Well informed, and logical -- you've just become another nutrition resource for me. One point on fiber however -- it seems the most recent information suggest that it is not as crucial to good health as once thought. That is, we have (re-)discovered that it is other things such as good gut flora, and nutrition that supports this is the key, and that the benefit of fiber has been over-played, or perhaps can be detrimental to good health for some folks. This may not be surprising to those familiar with the traditional Inuit diet studies done by Weston A. Price, and others.

Fantastic objective explanation, I would make one small correction though, smoking meat is in general not a high temperature cooking method, I keep my smoker around 200 degrees which is not nearly as hot as what would be used in a skillet or oven. Excess heat over 12-16 hours would turn the meat into jerky, all experienced smokers know slow and steady is the name of the game. Wild ham slow smoked over hickory is the best thing you will ever eat.

The farmer's market near me has an Asian population that sells bunches of non-organic veggies for dirt cheap, but I'm afraid to eat it because it's almost too cheap I'm concerned of the means they used to grow it.

People can live well and be healthy on a wide variety of diets, as long as they get some high quality animal protein (B12) and fats(Omega 3; NO hydrogenated oil). Dairy and eggs will work. Just stay away from sugar and processed food. Also try to find meat/eggs/dairy from pastured animals from small farmers. Organic, seasonal/local fruits/vegetables are also preferred. However, I don't agree that eating lots of animal food is unhealthy. Eskimos and Maasai were very healthy before they were exposed to western foods.

What's hard to separate, it's the fact that meat is obtained from horrible cruelty, suffering and death to animals. If some people like the Seven Day Adventists who are plant based live the longest in the US, then we should be inspired by then.
@KingArtexerxes Жыл бұрын
Not all Seventh-Day Adventists are vegan or vegetarian. A few are. Most converted to Adventists mid life with diets already established. I am an omnivore Adventist. Loma Linda Adventists were included in the blue zone area as long lived. Why just Loma Linda? Because of their lifestyle, and they were multigenerational Adventists. It is a wealthier area where they can afford a better diet and a healthy lifestyle. Organic is important and they have a longer growing season for organic products. Whereas where I live, everything gets to any garden I have so nothing grows. Also many of the blue zones are meat eaters, so you can’t claim it just a vegan diet. I’ve also read evidence that a vegan diet lowers fertility rates.

MrBrucelee117 different animals for different purposes. We use animals based on how we value animals.
@cjb13736 жыл бұрын
Sheldon K but the ethical arguments aren't even good. They are usually loaded with fallacies. Example: we should stop killing and eating animals because they can feel pain. But pain is just a stimulus in all living things that tells them that something in their system is wrong. Killing plants elicits some sort of pain that only plants can interpret, this is how the plant system is able to read the pain and fix the problem so they can continue living. Everything that lives has an inherent drive to live otherwise they would be dead. Also, other animals kill each other all the time. We are also animals, so why is it wrong when we do it?
@claramashaw26066 жыл бұрын
CJ B because a lot of the animals are put through horrid conditions. And plants don’t have brains, I don’t see how you can even think that - plants feel pain too - is a valid argument. Putting all the evidence together I conclude: Meat is both good and bad for you. Doesn't that make the most sense!? Anything can be toxic in excess. Meat might increase your relative risk of certain cancers on the one hand; but on the other-hand it may increase your muscle repair etc. It's all about balance and listening to your body...
@tamarlk7 жыл бұрын
There are literally no nutrients found in meat that can't be obtained through a healthy whole foods, plant-based diet. There is no need to kill animals anymore in order to eat their muscle fibers or fat.
@theonlygriffin7 жыл бұрын
Retinol, B12, DHA, EPA, choline, taurine and even cholesterol just to name a few. Sure we can convert some but not effectively. Were you raised from birth vegan? Were your parents? Can you name any vegan hunter gatherers? This is a new age experiment. I agree that a plant strong diet is the best for health and longevity but I do not think you can thrive without some animal products...

Some people say meat is not sustainable, some say vegetarian/Vegan is not sustainable because excess farming is impeding upon wildlife's stomping grounds and same could be said about meat (animals are treated badly by cramming them into tight spaces and feeding them chemically based grain feed. - grains have to be grown.) We have alot people on the planet that has to be fed. Sounds hopeless.

It's true that what most people eat meat today is actually not grass fed cattle but industrialized genetically grown up cattle which is bad for our hormones that's why most doctors and health experts recommend vegetarian diet or pure grass fed meat arrangements.
@rogerstacey49426 жыл бұрын
I'm opposed to meat eating because of the extreme cruelty often caused by its production. Grass fed meat on a large scale is not feasible because of The increasing demand for meat. It's a matter of fact that a well informed vegan diet is very conducive to health and long life. But of equal importance to me it doesent result pain and misery to billions of animals.

More than 60% of people are allergic to at least one component of dairy. Pasteurized dairy has all the enzymes that aid digestion killed off and unpasteurized has to potential to have some pretty nasty bugs in it (thankfully with a well managed herd this is quite rare). The casein is basically a glue that gunks up various systems.... it is very high in fat (it is after all meant to grow a baby cow very quickly), yet we humans have no problem with consuming every day. As for the horrendous and unnatural management of cows and their calves in order to produce extra food for us.... best to just stay away from it - besides possibly as a very rare treat.

Great video but key points to note, it is physically impossible for the entire population to switch from factory farm meat to grass fed meat. We would need about two more earths. Furthermore even the american heart association (who's sponsored by some meat produces/uses) recommend to eliminate saturated fat. He fails to talk about the endotoxins in meat which can cause hypertension/increased C.A.D and cancer. What to make from this video is what we says at the end: fill your plate with 75% plant foods and use meat as a condiment but i would like to add if at all.

What about Harvard's "The Nurses' Health Study", in which Harvard researchers followed over 200.000 individuals, and Harvard's "The Professional's Follow-up Study", in which Harvard researchers followed over 50.000 individuals, both published in 2012? Their studies found that an increased risk of animal product consumption was significantly associated with an increased risk of dying from cancer, dying from heart disease and an overall shortened lifespan. They reached this conclusion even after factoring in age, weight, alcohol consumption, exercise, smoking, family history and caloric intake: thus COMPLETELY removing the healthy user effect. These findings suggest there are harmful compounds in the meat, dairy and egg products themselves.
@Jimvesterstallone7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but did they factor in *quality/kind* of meat? No. From what I read they did not. There is no question that GMO/pesticide/synthetic hormone/drug-contaminated meat, when consumed, is detrimental to your health, as is taking that artificially produced meat and then processing it with chlorine, nitrates, etc. (which HAS been shown to cause cancer). Organic, naturally raised animals are...well...another animal.

Meat, specifically red meat, processed or unprocessed (beef and pork) is not good. (Ok once a week of every 2 weeks)...bacon, pastrami, salami, pepperoni, hot dogs...all that crap...buffalo meat (bison) is definitely better, but still limit the amount. Sugar and trans fats too.

I think the ill effects of meat has less to do with whether or not you eat it and more to do with whether or not you exercise. Eating meat in moderation with a healthy dose of exercise to balance the calories and the fat content is the smartest thing if you are an omnivore. I am not a nutritionist and I don't claim to be an expert in the field of nutrition, but I believe that the reason why Native Americans used to be so healthy wasn't just that they ate a balanced diet of meat and vegetables, but also that they were very active and didn't live sedentary lives like a lot of us do today.

we should eat natural food. we only started eating this many plants fairly recently. all plants you know from the supermarket dont exist in nature and their wild ancestors are inedible or just impossible to sustain on (seasonal, lower calorie, lower sugar, bitter, sour, and so on). what we know though is that we can eat wild meats today and they are even tastier than our modern breeds. thos should tell us everything we need to know. honestly. another aspect is that every single animal eats its food raw. so the same should apply to humans. keep in mind that most plants are not even edible in raw form. meat on the other hand is edible in raw form. heck there are even tons of recipies till this day that are made with raw animal products

The reason diets rich in meat can improve your condition, at least temporarily, is only because the diet low in carbohydrates. This doesn't mean carbs are bad, but this is because in the absence of carbs, your body thinks your starving, so it breaks down any fat into fatty acids and uses them as an energy source until you are starving no more, and it can consume carbohydrates. The fact that our bodies prefer to use carbs as an energy source should speak volumes. Saturated fat, with the presence of carbohydrates, even if they are carbs from fruits, is very unhealthy and clearly increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Obviously, if these carbs are processed, then the situation is even worse, with the meat increasing your risk and heart disease and the processed carbs damaging you as well. A ketogenic (high fat low carb) diet should not be maintained for long as the data on it is deficient with some studies showing it to be very dangerous long term, and others drawing no conclusion. You can't just count on it being okay long term. For short term recovery, ketogenic diets, plant-based or not, are fantastic. It's better to eat meat once or maximum twice a week, and eat lots of veggies and fruits. All studies show that legumes are also super-healthy, along with potatoes, so there's no reason to avoid these. Grains are a slippery-slope, it really depends on how you react to them. At this point, your left with an ethical choice: if you're eating properly, then this meat youre eating twice or once a week can be simply dropped out, with no real effect on your health. I think this sums up what you can draw from research about meat, and why you'd want to reduce it or drop it completely.

Healthy user affect - not meat eaters vs vegans - watch the video if you still think meat is unhealthy and not essential. Vegans in this comment section are swearing by tests that do not prove meat to be harmful with VALIDITY. It's a misleading correlation - it's not the meat causing disease ! Sugar, tobacco, hormones, pesticides, toxic chemicals. This dr is honest and well read on this issue. Dairy is unhealthy and meat is perfectly healthy if produced entirely organically. Not to mention all the professional athletes with disclosed diets containing well rounded and high amounts of - organic meats including steak chicken pork lamb fish - not eating meat is saying goodbye to humans recorded diet extending 1.5 million years ago all of the sudden and you think there isn't side affects like brain inflammation? Watch the video and listen !

the only reason that your cholesterol count drops on a low carb diet, is because your body needs to use it for energy, but it is way less efficient, so you need lots more of it and so your cholesterol count wil drop fast.

It is clear to see you have not done your homework, Mark. Such a shame. You have some many good principles about you, with your Functional Medicine ideologies and holistic approach to health. However, to advocate meat as a health food is simply irresponsible. Many people will trust your opinion, and it is sad to see this. I just hope people have the foresight to do their own research into the detrimental effect of meat consumption to health. Unsubbed for now.

This video does not make sense at all. So if you can afford organic, grass fed meat, it’s okay to it if it is not BBQ or burnt, or over eaten. But rather we should eat it as a condiment, our health should be okay.

Go off grid- grow your own greens, raise your own animals, exercise everyday, get plenty of water without fluoride, use organic herbs/medicine, when applicable, go organic wherever and whenever possible, etc look up more on these subjects. Cannabis and hot peppers are some of the healthiest veggies you can get. Chicken and turkey meat are the best meats you can eat. Obviously fresh water is what all of us humans drink, so have the know how to make Clean purified water whether it’s a bushcraft way or not, having your own farm will give you a good workout; but if you don’t have a farm for whatever reason you’re going to be wanting to workout; my personal preference for working out is to build strength and endurance, not getting jacked and looking good. So look up whatever suits your body type whether you’re pencil thin, a fat fuck, or anywhere in the middle; I don’t know what you’re like so if possible have anyone that knows about exercise that you know help you through getting into good shape.
