As someone who has sunk in about 160 hours into Gates of Hell, well over 800 hours between all three COH games. I am enjoying the game, because of the different styled games that I have played. From realistic to arcade like RTS, it feels right for me. I understand where the core fan base is coming from. As they expected something entirely different. I think for MOW2, you just have to come at it with a different approach.

1:33 Still think they changed the tank damage models. Tanks take alot less damage and almost all of the tanks explode when HP hits 0. Also the claim "Hull HP was always a thing" is strange. In older MoW and GoH, tanks can sometimes take an absurd amount of penetrating shots, without beeing disabled/destroyed. Something about the tanks is off.

Are you talking about realism or competitive setting? The hp thing in other mow games and GOH is true. You can still damage all tank components in mow2. The weird feeling must come from mowas2 where tanks could randomly get one shot because of an RNG system.

IMHO i think the game is more balanced now, you can kill any Tank kinda easy.. i dont like the HP thing... in AS2, as far as i can remember, i never noticed something like HP.. just armor thicknes and penetration. yet its a great game and i love playing it.

I think it's possible they had a sort of abstract hp bar that was hidden, although I did notice that in the new game, tanks seems to die outright a lot more than being repairable like in the other games. I also noticed it seems like AT grenades "lock" to vehicles, whereas soldiers would miss often in the older games.

Simply not true. If you don't hit anything that causes an instant loss, it takes exactly five shots from a P4F2 to destroy a Tiger in GoH. Every time. I uploaded a video showing as much and if you search for HEALTH, HEALTHBARS, THE TRUTH! on google/Steam, you can find a post from the GoH devs themselves explaining they use HP too.

I tried watching a number of KZbin videos about MoW2 but none of them gave me a great sense of what to expect, until I watched this video. So thanks very much @twiglets2, this was the best video I've seen yet on MoW2 and it convinced me to give the game I shot. As someone who owns but barely played the previous games in the MoW series but played many many hours of modded CoH, CoH2 and someone who also rates more or less all WW2 RTS games against the venerable Close Combat series I grew up playing in the late 90s, I have to admit I was struggling to decide whether to try out MoW2 or not. I passed on CoH3 because I felt it looked/felt a lot more "arcadey" than CoH2 or CoH1 but I also really struggled to get into the MoWAS games because it just felt extremely clunky and required so much micromanagement of individual squads which is not really to my taste. Hopefully MoW2 will fill the void that's been missing in my WW2 RTS heart since I stopped playing CoH2 Spearhead Mod years ago. Thanks again @twiglets2!

Do soldiers have an option to automatically pick up ammo for their main gun in a short radius around them? The lack of this was the most infuriating thing in the original. The original was fun for small infiltration-type missions with only a few men, but for any larger scale there was too much micromanagement.

The UI is so confusing. As someone who played MoWAS2 and GoH ostfront, the new dumbed down ui is so confusing. I can’t figure out how to make my soldiers repair a vehicle. There’s no button I can find for it and pressing r doesn’t work. There’s a lot of examples like that.

After watching this and your Assault Squad 2 review, I went with Assault Squad 2. The best edition of AS2 is just $9.50USD on Steam, and as someone who always wanted to try out an RTS in this style but doesn't wanna drop $45 on a kinda iffy entry in the series I think I'll be content with my choice.

Yeah I was so excited when I heard this was coming out then I saw it. It reminded me of COH3 which is sad no real improvements that really shake anything up the graphics are pretty much the same and the only 3 factions was the deal breaker. But the worse part is the the idea of cosmetics its sad to see it failing almost has the same amount of player in MOWAS2.

Great review. I like the excessive amount of single player modes. You don't really see that much these days. I loved assault squad 2. But I never got into gates of hell as much as other people. So it being more of a sidegrade to gates of hell is fine by me.

if you liked AS2 (an AS2 so fan myself) you will enjoy this one. They dropped the ball on a few things (could have updated the UI and made the menu not abysmal), but the game play is solid, and I LOVE being able to comp-stomp with a friend without the game randomly assigning units to eachother. IMPORTANT: for an AS2 veteran, you CAN set the deployment mode back to AS2 style away from the echelon system. also the more familiar AS2 feeling missions are actually in the MP lobby under incursions, just assign bots and make it private.

Honestly to me it doesn't feel like MOW/AS2 at all. If it was at least comparable to AS2 I would at least feel somewhat happy with my purchase. Instead everything feels ten steps backwards and 'off' in a way it can be hard to describe. Infantry feel like pointless cannon fodder compared to older games. Vehicles are overly fast and the armour/penetration system leads a lot to be desired (even on the realism mode people harp on about). The regiment system leads to so many problems and feels like you barely have enough units. Even the 'classic' mode has problems. Repairing your own tank or AT gun? (which somehow hasn't blown up - so many unnecessary ammo explosions too but that's another point) well you better be sure you haven't called in another unit in that time otherwise you are hit with the 'Not enough CP to use allied unit' message....because that's fun. Shooting an enemy with a machine gun on your tank via direct control? Well better be sure they are in range and not on the edge of being out of range otherwise you will immediately stop shooting and receive a message simply saying 'too far'.... like literally what the fck? Who thought this was a good idea? Why not have a damage drop off like every other game in the series? Gates of Hell is simply better in almost every aspect. I wasn't expecting a GoH 2 but I was hoping for a somewhat coherent game that could at least bring some competition between the products but it's just so shallow. Don't get me wrong, there are some things I like. Though the list is very minor. Custom trenches and fortifications are nice but these take a long time to construct to the point where it feels like they don't gel with the fast pace nature of the game. Like I'd just want this expanded trench system in Gates of Hell. It's just awful decision after awful decision to the point where it doesn't feel like Men of War and this is before we even talk about always online and the steep price of the game. I've been playing this series since 2006 and this is just baffling....

how is the performance? one downside i noticed with MOWAS 2 is no matter how good your PC is it can't utilize it maybe due to limitations with the game engine, my usage don't exceed 40% it's like my computer don't even recognize I'm playing a game but that doesn't mean i have a good experience with large battles as the game engine can't fully utilize my hardware I'm getting single digit fps. I hope the new MOW 2 is a different story

The UI being shit seems to be a staple of RTS since 2002. For some reason, Warcraft 3 is the only game so far that gives enough customization options until this day, despite being over 2 decades old and having to fiddle with a shitty text file. But the capabilities were there! I honestly think fixing the UI in RTS would revive the whole genre no cap. The vast majority of people who think RTS are hard is because UI and controls are shit so you never really get to play the game as intended, and it creates the worst experience possible for casual players.

Ive always liked the men of war series, played it since it was called faces of war. i really like the direct controll ability, just command a scquad here and there while you direct controll a soldier you outfitted with a big machine gun. Speaking of outfitting soldiers, is there still a inventory system in the game? like you can go to a dead soldier, pick up their weapon and grenades, and also pick up med kits and repair kits to heal soldiers and repair tanks. Its always been the case in previous games, i wonder if its also still in this game since you did not showed it in this review.

yeah i kinda grown to dislike the men of war series, sadly the last good one was men of war assault squad 2, and then i moved on to gates of hell. which is better than men of war in pretty much every way i know of, better game modes (especially last stand), better missions, higher graphics which keeps you satsified even years after release and playing it just like i am constantly, everytime i play even years later i sometimes just zoom in all the way and admire the battle from a soldier's perspective, if anything gates of hell is the much better option and i suggest everyone buy that instead of men of war 2.

So I know many people want MoW2 to resemble Assault Squad, which is completely valid, but considering the amount of titles (triple a or not) that are absolutely NOT doing the right thing (aka EFT, Battlefield, CoD, Star Citizen), MoW2 is a breath of fresh air. If you expect it to be a certain way, it can often lead to disappointment when you are not the one developing the game. But MoW2 is FUN, and they are giving the power to the people through modding and campaigns and that is worth it to me. I bought it just to figure out if I’d like it, but I played well past the 2 hours steam required for you to get a refund

The biggest problem with this game is how all of it is made out of a recycled failed live service game. Almost all of it's problems can be traced back to that, chief among all and the very first hard dealbreaker, being always online. Then, you get into the game design, which owes many of it's choices due to that, too. 5v5 teams being the default on most gamemodes (filling your team with AI even if you're playing solo) because they wanted to make WW2 League of Legends, tanks trying to be World of Tanks (which honestly is the worst tank game and where the health bars and shot pen indicators came from) and then the choice of "deckbuilding" because back in the live service game they made you grind or pay real money to unlock more units to use. Then, after all that, there is the game _feel_ which is completely ruined. Sure it doesn't feel as "hardcore" as Gates of Hell, but it also feels worse than MOWAS2!! That's what fucks me up. I'm fine with more colors and faster combat, but it still is worse than their own most popular old game. Then there is the UI which is universally considered shit even by people who gave the game good reviews, and the one thing you failed to mention, which I think is still an important thing, is how the balance is absolutely fucked up, with cross-map artillery hitting your spawn from the start of the game. And so many of these things could still be fixed, if they actually listened to the feedback people like me gave them from the betas. There's so many small details that are just bad compared to AS2. Going back to the "Online only" thing, also have to mention: you tell people to wait for mods, but MODS WON'T WORK ON AN ONLINE ONLY GAME. Not when the game isn't running on your own machine. So they ruined the one thing that made their franchise so beloved and long lasting. Until they fix all of those things, I won't be spending money on this game, and honestly I don't think they ever will. It would require making most of the game again from scratch.

I am big fan of these games and i am sad they cant make its way back in to community... back in time we were more SP gamers .. but look 2024! and we have same big maps like in 2000 . . i woud expect them make huge maps with more models detailed cities more destruction and events... look games like RUST open world rendering bases items everything... we game like these cant be super huge maps?.. to enjoy tens of hours of progress.. . make sense look what kind of games you like more? small maps short story or big open maps where you create story?... its what i miss.. anyway if its cheaper i woud buy, but right now i feel hype only, looking if games have hidden progress. . for example will they update new maps? new campains?.. or its just what you buy

lagwise I played 6 game and haven't lagged once even in lobby that I have 200ms. Stutter wise the quality isn't great, I have a 3070 and I experience stutter a few times per game but otherwise I am on 60fps

One thing I personally don't like is that they went with the 2nd world war once again. Sure, it's an interesting setting but I wish they tried something different. After all in the past we had Men of War: Vietnam that I remember fondly. Why not do a Men of War: Vietnam or Korea? Or a proper Cold War gone hot scenario, not that shitty DLC. They could even try their chances in modern setting. I really mean it, I have Men of War, Men of War: Assault Squad 1 and 2, Gates of Hell, Men of War 2 and they're all set in WW2. Despite its flaws, I really like the fresh and modern setting in Call to Arms and really appreciate the devs for experimenting with the franchise. Aside from the setting, another thing that in my opinion makes successors of Men of War underwhelming is how similar they look and (more or less) play. Some would say it's a good that they're all similar, but after 15 years it's reasonable to expect bigger improvements. Graphics in both GOH and MOW2 are just barely better than in MOWAS 2. Dynamic campaign was a nice experiment but it's too simplistic. Devs of both games should base it on Army General from Steel Division 2, where you have tactical (real time) and strategic (turn-based) mode where in the latter you can freely move units around the map, instead of picking one of two of three points to attack, then waiting for defense and repeat.

For some reason, the graphics in MoW2 look worse than the graphics in MoWAS2 to me. MoWAS2 looks grittier, and more realistic, whereas MoW2 is far too cartoony, and their faces look awful.

Actually i have a small gaming channel for the Total War franchise but i want to start a 2nd or 3rd channel covering science fiction, WW2 content so i've been watching your reviews trying too choose games for those channels. You've been a big help so far as i prefer single player games, sadly in 2024 some companies want you to pay for season passes and seem to think they can take back their content even after you've paid for it so choosing games wisely is important.

At 1.35 you made a remark stating that the: tank armor is your hp bar. I have to call you on that. If the type gun has a better penetration then your armor, it will get destroyed. Butttttt If your armor is greater then the penetration of the tank it will never make serious damage to your tank (especially in the older games) resulting in that your crap tanks get blasted away by 75 mm like they are made of paper. But a 37 mm can't touch a king tiger and it only makes funny sounds when the shell hits the tank.

I tried to get into GoH but the AI was so bad and the micro was so fiddly and annoying it ruined any 'magic' the game had. MoW has the exact right level of that stuff while having an AI that's actually fun to deal with. GoH fans are just insanely insecure and having to make up stuff as if somehow MoW is going to make them vanish or whatever.

😂😂😂😂 you know what the problem is is that rts's haven't become Grand strategies. There's no real goal other than spamming units and they do this over and over again and nobody does anything different so you can go back to command and conquer and spam units. Or maybe somebody could make something way better that has a grand strategy included and that you don't have to play. I don't know Nazis. Every time you know you can make a whole technology tree of your own. Do other things. If you're a fan of a certain era, just make a new story😂😂😂😂😂

@@kloon9699 no, men of war 2 is much more arcade, it feels that way atleast with the ai troops already fighting at your side and how the ai rush you with tanks and artillery, also firefights between two squads end two qickly in my opinion, there is no room for the same strategies as before. also the cover system and pathing for the troops is some of the worst i have ever encounterd, they can't even walk down a hills many times my troops has to walk all the way back because of poor design. The fact that medics just spawn on the map and takes wounded soldiers to cover just to despawn is also really annoying, same with the mine layers. the battles don't feel real and tactical they just feel like unites clashing like a total war game. the scale is lost, feels like company of heroes with bigger maps. also the visuals and lack of atmosphere doesn't help

For me the big question is how quickly they will introduce the offline mode. they've made a promise to do that, and I always keep a close eye on how quickly developers keep their promises, to see whether they are worth trusting with their other promises
