Interesting. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to Buddhists.

I meditated for some time now and found out that I got into a different approach with my surroundings. not sure if meditation is the cause though, cause everything changes anyhow all the time. but the old patterns of excitement and irritation - don't worry I'm still a case - are more calm and in fact less interesting now. and I can assure the reader: that really makes a difference

A very important topic. I can say that there have been periods in my life where I (mis)used meditation to avoid doing what needed to be done (you could say I let aversion and delusion collude - I fooled myself into thinking I was doing the right thing, while ignoring practical problems in my life). I can also say that at other times (especially during the pandemic as a nurse), that I mistakenly did not prioritize meditation because I felt guilty doing so - and that certainly undermined my ability to best serve others. I certainly wish others have better success understanding their relationship with practice - but it's fair to say that understanding how much and when to practice is a part of the larger path.

What a wonderful topic! For my part, meditating has enabled me to become capable of looking after people with dementia, helping them to have whatever comfort is possible for them. I know that without practice I would not have been able to do that work. Thank you Rinpoche, long life and good health to you and all the Teachers!

Meditation transformed me from a bid ridden mess of a person, to someone who's completely taken control of their emotions. I used to have panic attacks and wake up in the middle of the night sweating. I found Buddhism and meditation and started understanding what was going on in my mind through years of practice. I can't even remember the last time I had a panic attack. I'm not perfect! I still get anxiety, but it's so controllable now, it's a complete non-issue Now it's gone beyond that, and I'm diving into compassion, empathy and just being a better all round human being in my day to day. I truly believe the world needs more awareness of their thoughts and emotions.

Thank you kindly Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche for sharing. Much faith in meditation I have, yet I never have. Physically born during chaotic Việt Nam era (some refer to it as a WAR ie We Are Right). My Father (RIP 180121), as a merchant seaman, albeit of East Europe, always shared unique views on the Far East. Analects of Confucius were frequent much liked topics, however to compare & contrast such to Tao or Hindu, had us thinking deeply... speaking of which ... perhaps legend of Meng Po has my self in discord with ever physically present anxiety, panic, Or not? Once again, (and again), Thank you kindly for sharing! Yes, I believe (always have, always shall), what goes around, comes around . . .

I was literally just wondering this. Thinking of this as something I shouldn't be doing all day even if I am visualizing/manifesting/creating what have you. I got annoyed thinking it was exactly that -evading living your life, when instead I was reminded after a lovely 2 hour meditation that it is a better way of living life. Yet the effort it takes to repeat can at times be daunting. Yet this reminds me more and more, work through the spirit of things. Internal energy. This always results in more complete harmony. Thank you, Rinpoche (precious one

When Ive tried to meditate it never came easily because my mind is always loud and anxious. So the approach of quiet your mind was impossible for me. Now im starting to get back into the process of it all but this time from your teachings especially I now view meditation as a form of awareness, awareness of your breath, feelings, emotions. I recommend the book the power of now by Eckhart Tolle. Much love 💜✨💜

Thank you so much. How to dissolve Ego?
@acslater017
@acslater017 Жыл бұрын
Personally I combine Vipassana and Dzogchen approaches. Vipassana will help you develop mindfulness to observe the minutiae of experience. For some people, developing sufficient mindfulness helps you to see that there is just experience, and that adding a Self or Experiencer (ego) is just an extra layer of mental activity. With enough perspective and spaciousness, one can watch the activity of ego-ing and self-ing come and go. You can directly observe that there is not a permanent life protagonist in the center of your head, there is merely the fact of experience. Once you learn to tune into all types of mental activity, a useful meditation instruction might be to let your mind rest as the common space in which all those things arise - the prior condition to it all (bodily sensations, senses, thoughts, feelings, etc). That is to say, consciousness. And consciousness is inherently free of ego (or at least prior to, and more spacious than, it). These perspectives are essentially enabled by developing sufficient mindfulness. Some criticize this approach as too gradual, when in fact the absence of self can potentially be glimpsed right on the surface of ordinary experience. Dzogchen pointing out instructions are more direct. They tease apart different layers or subroutines of the mind. The ego plans, defends, fixes, etc. so that part of the mind is asked to step back for awhile and we ask ourselves (as an invitation to observe & experience, not a riddle to solve with the intellect): “what is here now, when there are no problems left to solve? Nowhere to go, no one to become, no threats to defend against, etc?” The question “what’s here” is not to observe the contents of consciousness (as you would in Vipassana). More like, “what’s the space that’s revealed here”. What’s it like to be aware from that greater space that is not the small Self? Unhook awareness from thought. At that point, you can direct awareness toward the fact of awareness itself. And your mind will fold inside out like a pair of socks. This approach is more direct, but without sufficient mindfulness developed first, I’m not sure the import and ramifications of the pointing out instructions will really work, as they’re intended as invitations to observe and experience, not intellectualize. You can also see how the ego is intertwined with the process of suffering, as to psychologically suffer is to be lost in thought. To be lost in thought is what creates the experience of Self, calcifying the flow of experience into something we can call I, Me, or Mine. So seeing through the illusion of the self, awakening, and liberation from suffering are deeply intertwined. If you’re a physical type or the mind is an unfriendly place (eg from trauma) seated closed eye meditation might not be the best first step. You might seek some method through body movement, walking meditation, yoga, etc. Or you could take a psychedelic like LSD or Psilocybin and get it out of the way in about 5 hours 😂 Hope that helps.

I don't think meditation is a cop-out, but Buddha was not a mother. I love that meditation is becoming a more common practice and there are many forms of meditation that fit into different lifestyles.

Very educative. I love your videos.

I went to the Vipassana Meditation Center close to Los Angeles for the 10 day retreat once. We were practicing D N Goenka's way of sitting there. I feel like the main difference is that they stress one pointness and mainly focus on body sensation while Mingyur Rinpoche has many methods such as focus on objects or your thoughts. Therefore you can choose the ones that you feel more comfortable to do and switch in between them once you feel tired at doing one type of meditation.

Is meditation a Cop-out? Today, I would like to discuss a very special topic. “ Is meditation a Cop-out?” I am learning this word today. It is a new word for me. But it means “ Is meditation just an excuse to not engage in the world? Or do we just want to run away from things? Or are we just being lazy?” I will tell you a story. I had one student, and she met another meditator. She knew nothing about meditation at the beginning, and her friend said, “I am meditating.” And my student was quite confused “Why are you meditating?” and her friend said “I do not know how to help others. So I want to learn how to help them. That is why I am meditating.” She was more confused. “really?, you just sit on your butt on the cushion for a long time, and that means you are helping others?” I thought this was a really nice story. Many people have this question. Some times, even a meditator feels guilty. “Oh, I am doing nothing. I am sitting very peacefully on this cushion. How can that help the world?” Actually, normally I say again and again that If we transform ourselves then there is a positive contagion or influence that comes from it. Scientists say that, when you are teaching, only 7% of what other people learn comes from words. The other 93% comes from who you are. It is based on the nonverbal. And it not only true for the teachings but with anything we learn. If you go to a new country, from America to Japan, in one weak you will learn a lot. Actually, you already transform something. If you go from Japan to America, in just one week you will learn a lot. You do not have to go to the university and take a class it is just by being there in the society, meeting with the people. Therefore, there are what we call “the view”, “meditation”, and “application”. There 3 are together. The view is your belief, your insight, your perspective. That is the view. Meditation is bringing your insight, your perspective, and your wisdom into your heart, your experience, and into love and compassion. Then the third is that you have to act. I learned meditation when I was young, since I was 9 years old. And now I am very active. I am teaching meditation. And why am I here? I think it is because of my meditation. And why do I meditate? Because of my panic attacks. Without my panic attacks, I would not be here. So through the panic attacks, I learned meditation. Now I am teaching medittation. Although my schedule is very busy, my mind is not tired. Of course, my body tires, and I have to be very careful now. For the buddha it was the same thing. After the Buddha attained enlightenment, he taught his entire life. Even when he was dying, with his last few breaths, he was still giving teachings. And actually, Buddha was really an activist. He really broke the rule of the caste system in India. He made everybody equal. He brought the idea of harmony and peace. All of this was not through violence but in very consistent, very determined ways, full of love and compassion. The power of love and compassion is a 100 times more powerful than the power of fear or fighting. So I think meditation is definitely not a cop-out. But of course, it depends on your personally, right? Anything can be a cop-out. If you do not do it the right way. But the real meditation, the message of all of this, is really important for the world right now. Love and compassion and wisdom are the most powerful phenomena in this world, I think. Thank you.

I don't suffer from any such moral pangs. I meditate only for myself. Everybody else including my family comes later. I meditate for my mental peace and to deal with my mental problems. Everything else is just a side effect. Meditation keeps me sane.

The view is the intellectual understanding of the purpose and benefits of the practice. The meditation is the practice itself, which will help you embody and enhance the benefits in a personal level. The application is extending the reach of the practice beyond yourself (to others), integrating the skillfulness that comes with the practice towards relationships and community.
