Is Music Production Damaging Your Eyes?

Eye Health is very important, are you protecting your eyes?
I wanted to make this video because I have always struggled with eye sensitivity and screens. After a few years of figuring out what works for me I decided to share these tips so you can all live a little bit healthier too.
Screens are bad for your eyes. The proximity, intensity and colour of light can leave you short sighted, dry eyed and tired. The blue light disrupts your sleep hormone called melatonin and this could be damaging your health in the long term.
These three tips might help you reduce your eye strain and feel better. Even if your eyes are good right now, it's best to protect them for the future :)
1)Diet and Lifestyle
Make sure that you stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet everyday.
Foods that help with eye health are usually rich in vitamins such as leafy dark greens, berries and salads etc
Try to reduce the amount of fats and oils in your diet too.
Avoid staring at your screen for long periods of time. Sometimes just taking a 3 minute break every half hour can make a huge difference. When you stare at a screen all day you can become short sighted, it's a good idea to spend time outside letting your eyes adjust. When outside in the sun, wear sunglasses to reduce tension (and look cool)
2)Screen Brightness and Blue Light
Use a blue light filter like FLUX to reduce the amount of Blue light emmited by your screen. If you use your computer at night or early in the morning, this will make a big difference to how restful your sleep is.
FLUX is a free option that many trust, you can download it here :
justgetflux.com/
I also use a similar software on my phone, lots of the apps work so just choose one with a nice interface. I use HALO
play.google.com/store/apps/de...
Searching for "Blue Light FIlter" in the app store will return lots of great results.
3)Reduce Glare
If any light is reflecting from your screen you want to try adn identify the casue and fix it, often a window or light directly beside you causes this. Have you ever been outside in the sun and tried to look at your phone? You don't want to squint and strain your eyes like that.
Another tip is to try a cold flannel or towel. Sometimes if my eyes are dry and burned out, I simply get a cold, damp cloth/towel and place it over my eyes while sitting of lying down. Focuss on your breathing to hel relax your facial muscles and let the cooling effect relax and refresh your eyes.
I hope some of this advice helps you as much as it has helped me,
Michael

When you sit in front of your computer for longer period of time you tend to blink below normal blinking rate which is 12 to 14 blinks per minute. This causes insufficient tear production causing dry eye. To avoid this blink frequently so that your lacrimal gland can produce enough tear to lubricate your eyes. Always remember 20-20-20 rule. i.e in every 20 minutes look 20 ft far for about 20 seconds. This will allow your eye muscle to relax and prevent accommodative spasm (spasm of ciliary muscle that helps in accommodation). From an Optometrist.

Great video not only for those who work with Music Production! The glare struggle is so real, almost drove me insane at my previous work. Glare from huge windows all around and from REALLY strong lights (not sure why they want to make all offices look like supermarkets these days) into the monitor, it was giving me massive migraines and eye strain.

Hi Michael, first off thanks for another video, the holistic approach in which you are developing the channel is fantastic! I would throw in a few tips from me related to three categories: 1) Nutrition - blueberries, other blue-coloured fruits as well as yellow, green and red veggies and egg yolks plus organ meats like liver provide you with the anioxdants that have high affinity to eyes (means that they are esily directed towards eye structures and retained there), vitamins and minerals that all work alongside to maintain the vision process and as well as the particular structures of the eyes. 2) Bluelight blockers -- getting a pair of special glasses it is a great way to protect your eyes. Choosing a monitor with an anti-glare matte finish is the best choice than a glossy one. 3) Exercises - strain and relaxation cycle can be trained with a simply exercise: Close a thumb towards your eyes and see it clearly for just 2-3 seconds then look in the distance that is further from you than at least 6 meters away until your eyes become pleasantly relaxed and keep them like this for few seconds (past this point there is no strain of the muscles in a person with a normal 20/20 vision). Repeat several times .

Man this is such a relatable video for me I've spent the last few days researching ways to reduce eye strain due to long hours producing. On top of your tips what had worked for me is buying lubricating eye drops and just using a few drops when you wake up in the morning and after a production session it really helps keep the eyes from drying up since we blink less when using computers 👍

Well timed video. I got insomnia about 4 weeks ago. I installed F.lux a few days ago and think its helping. My doctor who I saw yesterday said that harsh blue light can suppress Melatonin for up to 4 hours. Work that out,- if you want to sleep at 10:30pm , you're looking at 7pm or so as your last time on the computer. Now , even with F.lux I am off the computer at 8:30pm, and I think this is helping me. I've slept better since F.lux.

I work as a programmer and do some music production as a hobby so I sit more than 12 hours a day in front of the screen (actually two screens) . What helps me is to sit much further from the screens than the "recommendations" say (I have my screens about 1,5m from my eyes) and feel fine, but I still think that > 12h screen activity is pretty bad in a long period of time, so I think I will switch from using software synths into hardware & instruments during the week and leave computer activity for the weekend.

I was using flux long time ago. Now I'm using Win10's built-in tool. Also using similar tool for my phone screen. It really helps a lot. Even a few minutes of usage is enough to make you addictive. 1) Usually every monitor (the visual one) has refresh frequency of 60Hz. But, the higher the frequency of the monitor, the less our eyes struggle to make sense of what the monitor shows, so set it higher if you can (not every monitor has more options, and if it does it requieres more power from your computer). In my case I have it at 75Hz. 2) And the classic tip: reduce brigtness and contrast, to a point that the monitor isn't more shiny than your walls.

Yes, must take breaks from staring on the monitors for too long. My monitor is near the window. This absorbs more natural light during day use. Not forgetting the headphone. When I overuse them, I mean straining to listen hard over a long period of time, I get ear ringing. I immediately stop using them. I try to use the monitor speaker as much as possible.

Most desktop monitors have the option to disable or lower the blue light. If your monitor doesn't support disabling blue light, get computer glasses. Flux adds input lag, and can't mess with your frame-rate. For music producing it's not a problem, but if you want all in one, including when you are gaming, you might want to avoid using Flux.

I find that apples True Tone technology on their newer devices dramatically decreases eye stress. in fact when I go from my Macbook pro to my windows laptop it actually feels like its burning my eyes compared to the Mac. also night mode on apple stuff in a 22:00-7:00 schedule completely eliminates that keeping you awake feeling. .

I do graphic design and video editing and some gaming most of the time. when I'm doing that I can't use blue light filters. they just ruin colors. which I need to see.. this can be used in gaming and watching videos. but I don't like that orangeish color. I work almost the whole day looking at displays. I take breaks to see distant objects but not much. seems like I'm addicted to displays... but it doesn't hurt my eyes and doesn't affect my sleep much. is this normal or am I getting unnoticeable damage 🤔😨

xzchc Yeah I can't stand seeing those screen 2 ft above eye level! I definitely have more to learn about the ergonomic side of it but I'm trying my best for now. These days pretty much all operating systems already implement software by default to filter out the blue light and make the screen colour temperature warmer. On Windows it's in the settings. On Mac it should be on the notification right-side panel, otherwise if you have an old Mac and Apple shit doesn't make you support that by default you can simply download f.lux like he said in this video, it's free and very good and on Linux distributions like Ubuntu it's in the settings or it's an application called "Red Shift"
