The fact that Doug doesn't realize how popular mouse pads and wrist rests are reveals how much of a market they're not tapped into. Desk accessories are the biggest opportunity for them right now. High quality material from a great American brand that people want - and they could get their hands on some things they'd use every day without spending $2,000+. And wyrmwood already has production capabilities. Felt, leather, and wood. Easy move here. If they ever got into bending thin metal - could capture an even wider audience.

Desk pads are a must to protect your desktop. However, I would never use a felt desk pad. You get any sort of condensation on that felt, it could soak through and damage your desktop. Leather would be your best bet without going SKU crazy.

As a desk owner, I can confirm that the assembly was ATROCIOUS. Not because of complexity, but the lack of instructions. I only found the ones on the website after completion, even after searching the web extensively. I didn't have too big an issue with the cubbies, but figuring out where each piece gets screwed into was a problem. Plus, the lack of clamping is a huge issue. I love it, but frick instructions would have been great.

Sadly, I decided to cancel my desk order earlier this year after it was over 2 years from my original order date and a year over estimated delivery. However, my bigger concern was add-ons like the mount mount getting cut from production, resulting in me feeling like the desk as a whole wasn't as well designed as I originally thought. My worry is that this was going to be a much less useful desk for much more $$$ than the very standard one I currently own. Being able to clamp things on safely was mandatory for me in buying a desk this pricey. I think Bobby makes some great points in this video. I loved the initial idea of Wyrmwoods deck but felt a bit misled at what stage their development process was at when pre-ordering. Wyrm life made it seem that the majority of components were near finalization. Considering there were aspects of my deck order 2 year later still not out of development, I was pretty annoyed. After watching this video I think I definitely made the right choice, honestly, this whole experience has made me suspicious of other large $$$ products I had my eye on at Wyrmwood.

Before I rebuilt my desk using a Ikea island counter top, I would have loved to just buy a 3/4-1" think top in the wood of my choice from you. I don't want all the mag accessories, just allow us to mount it to what ever leg solution I want, then I can mount\clamp that SoB all day long.

As a part owner of a small woodworking business, reach out to a local woodworker if you just want a desk top. I would only go to Wyrmwood if you want something unique to Wyrmwood and I don't feel that a wood counter top is a good example of that.

Couldn't agree more with this statement. A long time ago, Ikea sold awesome, cost effective wood tabletops which are perfect, I've used mine for years. When I go to replace it, what you suggested is exactly what I want. Just a 1 inch thick top in the wood of my choice. From there I can screw whatever I want into it/mount it, etc. Maybe offer some options for pre-cut holes in the back for cords/mounting but outside of that keep it simple. No one is offering this today at a reasonable price.

I got my desk a few weeks ago and I can echo a lot of these. The first issue in assembling was with the sit stand legs, every part of the instructions implied that the parts required minimal force to just click into place, when they needed quite a lot of force. I assume this was because the demo desks had been assembled and disassembled a few times. I eventually found the brand of the legs and searched up their instructions for more detail where they instructed you had to stand on one of the locks in order to press it in. The next problem was in aligning the legs with the attachment bracket to the desk. All of the instructions showed the legs being positioned in the center of the bracket when assembling, then on finished desks you can make out that the legs need to be about 3/4ths of the way to the rear of the bracket in order to line up with the holes on the desk. This made sense in the end because the feat are longer on one side but was still unintuitive during that step. Last in assembly the cubbies, While overall the experience of these wasn't awful one large thing stood out. I had the wide and short cubbies for the xl desk, during the final 3 screws for the center divider getting everything lined up so that the screws neither tore out the side of the panel, and were going straight into the wood was a NIGHTMARE. It likely was assembler error somewhere but it felt like the pilot holes for these screws in the divider and counter sunk holes in the cubbies were ever so slightly off causing huge problems. I also agree that having the screws visible on the sides of the cubbies is a bit of an eyesore compared to the beauty of the rest of the desk. My desk arrived in 14 total boxes due in large part to the cubbies and having 3 drawers small medium and large in both of them. Reducing that two just two boxes with them pre assembled would have been a huge improvement. Finally I agree with JP that the unknown of if my monitor and microphone arms will work at all with the desk has been a large barrier to actually moving my setup to the new desk, I'm hesitant to tear everything down if I'm not sure it will fit as is or if I need to go buy other arms.

Maybe I'm missing something, but Bobby had a quick suggestion about removing the magnetic rails on the back. That seems to me to be the way to go. What are you mounting on the back other than monitors or heavy/long arms to hold mics and equipment. All of which would be easier to mount without the rails.

Two thoughts: - Implement thin metal plates to the under side of the desk so that one could use something like magnetic cable and mounting attachments - CNC a low profile cutout in the center of the desk top. Look into the standard/common desk mat sizes and use that as your guide. You’d then be able to sell leather or felt inserts. Plus customers could just slap in their own

I can't see anyone that would want to pay specifically for the craftsmanship of a Wyrmwood desk that WOULDN'T want a big leather (or similar 'quality' material) desk mat. With mice now all using lasers everyone just uses one giant mousepad/mat that serves as the mousepad, keyboard pad and makes your desk feel welcoming. It's kind of like having a rug in your living room.

The monitor arm concern is also mine. While I considered drilling the desk to surface mount the arms, it’s too nice. The only mag rail accessory I would likely use is a cup holder. However, let’s be honest, I would need 10 cup holders to hold my empties. Also, convincing my wife that I need to replace my $100 IKEA desk with something that costs $3000 is going to be tough.

I have a few wood keyboard wrist rests. One goes in my bag for the office and the other for home. I've worn through the finish on both, but it gives it that worn guitar look. Hold up, my fiance and I literally put deposits down on a desk at PAX Unplugged two weeks ago and one of our concerns was the ability to mount monitors and such to it. Multiple Wyrmwood staff told us this is not a problem and that they only stopped selling them with the desks because most people had their own already or knew what they wanted to pick up. Were we lied to? Side note, I cannot understand wanting a Wyrmwood desk without the rail system. That's entirely the selling point to us and I can't wait to not have my cup, mug, headphones, and other accessories on top of the desk surface, but off to the side. It's specifically because I'm a desk minimalist that the rail system HELPS me in that regard and not the other way around. Without the rail system, the desk surface would get cluttered and your minimalist style goes out the window.

I didn't go for the modular desk on release specifically because they didn't address the clamping issue in a satisfactory way. The "solution" at the time was "here's our own approved monitor clamp and you have to use if exactly as we describe." I also still think modular accessories for specialized functions (monitor bridge with a pair of 2U 19" racks, 19" racks that replace the drawers, drafting table top, etc) would have gotten it out of competing with ikea.

he's right, not being able to clamp stuff made everything way more expensive and is why I didn't back the campaign. The rail is great on my MGT but I just couldn't think of a use past the headphone holder for it on my desk that wasn't better solved by a physical object on the desk or clamped. Its already hard to find mic stands and things that are just right for a setup, having to find ones that also are compatible with it is near impossible. Also, leather for a mouse pad sounds like an awful experience. They are the material that they are for a reason, it needs to glide and track correctly.
@DarthPoyner
@DarthPoyner 18 сағат бұрын
Gliding wouldn't be a problem. Using the right type of leather, over time it would get even better for gliding and comfort. I'm just not so sure about the quality of DPS that you would get. Mouse/Keyboard mats are specifically made so that the lasers in the mice can read optimally. I am sure that the leather would be ok. But I am just not sure that after time when it gets that oil rub from your hands if it would continue to reflect as well. Probably fine, would have to really look into it. Also, you would have discoloring in the areas that get more hand traffic.

For Bobby's Desk thickness thing, what if you put a wider piece as the apron so that it accomodates the close clamp and wider clamp, and if it's a little wider for clamping you still have a place to put the mag rail if you want and that would add to the structural requirements, or you could put a t chanel in the wider thiner apron for a metal T frame for the structural support, that would also cover the Thin desk look. Mine is an 1 7/16 on the edges with a 3/4" thick 4" wide apron attached to the bottom of my 3/4" desk top. I have enough room to clamp, and I can mount things like docs or disc drives or whatever closer to the edges and I would have enough room to put a mag rail if I wanted to.

I think the big loss in nixing the mount mount was that it it could hold more than monitors. It could hold lights, cameras, and microphones. All of which you could clamp down on the mount mount. I was really hoping to use it to setup lights and camera's around my game table for streaming, then be able to just put them away when I'm not doing that. I don't have to think if it's in the right spot or would get in the way because now it's simple to just connect and disconnect, or slide along the rail.

They need some cutouts in the desk topper to mount things. The desktop is big, having monitors all the way on the back may be excessive for some. Just have an open cutout or some smaller 1/3 of the way in from the back that the mounts can go down in, or install pipe mounts right in there/as an option - which isn't quite as modular but offers more options for where to mount things instead of only on the outside.

Besides the assembly process being a bit tough, I managed alright; the other thing that left a sour taste in my mouth is the amount of waste cardboard associated with every drawer box. You guys had a great idea with the Mount mount, and it was suddenly killed. It was one of my primary reasons for buying the modular desk, and now I'm not sure how I'm going to mount anything to this. As for the assembly, our big problem was lack of adequate directions. I found the online instructions(at least one page was out of order on it) and the video, but they don't really tell the full story, so it was tricky to put together. Also, our problem with the cubbies was installing them upside down and having to undo every screw to fix it.

I am team Bobby. I had tried to talk myself into a Wyrmwood desk earlier this year, but I also didn’t really want any rail accessories. In the end I got one from elsewhere that just has a very lovely Saman wood top with very good quality and strong legs, added some very low profile under mount metal device bays and hidden cable management, and still saved a good chunk of money. Which, by the way, I had saved for the Wyrmwood desk when it was teased in the beginning when I assumed it would be my most favorite desk ever…Wyrmwood makes lovely things, I have dropped a good chunk of change on your products, but the modular desk is simply not designed for my needs and aesthetics. It’s real nice, but it isn’t what I needed. - I want my cup next to my fingers during work, not in the edge of the desk elsewhere - I wanted casters because I also use the desk for games and crafts and moving it has a value - I wanted to undermount everything to hide it invisibly, and not everything fit nicely into the Wyrmwood compartments for that - desk matts are lovely - I also like wrist rests, though I find I don’t use them with my sit stand because I like my desk way high and lean on it like a tall bar height situation. - I have a smaller space where you walk past it often and I don’t want my items hanging on magnets off the edge where I can knock expensive or fragile things off - I also want the multiple mounts for ultra wide monitors and microphones and such, and those clamps are beefy - I also want it to look really clean, bonus doohickeys everywhere doesn’t look like a clean end product. I want to hide the things in lovely ways, like the cable management does.

I’m not sure if this has been brought up in the past, but if you’re looking for suggestions, I’d like for there to be a smaller desk. I love the idea of the rails on a desk, but 60” is way too big for me (so to speak). My current desk is 42”, which is a perfect fit for my life. I don’t have a ton of room, plus my desk is a writing desk (I also paint minis on it), and I also exclusively use laptops, so I don’t need anything bigger (so to speak). While the sit/stand could be useful, it’s honestly not a thing that matters to me, and I don’t need shelves, so I’d be quite down with just a sitting desk. Maybe just using the MGT legs, to reduce parts production, and to allow for some height variability (or maybe to be another coffee table option). Anyway, just a thought.

Personally, I think the problem with the desk is the competition on the low end. So easy to get a cheap desk for under $400 that is a sit stand desk, and sure, it will not be a high quality wood like wyrmwood but still a resilient composite top in whatever color you want. To Bobby's points, you can clip or add anything you want to those cheap desks without any pricey attachments.

The lack of clamping surfaces is a problem with my current desk. It's not a Wyrmwood desk, but it's a very nice (and expensive) solid wood Amish built desk. However, it was designed and made just before clamping/mounting things to your desk was a thing. I'm continually frustrated that I can't even do a small c-clamp anywhere, much less attach a monitor arm. If you're considering a rail-less version of the desk, I would think removing or reducing the rails would offset some of the additional thickness the desk top would require.

The quality is a huge difference. You can go cheap and get the standing set for 500-700 then spend 50 bucks at Ikea to get a top to put on, but it is trash. You can spend up to 100-200 on a decent top and it works fine. I pulled the top off the desk I was replacing and attached it. Been great for 5 years now. But their option, as with all their products, is the luxury of real wood along with style. THAT is what is being paid for. And the quality they are outputting WILL last you generations if you care for it. If you are not more into the disposable lifestyle that is. Also, most of the modular stuff they made for the desk is useless.

I've always thought that the magnetic rail and accessories make sense for the tables because they're vaulted, and the whole usual function of a table is removed when using the vault. With a desk - just put your shit on the flat surface.

I bought a high end prophesy from you and was redoing my office and looked at the desks about 6 months ago. I ended up deciding against getting one since they seem to be in a weird middle ground of kinda high end, kinda cheap. They didn’t seem as well thought out and designed as I would like. I don’t need custom attachments like I do for the table. I ended up having a local shop build it instead - it is nice, but not as nice as the prophesy.

If I had a little more confidence in my woodworking abilities and felt confident no unforseen issues would arise. My ideal desk would be a lilliput where I built my computer inside of the vault, chopping the legs off to be flush with the base and attaching it to a sit/stand base.

Ive had my desk for about 3 months now. First thing, Doug mentioned it, I have an XL Wenge and I have had some issues with wood migration, (WW is handling it) so removing the supports is probably not a great idea. I just ordered a cupholder so the rails stay for me :). My longstanding pet peeve is how little regard goes into trying to make the desktops look uniform on such an expensive product not like 100 scrap pieces that were glued together regardless of the darkness of the wood. I understand thats partially the nature of the thing but PLEASE put some thought into uniformity, grading the pieces for being close before feeding them into the machines. And then looking at the boards before glueing them together. The assembly. I was watching this today from that desk while looking at the not quite square and wobbly cubby (the tops and sides dont even have predrllled holes I was afraid of splitting the wood just. assembling the thing). The wedges that are supposed to lock the legs\motors in place didnt fit (not that the legs are going anywhere. I think I built the thing in about 4 sessions there were so many steps.

I feel like the community stated all of these issues back when you were developing the desk. The fact of the matter is you cannot compete with an electric stand off amazon and a two inch butcher counter top from a hardware store. 98x25x2" solid wood top, rip to size. $470 combo before tax. The major selling point for wyrmwood is the premium wood species and accessory rail. Unfortunately the rail is also a major hitch because as mentioned most desk accessories are clamp or screw mounted. The present design does not well accommodate this.

As a desk owner myself, I think you should consider moving towards solutions that utilize the magnetic rail, avoiding any damage to the wood. For example, a monitor mount that attaches securely to the rail or a snap-in microphone mount to hold your mic arm or boom safely and efficiently.

Another thing I would have loved to have seen, would be to at LEAST have my drawers pre-assembled when shipped. The cubby assembly is a PITA, and having to screw on the drawer faces felt like a slap in the face, when the box they came in was clearly big enough to have had the assembled face done at the factory, with less error possibility. My total assembly time was like 6 hours.

the topper block isn't flat-pack....so there goes the whole "everything flat-packs to save on shipping" ethos. but my 1st thought when the issue was raised: why not put small hinges on the inside so it still flat-packs, and the only thing the customer has to do is pop in a back plate.

Well... considering the amount of different sizes keyboards there are in the market, I think don't wrist rests would be very complicated. but if you go with a "Curved palm rest for split keyboard" with felt on the botton to slide over the table, could be a nice product. I also agree with Bobby about the "issues" to clamp things on the desk. the magnetic bar in the back is the largest, but how many times you need to reach the back of your desk to pick up anything... most of the computer desks will be with their desks against a wall anyway... the casters idea for me is very situational... now many times you need to move your computer desk anyway? on my first computer desk we had casters and we never moved the desk out of her original spot.

make a full desk (or nearly full desk) leather play mat and I'll buy a bunch of those. With a bit of rubberized texture on the bottom to not slide too much; and some nice sewed stitched edging.... would be very nice.

I want a desk. I'm a potential customer. But, I'm weighing the purchase against the $175 IKEA desk I already have. Yes, the IKEA is a pressboard POS. But, it works. Built in cable management. Built in drawers. I can modify it with brackets, extra hardware, etc and not have any hesitation about drilling into a piece of heirloom furniture. I've spent more on mounts and hardware than I did the desk (granted, not by much). The problem with the mag rail is that there are no DESK accessories. Cupholder, fine, that's a good one, but what else? Headphone hanger is alright, but if you're using a wireless set then it already has a cradle/charger. We need power distribution, QD microphone/camera mounts, hardwired phone charger, speaker stands (and you need to think about this one, including anti-vibration features and cable routing), laptop dock, paper/document storage, writing leaf, book holder, mag rail lamp... Also, also, even the 'standard' size desk is remarkably large for many modern spaces. A liliput desk would have a place in the lineup. That, and, once you get done building even a modest modular desk, it's $3k. Which isn't so much a complaint as it is to point out your customers in that price range have certain expectations and sensitivities that the average IKEA enjoyer doesn't. RE: Desk mats - If you don't know what you're doing, and you haven't asked the opinions of any real gamers, just don't bother. Really great products exist for $30 and you're going to find it really difficult to come in with a better product or price, and you don't have the market reach to make up for those challenges (and thus costs) in volume.

The one thing for mats I see is if they make them custom cut to the size / unique shape of the desk. There is a market of folks who might care enough about the perfect look to pay extra for a Wyrmwood one.

I love the look of the desks, but honestly I'm with Bobby I'm a desk minimalist. I built my desk out of a nice hardwood slab, that I shaped with a grinder then attached it to a sit-stand base. I used an overpriced monitor arm that clamps to the back (although I wish there was a more elegant solution), to hold my 42" monitor. My biggest issue is finding a better solution for holding my PC. Most PC mounts are either ugly or too small-delicate for my giant watercooled monstrosity. I've tried placing it on the top of the desk, but I find it distracting and not aesthetically pleasing. I built a temporarily solution out of angle-iron, but am still musing about the perfect solution.

as someone who built my desk a couple of weekends ago, the endless amount of cardboard i have to deal with and get rid of because everything was flat packed is actually insane, definitely do something about that. i like building stuff so assembly wasnt a problem but for the rails, i dont think they need to be removed, but they could stand to have been a little thinner with less of that bevel, so that desk clamps could actually fit on it. I do have a question as well, if you do make these changes to the desk, what will you offer people who have the original verison but might want to change something? also the pc mount is a total dud, i dont even have that large of a case but with the cable management cubby installed, it interferes with the back of the pc, but the mount is maxed out and the pc is pushed as far to the front as it will go. im building a new pc this week, and im taking the mount off entirely, totally not worth it.

Love the desks, want one for sure. But my $200 Amazon special does about 80% of what they’ll do. So I’d be paying simply for quality, mag rails, & a little more storage. All of which is great, but I can’t justify the price.

Just like Bobby, my opinion of the desk is that I want to want one, but I just don't. I'm a big dude and having big custom cubbies on both sides of the desk like I would want restricts the space where my legs would go too much. The thought of sitting at it as is feels unwelcoming. If I go with only single cubbies instead then I don't have any real storage space in the desk, which defeats a big part of the purpose of a desk. I don't know what the solution is, but as it is I haven't been able to make myself want one. I'd be in the market too--I just bought a table and a plethora of accessories.

assembling the desk was a definite exercise in frustration trying to make sense of the video and parts. it would tell you to screw something in but which freakin screw? multiple sizes and no direction on which where. and then i had a whole bag of screws that i've still no idea what they were supposed to be used for... they reminded me of ones you use to mount something to a wall, but that didn't make sense for a desk that is supposed to move... should take a key from ikea and provide a part list and be able to use that to say which hardware is used where. i do worry the oil from skin will stain the desk where i sit

If I ever get a desk, id use it to put my 3D printers on. Raising it up and down would help, hell even probably use it to assemble them instead (Prusa ones) would be very helpful. Build them on the desk, and use the added casters to roll the desk to the location printer will be moved to would be amazing.

Also I would definitely not have bought a desk if it hadn't had a magnetic rail. I have no desire to clamp anything that way. So I'm very different to Bobby in my needs. I have a basic sit-stand deck from Ikea right now, and it's fine, but there's no storage. So I would have loved to have storage solutions, and accessories to get my drinks and other doo-dads off the desk surface.
