Completely agree. I've been riding for 28 years, 20 years of which were on 1000cc or similar sports bikes. But then I test rode one of the first MT-07's in 2014. Loved it, you can have fun actually revving it on roads whereas a GSXR1000 or S1000RR can't even let you use full revs in first gear without getting banned in the UK (let alone gears 2-6...). So I bought one and each year since I've test ridden more expensive bikes, adventure bikes, hyper nakeds etc and never found one as much fun at the MT-07. Even the soft suspension is a benefit these days on out potholed roads. So unless you're touring behind a fairing, check one out. Maybe one mile in a hundred I miss the 1000cc 180BHP power. But for the other 99 miles, it wins!

I've been toying with the idea of a litre bike but after a bad experience with a speed camera am reassessing. I mostly ride around a city anyway. Het @DeputyDD how did the front end hold up. I have seen vids from Dave Moss saying the suspension is rubbish nd the fork needs adjusting. He told me they need replacing sooner than other bikes. Any observations?

@@bmwm3man true but the MT09 isn't a big bike, its still a pretty light middleweight and the middle weight category is the biggest right now coz the 800cc-900cc street beasts are fun, fast, comfy (certain models).

@@thepsychicpeach8425 oh sorry I wasn't referring to weight specifically but power. With the mt07 you can push it to its limits on the roads, but most can't do the same with mt09 unless they drive strictly highways. So if you mostly drive around town the mt07 would be more fun since you'd consistently have to hold the mt09 back. I mean we still have to keep in mind that the mt09 makes 1000cc bike levels of torque even though it won't hit the same top speed.

@@bmwm3man I don't really think so dude. It makes like 80nm and 125hp litre bikes make 140nm and 200+ hp. For me i think thats the perfect amount for the street before it becomes too much. Tbh where I live the MT09 or any middleweight (eg Duke 790, Z800 or Street Triple) just makes sense. Coz its pretty spacious. Where you live is probably more congested so the MT09 wouldn't makes sense to riders there. But to us those class of motorcycle are perfect 👌

Thumbs up for Michael, once again. A much younger rider with a previous-gen MT-07, on our weekend group, will make me and my 1290 Super Duke R work double-time just to keep up on tight mountain roads. I'm 64 and have owned 24 bikes including two "10 second bikes". My most recent was a 2003 Honda Superhawk VTR1000F (10.91). I bought a new 2018 MT-07 in white and red almost three years ago. Paid $7,524 (US) OTD. It is my favorite bike. It's fast and handles and brakes very well. It is the best value in bikes today IMO. The only flaws are the position of the horn button and a seat which is overly firm. After an hour, I need to get off to walk around. Tried an Alaska Leather sheepskin seat cover and now can ride 1.5 hours. Looking at the Yamaha Comfort Seat which is $183 on RevZilla but out of stock. My bike has no mods and I like the semi-quiet factory exhaust. I usually change bikes every three years or so and the 2021 MT-09 deserves a look. I don't need more power, just want to try something new. Not getting any younger.

Cracking little bikes for sure ... I had a 2018 from new for bout 18 months and loved it. Traded it in against a new 790 Duke and find the Duke to be a comprehensively better machine .. but then it should be as it was more expensive. MT07s are great, basic, easy to ride, no faffing about and plenty of fun .. a good slice of easily accessible biking. The 790 in comparison is a little more 'serious' with all it's trick electronics and settings etc etc .. but, in my opinion, also more fun to ride :) One thing I do miss from the MT though is the sound .. with a decat and decent end can on them they sound properly brutal .. very deep, sharp, loud and aggressive .... nicer sound than the 790 makes for sure ;)

As a $3500-$5500 used bike, the MT-07 is beyond amazing, with little comparison but as a $7700 brand new bike, the Trident 660 is superior in every way. Once ecu kits for the trident come out, it will outclass the MT-07 readily even in "Fun factor". The trident is basically a cheaper yet superior XSR700. @@durim187 Through simple inference, a reasonable amount. The Trident uses a de-tuned motor (with a shorter stroke) from the Daytona 675, which has a VERY reliable track record. The motor itself is around 9 years older and more proven than the fz-07 motor, so a de-tuned version of it would easily outlast the original. Plus you have triumph's record for good fit and finish, and you have enough information to assume very good reliability. The only portion of the bike that may be up for question would be the new speedometer and possibly the electronics.

If you buying the 2021 bike get the MT09 as it’s a big improvement . Earlier bikes, I believe the MT07 is more rounded and you can have just as much fun riding it. Either way, there all great fun bikes and you won’t go far wrong.

Yamaha runs demo rides at dealerships in the US. I took an XSR700 out for a demo about a month ago in CA. You can also try renting one off Twisted Road or Riders Share. I like the direct throttle response and feel of the conventional throttle on the XSR700/MT-07. I'm not a fan of the MT-09's ride-by-wire system. Off to on throttle response can be jerky. Slipper clutch, traction control, and the 40 additional HP on the MT-09 are nice though.

@@dry509 I'm planning on picking up a new MT-07 as soon as my dealer gets it from Yamaha. Looks like that might be early May. If you've never ridden either, I would highly recommend trying to rent or test ride one way or another. Comments from other riders and reviews from moto journalists can be helpful, but nothing beats firsthand experience.

I'm on the verge of trading up from a Honda 500. Thanks for the review. While soft, the suspension and chassis still allow you to push on through winding roads? How would the MT compare with the GSX S750? I guess the Suzuki will feel tamer and smoother in town but it has the extra ponies of you push the needle up the tach. Possibly better suspension? Same price where I live.

Get the Suzuki. It’s a WAY better bike for the money and it’s not even close. The suspension, motor, and brakes are really good and the styling is phenomenal. The Bridgestone Battleaxe tires are really good as well and you get ABS, traction control, easy start, and clutch assist so the bike is virtually impossible to stall.

06:46 The MT-07 isn't exactly well built. It has a lot of issues. Most of all, they rust like crazy. I've seen examples of them showing up only a few months after they rolled out of the store. At that point, it's under warranty. But if you're going to buy one used. Check the frame, all the bolts, handlebar, forks and swingarm for rust. That said, it's a Fantastic bike if you get a good one.

I rode an MT07 and I found the suspension and brakes to be lacking, and I thought the power delivery was very abrupt and punchy. No wonder it is good for wheelies! The transmission on the one I rode was also very stiff and clunky. Are they all that way, or was there something wrong with my particular sample? I thought the twin cylinder engine was pretty buzzy. For around town I still prefer my Honda CBR300R, even though it doesn't have as much power it is lighter and more nimble around the city. My Honda also has much better brakes and a better suspension, and it is easier to navigate around city traffic, being lighter and more agile. It also has more wind protection than the MT07, which I found quite windy on the highway. I think if I was getting one of the MT Yamaha's, it would have to be the bigger MT09 or MT10 for the smoother triple cylinder or four-cylinder engine. I never have really liked twin cylinder engines. What is weird is the little Honda's single cylinder engine with the counter balancer is as smooth if not smoother than the twin cylinder in the MT07. I found the MT07 a rough, uncivilized bike with a jerky power delivery. I guess if you like to do wheelies, it would be a good hooligan bike, but I was tired of it after a short ride. The MT07 reminded me of an old Cushman I had which had a lot of torque but was very rough and lacked refinement.
