The second-generation Mazda CX-5 is available at a time when the mainstream SUV market is more diverse than ever. Thankfully, the car has retained (and improved on) its USP of being the SUV of choice for keen drivers. It handles better than ever, but most importantly its comfort and refinement are at another level when compared to the previous model.
Combined with a very punchy and efficient diesel engine, an upmarket interior and plenty of kit, and it's easy to see why this is one of Mazda's best sellers. Granted, the slightly sharper design doesn't really move the game on, and some rivals still beat it for tech and practicality. But as an all-round family SUV that's both comfortable and agile, it's an excellent package, and one that has a certain whiff of BMW about it...

As the owner of a 340i m sport, and a new owner of a 2021 Mazda CX-5, I can confirm the comparisons. I felt right at home in the cx-5 and have been extremely impressed by the ride quality, driving feel, interior luxurious feel, and the tech. It's much more than a BMW copy cat, it's unique in its own way and really is quality in so many areas at a fraction of the European cost.

YES YES YES - I've been saying that for years - My first car was a E36 BMW and my last 2 have been Mazdas - They are the Japanese BMW, Mazda has been occupying the space BMW had in the late 70s, 80s, and early 90's . Just like BMW, they are on and have been on a upward trajectory! Its also very easy to make the comparison when there are public documents where managing directors at Mazda said they have been using BMW for a benchmark for the last 15+ years or so until 2018.

I've had my 2021 CX-5 for just over a year (2.0 petrol) and it is a great car and pretty much feel the same as this review (inc. the fuel flap which took a while to remember :D ). You really do have to give the car full beans to get anything out of the NA engine, but that's fine imo. It's very smooth getting there, great to drive, loads of tech, banging stereo, big boot. I drove about 8 SUVs and liked the Mazda the most, it ticked all the boxes for build quality, driving, tech, and of course price. The next one being straight 6 (or maybe even EV!) with rear wheel drive should be even better.

In North America, and some other areas like Australia, you can get a CX-5 with a turbo Skyactiv-G engine with AWD and a 6AT. It makes 227hp (regular fuel) which bumps up to 256hp (premium fuel). That engine is also used in the CX-9, CX-50, CX-30, 3 and 6 sold in the US/Canada.

Over here on the Yank side of the Pond, I picked up a fully loaded CX-5 with the 2.5L turbo gasoline (250 hp, 300 lb/ft torque or so) engine and all wheel drive for around $25,000 less than an equivalently equipped BMW X3 or Audi Q5. It’s an absolutely gorgeous crossover that punches way above its price tag.

I'd take the Mazda every time. Only difference is the high performance stuff. All cars perform well enough these days. And you could probably buy a shiny new Mazda for the cost of replacing a gearbox or something on some flash BMW. I think I'd still gather get a high end Lexus or something for a high performance car anyhow. They seem to really care about them. Having said that. I am not in the market for one. Mazda CX9 is all the car I need.

usual great and fun review Nicola -- we had a 2018 CX-5 Sport Nav, and looked good in Machine Grey (best colour). We had the Stone Leather interior too, and Mazda know how to do good looking/comfortable interiors -- HUD, powered boot and Bose audio included was good value & std, but what let it down was the gutless 165PS non-turbo petrol engine (Skyactiv-X engine might be a better idea). After 18 months on Scottish highlands, had to trade it in, Smart cars & Mini's were overtaking better on the uphill overtake lanes. If your looking for AWD, it's only available in top tier diesel engine model oddly. Sadly I think the next round of EU emissions limits, will start limiting what cars we see in UK/EU.

This can do 80% of what a base X3 can on the road (we get the 2.5T CX-5 here in NA). And it will work after 12 months of driving the same way it did on day one. Hence unlimited CDN mileage warranty. No other manufacturer offers the latter here.

We just bought ours a month ago. At the price point, it’s truly a nicer car in many ways than the competition, quieter, better base interior than any of the others and just plain cool. I own a 2023 Mazda Cx-5 with the non turbo engine. It is a great car, quality of materials is high and this is pretty accurate. After 3 months here what we found out. The paint leaves something to be desired. It chips very easily and you will need a lot of touch up paint for the nicks that come on all the time. We have three so far (one above the driver side rear wheel, two on the hood). We also find the trunk (the boot) is too small for a family of four with four carry on bags. The fourth bag has to go in the back seat with the kids. So the trunk is a little too small as well. Besides those two things, the car is great and we expect with this decade old design it will last 200,000 miles fairly easily.

Mazda cars are great, but they have a problem. Their steering wheel is hard to turn, which makes them less popular than they could be. I own a Mazda 3, and I've tried other Mazda cars, and they all have this issue. The steering wheel is harder to move in Mazda cars compared to other brands. This makes parking and driving in the city more challenging. When you're trying to park in a tight spot, the stiff steering wheel can be frustrating. It's not as easy to maneuver as it should be...

Had both variants from new; petrol and diesel - my latest one is 4 months old 2.5l. The petrol I have now, top spec - Takumi with leather etc. I get them as company cars through my job so can't hate too much. The petrol engine violently screams when pushed and is very unnecessary -almost embarrassing when trying hard. The diesel is nicer for mid-pull torque when overtaking and a better engine, weirdly. Infotainment systems are a bit dated too - even the new variants. They're both gutless engines in truth, which is a shame, because of the weight of the cars, and gearing. Handle really well, and smooth. A nice family car - yes - but if you want some acceleration and less road noise at speed then go for something else. They do look smart and really well put together inside. Heated and cooled seats which is great! The American version comes with a turbo on the petrol, and a lot more torque. This, I'm sure, would be a much nicer experience, and it is a shame that it is not offered in the UK and Europe. I don't agree with the review here, especially when compared to more premium brands. It's good if you can't afford top dollar but the engines are a bit of a let down when wanting some punch.

I had for 3 years (50k km) 2019 model with 2.0 petrol engine. In city - more than enough, but when you go outside and you need to overtake - just dont do that :D And now I bought 2022 model with 2.5 FWD, damn its perfect in city and out. Obviously its non turbo engine - thats why you need to rev it (over 3k rpm) when you need power, but compare to 2.0, going 150-180kmh was huge challange, but with 2.5 its no problem, you dont have to strangle engine that much and its wayyy less noisy than 2.0. I was outside and asked my friend to drive my mazda and push gas fully from start and I was suprised, the sound was nice, its not like vw, kia and etc with small engines like 1.4 or 1.6.

I drive a 2018 CX-5 and really do like it... Except for the truly dire infotainment system which takes up to 2 mins to load to the point where it will resume playing music from my Music collection on USB [Note that you can't access playlists to change what's playing for another 3-4 minutes!]. I've upgraded it to Android Auto (it doesn't have it as standard), and that's even slower to load although once running it is very good. I'm hoping that this new model is better as I'd like to upgrade to it in within a couple of years, but won't do so if the infotainment is still as bad.

@Kris Martin. Not true. Interior quality in the latest VW and Audi products like the Golf and A3 have gone downhill. Even the Euro biased press have picked up on this. A product of cost cutting following diesel gate. Likewise MB interiors these days are very plasticky and nothing like the quality they used to be. Not sure what your basing your comment on interior quality on.

You are pushing it Nicola saying this will be a bmw...quality and engines are not there (can bet even new ones will not be). Not to mention driving feel. Only thing they do better are manual gear feel and price. The end.

Great video Nicola, love your reviews. I had a 2014 Mazda 6 and sadly it was the worst reliability car I’ve ever had, the doors were “tinny” and the paint scratched easily. Not as well built as BMW (which I’ve had a few). Shame as it was a gorgeous looking car and good to drive. Rubbish to own though, 10k miles and I was always in for service! (12.5k service intervals but car kept alarming out), broken fan belt, blown turbo (60k miles), failed brakes callipers x2! Oil issues hence early services all the time. Shame

I looked at a CX5 and the dealership said they actively dissuade their customers from buy a diesel because there were so many problems with it. We had three petrol Mazdas in the past and they were fab. In 2022, Mazda need an EV SUV option….thats why I don’t have one now!

The current petrol engines are hopeless, thirsty and with pathetic torque. 6-cylinder RWD was announced over a year a go (actually it was an off-hand comment referring to all large Mazdas) but we haven't had any specifics since. Not sure it's going to happen, maybe they were just referring to the CX-50...

If you are searching for performance dont look at mazdas engines. The 3.3 Liter diesel will get 245 hp, thats pathetic and will kot score in the premium segment. Sure a good and smooth engine but hp in the compact segment. Bmw has an x3 m40d with 340hp, thats premium. Ok pricewise on an whole other level.

Nah, don't believe it. The interior is visibly lower quality, probably only comes in black and most important of all, doesn't offer the incredible engines BMW offers. They definitely won't be able to rival BMW's performance.

Mazda cx5 for 2022 does not have wireless Apple CarPlay. You have to plug your lightning cable to car USB causing wear to your plug on your phone. Ever time you get into your car you have to plug in. So much for the advantage of having wireless charging. You still have to plug in. 2021 had wireless CarPlay but they had problems do they removed it in 2022. Instead of fixing the problem they went backwards and removed. Come on Mazda get with technology. This is disappointing. Please come up with a fix and do an update to the 2022’s so there is wireless CarPlay.

Unfortunately the reliability of Mazda isn't the best.. So the only reason to move over from BMW isn't there.. Next BMW interiors still look much better than any Mazda ever has or will.. The little display on the Mazda and then compare with the latest BMW.. The driver experience is not there on a Mazda.. Mazda is in contest with the Nissan Quasqai not any BMW.. Those wanting a BMW won't be going to the Mazda showroom to compare..

I have owned a CX5 for the last 18 months. Fantastic car and I love driving it. Bit thirsty on fuel, get around 36 MPG around town, but on a run I can get 40+. However I have ordered the new CX60 PHEV. Dealer rang today, and told me I can expect delivery around the end of this month. Mazda claim a range of 39 miles purely on electric, and 188 MPG! Be interesting to see the reality. Salesman also told me that Mazda have halted CX5 production to concentrate on the 60, so potential buyers will have quite a wait I would imagine.
