Lets face it, most buyers only use the 1st and 2nd rows of seats and need all the rear storage available. Those 3rd row seats need to be able to lay flat to loading floor height or be totally removed for optimal storage behind the 2nd row. This is a big miss on Toyota's part. Powertrain appears to be awesome. But lack of larger storage behind the 2nd row is its downfall.

The new sequoia is great, but they failed on the 3rd row seat and the rear cargo. Keeping that solid rear axle and the battery pack ruined that space and it's just not enough for a family. The videos so far show how little head space is in the 3rd row. And We don't know yet, but the rear cargo looks smaller than the 2nd gen sequoia. The shelf itself is almost an admission there is not much room. They catered to the Land Cruiser side too much, it should just be a different trim or model. I have owned the each generation sequoia , but I might look at a Tahoe for next time because of the rear cargo space.

We are able to slide it with car seats install and our little ones are able to climb in the 3rd row. 2 no power down rear window . That is a helpful feature at times. These are some of the key feature that set the sequoia apart from the others. Looks like Toyota went back instead of forward with some these features. 3 no multi mode 4wd. This system was great on changing road conditions in the winter months. Not sure why they took it away with new one. 3rd row looks smaller too. Otherwise the rest they did a nice job. Just feel that some of the important features they took away. The current one you can fit adults in the 3rd row. Yes we currently have 5 kids and one due any day. We currently have 4 forward facing car seats plus one high back booster and now and now an infant carrier. All are Graco and all fit. High back and one forward facing is in the 3rd row and our 9 yr fits in between them. I can post pics if anyone wants to see. I feel the new maybe smaller. Ours is a 2014 limite

Andre, A few days ago I was thinking of the new Sequoia as the Corn-Fed American Land Cruiser® but I have reconsidered. It now seems more like the Tundra of SUVs because it uses a completely different 4WD system. Being different does NOT make it worse, it actually leaves the door open for the return of the Real Land Cruiser™ with its permanent AWD and locking rear, center and front differentials. 😉 BTW when I wrote this I had not yet heard Toyota Chief Engineer Mike Sweers call it "the Tundra of SUVs" in the TFLtalk interview.
@mybro7272 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately for Toyota, the Sequoia is _not_ the Tundra pickup. They are two entirely separate models that compete in separate segments and they’re _supposed_ to serve different purposes with entirely separate priorities in mind. Calling the Toyota Sienna the “Supra of minivans” doesn’t necessarily justify a minivan with no sliding second row, and horrible third row passenger and cargo space.
@rightlanehog31512 жыл бұрын
@@mybro727 They were selling about 8,000 Sequoias per year. It has now been reported from a couple of sources that Mike Sweers had to personally convince Toyota to invest in a new Sequoia. Time will tell if the public is willing to tolerate the compromises baked into the new one. Speaking of compromises, the non-removable second row seats and Hybrid-only powertrain did not stop the Sienna from becoming the top selling minivan in 2021. We don't usually get to measure our next vehicle choice against perfect competitors. We are totally within our rights to push automakers for better products but some degree of compromise is always part of the buying decision.

@@rightlanehog3151 The 2021 Toyota Sienna has a multi-link rear suspension for *improved handling and ride quality.* The Sienna’s second row folds flat and also reclines up to 25-inches back, believe it or not. The Sienna also boasts nearly 35 cubic feet of space *behind* it’s third row and 75 cubic ft. of cargo space with just the third row folded away. Needless to say 2nd & 3rd row practicality is highly favored upon North American consumers with larger families and if you were looking for a new minivan you might consider the Sienna _too._ Not exactly apples to apples or the same story here with the even larger and much more expensive Toyota Sequoia. It’s mechanically *identical* to a pickup truck designed to carry cargo in a bed. So ride quality is highly questionable since nothing was done in the rear to accommodate passengers of 7 or 8 _and_ their cargo. The Sequoia on paper competes with the Tahoe and Expedition. In reality I don't think the 1st and 2nd owners of 3rd gen Sequoias will cross shop the other offerings. The Ford and Chevy will be great people movers with great utility. I think the Ford and Chevy will have better usable space because of the rear IS. Most 3rd row SUV buyers will notice and shy away from the Sequoia. The Sequoia will attract overland and offroad savy types with money to spend, and maybe those looking to buy a 2 year old LC for daily use and light to moderate wheeling. Ultimately, I think this will really shine in the used car market. The list of 3rd row straight rear axle offroaders is pretty short. Let's be honest - most 1st owners are not really wheeling their SUV.

The one feature that I use very frequently on my 2008 Sequoia is the sliding second row captains chairs. The combination of both second and third row adjustability would have given it a superior flexibility option. I find this to be one shortcoming of the Sequoia. I also wonder if the Sequoia (in the lower trim than the Capstone) will suffer in ride, handling, and cabin comfort given its solid rear axle vs. its primary leading competitors and their independent rear wheel suspension. With GM constantly cancelling feature availability, I used that as an excuse to cancel my recent order on a 2022 Tahoe Z71 and will sit back and decide between the refreshed Expedition or this new Sequoia.

No, it's not, blame the switch back to a live rear axle, seriously, compromising the 3rd-row legroom height and cargo area, that and the fact that the new-gen Tundra is heavier than both the Silverado or F150, must likely means the new-gen Sequoia will also be heavier, there's a reason for the big increase in sales for the GM full-size SUV models, thank that IRS for the increase in 3rd legroom height and more cargo space, that makes a big difference vs the previous-gen models 3rd-row and cargo space, either way, it's a better Sequoia (well, at least in the 1st two rows), but is it better as a plus-size Land Cruiser, no hydraulic suspension like the LC (they need to at least offer 4-corner air suspension), a locker like previous game GM full-size SUV models, load-leveling rear air suspension like a 2001 Lincoln Navigator I believe, seriously, if Toyota did the new-gen Sequoia with an IRS setup vs live axle, then you could question what's the top dog full-size SUV is, as of now, GM, Ford, Jeep, and then, Toyota, Toyota dropped from 3 to 4th in my opinion, did Toyota really just create a long wheelbase LC and called it a Sequoia, Toyota strategy with LC (small full-size 3 row SUV) and Sequoia (medium/standard full-size 3 row SUV) worked for them, not all automakers offering full-size pickups needs a Suburban size SUV, now for price guessing, given Toyota just released hybrid cost for the Tundra, the current-gen base Sequoia started @ $50,500 now add $1,925 (the increase from previous-gen to new-gen Tundra) + $3,400 (for the Tundra hybrid system) equals $55,825 for the 4x2 and add an extra $3,000 (again new-gen Tundra prices) for 4x4 system equals $58,825 for the 4x4, for the based 4x2 and 4x4

They are such mainstreamed vehicles they will keep getting sales. Sure the new sequoia probably has the best off road qualifications. But like the last sequoia and all the other current full sizers. How many of these will see off road conditions. Especially in an 80 thousand dollar vehicle. They’re trying to keep their share of the luxury off roader market… it’s either that or lose most of the sequoia owner base (no one is buying a 2nd Gen sequoia for its ‘luxury’ but rather its off road capability and storage..) ultimately a bit of storage can be lost to keep the off road capability

For how I would use these machines, the lack of a true flat load floor when the seats are folded in the Sequoia is a deal breaker. Also, I just prefer the way the GM twins look. That powertrain is killer in the ‘Yota though.

I dont like the gm twins .the sequoia is better than suburban tahoe expedition and wagooner .this time toyota has done it
@Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix2 жыл бұрын
GM had the same issue amd they finally went to independent rear suspension, its interesting that toyota went back to a solid axle but I get why. Its better for towing and much, much better offroad because it actually has suspension travel and articulation, the others have practically no suspension travel and will lift wheels even over the smallest obstacles. Check the TFL video of the Z71 tahoe, major disappointment offroad. Couldnt even get over a small rock. The expedition also was terrible as the 4wd system overheated on TFL video and another auto test channel as well. The regular 4wd will easily beat the others offroad, and the TRD pro is going to mop the floor with every other large SUV when it comes to offroad by a huge margin. Not to mention the aftermarket lift and suspension kits that will ve available. But you trade 3rd row comfort. But the shelf system is pretty smart because you still get a flat load floor.
@Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix2 жыл бұрын
And GM had a solid rear axle up until the new tahoe came out when everyone else had gone to independent rear suspension, and it had no kind of solution for a flat load space and people still bought a ton of them.

Given the past Sequoia sales position, and the "Japanese" origin of the brand, it would be more informative to compare the Sequoia versus the Nissan Armada/Infinity QX80. Will the new Sequoia overtake the sales of Armada+QX80 in the coming years? The Armada is easier to live with being just slightly more compact than the others, and also drives more sporty being based on the Nissan Patrol (which competes with the Land Cruiser in other parts of the world), so it is a big ask to see the Sequoia make this sales overtake.
