I have the new Australian version which has a spare tyre in the boot and a 2.5L turbo engine. It is a lovely car to drive and after a month of ownership I have no complaints. The interior is very quiet and has a luxury feel. We tried several other competitors (Honda CRV, Toyota RAV 4 Hybrid, Skoda Kamiq and Karoq, Hyundai Kona, Peugot 308). The Karoq was closest for me, but the Mazda was better value we felt.

I really like the look of the CX5 and Mazda interiors are the best of any Japanese brand save Lexus, but as you say it looks a bit big and ponderous without the flexibility of a turbo. But it'll be safe and reliable. Great review.

4:28 The digital fuel gauge gives you the estimated range with the remaining fuel in the tank. What I miss from my Mazda3 is the average speed... The CX-5 seems to be suffering from the same thing. Otherwise it does look more like a facelift than a new generation. Thank you for the review!

I drive Mazda 6 2016 2.5 with auto transmission and I really don't think the transmission is slow. Slower - yes, but I have driven quite a few VAG's with DSG's and while they are very quick at shifting, I definitely had a few wtf moments when it got confused which gear I want. Mazda is more consistent in being slightly slower. It might be like 33% slower, but I don't think it's a deal breaker.

Hi, I'm in the USA, just bought a 2022 CX-5 in the glorious red. I've been driving manual transmission Mazda sedans since 1988, this is my first automatic transmission and my first SUV. I love the car! I was a bit disappointed that now only all-wheel-drive is available, though they claim that the sacrifice in mileage is minimal. Also only automatic transmissions are available here in California.

Great review thank you. I just want to point a couple of details, the cargo cover does fit under the floor right close to the bumper, you have to take off the two floor triangles on each side. The car can be locked from the exterior trunk (hatch), there is a button hidden right of the license plate up underneath the overhang. I have the top of the line 2.0L 165hp and love it!
@MarekDrivesENG2 жыл бұрын
In the "old" one you could probably do that. Here if you look at 2:04 there are no triangles, but permanent plastic sidewalls. It may have something to do with the Newground trim with "active" boot features.

I wonder if Mazda deliberately chose to avoid turbos to distinguish themselves from their old Ford stablemate? Do you want a 1-litre turbo Ford or a macho 1.5-litre Mazda? Likewise but slightly upscale for 1.5T vs 2-litre NA and 2.0T vs 2.5NA. Avoiding turbos may make them simpler, but then Mazda have their Skyactiv voodoo to add back complication, so why not go the whole hog and put them together? Also turbos deliver better torque characteristics.
@planiolro2 жыл бұрын
I also like engines with higher displacement.....however nowadays in European Union the taxes you have to pay for a 2.5 engine are substantial and I am afraid that on the medium and long term will be even higher as the EVs, PHEVs, HEVs will further develop and become more affordable. From my point of view buying a Mazda with a automatic gear is a NO GO since Mazda have the best manual gear boxes .......although unfortunately in these days the trend is to build cars with automatic gear box only............
@SokemRokemRobot2 жыл бұрын
The only real negative I can see with the 2022 CX-5, are the 'flower' designed wheels (6:27). What were the engineers thinking? If guys see that, like I did, they won't want their CX-5 to have those wheels, imo. Fortunately, there's another choice (7:05).

@MarekDrivesENG2 жыл бұрын
Emissions. They'd have to put a turbo in their 1.5L, and with their sales in Europe development doesn't make financial sense. Claims Mazda. I think they overspent on tweaking the existing engines hoping they can somehow get around the emissions regulations (maybe buying themselves time with the MX-30), but it's not working.

Your diagonal test favors rwd cars. I.e rwd based awd systems (or a pure rwd car) will always ace the test, without giving accurate awd performance.
@MarekDrivesENG2 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. My MINI Countryman did it no problem. So did the KIA Sportage. It really depends on how the system programmed. Some are just designed more towards on-road performance.
@natoftw2 жыл бұрын
@@MarekDrivesENG What I mean is, if the rwd system is crap, but it is rwd based, it will overcome the test. Obviously good fwd based awd systems will do good, but bad fwd-awd systems will fail, which won't be the case for bad rwd-awd systems (bad for offroading)
