With S2000s steadily climbing in price and increasingly sought after by classic car collectors, is it still a good buy for the average car enthusiast?

I just watched a couple of your vids. You definitely know how to drive, you have skills. I just bought a lightly used 2006 S2000 with 54K miles on it. The car is in extremely good condition. I agree with you that this vehicle has a better appreciation value than other sports cars in the segment and it is a very unique drive compared to the others cars in its class. Mine is bone stock and my recently ordered mods to start are front and rear sway bars with poly bushings. My next will be a master poly bushings kit. Ill stay there for a while and look at a brake kit down the road. Good vid, great info so keep up the fun work.

First off, WOW those brakes 😳. I love Honda and I strongly considered an S2K after I sold my RS, but to me the price exceeded the value. I felt the same when I nearly bought an NSX. I haven't owned either, and while I have great appreciation for both, I guess I don't have that emotional connection that some do. Personally for the money I'd rather buy something newer with more amenities and improved safety. Perhaps I'll revisit it again as a project car down the road. Great video as always Fenton! 👍

If your ap1 is 2000 or 2001 you are set. Those Ecu ran rich and since the f22c is more like a 21.5 cc you won’t have running issues. Just remember not to exceed 8.5 K revs because the piston speeds become too much beyond that.

@Joshua H Yeah, and there are many cars superior to the ap2. If the ap2 engine is so superior, why was it kept around the world market in particular Europe? All the f20c needs is updated retainers and banjo bolts if you have a MY 00, 01. Some people clamor and want the 9k red-line combined with the raw edgy handling. The ap1 is how Honda engineered the s2k to be. Honda pretty much softened the s2k with the ap2 in America for the common folk because the ap1 was too raw.

I've been seriously considering an AP2 S2000 as a replacement to my 02 DC5 Type S that you actually sold me on as my daily driver 5 years ago. I recently started restoring a FC RX7 GTUs, which is my weekend car, and the enjoyment you get out of driving a little sportscar around is just something you don't get out of most cars. I've never driven an S2000 before, but I'm assuming the drivetrain feeling would be quite similar to the K20 in my DC5, but matched to a much better chassis and with an FR layout?

I bought my wife a 2004 S2K with 5500 miles on it in 2006 (It was titled new in 2005). Its been her daily driver since and the girl just loves it! It has 77k miles on it now. The top is always down unless it's raining or extremely cold here in NW Florida. Regarding maintenance, I'm on my third top (original, a 2nd top completed by the dealer under warranty, and the 3rd top by LHT), I had urethane bushings installed by LHT, and just routine maintenance completed by me. This car never breaks down or breaks the bank! It just keeps going! We'll never let this car go. We love it!

Here in Europe they have kept the AP1 engine ith the 9k redline till the end, but also introduced the AP2 optics in 04. Best of both worlds. Lots of good insights presented here Fenton. You've inspired a lot of thought, so bear with me only if you dare, lol. You really nailed the reasoning behind my own S2K purchase. After doing a ton of research on these cars, knowing that in my case that the car would be kept completely stock, I came to the exact same conclusion that you did. I specifically targeted the 2004-2005 AP2v1 cars as a result. It took me a little while to find exactly what I wanted. But patience ended up being my friend as I located an incredible 2005 car being offered by a fantastic seller (the value of which should never be diminished). The car was in minty condition and all-original featuring my favorite color combo of Grand Prix White over black/tan with 24K miles. This was in 2017 and I paid $21.5K for the car back then. I'll admit to being surprised and not exactly pleased at what an equivalent example would sell for today (more on that below). As someone who does not track my S2000 but who does manage to enjoy spirited drives on twisty stretches of backroad I really love this car and have never looked back since buying my S. Nor have I ever wished for a different variation of the car. That's not intended as a knock on the AP1 cars or the 2006+ AP2 cars. There are no doubt other S2000 owners out there whose own needs are better met by these other variations. Developing an understanding of how the car will be used in conjunction with any specific preferences that a buyer might have seems to be the key here. That said, had I ended up an AP1 car or a later AP2 car I don't doubt that I would still manage to find more happiness with any variation of the S2000 than with any other comparable sports cars. As if there even are any other sports cars comparable to the S2000 for the same kind of money, The reality for me is that they don't exist, regardless of the cost involved, at least not based upon the factors of why these cars appeal so much to me personally. (I don't place nearly as much importance on 0-60 times as some guys do.) However, I also realize that the S2000 just isn't the answer for some people. Unlike the Miata, the fans of which like to say "is always the answer", I wouldn't make the same claim regarding the S2000, it being a more focused and intense car. I don't have a problem with the Miata by the way and would actually recommend to some friends over the S2000. When it comes to the S2000, I would be more comfortable making the claim that "for some, the S2000 is the only answer". However, I am the odd man out when it comes to the value of these cars. Other S2K owners love watching the value of these cars go up year after year. I instead think about the kind of impact this will have on me as someone with no interest in selling my S2000 (I'll likely hang on to it until I can no longer get in and out of the thing). I feel that the constantly appreciating values of the cars will only serve to drive up the cost of parts at a faster rate than normal. In addition, whereas thieves might have predominantly targeted the seats in these cars early on, with the values escalating, stealing the car itself likely begins to make more sense. While my S2000 is a weekend car and is kept in a garage when not in use I still have my concerns regarding this issue. For this reason I have a guaranteed value policy on the car through Hagerty Insurance and would recommend this to any S2000 owner that qualifies for such a policy. I track the values of these cars primarily to ensure that I'm covered for the true value of the car in the market today. One final point. While some prefer the hard top (as is evident by the prices being paid for OEM examples), the fact that the S2000 is convertible is a big part of my attraction to this car. For me when it comes to driving, nothing beats top-down motoring. It offers certain unique visceral elements to my road going experience that not even my motorcycle can provide (and vice versa to be fair). As always, I enjoy your videos, and this one was no exception. Be they S2000-focused or not you always manage to offer some interesting insights. But to be totally honest, I'll admit that I do look forward to seeing you in a S2000 once again.

VirtualGuth Hardtop was a hefty cost new where I live in the world. They’re made of alloy and are very light. I agree that top down is great in the s2k but having a roof makes it a year-round proposition as my daily. Also if the values of the cars keep going up then hardtop should will continue too, possibly at a greater rate. Honda to their credit have kept quite reasonable prices on spares however some parts have fallen away from production. The 20th anniversary effort on the spare part front recently will no doubt bring some of these back.
@VirtualGuth
@VirtualGuth 4 жыл бұрын
@@peejayem4700 While you obviously can daily one of these cars, I personally would not want to do so. But then my very first car was a Triumph Spitfire and I'll admit that I managed to daily that car year-round in Illinois (without any sort of hard top). In my case it was a blend of youthful enthusiasm, a lack of wisdom, and of course limited funds that made this possible, lol. I'm not exactly holding my breathe on the 20th Anniversary spare parts program. I don't doubt that Honda will follow through with the program, but seeing that the website associated with the program was in Japanese only, I'm not sure when or if this program will make it to countries outside of Japan. If it does, hardtops would likely be included and surely at a price that will be much less than what people are paying today. I personally listed out essentials like the rubber bits that degrade strictly with time while sitting in the garage irrespective of use. (If you don't already do so, make sure that you stay on top of treating your weatherstripping, and other various seals, molded rubber hoses, etc. with Honda's Shin-Etsu grease.)

I think the idea that these cars, like the E46 M3 is underpowered relative to the modern cars is juvenile. The majority of people who love these cars love them for the same reasons the more well funded enthusiasts love the air cooled Porsches. A 964 is significantly slower than any modern 911 but people gravitate to them because of the analog feel they deliver. Every sports car over 65k seems to clock 60 in under 4 seconds so who gets to 60 by a few inches first is a moot point, at least in my opinion.

Late to the video, but I'd say absolutely yes the s2000 is worth purchasing in 2020. I think your advice is great as far as setting the budget in the high teens to sub 20s. Paying anything under and you're going to be adopting a lot of years of neglect, not a problem if one intends to rebuild or turn into a dedicated track car. Anything over and you're now looking at collector money, not a problem if $$ isn't a problem to the buyer. Prices are increasing and in the later half of 2020 they have seemed to escalate even faster. Examples one could have bought for $15k 8-12 months ago are now going to go for $18-20k. I picked up a decently clean 04 with 88k for $17k about a month ago. Rougher and higher mileage s2000's in California were going for $20k.

Tax wise , here in Europe , the S2000 is much better option than the other cars your mentioned. V6 engines cars cost an average of 4000€ to register and 1000€ per year in "road taxes". Other viable options would be MX5 or GT86 but they are too mainstream compared to S2000.

Bought my 06 NFR 2 years ago with 44k miles from the original owner for $19,000. The OEM hardtop was ridiculously expensive though to source one relatively close by. I’ve had nothing but amazing experiences with this car, don’t plan on getting rid of her for a long long time.

I put Rockford Fosgate door speakers, and a Bluetooth connection through the cigarette lighter (ac converter) to play Spotify thru the radio. Also, I have been daily driving my 2003 suzuka blue S2000 from 33,000 miles to 88,000 miles now. Four years later. It's 4x more refined than a NA Miata. 2x more refined than a NB Miata and 25% less refined than a Cayman S. I like how we've had all the same cars and know so much about car markets.

Picked up an 08 S2000 back in February for a cheap track car (tires are expensive on the ZR1 and 3RS lol) and can honestly say it's my favorite of the bunch to take out to the track. Far from the fastest, but just so much fun. Cannot recommend an S2000 highly enough.

I have been daily driving my ap1 for 5 years. It’s the best daily drive I have ever owned. So much fun, passion, energy. I bought mine back in 2015 for $16k it had 70k miles on the clock and now I’m at 145k miles. Do I think the s2000 is worth buying in 2020? Yes. I think it’s worth buying regardless of the year. This is now my 2nd s2000 and is my daily commuter, my backup fun car is a 1956 Volkswagen. That is not something you wanna drive everyday. To me, the s2000 has all the creature comforts you could ever want in a daily drivers car. Power windows, air conditioning, heat, leather seats, convertible top, power steering and brakes, great horsepower, great handling which makes for fun daily driving. I’m not bored when I drive my car, when I drive something boring like a civic it just sucks. My opinion take it for what it’s worth.

I paid 13,200 for my 02 BB w/ full red interior with 78k(give or take) back in 09. I have a had few cars over the years, and i have always owned 1 honda concurrently with any other car i owned. Sometimes 2 hondas at once, and it is bc they last, they are easy to maintain and parts are available. They have not lost value, but have gone up. Private sale prices seem to be all over the place. I am looking for an Ap2, and am bummed I will be paying anout 4 or 5 grand more for same mileaage, 11 or so years later...BUT, the smile these cars put on your face is worth it. I hate how VTEC got played out thruout the years but these cars with test pipe and a good exhaust, wide open throttle and the top down...Oh man, it's glorious. IMO, the only other car that comes close to the rawness, is the ITR, WOT in that car is something every driver should experience.

There was a point in my life where S2000s were still at a low point like 8-10 years ago and I could have picked an up an AP2 at my budget but I waited too long and they just went up from there and exited my price range. Bought a Ap1 4 months ago. Two valve retainers cracked after I drove it a little hard the day after I brought it home. It has 73k miles and I bought it from a 65 year old guy. $2800 later it's fixed with Ap2 retainers and keepers and a head job. The experience really ruined it for me. Two days after that was fixed I learned about rear wheel bearings needing to be re torqued. I was hearing a horrible loud clicking/popping noise. Sounded like the bearings were toast. Last week check engine light came on. Scanner says knock sensor. Replacing the knock sensor and listing it for sale. I don't have the time for repairs every other weekend. Another thing, when the AC is on the car has about half the power. Thats a deal breaker. Paid for $12,000 for it so should be ok on my return.
@peejayem4700
@peejayem4700 4 жыл бұрын
FloridaWoodsToWater The valve retainers don’t crack from driving it hard. You can rev an AP1 to 9k all day, every day with confidence. I know from experience as I have done so for over a decade - and it is common knowledge on s2ki. However, if the engine has a mechanical over-rev from downshifting that sees engine speeds over 10k then they may crack - and then will continue to deteriorate from hard driving.

I'm really craving a proper sports car as a second car, my Civic Si cant run away from its bland, commuter car roots anymore. At first I was thinking RX8, that chassis is such a bargain right now, but it will blow up and make you sad. Then I started thinking NC Miata, very cheap like the RX8, but very reliable. For the fun of it I decided to check out S2000s, and the first one I saw was a CR listed for $60k and decided to keep shopping for Miatas.
