Great video Dan. Although of the three countries mentioned the Philippines is the only one I've been to so far, I think the big appeal of Mexico for a lot of us would be how close it is and how cheap to fly or drive to. The one downside I see to Mexico and probably the Dominican Republic (and I'm not sure about this one) vs the Philippines is the Philippines has English as a second language, and to a lot of us that's important if a person plans to stay anyplace for very long.

The problem for Budget Retirees is that there is always going to be inflation no matter where they go in the world. In addition, there are going to be unexpected emergencies which are going to require $$$ and this is something a lot of Budget Retirees don't plan for nor are prepared for.

For a retired couple who want a low cost, relaxing retirement in an English speaking country in Asia, where they want to own a car and drive themselves around, Malaysia has to be #1. In fact, Malaysia is the only other country in SE Asia (besides Singapore & Brunei) where no special driving skills are needed.

Interesting ranking of towns in DR. But why is Puerto Plate 3rd? There is a brand new road to Sangiago, shortening the bus drive from 60 to 30 minutes. From las terrazzas and from cabarete it takes hours to ride to the next big town. Besides it is not so hot like the other 2 places and there is a bigger expat community and of course larger shop and restaurant choices. Also there is an international airport. For me Puerto Plata is clearly No 1 of those three places

I love Spain. I was there just before the lockdown. So glad I got out as they were absolute tyrants in many areas keeping people locked up and closing businesses. But I don't agree that isn't an expensive country. Very easy to find a nice but cheap place to rent in a small town or even some cites on the coast with great local buses to take a person into the bigger towns and cities. 250-600 euros for a 2 bedroom terraced house or apartment. Less in villages. I have friends living frugally on $800 to $1200 per month in Costa del Sol. Within a short walk to grocery stores, the weekly farmer's market and really everything one needs in the town. Many expats in the south so you can make friends easily if you only speak English.

Thanks for sharing your insights based on your experience.....one criteria you did not include, which is highly subjective, would be preference of culture. An appreciation for the culture might make up for some of the other shortcomings. To live and be happy in a country, it helps if you like the culture....so, not to disagree.... but for me, from a cultural standpoint I would rate the Dominican Republic first. I much prefer the culture in the DR over Mexico and the Philippines. Of course, there is no way to rate preference of culture since each person will have their own likes and dislikes. To each their own.

The only American musicians I met there were struggling. But that was in small towns during a pandemic. It might be possible in larger towns like Manila or in super touristy areas like Boracay. But I would bring some extra cash in case it is slow getting started. I am pretty sure putting out your hat and playing amazing music would get a bunch of attention, but a local family of 4 survives nicely on about $500 USD per month and have very little discretionary income.

I like your channel but I sometimes find your visa information somewhat lacking. Dominican Republic: I don't know. I went once and wouldn't want to return. Philippines: You're right about staying as a tourist with extensions for three years then flying out and in for a reset in normal times. But not now! Because of Covid people hitting their three years must leave and they will NOT be allowed back in! Mexico: Mexico is indeed very generous with their six month tourist visa. But being denied entry trying a visa run after that is a real risk as their immigration does not like people to live permanently in Mexico that way. So there are cases of settled people having to abandon all their possessions in Mexico that got that surprise. Temporary residence leading to permanent residence after five years can be obtained either with income or showing money in a bank or investment account. The best advice is explore with the tourist visa and if you want to live there apply for formal residence if you can qualify. Also some people just overstay. Not recommended but reports are Mexico isn't aggressively looking for that.
