I have one and I use the quick shifter all the time. Almost never use the clutch when moving. The key is to give it just a little squeak of gas when upshifting. No jerkiness at all when you do that. It’s all part of getting to know the feel of the bike. Best bike I’ve ever owned!

In my 30s, I decided I wanted a motorcycle, took the courses, and earned my endorsement. The course instructor suggested we all buy a cheap used bike as a 'starter-bike' but I chose a different path. I wanted a full-service bike with full wrap-around coverage and this is what only BMW could offer. I ordered a parallel-twin BMW motorcycle and was so intimidated initially, I had it delivered to my garage. To have your 1st bike come with heated seat, heated grips, ABS, and road side assistance all provided by BMW made the ownership experience exceptional and I would do the same in the future. BMW several years ago offered the R1300 GS and other models as a 'base' model with a laundry list of options/packages however, the motorcycle market has changed (smaller overall market) and BMW has gone to the top of the market where a smaller but loyal customer base will pay $30K+ AND the higher than average service maintenance costs for a motorcycle. Thanks for the great motorcycle reviews.

The R1300GS has been out for a year, not several years. The R1300GS isn't $30k+ unless you add every possible option and as someone who's owned an R1250RS for 4 years, the maintenance costs are pretty average. Finally, BMW has always been top of the market with a small but loyal customer base.

Great review - and great to see some of my home state of NJ (I'm in Australia now), although I was having some difficulty telling what area you were in. I bought the Option 719 version of this bike - just did the first service this past week, and I'm going on a 400 km ride tomorrow. I honestly love it more every single time I ride it. I've always respected the GS line, but this is the bike I really needed BMW to make, to get me to buy one.

"Still the Adventure Bike Benchmark?" I don't know. Can we get a new BMW fixed in areas of the world where there are no authorized BMW Motorrad service centers? Last I checked BMW locked down their service manuals, specialty tools, and diagnostic tools.

I rode the 1300GS twice but found it to be uncomfortable and too leaned forward (poor Rider Triangle). Yes, the engine is a little smoother and quicker than the 1250GS but way more uncomfortable. I'm keeping my 1250GS forever!
