisco Bay area and when I did a rotation at Stanford I was mistreated by Asian and white nurses sadly. I even had to call the board of nursing on one of them. When I would come to the floor in the morning and get my assignment a lot of the Asian charge nurses would give me an ugly confused look like they were confused why I was even there. And then when my white fellow student nurse would come everyone was so happy and welcoming to her so I could see exactly what was going on and I just got through my day. Similar things happened at almost every clinical rotation the white student nurses were received very warmly and the others weren’t and I’m not the only one in my class who has spoken up about this. It’s 2022 and we are in San Francisco and you’d think that this would not be happening but it is. Elitism racism classism oh yeah it’s all in full effect.

I didn't realize how much being bullied effected me until it was time to say nurses were heroes when the Pandemic first began. It was difficult to rally collectively when nurse bullying is an ongoing plague in and of itself. It happens from the executive and administrative levels as well. The higher ups will quickly take you to the nursing board in some States to attempt to get the license to practice taken away.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have been in the medical field for more than 28 years. I started out in the military so 10 of the years was as a hospital corpsman. I was a nurse for 14 years and CNM/ WHNP going into my fourth year. As the only black provider in OB, I was bullied and questioned all the time. It got to the point that it felt like they set me up to not call me when a baby's heart rate was down in the 60s. As the midwife, I could assess the situation but let them know to call the attending. I was in the clinic and just decided in between patient to check on the labor patients. As I walked on the floor, they rushed me to tell me the baby had been down for 8 minutes. I immediately told them to call the backup and asked why no code was called? That day, they blamed me for not calling the code and then began to try to have me lose my midwifery license. These people are trying hard to ruin the black practitioners and nurses. It is so sad that they can continue to do this. So, as a midwife, I had to do a clinic and manage the labor deck. That means I was not readily on the floor. It did not matter. They were white and out to get me. I am like you. I will not allow them to stop me in my purpose. Thank you for being so strong in sharing this. For a few years, I was too embarrassed and traumatized to talk about it. They will not stop me. They were made because all the patients wanted me to be their provider. When white doctors would offer recommendations, they would say," I appreciate your opinion, but midwife Nicky is my provider; please let me speak to her first. This fueled the fire for them to go after me. NO WEAPON FORMED AGAINST ME SHALL PROSPER.

Love your posts. Nursing is truly the nastiest, most toxic culture I have ever worked in. The insecure, nasty nurses rise to the top and continue the toxic culture. How many patients have suffered because of this I wonder. (i.e. the charge who didn't like me assigned me a major trauma after I had been then 12 hours already, and she did not find anyone to tap me out, or send in more staff to help while we were trying to save a life, nor did she tell me the truth about the severity of the patient...surprise!) I should have walked out the first day of that last job when the charge nurse, instead of welcoming me as their new ER nurse, looked at me with distain and said WHO are YOU??! In a very rude manner. Of course once she found out, admin and her, tried to backtrack and made excuses..."oh, she was tired from her shift" I had 10 years ER experience, and someone started the rumor that I had "never worked in an ER before". Nasty, insecure, self-centered people. And most the nurses there were younger than me, with less experience as to what an actual "sick person" look like. I am a white woman. I don't play their childish high school "popularity" games and I call things as I see them. I worked in other professional industries before going back to school again. I have never, ever, dealt with such a horrible environment which is accepted industry wide. This is why their is a "nursing shortage". There are plenty of nurses out there, they just don't want to do it anymore! "A great man (woman) is hard on themselves, a small man (woman) is hard on others"

I needed this! I graduated may 2020 and was hired in the ER. I had other members of my cohort that were accepted right off the bat and I was “bullied”. I was constantly put in the “bad pods” where my learning could be dampened. I just continue to pray and came to the conclusion that I’m there to do my job and walk in my purpose for God and my patients. If I make friends great if not great! I’m not going to allow myself to feel “less than” by my peers. I have been an ER nurse for 10 months now! Thank you for this video

Medical assistant here 👋 everything you described pretty much was my whole externship. I got placed at this God awful clinic where there was the "pretty girls" & "older girls" and lastly the well for better lack of term "pompous girls" where they always thought they were right and trying to Crack jokes even a little wasn't a good move. This happened way too often, a nurse tried to explain to me how to give a sublingual drop ...like are you freaking kidding me "karen" I didn't get my license in a cereal box 😒. the disrespect. once I stood my ground I started to hear rumors that I'm lazy and don't want to work.. This is the second facility I experience situation like this. I would walk in and greet them and they acted like I wasn't even there. But I keep my head up, because I'm use to it from nursing school but that's a whole different conversation.

I am a former ER/ICU nurse. However worked about 7yrs in ICU with many of the same challenges you are discussing but like you said sometimes i see where the older nurses are jealous and do eat the young because of control and power struggle. I use to tell some of them off as i was not such a new nurse but new to ICU. Yes i shedded some tears but kept my focus and said to myself i have to kiss the ass until i can kick it". Later after about 2 to 3 yrs i was the most improved nurse with lots of added skills and God kept me like that for over 7yrs. Then took early retirement. It is very stressful working in both ER/ICU.

My gosh! It was insane during my orientation. One RN if she’s the charge was verbally abusive to me and I still have the image in my brain. She was sitting with legs spread, leaning back on a chair with wheels. She was literally barking at me what to do like I was a jumping scared new nurse. The others were watching. Her clicks. They were enjoying it like I was a snared rabbit, scared, new. I mean, the worst few years of my life. They were creating events to trip me over. Thankfully, God protected me. We started over a dozen new hired. Only 4 stayed. I was one of them. They had clicks, highly toxic. When I needed help, nobody was available. And I was videotaped which I wasn’t told. Nobody was available that I became very efficient changing dressings on arterial lines and other procedures. It can cause PTSD. Karma did happen a few years later. The major bully, from what I learned, was in psych from something. I believe she didn’t like her toxic face. I hope it’s memory doesn’t cause me distress soon because I can feel my heart again thinking of her. Same story, I was also going to school. It’s scary to be in a pack of wolves.

This is so true, I worked as a nurse extern and I felt I was excluded by some of the nurses and the techs on the unit. I felt sooo uncomfortable, even now as an RN. I would never go back to that unit to work.

Idk if being a man has shielded me from bullying, but I’ve always seen it around me, and called it out, so you’re completely correct in your concerns. The field is most certainly different for men than it is women, everywhere I’ve been, the staff have been nice & respectful to me, I am black btw, but I’m well aware that my experience may be skewed because I am lighter skinned than most & have colored eyes, so maybe some people get the wrong idea about what they think I am ethnically. But I haven’t had any issues, however, I’ve seen the problems with my own eyes, I even witnessed a fight between an MD & a nurse that nearly came to blows at the charge nurses desk, however we separated them & nothing happened thankfully (both were eventually terminated because of it) but the animosity in the work center is definitely real. There are some people who are just jealous of others for whatever reason or are just simply narcissists & psychopaths (seen this behavior too) the best you can do, which many employees fail to do, is document, document, document EVERYTHING, dates, times, locations, names of witnesses, you have to take mental notes then write them down, save them on an excel spreadsheet, whatever, but document the behavior, this skill served me well in my military days, when I had to deal with difficult subordinates, co workers or even superiors. It needs to be exercised in all jobs in every industry.

The apologetic bully is some of the worst. They say/do something awful to humiliate someone and when they get called out on it, they get all apologetic and saccharine sweet to save face. It's like they're just going to keep harassing you until you say it was OK to bully you. Never tell them its OK. Thats what they want and they will keep bullying as long as they think they're getting away with something. Instead say, I'm over it.

Maybe I am naive or don't understand the relationship between nurse/nurse manager here, but WHY do the nurse managers accept and tolerate this behavior? So unprofessional while people's lives hang in the balance - that is so selfish and terrible of these bully nurses. I have had family members in the ICU and to think this stuff is going on is unacceptable.

I have always thought i was the worst newly nursing graduate because I was treated so badly by an older nurse from my training in which i paid for. It was very traumatic for me that i stayed away from being a nurse for many years. Now, I'm thinking of coming back and now that I'm older and know myself more i hope i am strong enough to overcome these kind of adversities.

This is a word! I’m a seasoned ADN RN. I experience this daily! Do I need my BSN, yes, but I’m passed up frequently frequently for new grads just fir them to ask me to help that nurse acclimate! What?! Really, sis! Her and her BSN shining shining got that! No, I always help. I love to teach, but dang!! Lol!

I love your videos. I have been a nurse for 16 years and completely identify with everything you have described here. Like you, I initially would allow emotion to cloud the way I handled certain situations. But now with experience and wiser I am more mindful of how I approach people and situations when belittled, snubbed, or ignored while working on various nursing units.

I'm so confused at why people are like that instead of learning from eachother asking questions and creating a strong team? Like what?? As a nurse I relatively bew 2 years experience and I see every opportunity as a learning opportunity. I refreshed by new on coming nurses and I learn from experienced nurses I may be embarrassed to ask a question but I will never ever stop asking questions.

I’m not a nurse yet, I’m currently in nursing school. But as a CNA I worked in ICU and I loved it there! Everyone was super nice, if you did your job right and weren’t lazy, they liked and respected you. The nurses also got along with each other, they did have little cliques like eating together during lunch or whatever but the older nurses helped the new grads a lot. But now I’m scared though for when I become a new nurse cuz idk how it’s gonna be lol

Yes, I do feel sometimes the young attractive nurses are favored even if they have no experience in the hospital. Some of my coworkers who were hired fit into that mode. Even as a nursing student, I was bullied during my clinical rotation. I was completely clueless as a new nurse.

This was such a great talk / sad but true. Grad from 1986 . 3 years med surg tele in Pennsylvania. Move to CA and work at bigger hospital/hired on spot on real tele floor. Then 8 years CVICU, SICU Trauma neuro ICU. Was CCRN.... left to have my 2 boys... every experience was amazing and never bullied. I was a preceptor and the an the EXACT OPPOSITE OF NURSE EATING YOUNG... DO NOT GET IT. There is a eat to teach with wisdom and kindness. If you precept as a nasty or rude person, the preceptor will not learn. Her emotional state will be triggered, amygdala will hijack her prefrontal cortex... Fight flight freeze or fawn. When I returned I got feet wet by working in a LTC/ TCU bc so nervous to go back after 15 years. Did do a refresher.OMG!!!!! So unsafe conditions. On the rehab side, a nurse to have pts from hospital where they were 1:4 ratio and now thrust into 1:15. Could write a book. So I had to get back to where I am supposed to be / the hospital. I was 58 when hired into a hospital on MS TELE floor. Worked nights and the peeps were awesome and loving except my preceptor was exactly your experience. My biggest hurdle going back was computer charting. a preceptor is suppose to be by my side and be a continual source of guidance /support/ teaching. “ Felt like I was bothering her while time. It was a 6 week orientation for crossover nurses. ( RNreturning after being away from bedside). After 8 months working with this great bunch on nights, I was transferred to SCU/ ICU. But really just the SCU which is a tele floor. ( nothing like my tele floor in CA). Which was pure heart CABG, Valve, rhythm prov, post interventional, ( old school pressure on groin😉)... did a lot autonomously/ conscious sedation for elective cardioversion) ANYWAY,, I am transferred to the SCU bc of my background. I was elated to get back to my love cardiac. Well this floor is hell. Actually I was oriented 6 weeks on th day shift and then 3 nights as I was going to do nights. Couple things to say... healthcare ain’t what it used to be, I was severely bullied my the very first nurse I gave report to my first night working by myself - the day RN was schockingly rude. Then my life in and out of work was hell due to a night charge that repeatedly, targeting me, excluding me rude to me, talking about me to others blatantly. She did it in front of people. I could not focus. She interfered with my ability to function. Enough of that story I could write 100 pages( which I actually have as I have a kept a journal and paper trail of many things). I’m sorry I never rant or post. I am on days and away from her so it is better. Took awhile to be accepted on days but heaven compared to being with the chargeRn nights. I just wrote this bc your talk so resonated with me // immature and toxic workplace culture. All industry Bullying cost BIILIONS of $ loss. THANKYOU for addressing this serious problem💜

Somehow, nurses think being a bully makes the new nurse stronger. My transition into my NP role was waaayyy better and I was the first APP that my clinic of 4 MDs hired.

I just ran across this video. Before the pandemic, I was assaulted by a sadistic nurse while working as a travel RN in a hospital Psych unit after I asked her to stop yelling at my patient. After dealing with bully nurses while traveling in Georgia and Alabama, I quit travel nursing and I will never work in a hospital, ever again. I felt badly for the nurses that had to deal with the pandemic, but I was so traumatized by my hospital experiences that I decided to stick with home care. Nowadays I care for elderly and psych patients in a setting that provides mutual respect.

I agree and that has been my experience too. Bullying AND gross unprofessional behavior too. When I was in my BSN program, I foolishly thought nursing was a PROFESSION - meaning that RNs would behave PROFESSIONALLY 🤔 🙄 Yet, that didn't turn out to be the case - at least not in the hospital environment I started as a new grad. However, after reflection, I remembered what my Grandmother who was a RN said once - she said nursing was created originally by the military really, or in the military style. If you think of it in that context, then it all makes sense. And out of that then comes the phrase we've all heard that "nurses eat their young". To me, it's sad and does not help anyone (new nurses or our patients). And it DEFINITELY does NOT advance nursing or help in furthering the medical community's or the public's view as nursing as a PROFESSION. Too bad more nurses don't get this. Unfortunately, those types of nurses give nursing a bad name.

I love this so much I will be starting my next course to get my BSN in Nursing and I honestly and scared to go into the hospitals when I'm done, because so many people do say the older nurses are very rude and never help out they always look for something to point out on the new Nurses, I do work as a sitter at the hospitals and I see it so much they can be rude and hateful when they should be more welcoming and guide the new Nurse.

I was told that I couldn’t manage a certain assignment when I have 30 years of experience with that type of patient. It’s all because there was a certain employee who had privilege and access to the director and told her I wouldn’t be able to handle it. I reported it to corporate compliance. Suddenly I had enough experience.

Unfortunately, there are sorority like environments and hierarchies in the hospital. In every hospital I've worked in the state I live, there was racism, bigotry and the aspects mentioned above. Navigating the muddy sloppy choppy waters can be tricky. One thing I noticed though, is if your in a toxic environment GET OUT. There seems to be a trend, my experience was when I would start a job, there would be a nice balance of Uber Nice and professional people and the Ratchet Toxic group. When the Nice professionals would leave, the balance would be upended and the unit would quickly become totally toxic. My advice pay attention to the trend, if your manager and charges are toxic and alot of the nicer people are leaving, make a move to leave, if not you'll regret it. With poor ineffective toxic management and lack of incentives to stay, terrible nurse pt ratio , there's always going to be a high turnover, so always have a backup plan.
