The back "Story of Ren" is as follows, he was getting very sick, went to Dr. after Dr. to try and figure out what was happening to his body. His immune system was virtually non existent and he started to get bouts of psychosis. He was bed ridden for a long time, and gave into the fear that his body was slowly dying and fading out. Turns out Ren was bit by a tick and had Lyme disease and it had gone misdiagnosed for so long he nearly died. He went to Canada to receive stem cell treatments and with the knowledge of what was going on he started to get better. So all these songs came from the darkest moments of his pain, agony and pure suffering and it resonates within so many of his followers, myself included. Not the actual disease, but the hope, the despair, his way of coping and self awareness. He took his pain and used art to make it beautiful
@NotThatMF6 күн бұрын
Let's not forget that he grew up making music. He was just a young kid making his own CDs and giving them away at music festivals that his parents took him to. It was always his dream to be a professional musician, and just after he signed a deal with Sony, he got sick. Just as his dream was starting to come to fruition, he became so ill that he couldn't even make music and was bedridden, unable to complete the requirements of his contract, and was therefore dropped. He was watching his dreams shatter and fall apart just as they were about to take off and couldn't do anything about it. But, he persevered.

@@NotThatMF he sure did. I JUST watched him relive the moment he found out that Sick Boi was #1. So it is through tears of joy as I am writing this. Imperfection can be a choice. Imperfection by choice invokes emotion and humanity because it touches our own humanity, as listeners; it is authenticity. Imperfection is powerful, it is beautiful, it is human, and “we must not forget we are human beings”.
@yonahgrossman73193 ай бұрын
True, and Ren often leaves vocal imperfections in, but his seeming not to hit that particular high note in the beginning isn't an imperfection. He slides on it exactly the same way when he repeats the phrase at the end. It's discordant on purpose. (I must admit, I thought he was off when I first heard it, until he replicated it exactly the second time at the end. And of course he could easily have pitch corrected it if it wasn't what he wanted.)

"There is beauty in imperfections" - Ren was a Busker and loves to do live one shot music videos. With live one shots imperfections happen and won't ever be as clean as a studio sung song lip synced in a video. But I think its something we have all come to love. It adds grit, and realness to his music videos. When you have a choice between a lyric video of Ren, or a live version, the live version is almost always better (Minus Money Game Part 2. In that one the Lyric Video is the one to react to).

what i love about this, is its actually true that some of the pills and medicines are just masks to the issue and dont really help. But because of the society we live in we find it much harder to go the holistic route. That makes this innervoice battle have so much power because both sides really have some valid points. its just finding a balance between the two because if you hide one, it will just pop up in actions subconsciously . Ren brings both to the forefront and lives it through his song. and OMG THAT HARMONY SINGING AT THE END I LOVE IT

And so is the "mistake" on the guitar after the first melody he plays in the intro and starts to diverge from the initial "classical" composition - he plays that same "mistake" in the "Live at KOKO" version. 👍 My guess is that the guitar (& vocal) intro is meant to symbolize the young artist he was before he went through the events he depicts where Dark Ren takes over - ("my therapist tells me I'm ill" - he's not very far into the effects of Lyme disease, when the doctors were telling him it was all in his head... because when he "comes back" after the Dark Ren sequence and is about to sing about hope, it becomes "and I've spent half my life ill" and we've joined Current-ish Day Ren with his current outlook on life as a dance) - and since he's obviously grown and changed as an artist since then, he adds those deliberate imperfections to symbolize where he was at in his art at that age.

Not in a selfish way at all but how it's helped so many people in so many ways. He saved my life when I heard this song. We all battle our inner demons. Sometimes we win, sometimes the demon wins. Ren taught his to play guitar, and did a duet with him instead.

Great comment.. its so true gor me I was so depressed and negative and this performance by Ren has helped me to kind of become friends with that inner demon and I have really come a long way in pulling myself out of that depressed state of mind now. I think it was this performance and all of his positive energy and also the positive energy of Harry Mack which is how I came to her reactions because she loves Harry for more than just his amazing talent. She loves his positive energy like I do and I just love her reaction because it's so genuine.

Oh sweet summer child, as one of RENs over 50’s fans, you are heading for an emotional, inspiring, insightful journey that’s going to open you up in the most delightful and disturbing ways possible. There are songs I have not been able to listen to, for example the Jenny, screech and Violet trilogy, as I am not emotionally ready. But the wonderful thing about REN as an artist is that he is so diverse. Last but not least welcome to the world of Ren 😊

Never subscribed faster at the end of a video: that was magical! Now I really can't wait to see how you respond -- intellectually and musically -- to everything else Ren has in store for you. Please continue on your journey -- I would love to see what you make of Ren's "Genesis", "How To Be Me (live)" from Ren and Chinchilla, or "Wade In The Water/Nina Simone/Trouble So Hard" from Ren with his band The Big Push. (Also, Harry Mack did a freestyle tribute to Ren; a treat perhaps best saved for when you're a little father down the Ren rabbit hole!)

A very interesting reaction. Ren fans know this song down to the smallest details, but you still pointed out some interesting aspects. If you go further into Ren's catalog, you will enter a world so diverse that I cannot imagine any disappointment on your part. I'm subscribing, I'll take a look at your catalog. You have a beautiful voice and your personality exudes sensitivity and empathy.Greetings from Poland😊

20:39 "There's beauty in imperfection" That summarizes a lot of what I get from this song and how it makes me feel; I like how he uses not just the lyrics, but the manner in which he performs and delivers the music to communicate that idea.

Hi Ren is filled with ingenious details. Here are a few: - It startsat 0:03‼When the wheelchair is rolled in, you can see the letters "LD" on the back of it, which could stand for Lyme disease, the cause of his health problems. - The font used for the title is called 'Impact'. How fitting. - The dissonance at the end of the dark sides part is achieved by using a tritone in the chord. An interval that's also known as the devil's interval. - The lines "Face to face with the beast, I will rise from the east..." are based on the Revelation.

My reading of Face to face with the beast is it is a reference to the challenge we face each day we live. The Sun rises from the east and settles on the ocean floor. So he is saying as he faces challenges each day, he will be like the sun, shining light through the day. He also references the moon when he says "the righteous surrender when standing in front of my solar eclipse." The moon representing night, or dark, or inner critic, or negativity in the duality he is expressing.

This was a very enjoyable reaction and analysis, and your voice is truly beautiful; I loved your "surprise." "Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar in December 2022. However, Ren's earliest recordings on KZbin are from his time in a band called "Trick The Fox," consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren's onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is "The Mash Up." Ren's trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master's class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren's Hip Hop/Rap style songs are worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; unfortunately, sexual innuendos are pervasive in hip-hop and rap, and Ren makes such references in several of his songs. Check out "The Hunger," "Genesis," "What You Want," "Losing It (FISHER rap retake)," "Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake)," "Life is Funny," "Love Music (Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4)," "Crucify Your Culture," "Power," "Hold On," his recent release, “Down On The Beat (feat. Viktus),” “Masochist,” his song “Halftime (Nas Retake),”and “Troubles,” just to name a few. Ren's collaborations with Chinchilla ("Chalk Outlines," "How to Be Me," "Sexual Healing," "One Dance/Drunk in Love") are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," "Diazepam," "Penitence," "Dear God," "Heretic," "Dominos," his "Freckled Angels" album, in particular his song "Fire," just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I, II & III) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren just released "Money Game Part III," and in my opinion, it is his best work to date. Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins ("Blind Eyed," "Earned It /Mans World / Falling," "Walking on the Moon/No Diggity," "Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin')," "Latch," "Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session)," "Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren)," "Improvising Around Stevie Wonder," "Live in the Streets of Brighton, UK," "What Went Wrong" Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash ("Humble," "Ocean"), Bibi ("Crutch," "Ahiahiaoha"), Molly McKinna ("Penitence"), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa ("French Song"), are all great. Last but not least, Ren's busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of "Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover)," which is simply beautiful. "The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. They are each incredibly gifted artists. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble So Hard," "War Pigs," "Roadhouse Blues," "My Generation," "Paint It Black," "An Englishman in New York," "Bongo Bong" are excellent. On "These Boots Are Made For Walking'/Satisfaction/Everybody," "Praise You" (Fatboy Slim Cover), and "What Kind Of Woman Is This," all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," "Swan Song," "Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Dignity," "Watch Out," and so many others are equally impressive. In 2023, Ren released "Sick Boi," "Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake)," which is another masterful work, "Illest Of Our Time," and "Animal Flow," which is out in two versions, a full-production music video, and a live, one-take acoustic version. Ren's release, "Su!cIde," is a sad, haunting, gut-wrenching tribute to Ren's friend Joe who took his own life. Ren’s follow-up to “Su!cIde,” "For Joe," is also sad and emotional, but strangely enough, it offers a sense of closure. Ren also premiered the official music video of his song “Murderer,” and followed it up with a newly recorded acoustic live version that is phenomenal and my favorite of the two versions. His releases, “Love Music Part 4,” “Masochist,” “Lost All Faith,” are from his album, "Sick Boi," which came out on October 13th, 2023; it made it to #1 on the UK Album Charts. Ren also released “Back on 74/Message in a Bottle (Live Retake),” “Fred Again Mashup,” as well as a number of Live acoustic versions of previously released songs, and “Bittersweet Symphony (Live)” just premiered August 26, 2024. I could list more, but this comment will likely get blocked by YT due to its length.

Ren is therapy for so many from one song he helps so many people open up in ways therapists struggle to do in person. First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about this song is it needs to be seen by every one even in schools after a certain age, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. I went through hell, bullied all through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, and to many issues in my life since then I am a recovering alcoholic 11 years clean I suffer PTSD and other health issues so the majority of bad days over good is high, if this bullying had been dealt with i may have had a reasonable life not the existence i have to deal with now
