I'd like to note that the crows in the original movie were the only characters other than the mouse who treated Dumbo decently, were the smartest characters in the film, and went out of their way to help a fellow outcast get back at his oppressors. When I was a kid, I loved the crows, and to me they came across as characters I was supposed to love, not laugh at.
@jakefrost74043 жыл бұрын
That very aptly sums up most people's reactions to Dumbo's Crows. They were, indeed, one of the most lovable parts of the cast. Most folks who are throwing a hissy-fit over them are either grifting or are so emotionally fragile that swallowing them at birth likely would have been a mercy.

Yeah I understand exactly what you’re saying. However the crows were a racist stereotype of Southern black men, but they also represented characters who were good. So in a way, it’s not that evil and racist because it shows that some white people back then were not extremely racist. And saw black people as just that, people. People who can be lovable and good. But they also poked fun at thier style. Many things back then were poked fun at in cartoons. So they should’ve included it in the movie. But obviously they wouldn’t...

That ending bit with the "animal-free" circus was just really dumb to me. So like, all the animals are set free, ALL of them.......except the horse one-armed dude rides. So....let me get this straight. They let the elephants, monkeys, doves, even the domesticated pet mice (that will most likely never make it a day in the wild and would most likely end up being stepped on or snatched up by a predator) but they keep the horse for two performers to ride around on and do tricks on it's back in a small, cramped arena? I don't think they thought that message through enough. Going to the extreme of letting small, vulnerable animals to fend for themselves, but they still keep the horse. (also, I almost left my little sister in the movie theatre when seeing this movie it was that bad, especially that little girl's acting. I can't remember what line she said specifically, but I had to step outside for a bit before having to return to my little sister to watch the rest of that crap. She promptly forgot about the movie a week later. Waste of time and money XD) So in other words...thanks for tearing this shit apart, Mr Possum.

I'm totally fine with animals in a circus. They just have to be treated properly. And maybe not exotic animals in an environment foreign to them. Similar with a zoo. We have one here that has pigs, ducks, chickens, ponies, donkeys, and lamas. All animals that do fine in the natural environment we have here. Nothing exotic, but you can get very close. The chickens are even allowed to freely roam the surrounding park.
@youknowwhoelsecantthinkofagood4 ай бұрын
Late reply, but the movie also seems to forget what year it’s set in. The Ku Klux Klan was still prominent in the 1910s and especially towards the 1920s. Yet, these circus owners are concerned with animal rights of all things. Even if the performers were apparently the most open-minded people in the US at the time, their circus would probably go out of business because few would share their sentiment.

Dumbo was gifted a feather by the crows and that's what gave him the confidence to fly. And he held it with his trunk rather than snorting it into his trunk. Removing the crows and changing how the feather is handled makes this a movie other than Dumbo. It's not the same at all. The message behind the gifted feather was the idea that believing in yourself will help you achieve the impossible. They gave the iconic part of the Crows to some kids and it feels so cheap and pandering. The original Dumbo took risks. Dumbo got accidentally drunk in the original, which I admire honestly because you didn't know what the hell was going to happen in the original. It took risks and it told a great story. It wasn't much of a story, but it told it in an interesting way. Unlike the remake.

Here's something I really don't get about this movie; I love Tim Burton, I haven't liked literally everything he's ever done, but I really do love him. But here's the thing about him; you need to set him up with a very specific kind of movie for him to really live up to his potential, otherwise you'll get a failure. He's a horror man, and even things he's made that aren't strictly horror are still a lot more dark than a lot of movies for kids are. So if you give him Corpse Bride or Nightmare Before Christmas, he knocks it out of the park, but if you give him something else, like Dumbo for example, it doesn't work. It could've worked, if Disney allowed him to be change more about the story and be more out of the box, because then he could've made it a darker, more horrific take on Dumbo, which would've made it both original and fit with his style. But since they didn't, poor Burton's left flailing and gasping for air under a project that was never meant for him.

Dumbo is a movie that you know they'll make, but then you forgot it has already came out and by that time, the cinemas stopped showing it.
@SeasideDetective23 жыл бұрын
First, Disney removed the roustabouts and the crows from the Dumbo story because their implied racism might (somehow) disturb children. Then they added an amputee and someone getting crushed to death by a circus tent pole. Yes, I'm sure those won't disturb children at all.

It's good that my two favourite Disney movies are safe from Disney's life-action remake madness, because first, both weren't very successful and second, with Disney's standards for production quality, it would cost astronomical ammounts of money to create either a sunken city or a planet full of treasure.

". . . by a bunch of racist stereotypes." Please listen to Cab Calloway or any of dozens of black bands from the 1930s to the 1970s. The crows are not stereotypes of black PEOPLE _per se,_ but rather of black musician groups who would often start their tracks with this high-energy back-and-forth badinage. You can see elements of it in more "modern" music, if you listen to, for example, Afroman (another self-referential joke) and his song _Because I Got High,_ which has a section where the lead says, "I was gonna pay my child support," and one of the other individuals (I don't know the position this individual played) shouts, "No you wasn't!" in the background.

I remember this remake being ugly, boring, and pointless. The only good thing that happened when I watched it was when I was leaving the theater and a bird tried to fly away, but then hit the glass, and then it flew higher, and then it flew away. So in other words, the best part of my experience with this movie wasn't even in the movie. But my biggest problems are with the elephant stuff. First, the elephant CGI in this movie was awful and noticeable. I'm glad they fixed this with The One and Only Ivan, but in Dumbo, it was just awful. Second, the elephants didn't even sound like real elephants. Instead, they sounded like monsters from a horror movie or something. No trumpets, stock sound effects, or anything resembling an elephant. Just these loud roars and growls that sound like they're meant for some mutated monster. Third, while they are my favorite animal, I found the happy ending that Dumbo and his mom got to be pretty pointless to the overall movie. Again, it was done better with The One and Only Ivan. As always, this was a well-done review.

6:52 I am a Nigerian and I loved the crows as a kid when I first saw the original Dumbo in 2002👍 They were kind to him, they apologized after mocking him, taught him to fly and helped re-united him with his mom. I was genuinely surprised when I learned that Americans viewed them as racist and it still baffles me today. Why do they view the most weird things as racist?
@N12015 Жыл бұрын
Because they don't really know what racism is, which might explain why they keep failing under that mistake. Is not making stereotypes, is mocking those stereotypes and something DUE TO THEIR CULTURE/RACE. They're stereotypes, but they're never mocked; if anything, they're taken seriously with the feather and stuff, which is weird for a film made in the 50's.

This is the big problem with Disney's live action remakes: they try to fix what ain't broke. In many cases, they just wind up making things worse. What's with the kid playing Millie? It's like she lost her personality in a tragic bowling accident or something. Why did the goblin turn on the stove?
