Other factors beyond rolling resistence can be just as important. Like you stated grip in the wet . Other factors is grip in corners that can play a big part in a race . Puncture protection and one puncture away from loosing a podium . That's what's challenging with mountain biking which is all the variables

I got 2 of these as soon as they came out in Australia. Rekon Races are as rare as hens teeth down under this year. Got them for a 60km race, the Noosa Enduro, in late July.

Do you still run the Rekon Race? Would you recommend these tires for trail riding?
@letour32rr Жыл бұрын
Just did my first ride with the Maxxis Recon Race 29x2.4 on my Down Country bike and the speed of this tire is insane! It’s surreal to feel the difference in acceleration coming out of a corner with this vs the Aggressor I had on it for rowdier trails. The cornering traction was still on point too for such a shallow tread. Love this tire for a racing application!

I really don't get why people get so bothered at dc when you still hear all mountain every now and then and it seemed to only describe 160 trail bikes. It's more a bother hearing people unleash a tirade every moment they get about "its just marketing jumble to sell you more stuff its not a real word!!" than the description itself 🙄

For Macky's 19m uphill and given Maxxis's claim of one minute saved over 90 minutes of racing, you could expect 60s * 19/90 savings, or 12.67s. You got 13s. I think you nailed it! Syd's at 6s for 15m of riding is a bit low for their claims but still better. So, I'm thinking that the compound probably helps as Maxxis claims.

Is it fair that Macky was able to draft behind a sprinting dog on one of the runs? Or that a herd of deer thought it would be funny if they distracted Syd during a climb? 😜👍 Keep doing what you do 👍‼️

@@sydandmacky sure, keeping the price the same is cool. And to be fair I thought your assessment of these tires seemed fair and transparent. My point to the OP was that marketing hype without substance drives people to buy new products even if they don’t need them and that’s silly. Hey Syd and Macky! I have watched your videos since a while and i'm absolutely blown away how awesome (#bemoreawesome) you two guys already are! I wanted to order a t-shirt with the - eating- wins - races-print - but i live in germany, and shipping to germany is so damn expensive from the US ... not only 20 dollars for the normal shipping already but on top there will be some extra tax from the german government and probably from the post office aswell. I'm really sorry, but I'm too afraid that costs might explode and sadly i haven't got that much money left so I decade to support you guys with only some honest and really good meant words, which I'm doing now. So thanks heaps for these amazing built videos, I especially like the category "Syd fixes bikes" and since i watched them i always make my brake bleeds with the - gravity brake bleed - because as you taught us, this works really amazing! And I also like the way you film the races, always trying to show how it really is to race and even with the lows and sad moments which we all know and have from time to time. And I belive that not trying to show anything else which isn't real is what makes your videos so beautiful. So go on, stay thankful and down to earth, as you are and i whish you lots of amazing hours biking on the trails of this world coming. Your excited fan Johannes from germany

Our reasoning is if they were actually beneficial then pro road tour teams would use them (since they're trying so hard to get every benefit possible, sometimes even illegal ones). So we've never tried them. Lots of people seem to like them though 🤷♂️

I just purchased the new 2.4 aspen max speed, unfortunately they are heavier, 760 grams compared to the previous model which were around 720. Not sure but that probably nullifies the speed improvement. What do you think?
@Cassienope Жыл бұрын
Weight and speed are not clearly linked. If they were everyone would still be running 26 inch narrow tires.
@sydandmacky Жыл бұрын
Also, a little known fact is that there's quite a bit of weight variation tire to tire of the same model in the same compound. For example, the Rekon Races we were using, the old compound, one was 850g and the other was 820. And the new compound, one was 810 and the other was 800. So although the one you got might be heavier, I wouldn't assume that means the new compound is heavier.

@sydandmacky11 ай бұрын
You might be happier on a Rekon on the front instead of the Rekon Race. It's got great traction and still rolls well. Unless you're planning to race XC seriously at which point the Rekon Race would be a better option.

Сan you sort by rolling resistance tires with new MaxxSpeed compound (in sizes 2.35"-2.40", with set to rim internal width about 30mm), i think it will be ASPEN(more faster)=>RECON RACE=>IKON(more slower), thanks
@harcormor Жыл бұрын
Are these both a front and rear tire? Or do they have different variations for front and rear? I currently use a maxis dhf for rear and a maxxis aggressor on the front and am down to try different ones…thinking i might try the rekons
@mrvwbug4423 Жыл бұрын
Rekon Race doesn't have separate front and rear versions. Aggressor/DHF is definitely a weird combo, usually people run them the other way around (DHF Front/Aggressor rear). Based on personal experience, the Rekon and Rekon Race are XC tires, meaning they don't have a ton of cornering knob to work with, but roll real fast. I think a good lightweight combo would be the new Forkaster up front and a Rekon Race out back.

@@mioutdoors426 quality over quantity always. A lot of gym work/strength training (that doesn't show up on Strava) and a lot of threshold/vo2 work. Adding more volume is counterproductive if you don't have time to recover. When we're in the race season, we are mostly racing and recovering/maintaining during the week, so fairly low volume but high intensity. Hoping to get a higher volume week or two in June before BCBR but that will require not racing for a few weeks. Some people respond better to volume, some to intensity, depends a lot on the athlete.

My ride is a fat bike and what I would love to see is tyre compounds like your's on this test that give super good traction on ice.. my experience this winter just passed was my Jumbo Jim's 4.8" on the front (£50) with ZERO traction.. very dangerous even with lowered pressures and I had to walk carefully over sheet ice in a location (canal bank cobble stones) and watching INCREDIBLY ASTONISHINGLY a cyclist pass me on a cyclo cross bike EASILY with pinned to the ground wheels.. got to be racing compounds

Well the good news is, your both extremely fast, the bad news is...your bad at math on or off the bike 🤣. It's 60s * 20s/90s = 13.33, since Sid did it in 15 minutes she would be 60s * 15s/90s = 10s. I also don't get how Sid did the same lap in less time with less wattage? One other thing, I'm actually going to get either the Rekon Race MaxxSpeed, or Aspen MaxxSpeed in the near future. Any reason you prefer the Rekon Race over the Aspen?

Syd is lighter than I am, so technically it is possible, but in this case she ended up doing a different and slightly shorter loop with the goal of us ending around the same time.

@damienbradley9209 Жыл бұрын
@@sydandmacky Thanks, sounds like I'll probably want the Rekon Race then, with maybe a Rekon up front. Years ago I had an Ikon out back and an Ardent Race up front. I didn't like the Ikon because of the vague cornering or climbing traction out back, and didn't like the unpredictable cornering up front of the Ardent Race. So I moved the Ardent Race out back (like it's cornering as a rear), put the old Forekaster up front (like how it's predictable when cornering) and have really enjoyed that setup. But the Ardent Race is worn and I'd like something a little faster rolling, especially up front.
