Is Sonic A Dragon Ball Rip-Off...?

Within this video I discuss the incredible similarities between Dragon Ball and Sonic and discuss some of the biggest things Sega might have taken heavy inspiration on. I also discuss the long running argument of people calling sonic the hedgehog and Dragon ball rip-off and explain why I think that's not true and how both are great series and both can co exist! @@nsplayer4970 Exactly, and Shigeru Miyamoto even admitted in an interview that the 1985 SMB1 was inspired by PAC-Land, but you don’t hear people calling Mario a rip-off of PAC-Man. I love both Sonic and DBZ, but I hate it when people call Sonic a rip-off of the anime. Obviously some elements took inspiration from DBZ, but EVERYTHING has taken inspiration from another piece of media. And I forgot to mention that the design for Super Saiyan was based off of Sun Wukong.

Haha thanks. Also, the number 7 is a very spiritual number, especially in Asian culture. There’s plenty of media that also focuses on 7 mystical objects such as the 7 millennium items in Yu-Gi-Oh and the 7 horcruxes in Harry Potter. And the 7 Dragon Balls were probably inspired by the 7 deadly sins from the Bible which of course existed LONG before Dragon Ball.

Super Sonic canonically has taken zero damage in any of his fights other than with Dark Gaia in Sonic Unleashed, and that is because it was specifically stated that Dark Gaia's powers are a direct counter to the Chaos Emeralds

Sonic and Goku aren't the same. While yes they're both fun loving and caring, Goku wants to constantly get stronger through fighting while Sonic doesn't really care about fighting at all unless it's a bad guy, he prefers to go on adventures and see the whole world for what it's worth before he eventually dies Shadow and Vegeta are not alike. The reason Shadow calls himself the ultimate lifeform is because he was specifically created for that purpose. It's not some random title he gave himself. On top of that Sonic and Shadow aren't even rivals anymore. Shadow mostly doesn't give a shit about Sonic and barely interacts with him so idk how you got the idea that they were rivals. On top of that Shadow is literally completely fine with listening to others now, idk where you got the idea he didn't like doing that. The creators themselves said they took inspiration from Mewtwo and if you actually paid attention to the story you would be able to see this. Shadow was never evil, GUN killed the only family he had left and through a misunderstanding of his sister's dying wish he wanted to the destroy the world. That was until he came to understand what Maria truly wanted, she wanted him to protect the world and forgive them of what they had done to both of them. At first Shadow only protects the world out of his promise to Maria but eventually he finds people that he genuinely cares about(Rouge, Omega) and starts protecting the world of his own volition. Super Sonic and Super Saiyan look similar but work completely different. A super form can be used by anyone with a connection to the emeralds, not just a hedghog. The powers from a Super form can be shared with other people who can't access it themselves. On top of that Super forms grant the weilder reality warping(yes Sonic can do it, it's just that most of the time when he goes Super the people he fights are on his level of power or just outright have a power to negate the chaos emeralds like Dark Gaia so he doesn't use it in battle much) The Chaos Emeralds originally started as 6 and on top of that they work completely different. The chaos emeralds can warp reality along with give power to the user or be used to power a machine. On top of that if you don't have a special machine to harness they're powers you can't use them unless you have an affinity for their energy. It's why Tails can't go Super. With the dragon balls if you wanted to go back in time you needed to make a wish but with the Chaos emeralds all you need to do is gather 2 emeralds and have an affinity for their energy and boom you got time travel Silver is not future Trunks. Yes they both came from a destroyed future but that tropes happened before already. Silver went back in time and had been tricked by Mephiles into attempting to kill Sonic due to him believing Sonic to be the cause of the world ending, Trunks went back in time and immediately looked for the aid of Goku in order to save the future. Also no Shadow is not Silver's dad, please stop Eggman came before Dr Gero LMAOOOOOO Knuckels is not Picollo bro. Knuckles was never a bad guy, he was tricked by Eggman into believing that Sonic was the bad guy, which is why the fought at first. Picollo started off evil, Knuckles didn't

Also for a comparison of the master emarlad if you watch og dragonball you will find that the seven dragonball s weren’t always seven and that goes for the seven chaos emeralds the dragonball were at first giant dragonball but split into seven to prevent evil doers from getting their hands on it and the seven choas emarlds were created from the master emerald to keep the master emerald under control and so the master emerald can keep the choas emarlds in control so they can keep the balance. I´m in the Sonic Franchise since the Mega Drive days about 1991/92. Even I was surprised to find aut that the Super Saiyan was an inspiration for Super Sonic and Super Forms. But this inspiration, brought the Sonic Formula to perfection and gave the franchise endless possibilities for games and all other media. My wish was always a Crossover-Game between Sonic and the DB(Z) franchises. But sadly because Toriyama is gone now, who knows, if this game will ever be. Sonic was never a Dragon Ball Rip-Off for me. I see only a great co-existence.

Great video! I think Shadow the Hedgehog is more like Android 17 than Vegeta. Both Shadow and Android 17 are calm, composed, and often act as anti-heroes with a strong sense of justice. Vegeta is more prideful and has a complex background, which makes his journey from antagonist to ally interesting, but Shadow and Android 17 share more similarities in their demeanor and roles

1. The only things identical between Super Sonic and Super Sayan Goku are the hair spiking up, changing to a golden color and being a massive power boost. Other than that, they’re different in every possible way. 2. UI Goku is obviously taken from ultra Sonic from the Archie comics. I mean, both are forms that make the character look like they’re in their base form while being their strongest form and it being called Ultra. Plus, one could argue MUI Goku takes inspiration from Hyper Sonic. I mean, both are upgrades to their respective normal ultra forms, plus they’re become white and are basically undefeatable. 3. That sounds NOTHING like Dragonball. The seven Dragon Balls allow you to summon the Eternal Dragon, whose power is said to able to grant any wish. However, most wishes in the verse are, in Shenron's own words, "beyond his power to grant." This would make Shenron at least planetary but not much else. I don't count the Super Dragon Balls because those are ass pull of the highest order. Even if we were to count them, it still wouldn't hold up to the Emerald's power as having even one can warp the fabric of time and space. Those who can use them say they can "turn thoughts into power." The Emerald's power is shown to, at the time of this writing: I. Control time to a minor and major degree. II. Grant multiversal power (see Solaris and Erazr Djinn). and that's not even counting the fact that we haven't seen a true cap to their power. III. Grant permanent power increase. The best example is when Sonic was able to defeat Perfect Chaos in base during the events of Generations whereas in Sonic Adventure, he needed Super Sonic. IV. Bring back the dead WITHOUT a cap. Emeralds aside, all that Sonic is truly about at it's heart is one thing. Going really, R E A L L Y fast. Meanwhile, all Dragonball's really about is getting stronger continuously. People have likened Sonic to Dragonball because Sonic gets a Super Form which is funny because, again, at the time of writing, Sonic and his friends can only go Super WITH the Emeralds. Meanwhile, Goku collects powerups like nineties kids collect Tamagachis. They are nothing alike and everyone who says they are just doesn't know about each of those series.

It is undeniable that the sonic franchise takes from dragon ball its practically shameless in concept but its really the point of contention is Sega themselves making stupid mandates and trying to hide from its golden hair roots if you want proof ask the original storyboard and character design Naoto Ohshima for the series the super and tournament arc back in 1990s inspired not only super sonic but sonic 2 as a whole along with star-wars with the death egg sonic may not be holy original but it dose everything in its own style. once again its Sega that makes this a point of debate not accepting sonic as shonen character, but contradicting itself by stoping comic book writers from writing shadow as not a vegeta clone.
