While online certification programs can be valuable, it's important to remember that simply earning a certification may not guarantee your dream job. It's essential to combine certification with practical experience and networking to enhance your job prospects.

You have to go to a credible institution and get your certification from there first. Once you do that, then you can move on to taking more certifications to strengthen your skills online, in that order.

My wife spent a year studying then passed the test in January. She has send about 200 applications and had two interviews. Both of them said they don’t hire apprentices. And she has twenty years in Physical Therapy to go with her certification. Almost two years of her life down the drain on the useless “career.”

I studied medical coding in college for 2 years. Spent hours upon hours looking for a job, gave up and lost my certification. I could not afford the certification fees and continuing education credits without a job.

I looked on your page and maybe i missed it but do you cover ICD 10 PCS? I have to do that for my course and I HATE it. I dont get it at all. ICd 10 CM makes sense but the PCs is awful and Im not following with my unhelpful course instruction. Or has anyone found anything helpful? I am in tears trying to figure this out.

@@jackiemccoy436 what are you struggling with? Most of Victoria's credentials are outpatient/pro fee focused and I don't see her discuss much about PCS. You don't need PCS unless you are an Inpatient coder or taking Inpatient credentials/certification exams (like the CCS or CIC). And most inpatient jobs usually prefer credentials from AHIMA (RHIA, RHIT, CCS) and rarely hire new coders for Inpatient coding. Most coding jobs out there are outpatient/pro fee. AAPC does have Inpatient credentials but in my opinion they are more a resource for Outpatient/Pro fee.

@@caleblo77 im doing an online course, to get a job as a coder in any part of my hospital, even the clinics, you dont have to have experience but you have to have a certification. so i signed up for a course and its mostly ICD 10 CM and coming up is CPT codes, but right now im in a whole section of PCS and the course is not great on providing help in my opinion. Im struggling to find much on youtube, it seems to me to be like, the opposite of ICD 10 CM. Im really starting to get those codes but the PCS seems to be opposite? I guess of CM. I just need to know enough to pass I guess but Im def on the struggle bus.
@caleblo772 ай бұрын
@@jackiemccoy436 thankfully, PCS is only going to be used in the Inpatient setting and most coders and jobs out there won't need it. To pass the course, I would look at AHIMA resources if there are any that would help. CMS' MLN has a free course in PCS training (www.cms.gov/Outreach-and-Education/MLN/WBT/MLN4151758-ICD-10-PCS/ICD10PCS/index.html) that might help. I learned PCS in school and on the job coding Inpatient charts. You'll need to understand the root operations and terminology (example just because a physician says "excision" you have to make sure you are using the PCS term for what the documentation supports). PCS is complex because there are so many options, but once you have a grasp on root operations the rest is really just reading the document (or prompt) to find the remaining digits of the code. Good luck!

@@Iam_Celene all coders require certification and going through a college program will provide you the tools and voucher to go take the certification exam.

Exactly. Employers are looking for AAPC or AHIMA certifications -- the exact training doesn't always matter but may look slightly better if it's from a more reputable organization. Employers tend to not have a difference in pay for college degree vs not.

When AI becomes the future trend, medical coding may not be a good career consideration. There are many hospitals already try to use "Epic" to code the ancillary cases. A lot of ancillary coders got laid off. I believed ED coders will be the next target. When AI becomes fully developed, the hospitals won't need that many coders to code the charts. They probably just need 3 to 4 people to review the clinical criteria.
@ContempoCodingАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing your concerns. t's understandable to worry about AI in the medical coding field, but it's worth considering that any job involving computers could hypothetically be affected by AI. However, it's important to remember that AI, like Maverick AI, is designed to assist and enhance the work of medical coders, not replace them. The technology helps automate certain aspects of the coding process, reducing the burden of repetitive tasks and allowing coders to focus on more complex cases that require human expertise and judgement. Moreover, the introduction of AI in the field opens up new opportunities for coders to upskill and work in areas like AI supervision, quality control, and more. So, rather than viewing AI as a threat, we can see it as a tool that can make our work more efficient and rewarding. Hope this helps alleviate some of your concerns! 😊
