"the last thing you want to do is a bunch of edits, and then have to wait to see if it acctually looks the way you want it to look." ... reminded me of how it used to be all the time. Layering three images, adding fx, trying to time it to the music ,while only seeing black on playback (AVID)... and having to wait render to see the result. 6K was unheard of, we were only editing in SD ... Rendering meant it was time for a coffee break... we had a lot of those.

Personally I have the base Model M3 MacBook Pro and I edit 4K24p HEVC 10-bit 4:2:2 shot in S.Log.3 and S.Cinetone on the Sony A6700 and it works like a breeze, what I did was getting a 2TB LaCie SSD from Apple and Optimise/Transcode all my HEVC media into Apple ProRes 422 and edit straight from the SSD and it works like a charm. The new SSD's they use will last you long so you don't have to worry about swap memory at all, if it ever feels sluggish editing 8K footage maybe, you can go to FinalCut Pro and turn on Better Performance Issue or just use Proxies. For me it works flawlessly, I am also a software developer and I use Xcode a lot with a bunch of tabs open and it never slows down on me.

MacBook Pro 16 inches (m3 pro chip - base model), is it a good choice for editing 4K drone videos and 3D photometry softwares? I am starting and m3max is too expensive for me at this time. I prefer the 16 inches.
@jaredmeche6325 Жыл бұрын
This falls under the "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" category. 8GB ram doesn't take much to go over with photo and video editing. Once it does that, it's using your m.2 SSD as overflow. That's a lot of unwanted read/write on your non-replaceable internal storage.
@tudoriustin2211 ай бұрын
That’s true but I have the M2 MacBook Air 13” with 8GB Ram and 512GB ssd, and I used it for SLog3 10-Bit footage shot on FX-30 in XAVC S / H264 and HEVC and I added about 14 effects when color grading and editing, stacked 4K clips and even if it used the NAND ssd for the past year, and it wrote 4TB to the SSD using swap, keeping in mind that the TBW (total bytes written) on the 256GB Slower base SSD is 150TB, but it can go far more than that. And for me I still have 100% life percentage. For people that want to know what app I used, I used DriveDX for in depth reports. And macOS is amazing at memory management. For me it’s been no problem, now I ordered the base model M3 MBP as my first MBP and I don’t regret it even a slight bit due to its active cooling and ports.

I think the Max is not really a good investment for a real pro workflow, not because of the SOC performance, but because when you want to use your laptop for a big production you´ll come across with a lot of issues, mainly connecting your very expensive machine to a SAN or NAS most of them are at least on 10GbE and dongles are unstable on Mac OS right now, they overheat after a couple of hours of work, randomly disconnect and you have to spend a lot of times and frustrations to find one that work just to be broken again by a OS or NLE software update. So my recommendation would be get an affordable laptop (mac or windows doesnt matter) and for real professional work get something that can be easily (and natively) connected to a fast network; the Mac Sudio it´s cheaper for the Max performance, comes with the right amount of RAM and it has 10GbE port integrated. You´ll be happier editing on that machine, with thermal headroom, more connectivity ports for monitors, drives, headphones and speakers and you can still use your laptop for all the other stuff while working. My two cents.

@sergiosanchez20128 ай бұрын
@@VincentForDesign if you get money from editing videos, then you´re on the professional spectrum. My point is that the macs as expensive as they are and how they are marketed as the ultimate creative professional workstation at the end is very limited when you get a big job, and a cheaper non professional gaming laptop most of times has the proper hardware to perform in those enviroments much better than the Macbook pro. Yes they are good for editing but in all honesty any system since haswell has been great at that.
@VincentForDesign8 ай бұрын
@@sergiosanchez2012 can you recommend any gaming laptop you mentioned? Because I have been a MacBook user for the last 10 years using company’s laptop, but I might go solo in the coming months, so am looking for something that would allow me to keep editing videos without breaking a hole in my wallet.

@@VincentForDesign The MSI Stealth 16 Studio with the RTX 4070 is a great option. Also the Lenovo 16" Legion Pro 5i 16IRX they are both around $1,600 US and Will perform great. If You want something more robust and You don't mind the weight the ASUS studiobook Oled 16 is amazing it costs around $2400 but You get touch screen, heptic touchpad with pen input and the Oled screen is amazing.
@maarcin1942 ай бұрын
You are right about 10GbE. Such internet speed is needed on the NAS side to be able to deliver material to many editors simultaneously and allow them to work. However, a single editor will only need a 2.5GbE connection, which is not as problematic as 10GbE. So having a MacBook connected to the dock (e.g. ivanky with 2.5GbE) there should be no problems like you are writing about, and on the MacBook side there will be no difference between working on 10GbE and 2.5GbE. So the only real advantage of Mac Studio is a better cooling system that will be able to show itself, for example, during long rendering. Which does not mean, of course, that Mac Studio is not better, because it is. But Macbook Pro has the advantage of being mobile. I myself am facing a dilemma about what to buy - Mac Studio M2 Max or Macbook Pro M3 Max.

I have to say I absolutely agree with your thoughts overall, but especially on the memory- it is really disappointing from Apple that the base model starts at 8gb memory. This, in my specific case, has absolutely been enough of a reason for me to just stick with PC and Premiere Pro- because as much as I want to stick it to Adobe, I just can't justify spending nearly $2000 for a machine with 1/4 the memory of my desktop pc. FANTASTIC Video, thanks so much for your hard work and insights. You're a great video creator!

It is pretty remarkable how much performance Apple can get from 8GB of RAM. Anyone whose work mostly involves office apps and a web browser, the base 14" will serve them well for years and years. Video editors would definitely benefit from moving up to the M3 Pro. Not only do you more than double the RAM, you get more cores, more external monitors and the 3rd TB4 port.

Appreciate the content, but these kind of tests are only beneficial for maybe youtubers or streamers who for some weird reason want to be cutting raw camera files. I have been cutting features for over ten years and I can guarantee you, no one in any studio is cutting with r3d or any raw camera files. It’s just unnecessary when dealing with hundreds of hours worth of footage. So yea, these machines are good for what they are and if you are not trying to do anything fancy editorial wise, they are pretty good value.

ESP something as demanding as video editing. Like I'm sure it can be done if one throws enough money at it, but that's with just about anything. I couldn't imagine not having custom PC with a nice large screen that can handle just about anything for the backbone of my business. Any customer who thinks shooting everything, having it edited on site and expects a finished, mastered copy on the same day making a 2k laptop necessary, wouldn't be a customer I'd wanna work with anyway

I see where you are coming from, but just the portability of laptops means you could work just about anywhere you really wanted to. Then that's where more expensive laptops come in.
