47 years as an active para here. The only issue I've had with my shoulders was a bursitis from fall about 4 years ago. When scanned they found my rotator cuff and tendons were all fine, even after 43 years of hard use. The biggest issue I had recovering was mainly because I tried to nurse my shoulder for 6 months before I sought help, and by then I had so much imbalance, that it took 6 months of physio to put it right. So yes, I agree, it's not inevitable. Now at 67 years old and 47 years of pushing, I'm still going hard as ever. Almost 😏

Outstanding Ben! Thank you very much. I certainly know a little bit about how things can get worse by 'babying' my body. It was the totally wrong approach. Your videos are giving me so much benefit, thank you.

My absolute pleasure. I see so much information that is telling people to baby their shoulders when that is definitely the wrong approach. I understand it sounds like it makes sense but that's not how the body works. It adapts to the stimulus we give it.
@brin57

@@AdaptToPerform I suspect the idea of babying the shoulders could be a marketing ploy perpetuated by the power assist people, as I've never come across that concept before the last few years when they have become popular. That very notion was put to me in a sales pitch.

Im a wheelchair user but my shoulder injuries are mostly from throwing newspapers for many years and a cervical spine injury (i compensated with my shoulders). Physical therapy helped for 15 years until recently. Now i think its torn beyond PT. Im worried about being able to transfer myself after surgery

I've used a push chair and now a power chair for around 4 years each and ive had more shoulder injuries since moving to the power chair, i think it's because my shoulders get very little exercise compared to before. Not sure it's totally accurate to say push chairs are worse than power chairs for injuries.

Thank you! Much appreciated. Yeah, my crocheting doesn't help the situation, although it helps my brain! I'm currently on a self-imposed crocheting ban. Can you show me some exsrxises for impingement and what I should avoid please? x
@AdaptToPerform
@AdaptToPerform 7 ай бұрын
You can absolutely still do your crocheting just as long as you are exercising other muscles that aren't used as much. Mix up the movements maybe by just stopping every 15 mins to move a bit different and take a day off every so often to recover. Use the 3 step approach

Brilliant video Ben thank you for this, i currently have a rotator injury and really struggling with life and independence due to the pain. Are you planning on doing a video with exercises to help recover? I have been to physiotherapists but not sure they understand fully. And i have to admit i am scared to do anything with it as not want to make it worse but as your video explains it looks like i am by "babying it" 😒😒😒 I'm not sure what to do.
@AdaptToPerform

Yes absolutely. I have series of videos that currently going out showcasing the best exercises for each body part. Currently there's exercises for chest and shoulders. I have bicep exercises coming on the 6th of may. Tricep exercise is coming on the 3rd of June. back exercises coming on the 8th of July. Rotator cuff exercises are coming later in the year. Sorry it's not all out yet but I have a schedule to stick to. You can't get access right away by being a channel member, but I understand that's not an option for everyone. As I said in this video you need to work on the muscles that we're not using whilst pushing a wheelchair. So your back muscles, your biceps and your external rotator cuffs. What sort of equipment do you have access to? I can give you a few examples based on what you have
@craigyboy542

@@AdaptToPerform I can't say that i have access to much equipment really, i have a handcycle machine, dumb bells and TheraBand's I look forward to your videos and will have to look more at your channel, i understand that you have a "schedule to stick to" Did you mean i can get access my being a member?
@AdaptToPerform
@AdaptToPerform 7 ай бұрын
Well there's a lot we can do with just that small amount of equipment. I'd recommend doing some banned pull aparts with your therabands and maybe some dumbbells rows with your dumbbells (lean forwards with the dumbbells. Dangling down and pulling your elbows into your sides. Lifting the dumbbells off the ground Make sure you squeeze your shoulder blades every rep) I'm sorry that's not the best way to present the information. It's just the best I can do in the KZbin comments. I'll try and find some videos for you that can help in the meantime

Ben love the vid, but Ill be honest, I wasn’t a fan of the negative connotation of the usage of a power chair, some of us use the power chair as the optimal form of movement and independence. I’m still a fan, cheers!
@AdaptToPerform
@AdaptToPerform 7 ай бұрын
I'm not suggesting in the slightest that using a power chair is a negative situation and I'm sorry if it came across that way. My intention was to suggest that with the methods used those who have a choice can still have that choice rather than have it chosen for them. I'll make sure that's clearer in the future 👍
@alimoore589
@alimoore589 7 ай бұрын
I used to think it was a negative because I was brought up to think the ability to be physically active somehow reflected my value as a person. I've changed a lot (for the better) as I've got older. Quality of life, including a lack of pain, is key. I'm currently waiting to get the postural support on my powerchair adjusted because it hurts. Being unable to use it for long has made me miserable.
