Tear had the potential to be a savior for the format. A great deck that wasn’t about absolutely shutting down your opponent. But simply making a better board. I love Distant Coder's take on the best tier 0 formats being the ones with the highest number of variants because I enjoy deckbuilding much more than I do actually playing Yugioh and trying to inject your own unique flavor into a deck is something that I've always enjoyed
@itsmetristan3671
@itsmetristan3671 Жыл бұрын
Well the issue with that take is that it's only happened one time in the history of the TCG, so saying varied tier 0 formats are straight up better doesn't have a solid basis because there aren't enough examples of them.
@dontmisunderstand6041
@dontmisunderstand6041 Жыл бұрын
Building a deck is 70% of any TCG. If you like the so-called "tier 0 formats" you just don't like TCGs in concept. You would rather play a different type of game. And that's fine, until you start suggesting that it's healthier for a TCG to be that different type of game instead.
@itsmetristan3671
@itsmetristan3671 Жыл бұрын
@@dontmisunderstand6041 That's just fundamentally wrong. The low variance in decklists during a tier 0 format actually puts both players at more of an even playing field, putting a much higher emphasis on skill. The deckbuilding aspect of the game is hurt for sure, but the gameplay is elevated to make up for it. There are, and have been tier 0 decks that have awful mirrors however, and those are the truly bad ones (think Spyral and PePe for example). When the deck however has an excellent, interactive, skillful mirror, it is some of the most fun and competitively enjoyable gameplay you can get (Nekroz, Tele-DAD, Zoodiac, Tear). Even in these formats decklists can, and do vary. People try different ratios, different techs, side options, etc. Some take completely different approaches to the deck. It's understandable for players to dislike the lack of deck variance from a deckbuilding perspective, especially when it comes to the more casual crowd, but this whole "you don't like TCG's in concept if you like tier 0 formats because there's virtually no deckbuilding skill required" is just wrong.
@munchrai6396
@munchrai6396 Жыл бұрын
@@itsmetristan3671 That's a fair point, Zoodiac is easily my favorite Tier 0 format for that variety alone, but I get that it's not that easy to replicate when most decks are complex enough that there's only so many ways you can solve it optimally
@dontmisunderstand6041
@dontmisunderstand6041 Жыл бұрын
@@itsmetristan3671 Deckbuilding IS the skill of a TCG. By the nature of the genre. The skill it takes to become a mediocre deckbuilder far surpasses the skill required to become the best deck pilot in the history of the game. That's necessarily true by design. To be a perfect pilot, you only need to know about your deck and its weaknesses. To be an above average deckbuilder, you have to be able to consider every possible interaction, every possible deck, as well as having a firm grasp of probability and statistics. Not every pilot has the skills of a deckbuilder. Every deckbuilder has all of the skills of a pilot. The venn diagram is a donut. This isn't a debate or an opinion. It's a necessarily true statement. I'm sorry that you didn't understand what was being said, I hope this clarification helps.

May I suggest an opinion? I think you should add like a rule on the beginning, maybe a 1 or 2 minute intro telling the rules because as a new viewer, I thought every opinions was legit then suddenly, a plot twist in the middle of "someone is saying wrong." and I'm like, "what's wrong when someone has their own opinion?" I only caught on the "game" around 8 mins in when I think about "Why is this called Magical Hats when they are not talking about Magical Hats?" TLDR: 1-2 mins instruction/rules at the start which is helpful for new viewers. One good example I would say is, however much annoying to watch it over and over again, "Team Samurai X1" is I think the name of the YGO channel. Check their latest duel night. The intro is good and even if you're new to yugioh, you would know the "new" rules in that video. All in all, I like the commentary besides the issue I had in the beginning. I also think Tier 0 is unfun. I'm okay with zoo or nekroz era because there's a way to counter it even if you're using not a meta deck. I remember winning against nekroz with my Fire Kings and I don't think I can do that with Ishuzu Tear. Unless you play ishuzu tear, you will never win against ishuzu tear which is dumb in my opinion.

I don't object to the existence of Tier 0 formats. In a non-rotating TCG like Yugioh, it's an inevitability. The problem is that even at a local level, many players are ridiculous competitive about their deckbuilding which makes it difficult to pilot niche lists to their fullest potential, especially in a meta full of easily accessible ED omni-negates and hand traps. This is only exacerbated by these lists usually pricing people out of the game (this is precisely why we all love reprints of meta staples included in already _playable_ three-of structure decks because it lowers the monetary barrier of entry for new players and lets them play with a reasonably competent list with little investment) Now I enjoy brewing up consistent and resilient lists as much as the next guy, but formats with only two or three top-tier decks become stale very quickly. Formats with one clear top-tier deck and little to no reliable counterplay or anti-meta potential are fundamentally unenjoyable. But the problem has never been the formats themselves -- it's encountering the competitive mentality at what should be inviting, welcoming and casually oriented local game stores where the game is supposed to be played for fun. There is nothing fun about encountering a paywalled Tier 0 deck in an environment where most players prefer fringe and rogue lists. So to counter this mentality, when there is clearly a best deck with an optimal ratio and it's pricing other players out of the game, I bring along a deck which is _designed_ to have no effective win condition but still presents a fun challenge for the player across from me. Sometimes the best way to overcome a format is to undermine it.

I get where Coder is coming from, but I have a counterpoint. So the logic is that what happens is that a large percent of the best decks will be the same and what matters ends up being what gets mixed into them. The problem with this, is that it's essentially the same as there being too many high power staples in the game. What's the difference between the meta being 5 variants of Zoodiac v.s. a 5 deck format where everyone's running the same 20 staples like in OG Yugioh? It was fun when I was a kid, but ngl I don't want that at all in modern day. I already don't like the fact that 80% generic staples like verte and halq exist (before they got banned).

I'm gonna leave a suggestion for a future Magical Hats and my own opinion of this one. Are Floodgate decks healthy for the game? (Or what ever else about Floodgates, I went from playing skill heavy combo decks for years to Umi Control, and it's the most fun deck I've had in a while but it feels like it doesn't take any skill and in my experience Floodgates aren't fun to play against at all.) This is probably my favorite Tier 0 meta I've been apart of. I do wish some other decks could properly compete, but I've find Tear to be more fun to play against than Dragon Link a few years ago when they took most to your entire starting hand, or any deck that used the Scythe Lock combo. I want to see different decks be arguably the best deck of the format, but I want both players to actually play the game. (Hypocritical of me even though I said I just picked up Umi Control.)

Personally, I don't mind tier 0 formats under one specific circumstance: If there's multiple viable decks that aren't as powerful, but still have access to strategies that can compete with it.

Then that format isn't tier 0 anymore. At that point it is a tier 1 format.

I don’t mind Tier 0 formats. I do mind decks that play for several minutes during their opponent’s turn. It just feels like built in BM

I actually thought Kevin was baiting Farfa by jumping on MBT, cus I really do think that if anyone was going to come in support of Tear it was going to be Joseph, just by default.

this format sucks balls, to go with the chess analogy it's like chess if in chess you could pay 400$ to replace all your pawns with Queens and youtubers would defend it by saying it's extremely skillful and interactive

It was so clearly Farfa once again but still it was a blast to see Joseph reaction being outed. That aside, I think that TheLawYGO had the best take on the for the format. That while having an skill intensive format is fine and dandy, the fact that it comes with the cost of player expression is not good or healthy. He say other constructive stuff in that video but i think that's the best take about this situation

For new players I understand tear mirrors are daunting, but as a long term player who just doesn't have the time/skill to play Tear optimally the tear mirrors are still fun and even the non mirrors are fun. Why end on rulkallos + a couple traps when I can mill Qoatlus to cheat out UCT and enjoy my opponent's confusion, following it up with the grapha fusion and maybe one or 2 other pieces of interaction. Long story short you can play Tear in a way that's not as skillful or consistent, but more fun. The deck is just so flexible you can play it however you want. I hate decks that have cookie cutter combos, and tear offers a lot of freedom in this regard. Your end board depends on what you mill, and if you play a 60 card variant like I do you're always ending on a different combination of bosses and backrow

Tier 0 formats would be a lot less problematic if the game didn't have a paywall. A tier 0 deck on Duelling Book or Master Duel is much more accessible than in real life where somone who has 50-100€ for a deck is excluded from competetive for example. The more diverse a format is the higher the probability that a super cheap deck is top tier or close to that. And I think that's more important to be accessible than to have 5% higher skill ceiling in a meta that most people cant even play outside of DB ladder.
