How was it a racist portrayal when black characters were literally like Patricia Tolan in various classic sitcoms and movies featuring black characters? It's NOT racist to write her like that if you prefer to see black characters that are always uptight or bougie like. @@spaghetto9836 - It's not about the difficulty but the Return On Investment or ROI for short. In other words, it's usually perceived as cheaper in Hollywood to invest in an established franchise then come up with a new/untested intellectual property. Though to be fair, those new intellectual properties would still be bound by all the usual tropes you run across in media. Especially if you've consumed a lot of it over the years. It's why my criticisms of RPG Maker games and other stuff has probably only gotten harsher and more cynical since I remember other franchises using those same plot devices better. Though how much of that is just nostalgia for my childhood is debatable.

How I would have fixed Kevin's character is that I would have made it so that the reason he acts so idiotic is that he was possessed the entire time by an idiotic ghost. This is only revealed when Roan possesses Kevin and forces the stupid ghost out. In the end, Kevin staggers off confused and the dumb ghost goes on to stay at the firehouse as their receptionist. There I put more creative thought in this dumpster fire of a movie than the dumb bitches who actually wrote it. And I can say this because I'm a woman.

To further the Winston Patty slam dunk, Winston was answering a help wanted ad in the news paper, and showcased in several scenes that he wasn't an idiot. Even though Egon boiled down his explanation using a Twinky as his example, Winston got what the man was saying and added a fun quip in a smooth laid back manner. Then later while speaking with Ray, he carried the conversation diving into mysticism and Christian spiritualism. On top of that, he picks up on how to use the gear rather quickly, all things considered. Which one can infer he's had past experience operating similar machinery in terms of upper body strength, weight, mobility, endurance, stamina, etc. He doesn't scream or react in horror when faced with confirmation than ghosts, gods, and demons exist. Comparatively, he's the coolest headed character.... What does Patty do? Scream, run away, be obnoxious, slap one of her possessed friends while delivering exceptionally corny dated puns.... Oh, she manages to get the crew a car to ride around and go on missions in, so that's cool.... Yeah, Patty sucks ass, and is less progressive as the token Black stereotype than a movie made in an era that allowed for movies like 48hrs to exist. lol

The character of Winston was originally written as an older army veteran played by Eddie Murphy, but they rewrote the character to be more of an every man that the audience could identify with when Murphy turned down the role.

Winston was an example of not needing to be a genius with a doctorate to work with the Ghostbusters and be a friend and equal partner. He wasn't as smart as them but was never belittled for this. If anything the films should be lauded for their good treatment of a black man as just a guy who doesn't need to prove himself to be acknowledged by his white co-woekers, much like how Extreme had a main character who did busting from a wheelchair but wasn't defined by his disability.
@MonkeeKnucklez2

I never thought Winston was supposed to be portrayed as uneducated or stupid (unlike how they have Leslie Jones debasing herself in the reboot). I think he was just supposed to be an everyman audience surrogate who regularly points out the ridiculous and insane things going on around him. Ray and Egon are the weird ones, with one being the almost sociopathic straight man and the other being the childish pushover. They were all written to play off each other, with everyone filling in their own place on the team dynamic. Winston is the one who comments in the way that they think the audience would be thinking. Venkman is also like this, to a point, but they wrote him as a bit too smarmy and charming to be a regular guy, so rather than saying the obvious thing, he says the quippy, funny, clever thing.

What Sony never saw was that "female" doesn't automatically mean funny or interesting. Equality means that your movie might suck without a reference to the casts genitals. Truth be told, a better cast might have faired a bit better. I don't know why people feel the need to say that the cast is good. They are dreadfully grating. This movie's biggest mistake is that it's missing charm. If something is charming, you will overlook certain things. You wouldn't think 'how did nobody see the villain's secret chamber' or 'the special effects are pretty bad.' Without a good reason to like it, the flaws become much more obvious. Extreme Ghost Busters or as it is called by fans "Ghost Busters Dark" had a new team that was ACTUALLY inclusive with a female ghost buster Kylie (hell Janine had her moments two so,, 2 female Ghost busters technically) it also had race rep with Rolland Jackson and a handy capped (wheelchair bound) character Garret Miller the last guy being the sarcastic Eduardo Rivera ...oh and Slimer is there too. additionally they had Egon Spengler as a mentor (and Janine was around as well if I recall correctly) the show was pretty darn good. there was even a multi part special where the OG Ghostbusters reunited for awhile. unfortunately whoever ran the networks it was on were idiots and only a few episodes were released on DVD .. in France I think ... buuut If ya wanna watch the show now ya can still find it online with enough searching. also I'd like to point out the fact there was a Girl, an African American and a Paraplegic on the team wasn't the point of their characters. each had there own virtues and flaws. the fact Kylie was a girl never really came up other then Eduardo flirting with her and getting shot down she is a fan of Egon and reads his books she is the ghost expert of her peers. As for Garret him being in a Wheelchair hardly ever impacted him as a Ghost buster and he is one of the more athletic characters and a cheerful wiseguy , And Roland" well he is Black so what? its never mentioned much less impacts the story. he is just another person and he is the new tech guy working on new devices with Egon himself . As for Eduardo.. well he is the everyman and that suits him just fine. THIS is how ya do inclusive representation you make a character give them which ever trait BUT here's the catch ya don't make their entire character revolve around that single trait ys treat everyone equally and as if there is no difference between anyone. that's what was done here and hells I don't even think the Writers were THINKING about any of this it just happened in retrospect. they just wanted to make unique characters with Diverse looks and personalities and they more then succeeded in that. (I never really thought about this myself until I started watching this review and realized how screwed up the 'reboot' is ) Soooo... yeah Sony has no excuse -_-

I think another thing that hurts Ghostbusters 2016 is the fact that every character in the team is trying to be a Venkman and all that does is turn the movie into an adlib shitshow where everyone is trying be more clever than their costars. Part of what makes the original team works so good is each person brought something different to the table. Venkman was the snarky one, Egon was the brilliant dry guy, Ray was the bright eye'd optimist and Winston was the grounded blue collar everyman. The different personalities playing off of each other created a fun dynamic that works so well. The problem with the 2016 is you have four characters playing the same character and it loses not only it's focus but it sucks the personality out of the team. Each girl is trying to mirror a character from the movie but in the end all they're doing is trying to be Venkman and It sucks.

Worse, all those characters in the "remake" are basically trying to be (cringeworthy) comic relief. Previously, the only movies I had ever seen where _every_ main character (all protagonists and most of the antagonists as well) were lame comic relief were the first three _Transformers movies._

This is the best criticism of the movie I've read - and it's true. The fact that I enjoyed the dumb movie about idiots chasing ghosts, who suddenly have to avert a ghost apocalypse despite being incompetent (that's a big part of the movie's premise - it's not in the original), doesn't change the fact that the characterisation was spoiled by being an improv-off.

When it comes to movies that are centered on characters who are women, they can be done well. All you have to do is create interesting characters with flaws who are able to grow and change through adversity who happen to be women. The way I see it, a movie that doesn't focus on a character's gender and instead focuses on creating a character who feels like and acts like a real person in a compelling setting or world is the key to a quality storyline. Combine that with interesting sequences and dialogue as well as quality filming and editing with solid performances and a capable director alongside a quality crew and you're on your way. What matters isn't a character's superficial or arbitrary details, but what makes them stand out and worthy of an audience's investment. Sure, you can have overcoming a setting's closed-minded social norms as part of a character's journey and growth, but even this can be done without shoving a character's gender in their face as some kind of achievement in and of itself. For example, the original Disney animated film Mulan presents a character overcoming the social norms of their environment in order to accomplish something great. The thing is, Mulan does this not by virtue of her being a woman who is better than the boys because she is a woman, but because she is her own character who learns, grows, adapts, and ultimately emerges victorious with help from those she befriends while also being able to utilize her intelligence and quick wits to accomplish her goals on top of having a strong and indominable will. Her being a woman doesn't make her a hero, but who she is as a person outside of her gender does. If you want to create something worthwhile that represents women well in film, look to examples such as Mulan, Ripley from Alien, Sarah Connor from Terminator, etc. to draw inspiration from to name a few. It can be and has been done so there's plenty of proof all around you illustrate the point I'm making. Lastly, I apologize for making this a whole ramble as I initially intended to only type out a few sentences, but I feel this topic needs more of an explanation and a more detailed analysis to do it justice. Hopefully I have accomplished that without losing too many readers on this one. :P

It's just so pretentious, media should be judged for what it is and what it's trying to be, a movie like Godzilla or even Fast and Furious isn't trying to be anything other than a dumb action flick, not Shawshank Redemption or whatever.

TV shows like Late Night with Lily Singh, Riverdale, The Owl House and The Great North were given great reviews on RT by journos and critics, when really, they are also terrible. I'd argue the original podrace has more of an effect on plot than most other films "podrace". Aside from moving the plot along It serves to establish that Anakin is a very good pilot despite his age (and likely force assisted), and the bit about the Tusken Raiders routinely sniping racers also shows that he has experience flying while being fired at. Plus they actually accomplished the goal of making an entertaining action scene based on how popular podrace merch was for years afterwards.

Truth. Phantom Menace was clumsily done, because Lucas was trying to tell a story too big for its format. The Podrace scene was one of the better things to come out of the prequels, I think, and I say this after having time to appreciate what Lucas was trying to accomplish with the trilogy. You also forgot that Qui-Gon bet including Anakin that Watto didnt want to sell, he also tried to include Anakin mother but Watto refused, it wasnt just the part for the ship. Tattooine in Episode 1 is a "pit stop" but at the same time the prequels had to include Anakin Skywalker since the prequels were about the rise of the Empire and thus Anakin fall, Tattooine was required for what George wanted to do with the character far more that Naboo was but the story needed Naboo as well, the greatest flaw is that if you see it in order then Tattooine section feels off as if you see it in release order Tattooine makes sense.

About the dragon ghost, I'm pretty sure the animated Ghostbusters or some other older Ghostbusters media revealed that a lot of the more monstrous/inhuman-looking ghosts weren't actually ghosts, but rather, entities from other dimensions who just function like ghosts in our dimension.

What annoyed me about the scene where Bill murray's character got axed was not just the sheer stupidity and childness of the woman who unleashed it but there seems to be zero remorse at all. Wether or not you agree with a persons' views, politics or even if you dislike them in general any normal person would feel some remorse or be effected by a person dieing by their hand in some fashion. For those who would say "No the ghost killed him not her" She again released it due to her fragile ego and that led to him being killed so she is responsible herself. Say what u want if one of the origional ghostbusters did something that stupid and it got a person killed they would of not gotten away with it freely and it would of effected them badly for the movie. As far as kevin their asisstant I once heard a person defend how dumb he is as a sort of "ha got you" in regard to how female characters and the origional female secretary was regarded. Problem is aside from you know its not the 1960s anymore and there have been alot of deep and solid female roles Janine, forgive spelling if wrong, was not regarded as a dumb sexual object the crew could sexualize or objectify. She was intelligent and a solid char. Yea i never thought on it but why did he not just puppet them? I mean they are normal humans and had no sort of protection so why did he just not freeze them? Suppose the reason was just by the power of vagina...... I always hate it when a story dumbs a villain down just to make the heroes look good.
@alfredvickers4054
@alfredvickers4054 3 жыл бұрын
That's what I've always thought about the secretary thing--the way they treat Kevin feels like revenge for something that never happened. Janine was not dumb and was not objectified and drooled over. She could hold her own when verbally sparring with the guys. But in these feminists' delusional minds, Janine was treated badly so they need to make up for it by having female Ghostbusters treating a male secretary the same way. Even though the mistreatment of a woman never happened in the original! Insane.
@johnallen3033

I don't think its possible for the writers of this movie to dumb any character down. In fact I always assumed the reason most of the characters don't have any actual character and just feel like comedians standing there saying random things is that the writers exhausted every ounce of mental energy they had writing Kevin's character and just gave up on the rest.
@WisteriaDrake

Even with the "the ghost did it" argument, it doesn't explain the whole "person died in front of them" thing, which is horrifying IRL in every single case, even if you're just a bystander. Happy Gilmore did "character falls out a window as a result of another character's foolishness and dies" joke much better, because it was actually amusing. This could have worked if, for example, they had the ghost already out, in a glorified fish tank, perhaps. They show Bill Murray, and the ghost tries to break free, which scares him, and he falls out the window. They're absolved of the blame, they look shocked, hard cut to a funeral or a news statement, and the film moves on.

At least Scary Movie is supposed to be exclusively slapstick since it's a goliardic parody of pre-existing stuff, you know the sort of thing you can watch at an after-party and have a laugh at, because it was specifically made for that scenario. Ghostbusters 2016 is a different story: it's not a parody of the original Ghostbusters, so even with the slapstick comedy in you'd expect at least somewhat more developed humor, a serious moment or a well-written storyboard. There's a difference when you write a dumb joke as a result of a purposefully dumb direction and when you write a dumb joke despite having a serious direction, this is what really irks me with Ghostbusters 2016.

Let's be fair here Scary movies 1-3 were quite good for what they are, with the hindsight of knowing what parody movies turned into. The fourth one was the worst, and very much a victim of what happened to that family of films as a whole. I *liked* the Scary Movie Trilogy, but I don't defend the indefensible.

Scary Movie series was funny when it released but I think it’s obvious those movies didn’t age well because they were based on its current pop culture. You really can’t compare these two movies, one is is aware it’s a parody film based on pop culture, the other is political activism.
