I love when people say "all things are relative" and don't realize that that includes their statement. I think it’s best to speak about commonalities and create rapport, than to go directly to difference between “other”. Creating rapport may potentially allow for constructive differences rather than duking it out right up front. “The wise fisher of men, in order to gain all, ought to attune himself to all, even though his attempts have small success.” -St Ignatius Loyola

Can you please timestamp the part where you heard "all things are relative"?

@@xuvial1391 Sure. 🤓 (you understand, I was supporting the idea that moral relativism is incongruent)

@Eric-ve1rc 💯… it made me bring to mine. A boss I had who was a Christian scientist and during our breaks, he would come out and tell us how if we had faith we wouldn’t have to go to the doctor. I asked him what his ophthalmologist thought about it. (he wears glasses.) he became silent and walked away.

@Eric-ve1rc Bishop Barron wonderfully speaks similarly regarding “relativism” in this recent upload… “Is Christianity Useful to the West?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJfanGV5Z7yKeKssi=5vcAEkxz_yKju7A8 and an older one…. I am all for the friendly start. I don't try to be combative/negative. That said, it's quite apparent people avoid difficult discussions with the old "But how can we really know?" gambit. Then an agreeable/friendly tone gets reversed into a bit of a social weapon. It's the social equivalent of "I can't get into a fight, I have glasses on" I personally have the social tread of a bull elephant, so I am a bit indifferent. 😂😂 But I can see how it stops many conversations cold.

Comment for traction. So insightful. My HS students are default relativists while simultaneously holding certain absolute truths/values, that aren’t open for discussion.

another quote came to mind related to this video... when they discuss discerning how to approach "correcting others" ... "In On the Beatitudes, St Gregory Nyssen describes "spiritual asceticism" - that is, "asceticism of the soul - as abstinence from oppressing other people."

It's impossible to debate with people who do not share basic principles. It just devolves into a shouting match. As the old saying goes: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink, and you can't lead a mule anywhere"

I feel called out. Definitely opened the video up with my baseball bat in hand.

In answer to the question of the title, in people of good will, yes. In the militant preachers of the bad news (atheists), it's a way to avoid thinking too much.

I sympathize with abrasive people. People who seem to be of ill will on the Internet. To not engage is burying your talent.
