Is Sonic Frontiers the THIRD Storybook Series Game?

Unfortunately, The Sonic Storybook trilogy was cut down to just two games. However, I think there's a possibility that Sonic Frontiers could be the lost third storybook game. Let's discuss this in today's video!

I always headcanon'd Sonic Chronicles on the DS as the last Storybook game. It came out around the same time and also features a strange plot and gameplay compared to the main series. I also just don't know where else to place Chronicles in the "Timeline" lol

I'm quite surprised Sonic and the Black Knight is getting a lot of attention, When it comes to Frontiers, I always thought it was what Sonic adventure 3 would look like. What I love about Frontiers is the soap shoes, ripped straight out of Sonic adventure 2 and it was really cool!

My own personal take (it may not be true gameplay-wise though): I think a more likely candidate for a third storybook game would be The Murder of Sonic because: - Game's Story is based on "Murder on the Orient Express" - The Visual Novel nature of it could be seen as akin to the cutscenes in storybook with the characters even having "comic bubble" textures. - While not likely, it's possible the characters are dressed up in accordance to characters in Orient Express and/or have parallel characters. - The game does have some "traditional-esque" gameplay segments where you play as Sonic in a game akin to SegaSonic the Hedgehog (Think Minigames) I can't outright confirm this as I've never read/watched "murder on the orient express" but even I kind of picked up on the parallels given how similar the plots are (Murder happens on train, now the people inside have to find the Murderer. Only difference being that the others think it's a game but Barry [MC] suspect it to be actually real where as in Orient it was likely real from the start.) So take this with a grain of salt but that's my personal headcannon.

One of the first dialogue lines in Frontiers is actually a secret rings reference i think.The one where Sonic says "key? Sure beats being called a rodent" may or may not be a reference to Erazor Djinn calling him a rat over and over.

It is to me! The Cyberspace stages even have that same stiffness. I'd argue the Koco and Titan Pilots are the Storybook Counterparts to Sonic's friends(I'd argue Master King is Eggman's counterpart), not to mention the characters themselves being holographic. And there's that aesthetic in the flashbacks being reminiscent of the Storybook Cutscenes. And with Final Horizon, the final boss includes a New Form(though I'd personally redesign Super Sonic 2 to be orange). I'd even argue the lack of isekai-ing fits. Secret Rings was open about the Storybook element. It even starts with Sonic flying into the book(cyberspace portal at the start of Frontiers?), but in Black Knight the "this is inside a living book" is toned down significantly, and the lines about "story" could easily be replaced with Destiny. It's part of why I don't consider Sonic 06 to be Adventure 3. The cut aspects being cut are also part of the formula. 06 had a hub world with Soleanna when SA2 scrapped a hub world altogether. 06 featured Shadow in the story while in SA2 Chaos was only called back to in multiplayer and implications. SA2 had 6 characters like SA1, but the playstyles were cut from 6 to 3. 06 works very differently there.

I will say these are my three favorite games of the franchise and top 3 favorite video games of the franchise the gameplay, story, characters and music were all iconic to me plus my favorite bosses and characterization of Sonic The Hedgehog ever another amazing video:)

One thing I think is worth mentioning here is Frontiers DOES have storybook-esque cutscenes. Or, at least, one of them. When Sonic and Tails receive that vision on Chaos Island of the artillery shooting up into the sky at The End and then witnessing the resulting destruction, it’s animated exactly like the Storybook games’ cutscenes. Yeah, it was probably done simply to save on budget costs, but it has a striking similarity that’s always stuck out to me. Also I will forever stand by the fact that Secret Rings is one of the best games in the franchise in everything EXCEPT the controls. The vibes are immaculate, the upgrade system is cool, the levels are all unique and have some really really awesome ideas (ghost ship??? ancient crypt full of skeletons?? hello???) and the OST is one of the best in the series imo. It just sucks how bad the controls are. Rip.

I really like this idea. It makes the storybook music added in more fitting I sometimes question if the games are actually spin-offs since Frontiers and Smash have them among the other main series games that bring music. Sonic and the Secret Rings was my first Sonic games (aside from the Mario Olympic Crossovers that were my gateway), and I'm always happy when I find some love for it. I don't think there actually were plans for a 3rd storybook game. I remember reading this was only a "Just for Fun" poll. The series nickname actually only existed on the Black Knight American box. It was nowhere to be found on thr Japanese or European boxes. I think Sega just wanted to give Secret Rings a spiritual successor.

I have such a soft spot for the Secret Rings, yeah it had a lot of problems but it’s one of the few sonic games I’ve finished And to hell with the people who think the multiplayer was garbage, that was some of the most fun I’ve had it was one of the few times my siblings joined and we all had a blast and they aren’t even gamers

i would argue that the Sonic Prime TV show is the 3rd storybook game. • people that look like sonic's friends that dont recognize him. • sonic getting new clothing/gear that is based on the new world he is in. • sonic being a fish out of water and being a stranger to a new world where nobody knows him. • a self contained story that doesnt affect anything outside of it. (inside books, inside shatterspaces).

Sonic’s characterisation is one of the worsts there and the two storybook games have one of the best characterisations and sonic frontiers matches the storybook characterisation too. 2.
