Yeah this is really common especially from people who grew up in English-speaking households where they learned to speak English and their signing was more signed exact English (SEE) than true ASL. A lot of Deaf people who grow up in those situations are also prone to code switching which is when they change the grammar of their signing to be more english-based if somebody who doesn't sign or doesn't sign well approaches. It's almost entirely unconscious and sometimes they'll even say the words or partially say some of the words as a way to, again, unintentionally help the person that doesn't know sign. Im a first year deaf studies major so what I'm saying is just what I've learned, of course not everyone does this and I'm not an expert.

Yes I grew up Oral speaking English. But I learned how to sign with a friend at the mainstream school. She is CODA she helped me better understand class. so I was able to experience both Deaf and Hearing world.

This makes sense! I dont sign but when I trained my dogs i used typical and gestures all the time, pointing when I said "go over there", or palm facing down when saying "lay down." And now sometimes when we have company over, if i just gesture to my dogs - so as not to interrupt out guest talking - the dogs understand what I mean.

I trained my dogs with hand signs too. Dogs get a lot of of vocal inflection but hand signs help them understand what we want.

Isn't it cause like they relate the movement to a gesture. Kind of like a word to a movement? EX: If you put your hand up and they lay down. And you do it over and over wouldn't they like, connect "OH This hand gesture means to lay down"

I can hear but my kid has like really sensitive hearing and he'll actually come up to me in the kitchen and scold me for being too loud with the dishes (he's 4, it's kinda cute and kinda like living with a tiny dictator). I have to remember to warn him when I'm going to do something especially loud like use the mixer so he doesn't freak out.

@@sanityisrelative I have sensitivity problems (a disorder called Central Sensitization Syndrome), and thank you so much for being considerate of him. As a kid with sensitive hearing it was REALLY tough sometimes-- the vacuum cleaner was awful! Fortunately my parents would warn me too. Unfortunately, my mom has really loud sneezes and she couldn't always warn me about those XD If it helps, sensitivity problems often get less severe with age! I can run the vacuum cleaner myself these days :) I still have pain sensitivity and misophonia, but it's gotten a lot better in general. So it should hopefully get better for him as he gets older! If you need advice from someone with a sensory processing disorder, let me know and I can try to answer any questions you might have :)

Just a tip, IF the whining/crying does bother you, make sure to firmly but kindly correct the behavior. Definitely do not give affection while its happening because that encourages it just like any other reward would. :)

And by firm that doesn’t mean yelling or hitting your dog!!! Remember that they are basically little kids and you wouldn’t yell and smack a 4 yr old for crying about something no matter how annoying or not worth getting upset over it might be. Trust is a very important thing in any bond and dogs too, i noticed that my dogs are 100 times more trusting and loyal and honestly more obedient for me than my moms dogs are for her(bc when they act out she will smack them as hard as she can and yells at them. When i was really young i remember her making some dogs so afraid they would pee out of fear bc she would get so insane when they were disobedient)

I don't know about Ryan, but I have deaf friends who I met swing dancing. They could feel the beat through the vibrations from the floor. We had two follows and one lead who were deaf, and they were all great dancers who could definitely feel the music.

I think a really good way to fix this problem (if you're determined to), is to install a variable noise-reactive light that flashes when it hits its limit. You could even plug it in with a power switch timer, so it powers on automatically after 10 PM. A red one would probably be best. So as the noise gets louder, the light gets more red. When it reaches a certain threshhold, it'd start flashing.

Not meaning to be offensive-honestly!-but even being deaf doesn’t mean we don’t need to be aware of what time it is before using power tools late at night. Just saying that I don’t think Ellen is being “ignorant” to run to the garage to quiet the screeching drill at 1 a.m. No one wants sleep-deprived, hostile neighbors, so it’s pretty important not to, like, mow at 6 a.m. or use a power saw at midnight or whatever. We had a neighbor once who didn’t even like our son to shoot hoops after 10 or so (not with friends, just alone). The pound-pound-pound of the dribbling kept him awake. Granted, a tad over-sensitive in our minds, but we did comply b/c the guy was otherwise very kind, he did have to work in the mornings, and we didn’t want tension. Besides, if it bothered him, maybe it bothered others, so hoops stopped at 10.🤷🏻‍♀️

I agree. My husband is deaf and is a contractor. He doesn't hear how loud he is, but just like anything else, when you KNOW it's a loud tool, or if dragging something is loud, courtesy says that when it gets late it's time to stop. I hate it when bad manners is blamed on deafness. Part of that is also growing and maturing.

I totally thought the same thing. It's completely understandable to not know when you're too loud if you're doing new or different, like not realizing the tv is too loud or dishes are clanging. That's also never going to bother a neighbor. But that particular drill must always be noisy. Just don't use power tools after 10. P.S. Does Ryan fix cars for a living or is just a hobby? He is obviously very passionate about it. I can't imagine doing anything other than sleep at 1am!!

I love your channel! It’s just so interesting to learn about the dynamics of your relationship and about the differences and similarities between being hearing and deaf. I love ASL - have been trying to teach myself - and your videos also give me a chance to practice my comprehension. I also love people and learning about individuals and how they experience the world and your channel is great in this capacity, too! It’s fascinating to learn about the things I wouldn’t have thought about - different aspects of being hearing, deaf, and/or both sides of a relationship like yours! 2 questions. I’ve noticed in your videos that if you’re holding something in one hand (camera, food, whatever) you still sign with the other hand. How do you modify them (if at all) to make them understandable? Also, do you guys ever feel judged or like people are staring in public because you’re signing? And if so how do you deal with this? I'm hearing but sign a lot with my friends and whenever I/we are holding something, first as deaf culture its more appropriate to put the object down-similar to not talking with food in your mouth. but if you can't @ashtynX is right, you usually sign with the dominant hand. if you can still move the hand but not make hand shapes you just move the hand to the location for the sign and usually its still understandable. There isn't a huge amount of signs in ASL (different in other sign languages) that need both hands or else it doesnt make sense. if it is more complex statement and you need both hands to explain then you just have to put the object down. but many signs that use two hands the hands are mirroring each other so one hand is usually, although maybe awkward, adequate to get the point across.

Could you break down how to say "you're making a lot of noise could you please keep it down"? I feel like for hearing people a finger on your lips is the universal gesture for quiet, so it's good to know that's offensive to deaf people, but alternative gestures would be appreciated!

i teach my one year old niece the signs ik and she can sign them accurately when she needs something and the few word she knows how to say verbally she signs at the same time! I’m so proud of her 😊

I’m curious, if you were to fall, or faint, or be short of breath to the point you can’t speak in another room where Ryan can’t see you, how would he know what’s happening? Like is there a way for him to know if something bad has happened in another room?
