This movie is the purest form of Comic Book Movie. It is written like a 6 Issue Story Arc. It has the tone of a comic book, with all the logic and illogic of one. Do I love it? Yes. Do I think it’s the greatest movie of all time? No. Is it peak cinema? In some ways… yes.

The key to highly effective cheese is to make it feel spontaneous. The actors in this movie all feel like the cheese is their one hundred percent real emotional thoughts, opinions, and feelings, which makes the goofy stylized world around them feel authentic. That's why Marvel films are losing their magic: the writing is still hammed up for the audience to sell the concept, but the actors are in on the camera winking joke so nothing feels authentic, like it came from a real person in a real scenario, but rather from a performer or a comedian doing a bit - so when the drama comes it's like the audience is doing a triple axle 360 no scope back flip dolphin dive into a completely different movie with no seat belt.

This does make a lot of sense knowing how hands on the actor for green goblin William defoe in both far from home and spiderman 1 was trying to make his performance as attention grabbing as possible without taking away from the scene. Small things like laughing while peter is punching him rapidly is such a treat.

Spider-man 2 is one of my favorite films of all time and while the first one isn't as good I still love it a lot. so when I saw you made this video I almost had a heart attack. I wound up fast forwarding to the end just to hear your conclusion so when you said "yes" I was very relieved. Always happy to hear someone enjoys these movies. Yes they can be cheesy but they can also be very heartfelt and the comics themselves were pretty damn cheesy and silly so it's mainly a product of the source material they are dealing with.

I recently watched the Sam Raimi Spiderman Movies and it's honestly insane how much better they are than Marvel's current Spiderman incarnation. There's a weight to it. I really enjoy Spiderman 2, probably even more than Spiderman. But the Green Goblin is such an iconic villain that I can't help but love him more as the better foil to Peter than Doc Ock. I haven't watched Spiderman 3 but I might. Just some really great cinema.

There is a timelessness to these films that really helps. There are a lot of movies you can watch and just go "that was made in the early 2000's" based on their aesthetic and stylistic choices. Yes there are elements of this movie that feel like a product of their time, such as Macy Gray's cameo, but other aspects of it feel kind of "old timey hollywood" like the scene where Peter and MJ talk in the back yard.

We take a lot for granted about these films. Consider that besides one of two dc offerings, it was basically just power rangers. We weren’t warmed up to the concept yet as a culture, and the campy goofy side of spider-man 2002 represents the early acceptance of the tone of superhero films. Consider trying to adapt a story about a guy who wears spandex and beats up guys in latex, the camp in Spider-Man barely dips it’s toes into that level, but we haven’t quite figured out how to do the body armor that looks like the costume from the comics bit yet. It was either, it’s going to be campy, or you pull an X-men and just have them all wearing black leather.

To this day, this still one the best comic book adaptations It's clear that Raimi is comic book fan, and also Spider Man fan in how he took many elements from the classic Spider Man and still made a version that is unique and great introduction. HOWEVER, as much I love the film, it's not perfect, neither one my top 5 for 3 major flaws. 1) While many scenes are iconic the CGI, for me at least doesn't hold on nowadays. Every lookslike a cutscene from video game. This is something only got improve in the sequels. 2) I respect your opnion about Tobey Maguire, but he didn't convince me that much as Spider man. When he's Peter Parker, the shy lovable nerd, he's good, but when he's Spider man he lacks a few of Spidey trades, such as his sense of humor and his fun and joyfull personality (sure sometimes he tries to tell a joke, but are rare and most of the times it doesn't feel natural). Not saying that Spider man need to tell a joke every single time, but also he shouldn't just always be in silent or not making fun commentaries about his villains during the fights. 3) I feel the rivalry between Spider man Green Goblin wasn't done very well . I'm not saying that the Goblin was a bad character. He was great and William Dafoe nailed both Norman Osborn and the Green Goblin. However, I think the character lost it's purpose after his first battle with Spiderman. All the scenes where he tries to recruit Spider man, at least for me, made no sense since it's never clear for what Goblin is recruting spider man for. He doesn't have any plan. Until their first meeting, all Goblin wanted was to save his company, and he achives this goal after killing the general and the board members, so why he's going after spider man? I can guess he want people to be afraid of him but this is just the generic "crazy villain doing crazy thing because it's crazy" motivation. I think that Goblin's rivalry with Spider man would had worked better if the movie had Goblin killing the people who betrayed him one by one, and Spider man would constantly getting in his away, making Goblin becomes obsess with the hero.
@thefan9742 жыл бұрын
I disagree with you on the CGI. I think at the time it's use was pretty significant but looking back now it didn't actually use as much as I used to think ( especially compared to spider man 3). 90 percent of the fight scenes are in camera so they obviously hold up but even when it does use CGI, what comes to mind is the swinging scenes or crazy stunts like dodging the blades , the bridge sequence etc. and that stuff still looks as good as u could ask for. . There are a couple of shots in the homemade costume and time square scene which look a little overly animated or weightless but otherwise its fine in the rest of the film. Other thing is while I agree Toby didn't joke that much as spidey, I think he did best with what he was given and even then for me what matters is if it feels like he's having fun and in spider man 1 the most it feels like he's enjoying himself at least. It's not my favourite superhero film , that's dc territory, but still for me as good as when it was released.
