Would it be unwise to build temples in the design of European Churches to rope in the Christians who have been Christians for several generations ? I know that the number of such Christians is quiet high in Andhra, TN and Kerela ... European style Hymns could be composed and ritiuals could be adapted to look more like Church Rituals , Like instead of Aarti , pure Bees Wax and Ghee Candels could be used and instead of Incense Sticks or AgarBatti we could use Catholic stule frankincense burner .The Ghanta or the temple Bell could be placed just like a Church Bell and during Aartis could be rung with the help of a rope ,like they do in Churches.

I wonder how and when Dr Ravi became competent to publish commentary on Bhagavat gita. From this talk i do not see any Spiritual aspect in his talk. Does he wants to replace Vivekanand or Shankara to teach Bhagavat gita to the world ? Sad that any person is publishing and teaching Gita without having any authority. Such loose interpretation very quickly becomes dangerous to distort and defame orginal Text.
@kumarbrowns4 жыл бұрын
Actually Ravi wants the priests, the aghamas, the rituals, the poojas out. He wants it to be some kind of a spiritual, seeking the truth type of thing, so that it can be easily digested into Christianity. A vivekananda can be digested, but they cannot digest that poor Brahmin priest who is doing his aghama poojas to his deity at the temple, whether he is getting paid or not. We should be wary of those who just talk about “spiritualism” without the accompanying aspects of Hinduism. The priests keep the dharma alive, not the high end thinkers like vivekananda.

@AuravWalden7 жыл бұрын
The greatness of the Indian system is that truth has been recognised as one. There is no separate scientific truth and spiritual truth. They have been shown to be one, with the scientific truth at the grosser level and spiritual truth at the subtler level of existence. Even Hindu religion is structured around truth with scientific methods for developing a knowledge/ experience of the truth (though those who do not understand the scientific validity of the methods call them 'rituals'). Because of that, Spirituality, Science and Religion, all are directed towards 'The Truth' in Hinduism. Christianity can never reach that lofty, all embracing position because it deals, as does western science, with the grosser level and not the subtler level. If and when Christianity digests Hinduism, it will produce Asuras (materialists) among them, with enhanced power, perhaps. Hinduism is the requirement for producing Devas (spiritualists) and the Devas have always won and will always win against the Asuras. In view of this, it would be wiser for the Christians to adopt Hinduism rather than try to digest it.

They dont need to digest the whole of Vedanta. They will pick and choose what will fit in to the christian framework so that the core tenets of christianity are not compromised. Having digested some parts of Vedanta they will then try to prove to western christian followers that their religion has had these right from the time of Christ. Just that these were not given importance earlier due to ignorance. This will help them hold back people leaving christianity. In a couple of years these digested concepts will be taught to Indians who will then start to feel that the difference between Hinduism and christianity is minimal & there is nothing for Indians to be too proud of their culture, that is not there in christianity. There by facilitating the conversion of next generation Hindus

About the u-turn... Very interesting point that people need to understand. Rajivji mentions that they accept many things about Hinduism as well as their own beliefs. This becomes muddled up, and as Rajivji mentions, this is not a stable place to be in the long-term. May I offer something more to this? My feeling is that these people who do these u-turns have to cross that huge civilizational divide to go from being an ardent Christian to a supposedly strong Hindu. You may have to correct me on this, as I do not have the experience of conversion from an Abrahamic religion to Hinduism, as I didn't grow up as a Christian. This is my take on why this happens. To go from Christianity to Hinduism requires a very big shift, not only conceptually, as in soul versus ātmā, Jesus only versus your iṣṭa-devatā, etc., but also people-wise and emotions-wise. See, people are inculcated with the fear of the devil, of Hell, along with the idea that "we are all sinners", etc. The fear is inculcated as a time bomb planted and armed during childhood, that impressionable age. What seems to trigger the fuse of the bomb is that the fear seems to be based on seeing oneself as having "strayed from the path of Jesus". And there is that fear that maybe, the Jesus people have the right answer after all, and there is the possibility that I might go to hell, however small it might be. IF that possibility is there at all, it just might happen... It seems to be that as one gets older (and closer to death), this time bomb is set off when certain conditions are met. One condition for a u-turn is that some Christians may go to church because it is a comfortable social environment to be in, even though they may not believe in many things being said or practiced in church. They just don't know where else to turn to at the moment. This means that invariable, they try different groups of people and blindly find these groups that have nothing in common with them to start with. They get lonely after a while and go to church again to assuage that pain before attempting to find another group elsewhere. Another thing is the attachment to memories, to certain people. There can be the tug of the strings of the heart, where one wants to go back to the ancestral lands, to become closer to the people and assuage that fear of loneliness as one marches towards death in an increasing unfamiliar land (as more loved ones die off), a state of the mind that is confused with reality, because the mind is a subtle level of matter or energy within the material universe. When one has been away from one's own people and one's own culture for so long, eventually, there is that pull, a yearning for the familiar, the happy times, etc. To prevent a u-turn, I think, a number of things must happen. One, the doctrines of one's own side must be understood very well and unequivocally rejected as not reflecting the truth, the reality for oneself. Two, the people sharing opposing perspectives must respect that conceptual boundary, as a Muslim and a Christian would - you have your house, and I have mine, so this is where it ends for you and I (the line is drawn in the sand, as far as friendships and emotional connections go). What I mean by this is that, "Oh, I have come to realize that I'm really Sanātanī, therefore, I really don't have anything in common at the spiritual level with these people." The emotional attachment for "getting together for a dinner" can become broken, since it's not comfortable to break bread anymore, as it were. It becomes awkward. It feels empty. Three, there then needs to be a community one is drawn to, as in a community of Sanātanīs. It is not enough to merely show up at temple and only wear the clothes and the bindu on Sundays, and only recite the text or go through the motions. There must also be a personal commitment to the Hindu community. This means not only volunteering in the community when able, but also getting to know the people, forming the emotional bonds with them, and them coming to accept you as their friend. I had this experience when I was in Bhāratavarṣa. I became attached to my friends there such that I really didn't want to come back to the US because I knew what lay ahead for me; being at home away from the temple for 6 days out of the week, surrounded by non-Sanātanīs who didn't share my experiences and knowledge, etc. I could literally feel the fear of leaving my friends and the pain of the separation as I departed in the cab for home. Having all these things in place ought to minimize the potential for a u-turn. Something has to keep you in the community. If you have this, then you will not want to leave the group of people you most feel attached to. Lastly, there must not be that time bomb called fear present in the person from childhood that gets triggered as one nears the end of life. I think that this the first thing that must be dealt with before any of the above-mentioned things are attempted, otherwise it becomes a futile exercise in changing/improving the understanding of one's self.

Thus the Mantras are unique and cannot be replaced by any other similar words or else it will not give the same affect.

Even if at this stage when Christianity appears to be employing really devious ways of digesting our things, we must accept the fact that it is just another sophisticated stage of this long running slow process. The christianity will always be deficient and will just be catching up with the Indian thought by slowly digesting and trying to understand it ( willingly or unwillingly - The very nature of Indian thought is that its a process and not a "Jada" set of rules. It will evolve you into a particular direction whether you want it or not - This is our "Poison pill"). Finally, if not in the present complex digestion maneuver, then in the coming ones the process will culminate into the digestion (or evolution) of all the western traditions and thoughts into the Vedic thought.

The following lines are from the catholic faith :. I. The Desire for God 27 The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he never stops searching for: The dignity of man rests above all on the fact that he is called to communion with God. This invitation to converse with God is addressed to man as soon as he comes into being. For if man exists it is because God has created him through love, and through love continues to hold him in existence. He cannot live fully according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love and entrusts himself to his creator. These lines align so closely with bhakti traditions and with devotion even within sufi thought. Ravi ji's words may feel objectionable to some viewers here, but that is only because we have all been used to see religions as enemies of each other only. Also all religions are already intermixed. Beautiful ideas know no borders. And still each religion is a unique tradition, they don't need to become a mish mash. What people like raviji are doing is drawing out the deeper truths that speak softly within all our traditions

Regarding the agama conversation around 1:18: please look into the work of bert hellinger and peter levine. Peter Lvine's work (somatic experiencing) utilizes vedic ideas of bhava (state of being which is refelcted from the mana/mind intot the physical body) and is the only clinically recognized process for completely resolving trauma/ptsd. This is scientific evidence for agama.

We have problems. Here in India , we are not PROUD of our Sanatana Dharma . We look upto the very few traditional Gurus. Most Hindu youngsters are ashamed to relate to ANYTHING Hindu , as it may slide them down from the international platform. I fail to understand the process of initiating the youngsters , without which , the few gurus within India , and some stalwarts like Rajivji , are going to have their work really tough.

Mr. Ravi, if a priest is not needed for spirituality then a pastor or bishop is also not needed. It’s not the vivekanands or ramana Maharishis but it’s the priests who perform their duties to the gods with an empty stomach, that have kept our dharma alive.

All wise religions will be digested in Hinduism.Allreligions have to come down to the TRUTH and Hinduism is nothing but a TRUTH in many ways, many layers, many dimensions and in many colours, Eko Aham Bahu Syam=I am ONE but seen as Many. Islam and xtianity has not understand even 10% of Hinduism.They are very very faraway from a greater TRUTH.

Origen (185-254 CE), one of the greatest Christian theologians of all time, is mistakenly mentioned here as having advocated reincarnation. He is the Christian theologian most often cited by advocates of reincarnation that this doctrine used to be standard Christian teaching until Origen was condemned. However, Origen postulated a novel theory of rebirth in his "First Principles" that was different from re-incarnation. Instead of teaching the journey of a soul through multiple bodies (he argues against this in his "Commentary on Matthew" and "Against Celsus"), he advocated that each person, existing as a unity of body and soul, traversed multiple worlds, i.e. a succession of ever-higher spiritual environments, until finding its completion in the resurrection. This allowed Origen to preserve the integrity of the human person as a composite of body and soul while allowing that person more than a single lifetime to reach its ultimate goal. This was a new version of the need for a succession of lives; but multiple worlds now replace multiple bodies. Origen considered human perfecting to be a very long process, indeed; hence the need for multiple lifetimes. His theory may be seen as evidence that biblical anthropology and biblical witness to Christ’s resurrection finally dominated his thinking over his dualistic tendencies of valuing the soul alone. The emphasis that Origen placed on human freedom and the long road to perfection thus makes him an ancient precursor of a modern reincarnation motif, though he would not have advocated reincarnation itself. I am offering this as a point of clarification, not addressing the merits or problems with reincarnation per se. Most of what I've written here is part of a forthcoming essay on reincarnation that will appear soon with articles by Hindu scholars in a special issue on reincarnation in the journal "Religions," that is edited in China. Mr. Malhotra knows me from my work as editor of the Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies. We published an issue on his work a few years ago. Thank you for allowing me to submit this long comment.
