Okay I quite possibly may be nuts, at times I would agree. But I have decided to become a medical coder. I've started attending an online class from AAPC. I have found this course cross eyed difficult and at times screaming "what?" The weird part is I like it! I work 8 hrs a night, have just moved into a new house that I share with 2 cats and a special needs dog. The part that most find the real surprising part, I'm over 70 years of age. This stuff makes me fell young by challenging me. Wish me luck cause I'm going to try and pass the test by the end of the year. 2020 has stolen so much from so many but I'm going to make it a positive year for me!

To be fair I believe you give a very realistic view of this career. Those saying you sound negative seem to be romanticizing the idea of just becoming a medical coder and not having a realistic view. So when you come at them with "this is how its gonna be" you're kinda bringing them back down to earth and outta their heads which some types of people really don't like. You come off as very intelligent and informative. Thank you for the information. Now I know this isn't the job for me, which I'm happy to know before I drop the money on the schooling. Also your hair is gorgeous I'm a little jealous to be honest. 😁

Thank you so, so much for your comment! There are a LOT of places out there that like to post photos of people sitting on the beach with computers and convince people they can just sign up for their training program and that will be them! I certainly don't want to deter anyone from getting in this career because it is super interesting and can be very lucrative, but there are a LOT of certified coders that were lured in, paid a ton of cash, and are extremely frustrated that they can't find a job. It's heartbreaking!

Actually, if you describe most jobs procedures, they sound harder than they really are. Like most computer jobs, you'll be required to sit in front of a computer most of the day. You'll be required to make or received some phone calls and respond to emails and also attend meetings. Most jobs send email updates on procedures. So even though she listed a lot of things, it's mostly standard computer stuff. A great example would be to list everything a secretary does and her responsibilities and you'll assume they make 100k but they make way less. Lastly, once you learn to code and get the hang of it, it's very robotic and monotonous job. After a few years of experience, making 60k for a 9 - 5 isn't bad especially if your gig is working from home. Only because you save a lot of money WFH due to not having to go to the office, gas, food, clothes, etc. Don't be overwhelmed by her list of requirements and procedures. If you look at most jobs online, the requirements for the simplest jobs is long and sounds overwelming etc. Good luck, all! 👍

I'm in my 6th year as an MLT. This job is so stressful. It's similarly to coding in that we do a lot of investigative work and have to be accurate. We also have to deal with ethical dilemmas like nurses wanting us to run bad specimens. But we are always short staffed, you might have a coworker who makes you do all the work, you might be asked to do phlebotomy or cover things you're not trained to do. A lot of repetitive tasks. I like the idea of being at my computer all day and focusing on a few things. In the lab you're being asked to take care of 10 things all at once. There's also a limited career ladder for MLTs and MTs/CLS. I'm leaning more towards this.
@Angeleechie2 жыл бұрын
Geez, nurses wanting to run bad specimens. That's insane. If they couldn't get a good specimen I would get it myself. But that's the phlebotomist in me. If I were you I would put your foot down. A good lab director should back you up. I am sorry you have put that much into MLT and aren't happy. Maybe you should take your talent to another lab?

As a person who is a bit dissatisfied with their current BS in Computer Science and Information Security, I am glad that I went to a webinar for MS for Health Information Management (HIM) which lead me to check out their certificates in medical coding. While I am still on the fence on whether I want to jump into a MS or a certificate program off the back of graduating by Fall of 2022, a certificate in Medical Coding seems to be more promising as I watch videos trying to understand the day to day expectations. It isn't much different from my standard coding classes (minus the fact that I haven't coded in C++ for about 2 years and all they use is Python to explain stuff that still doesn't make sense), but it none the less it seems to weigh it's positives from my general degree that I was originally going for. Thanks for uploading this video, I will very much be watching more of them as well as speaking to people from my college as to what would be best for me, in my own best interest :)

Next term starts next week and I FINALLY get to start learning the codes and so forth. Im really excited!! However, I am consistantly seeing how hard it is to get started in this business - why is that?! Why is no one willing to invest in a new coder who will likely stay with the organization who gave them a chance and trained them? I fail to understand this part of it, honestly.

Sadly, no I'm not working in the industry. The best job I could get without certification was a front desk worker. The certifications are incredibly expensive, with no room for testing failure, and no refunds, either. Plus, all the larger medical facilities in my area all have the doctors using coding software themselves, rather than hiring a coder. It ended up being a dead-end, and now I have a bunch of student loans to contend with, as well. It ended up being a horrible mistake.

Thank you for this informational video! I am on the verge of applying to a trade school for Medical Administration and Coding for the 2024-25 year and this video is further solidifying that I have the potential to pursue this career path well. I’ve worked a couple of years now as a home care aid, doing nursing type duties, and I’ve found it to not be as mentally challenging/stimulating as I’d hoped it’d be. I approach problems analytically and comprehensive work has always been up my alley for that reason. This career path seems challenging, but not impossible by any means (although I’m sure I’ll feel like it is while learning the language lol). I am looking forward to beginning class next year and I’m praying I’m making the right decision for my future! 🙏

No offense, I'm truly only saying this as constructive criticism. This video sounded like it was trying to SCARE someone or steer them AWAY from medical coding. I even saw a girl in the comment section say, "Daggg I'm Scared now" lol kinda how I felt after watching, like neeever mind. Maybe if you gave the same realistic information, but with a positive spin like, "but if you really buckle down, I know you can get through it like I did." Or, "Even though it's hard, you will be able to figure these things out and remember these things by doing ... (example) like I did." Hope this helps. Blessings
@SatisfyGamerGirl Жыл бұрын
That was the whole point of the this video. She was talking about the more difficult or strenuous parts of the job. If those “scared” you then the video rightfully did it’s job in suggesting that coding isn’t a good fit for you. I found the video extremely helpful with giving a realistic expectation of the harder aspects of the job/career in coding.
@IkambaDeVictoire Жыл бұрын
@@SatisfyGamerGirl @RykerL well, how I see it, everyone has a right to their own perspective and opinion, and I was simply stating mine. I get where you were coming from as well. I guess it can be looked at either way. I actually have a job as a coder/medical analyst now, been here for about 2 years. Funny thing is I see this comment is 2 years old ... so this video didn't scare me away. One can look at the challenges of life and either say "I'm ready for this and willing to grow in this" or say, "Naw, this is NOT for me right now." Both very valid, as long as you're being honest with yourself. Glad I chose growth, I've learned so much in my current role (and I don't even have a coding certification ... yet, who knows what the Lord has for me in my future). 😊

Considering my previous job experience as a correctional officer sergeant (working office side of it), I feel MBC is nearly like what I used to do for my other supervisors. I used to type bunches of their different paperworks up for them! All I basically did for them is type things for them for 12 hours daily (5 days a week). Sounds like the way you put it, MBC is the job I can truly click with where is way safer than my previous employment (without worrying about dealing with offenders and potential Use of Force with them). Getting your certification is great. I passed the test a while ago. Coders passing the test think they're going to be instantly hired or marketable. The best way I can put it, sometimes it's like having a basic College Degree, does not guarantee you're going to get any job. Allow me to elaborate...After you receive your certification and you go on the interviews, you're still going to be given a coding aptitude test. You're going to say "What? I'm already certified" That is what coders are not ready for. Just because you're certified does not mean you're automatically a match for that specialty. With coding you just need to be on top of everything all of the time.
@amiewalter98603 жыл бұрын
And how difficult is the aptitude test ie. is it like the certification test? Are you working in coding and how long did it take you to get a job? Thanks for the info.
