It's a barrio classic, but some of the themes might not resonate with you if you're younger and like a fourth or fifth generation immigrant. I was a teenager when this movie came out, so I had heard and experienced similar stories to this movie in my personal life. Plus, I was a college bound kid and decided I didn't want to be a sellout like that punk azz "Willie" after seeing this. It helped me stay true to my culture.

I agree with the points regarding Edward James Olmos character but overall this was a really good film. This is film captured the Mexican American experience from a family perspective. Displaying all the ups and downs a family will go through over the course of 50yrs or so. So as far as it being labeled a Barrio classic perhaps not but certainly a gem of Mexican American film.

Love your channel. I've seen A LOT of movies in and around the 'barrio film' genre, so I wanted to throw out a few older, lesser-known, more 'peripheral' suggestions: (1) 'Boulevard Nights,' (2) 'I Like It Like That,' (4) 'Walk Proud' (starring Robby Benson in brown face), and (5) possibly 'Crack House'--which I consider to be more of a blaxploitation homage, but in which the male protagonist is ostensibly Latino (though the actor who plays him is named is Gregg Thomsen). None of these are great movies (except perhaps 'Crack House' as a cult classic), but your take on them would be amusing to say the least. I also recently watched 'El Norte' but it was pretty slow. Then, of course, there's 'Scarface,' but I assume you've gotten many requests for that one and, I further assume, I'll be seeing it on your channel at some point:). Finally, please also do 'End of Watch' with Michael Pena (same director as 'The Tax Collector')--not that I have any doubt that it's already on your radar:). Again, love your channel. Keep it up!

@@themadmurse5212 William Forsythe is one of my absolute favorite actors (Richie from 'Out for Justice'--need I say more?!). What? This is the definition of a barrio classic. If you have ever taken a Chicano history class, you see that someone did their homework in writing this addressing the aftermath of the US-Mexico War (w el Californio), the immigrant generation (1900-1920), repatriation waves of the 1930s, Pachuco culture, the brother that assimilated and is ashamed of being Chicano. I actually use this movie when I teach about Chicano cinema
