As a retired A/V tech and a qualified calibrator for both audio and video after obtaining my qualifications the one thing the struck me was that here in the UK i was part of a very small number of techs with those skills. The shop that i worked for did offer full home cinema installations, but despite the high cost of them, only a few wanted calibration as part of the deal. This might seem crazy, but it was true, so despite all my skills and expensive gear it never paid for it'self. Perhaps the sheer number of A/V enthusiasts in the USA that want calibration might have given me a different experience.

I can only agree, these calibrations are aimed at perfectionists that will pay anything that makes them think they have a system that performs at it's best. In reality all that is often required are a few tweaks to the factory settings with brands such as Sony. The cheaper brands leave the factory with overbright and saturated settings to give an impressive out of the box experience, anyone can change them. @@dhruvb38

This was an awesome video, great questions and even better answers! Some things about calibration that I've come to realize as I've done more of them and gotten feedback from a huge variety of people: 1) Calibration is always great when it comes to color accuracy, everyone I've showed a calibrated display to says the colors look so much better. 2) Most people don't like D65 white point. I know it's the standard and if you want to experience content as the director intended than D65 is the way to go, but if you have a calibrator come out I'd highly suggest getting a D65 profile and a D75 profile. 3) isf recommends a gamma of 2.4, but 2.4 gamma requires a high contrast display (3500:1 or better in my opinion) and a batcave to enjoy. If you're having a calibrator come out make sure to get a 2.4 profile and a 2.2. I also like a 1.8 gamma profile for watching with the lights on. 4) You mentioned the equipment cost of display calibration, but it's important to make sure your calibrator has the correct equipment to calibrate your display. A few months ago I tried to calibrate a tri-laser projector using my Portrait C6 colorimeter and the results were awful. The newer light sources require super high resolution meters, I ended up getting a JETI 1501 HiRes and the results were night and day different from my C6.

Video calibration is all about objective measurements. The quality of a TV is all about its comparison to a reference mastering monitor. With audio systems, there is no measurement of a listener's preferred sound quality. As a result, audio calibration and set-up is an art form. Not just a deviation from a professionally agreed-upon standard as video quality is.
@alphalunamare9 ай бұрын
Bollux! Peoples response to video is entirely subjective. Video calibration is scientificall based and entirely unsubjective. The problem is in those who view the end results with their quite naturally self born uncalibrated sensory systems. Calibrating sound is akin to standing up straight, calibrating colour is like doing gymanstics. I'll be honest and reflect that I have only ever heard your point of view from people who work on Apple Macs and think it is all pointelss in the first place. You are correct about objective measurements because that is what Science is all about even if people don't like the results due to some life long exposure to bad colour and sound.

I use this set up with a Marantz 8015. Auro 13.1 config. To my surprise the lower center is the only one that handles speech. The upper one handles atmospheric effects only. Not sure how Sony handles it though. Having lower and upper center speakers both handling speech is actually not recommended, at least by Auro. This is called having a split center. Apparently such a config can cause phase cancellation issues if the speakers are playing the same sounds. Too bad, I thought it they would create a phantom center located mid-screen. How I deal with the issue is to have my tv lined up so my eye level is 1/3 of tv screen height. Then place center speaker 1/2" below the screen and tilt it upward directly to my ear level. It sounds very close to perfect. Also my A80J can be used as the center (screen itself is the speaker). I don't use this though as the tv's sound is nowhere near the performance level of my center channel (Focal Chora). My advice to anyone considering a 2nd center speaker (height) is that it may not work the way you hoped, is generally a bit difficult to set up and probably only makes sense with a 12 channel set up and above.

I think the reason for all of the green in the visible spectrum chart is because that spectrum runs between 400 and 700 nanometers (nm). Green is in roughly the middle of this spectrum at about 500 nm making it supposedly the easiest color for the human eye to detect. This is the reason they started painting emergency vehicles in that yellow-green color and also because it's more visible to humans in low-light conditions than the traditional red paint. That's my take anyway. Hope that helps.

I think the whole 'Sony ditching OLED in favour of mini LED' highlights the problem of click bait titles for KZbin videos. Sure, there's a lot of channels dealing with the same subject matter all clambering for views, but it's always super annoying when you see a title, watch the video and then realise you've been click baited. Vincent generally doesn't go down that path and his video does make sense in context to the title, but still, I must admit the title for that video was slightly click bait-ish (it was even accompanied by the stereotypical shocked facepalm expression thumbnail). Whenever I see video titles that include things like "The ONE thing no one tells you..." or "This is the END for..." or "The REAL truth about..." and/or see the above mentioned stereotypical facepalm/shocked expression thumbnail, I steer well clear. Those titles and thumbnails are designed purely for clicks and most of the time the content is not relevant to the title. There is a certain 'well regarded' tech KZbinr out there who used to work for a reputable tech media outlet who's channel I've recently blocked due to his blatant click bait video titles.

While I can't deny that OLED is the best looking TV tech, I decided to go with a TCL QM8 mini LED for my other room instead of OLED. It's surprisingly close to OLED actually, not the same obviously, but the blacks get super dark like OLED with only minimal blooming, and it's super bright. When companies like Sony say "Flagship" internally, they simply mean the product that is getting the most focus, resources, and/or biggest marketing push thrown at it. So that makes total sense what Caleb is describing at the end where the Sony OLED is no longer Sony's main focus because it's already SO DAMN GOOD that there's basically nothing else to do with it for a while. Sony is now shifting their internal focus on raising up their MiniLED line. Sony is not discontinuing their OLED line.

I would think the the most universal (not least expensive, but highly adaptable) way to handle the center channel would he to have a higher and lower center and matrix them to fill the screen space.
@jbones145310 ай бұрын
If you have an extra large tv and truly care about the center speaker being above or below it, can’t you just do both with two speakers and it would create a phantom center between them? I personally am fine with my center being below but I feel like this could solve the issue for others who aren’t.

Can you comment on setting up without a center channel speaker? If you have speakers that image very well alreasy, couldn't you generate a solid phantom center already?

Dual centers are the best way to go for large screens. The Sony 98X90L also uses the audio to anchor the center to the screen using Center Sync when paired with a Sony ES AVR.
@PAPO199010 ай бұрын
There's actually a few solutions for the centre channel with large screens, the high end Sony OLED's turn the entire surface of the screen into a speaker. But there is also the more complicated option of having 2 centre speakers, one above, and one bellow the screen, with decent calibration and setup, this can create a "virtual speaker" right in the middle of the screen. Also I would 100% say a BASIC audio calibration is WAY easier than video... I know it's not perfect, but most decent amps now have a built in calibration routine and come with a microphone, even the worst of them these days are pretty good, and if you know what you are doing it's pretty easy to make minor tweaks from there to suit your tastes. Lastly, Sony has 100% done that before and dropped the mic without replacing their best model, the HX900, HX925, and HX950 were all amazing TV's, but after the HX950 Sony didn't make another Full Array backlit model for a good few years.

Split center channels are not recommended at least by Auro 3D. Phase cancellations playing same content over both speakers, particularly evident with speech.
@PAPO199010 ай бұрын
@@bearclaw5115 those phase cancellations can be accounted for, it’s not necessarily ideal, but it is one possible solution if you really can’t stand your centre being too low or high relative to screen center
@TheHifiguru10 ай бұрын

3:23 This is where beamforming technologies like Dolby FlexConnect can help--by using complicated math to drive your speakers, your audio system should be able to make it sound like center channel audio is coming from the screen even if it isn't. As large format displays become more common, we'll likely see audio manufacturers adopting this technology, and I'm betting that in the very near future, this will be a non-issue.
@alxking190110 ай бұрын
My solution that works for my 120 in UST screen is the HT-A9. Phantom front and rear center channels and phantom ATMOS that works pretty darn well (for me). I’ll save my 7.2.4 Klipsch setup for my 77in OLED.
@brenteilert258410 ай бұрын
I have a 11.1 Atmos system and a non-acoustically transparent 120" screen. I noticed you never mentioned a phantom center channel as an option. I sometimes take my center speaker out of the equation and I think it sounds really good. I know I have to sit in in front of the center of the screen but for me, I think it puts perceived sounds where they should be better then my center channel dose at the bottom of my screen. I don't have seating far to any side of my small theater/living room anyway. I would like to know your thoughts.

The whole Sony quitting OLED was started by a clickbait video by Vincent Teoh.
@Scan4ness6910 ай бұрын
Please watch Vincent’s video as Caleb pointed out. He makes a good point about how it’s cheaper for Sony to “perfect” their mini-led technology while being able to price these TV’s a cheaper price to begin with. It’s a profit margin thing, really… The fact that they’re working soooo hard to perfect this technology tells me this is the first step to phasing out Oleds in the near future.. Until Micro-led’s become available and kind of affordable, i ll stick with my Oled TV’s..

I don't have that issue of where to have a center channel. My phantom center image is better than having a dedicated center. I also don't run surround sound. 2 speakers and 2 subs is all I need. More money to put into quality components, speakers, and room correction vs running speakers all over the room cutting into your budget. I don't miss multi-channel.
@stevenlawrence223210 ай бұрын
On the projector front, depending on the screen itself, you can put a retractable screen away (and let a conventional tv live behind it). You put a tv away by moving it to another room lol.
@Too-Odd10 ай бұрын
If you put a center channel speaker both above and below the screen, the human brain will place the sound virtually in the center of the screen. Just make sure your amp can do this and has the ohms load capacity to drive both center channel speakers. Placing speakers on both sides does the same thing, but with screens that big, the setup may not have a wide sweet spot for the viewers at the sitting distance desired.

On the screen-too-big-for-speakers issue (projector in my case), I just have my center speaker literally laying on the floor, firing up along the wall. So the sound is bouncing against it, and firing toward me. Some tweaking to bring it and front stereo speakers to balance, and done!
@brNL_sp10 ай бұрын
The issue with hitting those far greens is also energy consumption. If you had a high-powered laser display you could probably hit all the greens you wanted, but I believe the EU actually forbids screens that use that much power, so they can't manufacture millions of TV's using that much power simultaneously when everyone is home at night. Those greens are probably not easily found in the "real world", so there's not much need anyway for those colors to be achieved in most videos, let alone displayed. If they make more efficient LED's or another kind of tech that uses way less power, we might see huge gamuts out there in the future.

Regarding the problem of vertical center speaker centering: you can use 2 center speakers - one below and one above your screen. Feeding them the same signal for active soundbars would be quite simpel, for passive you would need a ab receiver that would allow to use the center signal twice. That setup is used with some LED wall installation (eg. VW „Autostadt“ cinema) as those have often a closed cabinet meaning no speaker can be placed behind like in standard Cinema. This solution isn’t cheap but if spur going for that quality, there is a way to do it

But I wanted to ask you, was there ever a time when HDR was not great to bad? I have a LG 55ef9500, and when watching 5k, which the TV is, it forced HDR and the image was very dim. There was no way I could find to fix it so i watched 1080 since then. Do you know if newer tvs also seem extremely dim compared to older ones in HDR? and have you ever tried this model and noticed the same issue?
