The direction was absolutely inexplicable, and it wasn't until I found out one of the art directors was the lady who designed Max Headroom that it clicked with me why Koopah looked so bloody familiar. If they had assigned the actors to one movie, the art team to a second movie, and the directors and script writers to jobs they were more qualified for (Janitorial work, for example), I'm entirely sure we could've had 2 or 3 phenomenal Mario movies instead of one awe inspiring disasterpiece.

I don't understand why so many reviewers misinterpret Luigi's words as claiming that Mario isn't his brother. He's merely saying that Mario has been raising him from childhood and therefore is technically also his mother and father. Not hard to understand: they lost their parents when they were very young and Mario, who's clearly considerably older than Luigi, has been taking care of him ever since. But they're still brothers.

I too was one of those weirdos who loved the movie. The thing is, I knew that a direct copy of Mario would not be possible in live action without it looking super weird or even MORE disjointed (I mean, you tell me how Goombas and Koopa Troopas are supposed to work in a 1993 live action movie?). Plus, I realized that live action versions are always different from the cartoon version in some way (the He-Man movie for starters set my expectations accordingly, even the Super Mario Bros Super Show wasn't 100% like any of the games) so I went into the Super Mario Bros movie knowing that it wouldn't be like the games but rather an interpretation of it, and I loved it for it. Too bad none of the other kids saw it my way 😔

The idea that they analysed the video games and thought the best direction to take a movie adaptation was a cyberpunk dinosaur comedy is so crazy that I can’t help but love this film. I grew up in the late 80's up to early 00's and was a Nintendo & Sega "fan boy". I loved both companies and never took a side. And when the Super Mario Bros. (1993) movie came out and I later on saw it....I LOVED IT! Look, even as a young kid I KNEW that making a live-action movie based on the iconic Super Mario Bros. video games would not be fully possible at the time with-out making the movie either a mess or a complete joke (I look at you Street Fighter & Double Dragon). And remember I wanted the movie to be action filled and somewhat more serious in story, I had in mind that I could not expect a Mushroom Kingdom like world seen in the games of the time as that would just not look good in combination with an action/serious tone so liberties to "change up" things would be required. I really liked it back then and still like it - and that comes from a guy who is otherwise very strict to source material respect and have bashed on countless of movies based on video games, comic books, classic stories etc. I just could see this as an complete own thing not related to the traditional Super Mario Bros., but a Super Mario Bros. movie made for a wider audience with more action and a darker tone. I believed then and still hold to that if they could and would have made a couple of sequels that further explored this parallel world with other villains of the time like; Wart, Wario, Donkey Kong, Tatanga etc and introduced re-new Yoshi, classic Power-Ups and have some good action then it would have been promising! The only things I can remember I did not like in the movie was; 1. Why did they take so darn long to change into the Mario Bros. jumpsuit colors? It was far to late introduced. 2. Why was it princess Daisy from Super Mario Land (my first ever Game Boy game as a kid) and not the 3. Why was Yoshi just made a small pet-dinosaur that could not even have a rider on his back? 4. Why was Bowser Koopa close to afraid of basic germs? 5. Why was not the classic power-ups like the Fire Flower or Star seen in the movie at any point? 6. Why could we never have any Piranah Plant monsters seen or The things I liked that was "new" or interesting changes: 1. Instead of Mushroom people, having lizard and dinosaur people and that the Mushroom Kingdom was in a parallel world mirrored to our own world. 2. The awesome city and the vehicles looked kool and felt dark, dangerous and unstable. 3. The rocket boots looked awesome on the Mario Bros. 4. Loved the giant Goomba creatures.

Toad was played by Mojo Nixon. He played in a phcysobilly band and also voiced Sheriff Lester T. Hobbes in Redneck Rampage. Which he also wrote the title theme music for.

I actually liked the movie, but purely because it is interesting to look at -- It's clear that the writers had no idea what to do, as the Mario games themselves weren't particularly heavy on plot or worldbuilding, so they just strung up as many little details as they could and fused them into a semi-coherent and silly story. The reason I like it is because the more batshit moments are rather creative, as are chunks of the set design & CGI. Visually the movie was rather well made for 1993, featuring solid cinematography and bright colors, and the musical score by Alan Silvesti (who also did Who Framed Roger Rabit, the Mummy movies and all four Avengers films) is genuinely very good. Oh, and the movie moves at a surprisingly good pace, so while you're scratching your head during most of it, things are constantly happening, so it doesn't really give you a chance to become bored. Oh, and on a final note, Bob Hoskins didn't necessarily say it was the worst thing he worked on - It'd be more accurate to say that he stated it was the worst moviemaking experience he had. The reason was because the Directors (who were husband and wife) were intensely aggressive toward the Cast & Crew, to the point where the Cast & Crew literally had a party when the Directors were fired for the last chunk of filming, and the First Assistant Director was handed the rest of the project, and from my understanding, everyone only had good things to say about that guy. Final interesting note: The hated Directors were the creators of Max Headroom -- I mention this because you actually reference Max Headroom about 3 minutes in. Oh - And Iggy & Spike openly shout that they're drinking to the downfall of Koopa, so I think that's why they were arrested at the bar.

I will never forget the first time I saw this movie. I was 7 years-old, and my parents got it on pay-per-view one night for my brothers and I. We were so excited to watch it because duh-- it's Mario. I vividly remember that night that I quit watching it right before the third act because of how bad I thought it was. I was mad that it was nothing like the video game or the cartoon series from the 80s. I know this movie has a bit of a cult following now, but I don't get it. This movie IS really that bad, in my opinion.

Holy shit! I only ever got a few issues of Ren & Stimpy comics, but those exact two you showed on screen were among them. Anyway, I forget where I heard this (it might've been James Rolfe's assessment of the movie and its history), but apparently, then-president of Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi, was actually fond of the cyberpunk setting that the film was going for. I don't know if he changed his stance during later drafts, or if he ever denounced the film at all, but it is worth keeping in mind that, despite his position, Yamauchi never really gave a shit about video games, only ever viewing them as a way to help his company's bottom line (though, maybe it's fitting if you consider that Yamauchi was Nintendo's last president from its pre-video game era). I'd be surprised if anything this disastrous was to be greenlit under any president that came after him.

Your probably the only person that could get me to watch this movie again (even in review form). Its a testament to how funny and entertaining of a review style you have. This movie is in my top 5 most hated movies of all time and I been carrying it ever since I was a small child. Should be interesting seeing as a adult if the decades of hatred were justified.

As much as people like to rag on SMB '93, you can't deny its impact. It was the first movie to be made using the Flame compositing program, Look Up Table (LUT), and the Cineon scanner. If there's anybody in the comments who know the more technical aspect of filmmaking, you'll understand just how important this movie was.

If you're going to make a bad video game movie, this is actually how I prefer it. Don't halfass game lore and mechanics into it, make it as far removed from the game as possible. Like, I wish that the Resident Evil movies were done in, I dunno, space or something. Same plot, just in space.

I legitimately *LOVE* this movie. I know it's not accurate to the games but it's so entertaining. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo are great as Mario and Luigi. They have a great on-screen chemistry. Dennis Hopper is hilarious as King Koopa. Samantha Mathis is good as Daisy. The practical effects and set design are amazing. The soundtrack is great. The supporting cast is good. It's funny. I love it.

Saw this in the theater and had no idea what I was about to be subjected to. BTW Toad's actor is a singer called Mojo Nixon, he's just as weird in real life, putting out some super-controversial songs like "Bring Me Dave Geffen's Head" and "Don Henley Must Die"... And those are the tame ones.
