guys, this is all wrong! feminism is a political movement and showing the standard body does not contribute to women's rights and still delivers exactly what patriarchy wants: women exposed to a male gaze. I don't believe that any exposure / sexualization of the female body is feminism. it may have to do with self-esteem, it may be a personal milestone, it may be acceptance, but feminism is collective. it is to defend the legalization of abortion, it is to fight to have more women in politics, in corporate leadership, in the courts, in decisive positions in the media. it's pushing for laws that protect us, it's fighting for rape and sexual harassment to stop harassing women, etc. Why do successful women show their bodies and successful men don't? Because they don't have to.

I can kind of see your point. It's like guys who spend 5 days a week in the gym to appeal to women. Sure they look great, but at the end of the day, it's not all that matters, everyone knows that it's not all that matters. Sure, plastic surgery can make someone look appealing - but at the end of the day, it should never be the thing that is so praised and glorified and reacted so intensely to. There's a lot more to a woman than her body and face, and that expectation of seeing, hearing, and demanding excellence from the mind and soul first and foremost - for both men and women - should be the standard.
@iwatchtoomuchyoutube

@@olenabogdanov I mean, going to the gym is healthy though. Nothing about plastic surgery is "healthy" (for the average, able bodied person). The gym can be bad to extreme excess, but compared with people slicing into themselves or poking their bodies I'd say it's a positive alternative and there's nothing wrong with wanting to look good for the opposite sex, or go just to feel good. I get where your coming from but the gym can help as a form of "mindfulness" or "self-care" for the average person which can benefit them as a whole, whereas if you get surgery you're risking a laundry list of side effects, including addiction to pain pills and death.

(But it should be an informed and healthy one , as in, peace of mind, no pressure.) Women can be horny too? Women can also have sexual desires/fantasies and thus potential preferences in body shape/size? It's not all "the male gaze."'s fault... 👁 Is a lot of our perception of beauty influenced by what we see daily in this capitalist society? Definitely. Are most of those "influences" coming from the 'majority population' in North America, and Europe (historically christian denomination-white people) AND mostly men (who dominate businesses corporate/marketing world)? Absolutely. So essentially, we need to rip the system, or get new people in charge and that's exactly what's been happening over the last 2 decades. (and we need more of.) As of now, people of color now make up around 50%+ of advertising.(At least in Canada, which is still 70%+ white) So for Gen Z who's grown up with it, the signals are there. It's time....But it's all been tainted by the way the corporations do it as pure PR stunting, just like companies and pride month. The rich, white CEO's hire a few extra africans/asian americans, and solution solved. They think they solved all of the wests issues... racism, poverty, body issues..... Okay so 🎆💜PART 1 OF MY COMMENT: thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this. My experience was that my breasts hurt whenever I started running (they're normal), so I started doing research on the origin of human female breasts because human females, unlike all other 5000 mammals, carry permanently enlarged breasts (meaning breasts with excess fat) that no other female mammal has to carry. I wondered why. And if that's changeable. Okay so let's start to what my research showed. From the Psychology Today Article, "Why Women Spend So Much Effort on Their Appearance": "The greater importance of physical appearance for women's mate value is confirmed by the fact that their bodies have been more extensively ➡remodeled⬅ by sexual selection than is true of men. Sexually selected feminine traits include narrow waists, permanently enlarged breasts, shorter faces, smaller hands and feet, and conspicuous subcutaneous fat stores. Men are sexually selected for height, muscularity, and beardedness." . . So, women weren't created weak by some deity who decided to relegate and curse them. Women BECAME physically weaker based on how they were sexually selected (by their selectors, namely, ancient males) across centuries and eons. This means that the way we look like is malleable and not permanent or an end-all-be-all arrangement (evolutionarily) and that we can be free to genetically and physically build our own fit and capable body. . . But till now, it's as if our bodies were merely an experiment of sexual selection. A project that they shape, reshape, mutate, correct, and mutilate according to their whims and caprices. But I refuse to be a project. I refuse to live and spend thousands and suffer silently for unnatural (and MONETIZED) beauty. For whom should I suffer so much? For whom should I lose my humanity? I refuse to stay blind to this very insidious and long-drawn-out form of violence. I refuse to bow to the god of monetized beauty. I refuse to stand by as my sisters suffer. And I refuse to be ashamed of my strength and dignity. I refuse to be a coward. . . As of 2011- breast augmentation remains 2nd most practiced surgical cosmetic procedure worldwide sitting at 18.9% of all cosmetic surgical procedures. (currently the first) Hegemonic gendered expectations of femininity in neoliberal-capitalist patriarchal society constitute a symbolic violence that entices women to undergo breast implantation. Breast implantation itself constitutes the visible violent BY-PRODUCT of this SYMBOLIC violence, affecting women’s physical and mental/emotional well-being. This violence is both undertaken and further exacerbated by the medico-legal complex. . . We (cis and trans women) are STILL being confined in a prison. A falsely beautified one, but a prison nonetheless. Maybe worse and way more insidious than the one that historically preceded it. . . The Policing Gaze (of society):  First: The male gaze of patriarchal/androcentric culture → Internalization of socially constructed ideal feminine body → Policing of the self and others.  Leading to second: Technologies of the self to attempt to approximate ideal feminine body → Alienation.  Leading to third: Reinforcement of subordination. Let's start with a little bit of history (on how our bodies became the way they are): Out of all 5000 mammals, human females are the only mammals that carry permanently enlarged breasts (made up of fat and based on how women were sexually selected across centuries). According to the Independent Magazine UK, Lewis Wolpert: Over the course of evolution, breasts became permanently enlarged to resemble the double ovoid region of the distended buttocks. (to remind males of the buttocks, and to probably remind females that they are nothing but sexual objects. It sounds as if we're a walking pair of buttocks?). . Naturally large breasts are BOUND to sag. It's inevitable. That's why they're still unsatisfactory to the male gaze. They need to be surgically or mechanically lifted to resemble buttocks. (keep in mind that breasts are made up of fat). Couple that with anorexic arms. Having completely anorexic/underfed arms with overfed breasts is physiologically impossible. It is impossible to be anorexic and obese simultaneously. Whether you're a man or a woman. (not to mention how dehumanizing it is for someone to feel like they have to have starved, weak arms and also carry a huge weight on their chests to give someone else pleasure. Because the size of one's arms is a symbol of their agency. Keep in mind that Christian slaves were forced to permanently carry huge chain crosses of 11 pounds (5 kg) on their shoulders. Keep this in mind till the end.) . . According to Insider and the Guardian ( www.theguardian.com/.../may/14/breast-size-evolution ), if ancestral males had not shown a preference for the mutation producing permanently enlarged breasts, modern women's chests would resemble the flat thoraxes of the other apes and only enlarge when they're pregnant. (Oh, did you read that? Yup, it's a mutation.) Today, plastic surgery is used by some women, particularly those working in the sex industry, to enhance breast size and exploit ancient male programming. . . From the point of view of another mammal, having permanently enlarged breasts is like being half-pregnant your entire life. . . Even though they appear full, a woman's breasts are made up of fat. The milk glands proliferate from the nipples internally and don't require any fat or weight carried to exist. Breasts with less fat produce just as much milk compared to their heavy counterparts. In fact, breast fat (or the excess of it) impedes the gene that initiates lactogenesis (lactation) according to the International Consortium of Milk Genomics. Yet, that's what we're encouraged to do. And in turn, such lower rates of milk production discourage many women from breastfeeding and compel them to rely on Capitalistic industrialized formulas, but actually refraining from breastfeeding amplifies the risk of breast cancer for the mother (while also hurting the child). This means that when it comes to breasts, quality matters more than quantity. . . On a different note, there's also a conflict of interest here between the man (who wants breast fat or silicon, even if the breasts lost their self-sufficient function) and the child (who needs milk). . But again, you don't breastfeed with your breast fat, but only with your milk glands. We're encouraged to obsess over breast fat, instead of seeking healthy milk glands and aerolae and understanding whether our breasts are actually healthy. . . Disturbingly, breast fat reduction reduced breast cancer risk by a staggering 95% according to Business Insider, which means that excessive breast fat was the culprit. This is further verified by breast cancer rates. In 2020, about 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide. Every 14 seconds, somewhere in the world, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. In the US alone, in 2020, 325,010 women were diagnosed with breast cancer as opposed to only 2,620 men even though men and women have the SAME exact breast tissue. Men only have a smaller layer of breast fat. Couple that with the fact breast fat reduction reduces breast cancer risk by 95%, what do you conclude? . . Breast fat was the culprit because men have breasts too and staggeringly lower breast cancer rates under the same environmental conditions, but their breasts have less fat weighing them. Sadly, breast fat cells cause long-term inflammation and long-term inflammation causes cancer. (Not only will you have to remove your whole breasts/milk glands when breast cancer progresses, but also your OVARIES/trans HRT). Even the hormone, leptin, produced by breast fat cells can induce breast cancer according to NCBI / NIH. And yet the surgery women are encouraged to undertake is NOT breast fat reduction, but that of silicon/saline implants and fat transfer breast augmentation. .

PART 2 OF MY COMMENT: On an alarming note, we didn't mention how more breast fat makes it harder to run or avoid predators. It can be completely incapacitating. (read about the Handicap Principle regarding human breasts and the large tails of male peacocks). Scientists at the University of Portsmouth found that the time taken to complete the marathon by runners can actually increase by between 4.6 to as much as 8.6 minutes for each higher cup size. This means that a woman who wears a 32DD sports bra could take more than 18 minutes longer to complete a marathon than someone who wore a sports bra in size 32A, despite having similar training and fitness levels. It got as bad as 35 MINUTES longer than someone with less breast fat. (then we wonder why there's a huge gender gap in sport performance 😅.) Breast fat could be (statistically) the reason a woman loses her olympic potential, but again, for what or whom? I can personally verify that breasts do hurt so much when you try to run at faster paces (gravity and the nerves in the breasts). If they're not held up extremely tightly. That painful experience was one of the reasons I started doing extensive research. One of the reasons there's a gender gap in performance in sports is because women aren't encouraged to have stronger pectorals, given that it is impossible to have abs with breast fat simultaneously. Because when you exercise for muscles, you naturally lose breast fat. Same goes for men. Women are no different in this regard. I firmly believe, though, that women are worthy of muscles. That they shouldn't be shamed for aspiring for a fit body based on their genitals (or identities). I look at YT pictures of women with muscles before the creation of steroids and wonder why society shames women for being physically fit and deems strength as "manly" (even before steroids!). . . Why is this the case? Because salesmen, at the start of the 20th century (early 1900's), turned beauty into a currency through unnatural advertisements. A criminal history (read the "Beauty Myth" for more historical snippets). The beauty industry heaps up to $725 BILLION annually and a projected $937.1 billion by 2030 off of women's (and some men's) advertisment-induced self-doubt and self-hatred. That's why. Not only are disabilingly large breasts encouraged for salesmen's depraved sexual sadism, but also for their wallets. . . Why do we encourage those ideals? Why are we so passive? Because we were programmed from a young age to never question any of the standards we're given. It is easier to permanently mold the mind of a child to grow up internalizing unnatural beauty standards as normal. Like 97% of women (who say they have at least one negative thought about their body image every single day), I too was dissatisfied with my body, but I never asked myself what the original cause of this prevalent self-hatred was. I never questioned why I even follow those standards. Or where they actually came from. . . As we established, bigger breasts are made of fat cells, and according to Medical Daily, the body stores toxic chemicals in its fat cells. This means big breasts could be storing dangerous compounds such as mercury or chemicals found in pesticides and paints. To make matters worse, the more these chemicals are stored in the breast tissue, the more likely they are to be transferred into a woman’s breast milk and passed along to her newborn children. Not to mention that women (or men) with more breast fat suffer longer colds. This happens due to the excessive leptin hormone produced by the higher number of fat cells in larger breasts that weakens the body's immune system and makes it harder to fight off infections. (journal of Archives of Sexual Behaviour.) Not to mention that according to Healthline, breastfeeding is almost impossible for big-breasted women: "....However, having big boobs made breast-feeding extra difficult for me. In order for my daughter to get enough suction on my nipple, her face would get lost pushing against my breast tissue. The only way I could stop her from suffocating was to use my other hand to hold my breast upward against my body. Breast-feeding became a very uncomfortable experience between swollen nipples, engorged boobs, and feeding positions that made my body ache. One milk-filled breast weighed more than 8 pounds! That’s 16 pounds of boob that I’m carrying upright with my back. That was more than double the birth weight of my newborn daughter." Breasts can weigh up to 7 to 12 kilograms-the equivalent of carrying around two small turkeys or two newborn babies. Some breasts could weigh up to 56 pounds (25 kilograms). The larger the breasts, the more they move and the greater the discomfort. In one study, 56 percent of women suffered from breast pain when simply jogging. . But who or what are we carrying and encouraged to carry all this weight for?💔 Who are we celebrating this unnatural and unnecessary pain for?💔 And for whom do we hate fit bodies that nature blesses us with? . . . Now, here are the symptoms of breast implants (that are deliberately downplayed and concealed in "beauty" clinics): Direct symptoms of breast implants: • Implant leakage or ruptures • Deflations • Scar tissue Associated (long-term) symptoms of implants: • Back and shoulder pain • ALCL cancer (a type of immunity system cancer where lymphoma cells start uncontrollably surrounding the foreign body, that is, the silicon lump) • Near inability of breastfeeding (amplifying the risk of breast cancer) • Near impossibility of detecting breast cancer (Again, not only will you have to remove your whole breasts/milk glands when breast cancer progresses, but also your OVARIES) • memory loss • Harder time concentrating/brain fog • dry mouth and dry eyes • Joint pain • Chronic (breast) infections • Headaches • Chronic fatigue • Dizziness • Hair loss • Loss of sex drive • Chest pain • Autoimmune problems • Loss of nipple sensation (See: www.insider.com/breast-implant-side-effects-women... See: www.healthline.com/.../why-big-boobs-are-the-worst see: headtopics.com/.../i-m-terrified-my-saggy-boobs... See: www.dailymail.co.uk/.../Mother-twos-breast... , note that in the last link, the implants literally fell out of her chest hideously just like in this animation.). All of this information means that large breasts are only satisfactory for the one observing them, but very painful for the one that has to carry them. . Disturbingly, many women convince themselves that they're not doing this (painful surgery) for anyone, but "only for themselves." This seriously demonstrates that those women consent to harm that is simultaneously coerced AND voluntary. Here's the process: Findings: ‘Choosing’ Breast Implants:  First: Patriarchy + Neoliberal-Capitalism → Particular and limited construction of the female body.  Leading to second: Reification (Objectification) of the female body whereby the body is modified to attain conformity.  Leading to third: Decision - consenting to harm, simultaneously coerced and voluntary. . The Impact of Symbolic/media-based Violence and Breast Implantation on Women: * Uninformed Consent * Skewed Representations of Risk The symbolic and ‘hard’ violence enacted against women through breast implantation in neo-liberal capitalist patriarchal society can only be mitigated once it is named as such; violence against women. . . Anna Nicole Smith, a figure as notoriously beautiful as Marilyn Monroe, who used to live in extreme poverty before seeking monetized beauty as prostitution was her only way to feed her child, had a tragic story. Her breast implants caused her back pain that she had to take prescribed drugs to numb it down. Drugs that eventually killed her. And her unborn child. She wanted to remove the implants because of the pain, but the producers threatened they would stop filming her if she removed them and end her entire career. It's as if she was no longer human and only her implants were walking and talking. . That's how much the producers and viewers detached her own humanity from her.

In my case, I had a breast reduction because i’m a small woman, with a small back, and kinda skinny too (height: 152 cm - weight: 46 kg). They were too big for me, I was being sexualized by men at a young age and then the back pains started, I didn’t feel comfortable wearing certain types of clothes and my back hurt so much, so I got the surgery and my life changed. So, I agree that in most cases plastic surgery isn’t a feminist act, but it can be. Society told me that men love women with huge boobs and that I would be very popular with boys! So I felt, and still feel, that feminism helped me to take my decision. But I get the point of this video, just wanted to leave my personal experience to any girl here in the comments that might find this helpful! Sorry if I made any grammar mistakes! Like the other person said, your want of breast reduction was a medical reason (back pain), I also have large ones but no back pain but if I did id probably reduce them since it's not necessarily about the aesthetic of the breast but mainly the physical pain they caused (I get also reducing them for proportions but that still rolls into medical reason. If I remember correctly where I live has free healthcare and reason reduction can actually be free as it isn't always seen as cosmetic but medical and for general health

Sex work and plastic surgery by choice is a matter of privilege than an issue of feminism.

This is such an excellent point. Plus another thing that people love pointing out is that as long as women are straightforward about having plastic surgery, that it's fine because they're not pushing their look as "natural". But it's still such a problem because that plastic surgery look is now seen as the standard. And so many women will never be able to afford it and will forever feel flawed because of it. It's almost scary how much tons of surgery is not only now seen as normal, but praised as a better way to look than our natural selves.

@Ashley L You can still call yourself a feminist and not align with those ideologies. In fact, the people you're referring to aren't even actually feminists. They're performative activists. exactly! i was following someone on tiktok who talked a lot about colorism, feminism, and beauty standards. She had a really pretty nose bump but a while later i saw she got plastic surgery to have the “perfect” nose. She even made a video about how ugly her old nose was and how her new nose allowed her to be beautiful and confident. If it really makes you feel that much better about yourself go ahead i guess. It’s just so strange that people can act like they’re anti colorism anti misogyny icons and then turn around and reinforce the idea that you need a certain feature or a certain style of nose to feel confident and loved.

Nobody has to share your ideology. There are people who objectively see their ugly nose or that it does not match the rest of their face and decide to change it because they have the economic and psychological capabilities. I think this is about something that you don't like in the first place and since others have the ability to do it, it makes you mad in a way. But none of these figures owes you anything and does not have to take responsibility for what others may think. They as individuals do what they want. At the end of the day they are going to live with themselves for the rest of their lives and what better than living it in its best version. It is my honest opinion since we always have the other in sight instead of ourselves. If you really don't like it, change it and if you feel comfortable with it, live with it but without disempowering others decisions

Yes, as white women got their rights in their early 20th century to work and vote, men needed a new way to keep women opressed. The beauty standard became significantly harder to achieve in a hundred years than it did in previous generations. Some women now feel like they have to take 1-2hrs a day to become beautiful by doing their makeup and hair while men are not held to the same standard. Those 1-2hrs of time spent on getting ready stop women from doing other things that could help them with finances, resting or anything else worth doing instead of adhering to a made up standard of what men find beautiful

My opinion basically is, while it is important to give people freedom to do what they want with their body, it is just as important to question why they might want to do so in the first place. This is relevant especially to plastic surgery, as many people just use it to cover up their insecurities and match modern rigid beauty standards under claims of they're 'doing it for themselves'. Plastic surgery can really raise someone's confidence, but if conforming to the standard is what gave them confidence, I can't help but doubt their choice was really for themselves. Cosmetic surgery industry eats up the growing dissatisfaction of people (especially women) with their own looks and ends up often perpetuating the dissatisfaction. Plastic surgery in general is murky business, the industry, the reasons people get it, and how it affects other people too Thats all, thanks for reading

@@Char10tt3_ you weren’t asking me directly, but i think it can be. with certain sects of christianity, women are pushed to be traditional stay at home moms and i do think them taking on that roles stems from their religion encouraging that. outside of religion, if someone wanted to be a stay at home mom i think it feels less forced because the overarching society isn’t forcing that upon woman as much as they used to. when christianity is involved i feel like there’s more social pressure to act a certain way than there would be with a woman who’s not religious. i don’t know enough about islam to comment on that specific example. it is possible that some christian women do want to be stay at home mothers and be traditional, but it’s hard to deny that parts of them might also be conforming to what their religion wants and expects from them. this isn’t a complete black and white topic but regarding plastic surgery, i agree with the original comment.

Honestly, a lot of my insecurities come from women. We police ourselves so hard that men don't really have to anymore. I used to wear make up exclusively for myself as an alternative teen that loved make up and was a semi-professional face painter/make up artist. Then, I went to college, my style changed, and I just didn't have the time or money for it. I started only wearing make up for first dates, interviews/professional events, and parties. The only time I really wear make up or even shave now is when I go see family because I'd rather be spared the lecture about how the reason my mental health is shit is that I don't make myself "pretty" often enough and that is almost always coming from my mother. That's the other thing that irks me is that she gets the correlation completely backwards. She thinks that putting on a cute outfit and doing my hair is what improves my mental health instead of what it actually is: I put effort into my appearance when I'm already feeling good and have the time/energy to express myself and experiment with different looks, but often I can be in a good place and still be perfectly happy in yoga pants and a ponytail. It's all probably internalized misogyny at the end of the day, but women gatekeeping other women's feminity pisses me off so much. I can be butch and be happy and I can be femme and be happy, so fuck off

The part about men adhering to men’s constructed beauty standards is so true! If you look at celebrities and artists that girls/women actually enjoy, you’ll find it’s usually the _opposite_ of “masculine” types. Harry Styles, Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet, Thomas Brodie Sangster, literally any male K-Pop idol… This isn’t even a new phenomenon. Look back twenty years, and you’ll find Steve Morrissey, Prince, Elton John, David Bowie. Hell, look back fifty years - the point is, as long as female-gaze based media has been allowed to exist, our preferences have been clearly established as a pattern. We don’t want macho, tough men, we’ve always preferred sensitive, somewhat androgynous men who’re in touch with their emotions and feelings. The only reason the “soft boy” phenomenon has occurred recently is because more media aimed at female audiences is making a breakthrough - but it’s always existed, just in the recesses of womanhood. I’ve been curious about if girls genuinely age out of these preferences, or if our fantasy of finding a guy who could actually cater to our preferences is shattered, and we eventually conform to societal standards for male partners (which is, evidently, what men think women want). If you look at any story written by a male ensemble, aimed at other men, you find a very different story. Gun-toting, muscular, objectifying figures, or even highschool jocks, dominate the screen. I don’t know any girl my age who’s attracted to these kinds of guys, hence the lack of female interest in male-based cinema. Sure, some women undeniably love toned and muscular men - but there’s a huge audience (I’d say at least a few million, if stans have anything to say about it) who clearly have different romantic priorities that they can only satisfy with fictional men. And therein lies the problem - when men can’t pick up girls, it’s usually because they don’t know what women actually want, they know what men _think_ women want. Or, they’re just sexist. And then they turn to other men for help, and perpetuate the cycle all over again. Our society hasn’t taught men to even turn to women when they’re trying to appeal to us, which forces us to adjust our standards accordingly. But I doubt that’s going to happen with this next generation. And with the rise in unabashed female fanbases, who don’t allow boys/society to scare them away from their interests, I’m curious to see how male beauty standards may shift in the future. We’ve never had a voice to even express what we want from men, which is why they’re so clueless about women whereas we have mastered the art of catering to their preferences. And it’s honestly a good thing; “masculinity” is such constricting and limiting confines, that few men actually benefit from. Widening the scope of what’s considered attractive can benefit men and women, and destroy the gender barrier between expressing emotions. The only thing which will suffer is the patriarchal and powerful.

this is so true, except I would add that the "androgynous male" or "soft boy" is not necessarily the only alternative (to the hyper macho man) that "we" find attractive. Personally, I'm very partial to the nerd type and I'm sure there are as many interesting male aesthetics as there are men basically. A lot of actresses in their late 30s/40s have revealed that when casting for wife roles, they were told they were too old to play the role of the wife of a 50 year old man, or even a man their age. This age discrepancy is something that has always angered me. Men are allowed to age but women can’t. In the instances in Hollywood where you do see women around the same age or older than the men, that’s the exception, not the rule. I’m always strangely satisfied when the women are older than the men, whether it’s romance, action, whatever. And whenever it’s a cast of mostly men with the token woman, the men will likely be noticeably older and at least some will be allowed to be average or even below average-looking while the lone woman must always be in her 20s or early 30s at the most and gorgeous. I enjoy the show Criminal Minds and thought they’ve always done a good job with their female characters ever since the show’s inception, including having the main cast usually be split pretty evenly between women and men. The show recently ended after 15 seasons and the women have been allowed to age. I also thought it was nice how at least every time an actress had to be replaced for whatever reason, it was usually by another actress similar in age, not significantly younger. Except I heard that apparently around its 6th or 7th season, not one but two of the main actresses were let go partly or fully due to having “grown too old.” ??? They were in their freaking mid 30s and early 40s at that point, and some of the men on the show were already older than that! Luckily after angry fans petitioned, they were brought back on the show.

It's important to look at your own actions and choices critically. But try not to get toooooo wrapped up in whether you like to wear makeup or appear feminine bc of the male gaze or bc of your own preference. I think everybody is different and our experiences affect the way the male gaze affect us on an individual level. For me, I grew up during the 2000s and was brought up by the adults around me, as well as the media, that Paris Hilton was the worst woman in the world, that the "dumb blonde" trope was all too real and should be my worst nightmare, that I should want to be masculine but not, like, too masculine if you know what I mean. My mom used to let me play with Bratz dolls, but she would call them slutty and trashy. I think my family had good intentions and were also victims of the cruel way society treated women at that time, but it didn't make it any less damaging to me. Because of this, I fell for the "I'm not like other girls, girls who wear makeup look like clowns, I hate Megan Fox for no apparent reason" line of thinking SO HARD. I was taught to hate women who were too feminine, basically. It took me a while to unlearn these behaviors (lots of work though listening to others' experiences and reading feminist literature) now I love makeup and skirts and cute hair accessories! For me, I'm pushing back against an insanely harmful culture that still exists and that caused me to be so confused for so long. I don't think I'm free of the male gaze entirely, but I have reached a point where I'm pretty confident that my smokey eyes and winged eyeliner are a statement I'm making for myself and a form of self-expression, not for other people.

i have my instagram notifications turned off, so i just scroll a few minutes a day to see cute animals and maybe a cool house renovation or two. it helps a lot. if you aren't ready to completely remove yourself from it. i also deleted the facebook app off my phone, so i go on via the browser if/when i want to check something. it's done WONDERS for my mental health and wellbeing. i've started to dress and behave how i want and makes me feel comfortable. meaning, if i want to wear baggy linen shorts, i'm going to. why do i have to wear what is "in" on instagram when a) i'm not a teen, and b) my body isn't the same as what all those women advertising. my new self motto this spring/summer has been I JUST WANT TO BE COMFORTABLE. let me wear my big undies that aren't sexy, and my 2 sizes too big shirts, and let me be. best of luck to you! =)

(Possibly) controversial thought: you want to get a surgery because you feel you will be prettier after. Counter-thought would be (body positivity!): "you just need to accept your features and believe they are pretty the way they are now". And although that counter-thought is nice and can definitely work in some cases, it still relies heavily on the "prettiness". Like "you're pretty, you just don't see/know it!". It's nice but realistically there are people and there are certain features that are just NOT pretty. And that's ok. Why do we all have to be "pretty" no matter what? It's just less-harsh version of "women have to be hot/attractive". No, we don't. It's ok to just be ugly, have ugly features. The world doesn't spin around prettiness, being pretty is just one among a thousand things that you can be. Why do we put sooooooo much emphasis and importance on being pretty alone? And having only pretty features? Just chill. Ugliness exists and that's ok. And your nose exists to allow you to smell things, not to look pretty.

Well said! I'd also add that they do it to fell prettier, but according to who? There are ps trends, and they will change, so I don't believe that getting ps is a choise with internal roots. Okay, they do it to feel better, but two years from now if the opposite features become attractive, they will change themselves again, and say it's for themselves again. This is of course very generalized and not true for a lot of cases. (Sorry for bad english)

@wkt2506 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree that emphasis on looks is not something everyone want to aspire to and that should be more socially acceptable. But You don't seem to understand that "prettiness" is not a number you can count, its not a fact. Our current ideals of prettiness wherever we live, are the outcome of our thinking about prettiness, all the messages we've been given since we were born - as explained about the car advert. And those thoughts can change, they might be different in different countries, different social groups online, and they will change over time. Prettiness is not a factual quality, its a thought we all choose to believe in. What it means can evolve if we choose as well.

The internalized male gaze theory makes me think of how I was raised thinking God was always watching. God in the form of a heterosexual cisgender white man that has written a book with sexist and homophobic rules. As a little girl, that was the image I had in my head whenever I went to shower or even just sitting in class. Today as an adult I have no doubt that there’s no such man watching, at least not in the form of a God, but it’s true that it is so internalized I still find myself trying to adhere to the rules.

I think wearing graphic liner or colourful, fun makeup is more of a self-expressing tool than a full 'mask' mimicking features you wish you had. Like why the fuck can’t women just be allowed to be pretty for themselves and not men. You ever just dress up all nice and just stay home because it makes you feel good? You ever take selfie’s for yourself because you felt beautiful? Why can’t we go for beauty without it being assumed it’s for men? This just seems antifeminism. what people need to understand is that just because something a woman does isn't something that classifies as feminist doesn't mean that this woman is any less feminist. same as just because a woman does something "non-feminist" doesn't mean that she has to be excluded from feminism. people calling themselves feminist just often forget the core of feminism and try to spin it to fit their narrative or to "excuse" something they do.

Another thing to consider: beauty trends change quite rapidly. Huge lips are now considered very sexy, but when I was around 10-12 (I'm now 28) I remember people actually laughing at girls that had those big lips. Smaller "average" lips were the go-to. So if you want a plastic surgery ask yourself: will I still be totally happy with the result even if in 5 or 10 years that specific thing I got done will no longer be considered attractive?

Right, not only are we expected to conform to male standards, but we are expected to conform to constantly changing male standards - something which is impossible for the human body to do. In one of my gender studies classes I asked my prof “how do I know that I like wearing dresses because I like it or because I’ve been taught that women wear dresses when they want to look pretty?” and she basically said not to worry about it because you’ll drive yourself nuts trying to find that answer. We can’t pinpoint exactly what has influenced our preferences, and if it is the male gaze, how much that specifically has influenced our preferences. So the best thing we can do for ourselves is just like what we like when we like it 🤷‍♀️

I took the very expensive plunge and got a rhinoplasty about a year and a half ago, and even now my nose still hasn't fully healed so if you are seriously considering it be prepared for a fair bit of swelling before you see the final result. The healing process was, if I'm honest, quite a gruelling time for me body image-wise as I still didn't like my nose, even to this day I struggle; in other words it was better, but not *perfect*. I kept finding new things on my face I thought I needed to get tweaked cos I just couldn't sit with the fact that after this huge surgery I still didn't feel confident/beautiful. What I'm trying to say is that with these procedures it is an *extremely* slippery slope as this industry makes you feel that you should aspire to perfection and nothing less, but I can honestly say that the change I was looking for can not be 'bought', as corny as it sounds beauty is a state of mind, and the moment you feel you are enough and learn to accept yourself as you are, confidence will follow. No amount of surgery will do that for you. Also I personally find that subtle imperfections like your nose profile are beautiful! I sometimes find myself wishing I'd kept my original profile because I never actually had a problem with that, but these days the beauty industry advocates for a sort of very small, straight, 'boopable' nose, and once you're in that consultation room surgeons can begin to point out things that you were never aware of/insecure about that are 'wrong'. Thanks for covering this topic - there is just so much to unpack!

basically women can't win lol. If we don't fit into the beauty standard, we're judged. If we get plastic surgery to appeal to the beauty standard, we're judged. We can't even put on makeup without the possible concept of wearing it is for the sake of the male gaze. You really just gotta be born with the genes that fit into the beauty standard of your time period (that still changes anyways).

My only concern for these conversations is how it’ll affect me or anyone else as a trans femme person who had Facial Feminisation Surgery and TERFs just using these perfectly valid reasons as an excuse to further invalidate trans femme choices on the alterations they chose to have, most of the time to calm gender dysphoria. Also, I second irene ^ Yes, our choices to alter our bodies through plastic surgery stems from partriachy but tbh at the same time, some, if not, most of us especially trans femmes still doesn’t appease to the “male gaze” if that makes sense. All in all, fir me it’s literally the men/ pick mes that needs to rewire their perception on women, honestly, because as you mentioned it’s literally a lose/win situation for femmes

I live in South Korea, one of the plastic surgery capitals. Let me tell you, so many girls here are very insecure about their looks. There are plastic surgery advertisements everywhere you go here. Really, nothing about plastic surgery is empowering or feminist. For example, here, apparently, we need to weaken our calf muscles because it's not "pretty" to have "large" (normal-looking) calf muscles. They've been advertising those injections so hard recently. I wasn't even worried about my calf muscles until Korean society told me to be.

Thank you so much for this video!!! I was thinking about this trend for quite a long time and I came to some conclusions. People don’t live in a vacuum, with a help of social media we’re always surrounded by beauty standards that are inspired by the male gaze. Women who do ps are not doing it “for themselves”. They make their faces and bodies appeal to male gaze beauty standards because when you’re conventionally attractive, it’s a lot more easier to function in this patriarchal society that is ruled by men. Ps is not empowering, women just trying to success in society, and nobody could criticise them for this

I actually really like my nose from the front, but from the side profile it's a curved downwards. Which is the opposite of what is trendy rn with the upturned elf noses all over IG. But I always come back to realizing I still have a cute nose and I actually like that it is unique in a way. Also looking at other women with a similar nose shape and seeing how absolutely gorgeous they are and how it's one of their best features really helps me like mine.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with like those things as long as you aren’t doing it for men, which is really hard to find because most girls today do all these feminine things for men. You can’t deny that, which is why a lot of girls go against girly things because it’s a trap of patriarchy.

Not being feminine isn't internalized misogyny. You wouldn't call feminine men "internally misandrists" because it's literally just a style of gender expression. Also, some women feel empowered by not being feminine because they're throwing aside what's expected of them and their gender to express themselves. Yes, girls who hate feminine girls or who are "not like other girls" girls are internally misogynistic, but tomboy does not equal internally misogynistic.

So I’m thinking about your question of “why do women like adornment of themselves outside of the heteronormative male gaze” and I think it’s important to refer to Kristen Leo’s latest video about the ways in which the patriarchy changed traditional matriarchal customs and beauty standards by imposing minimalism and colonialism onto historical tribal women, and the erasure of women’s contributions to society and culture through their clothing and other creations. I think the Kristen Leo Video is called Minimalsm is Facism and it was like so on point and kinda mind-blowing to have her break it all down. Also some great tiktok creators calling out Gucci etc for racist ads featured in there. Check it out!! Feels relevant to this discussion!! And thank you for making videos!
