Is The Bentgrass Ready for A Mow? // Cut, Roll and Dew Removal

The Bentgrass Golf Green is now looking ready for a mow. Next video I shoot I will be mowing the golf green at around 8mm. It's currently sitting at 20mm.

Those water rollers need an adjustable handle. So low for talk bloke like me. I bought a sweet vintage cast iron roller with a pendulum weight in it from my local golf course a few years back. Paid $50 for it, weighs about 90kg. Epic

Really enjoy your content . I used to work as a PGA Club Professional at The Honors Course in Ooltewah Tennessee . The owner , John T. Lupton , was a big donor to the Greens Section of the USGA . The Greens Superintendent who is now retired received the highest honor from the USGA and was a great greens keeper . One of his secrets was everyday he had a small pocket knife he would stick in the green which gave him a good idea of the amount of moisture in the greens . In 30 years he went through several pocket knifes . He also would top-dress the greens with a very fine sand during warmer months ever so often . The club has been host to several USGA events and today like many golf courses in the southern US they have gone the way of hybrid bermuda grass greens . Good Luck and I will be watching .

Ben. In future will you be using a drag Matt to take the dew off your putting surface or build a stainless frame attached to the John Deere? Intrigued to see. I look forward to seeing what fertigation will be used. As the volume would be huge. Would you just plumb up your own system with 44 Gallon tanks in the shed just near the pump? Great work. Your using newer bentgrass cultivars, these are known to germinate faster than penncross, a4 a1 etc. It's usually around 7 days for germination

From my experience of new bentgrass greens (18 hole resurfacing, and a new course construction) start mowing as early as you can, we started at 6mm and went down 1mm every 7-10 days depending on growth rate

Here's my opinion, always use a walk mower if possible, it's less stress on the grass whether the grass is mature or only weeks old....so even in the future walking mowing is smart, and it's less compaction. The smaller stripes look a lot better by far, but this is coming from someone that had to walk mow fairways one time

​@@LawnTips awesome. Spraying bentgrass to early with PGRs before 6 to 8 weeks old is really bad. It just sounded like you were going to do the green also. There was a study on turf type grasses spraying fresh germinated seed with PGRs from different rate, .I couldn't find the study yesterday or today yet, the ryegrass is still new and you just seeded again in places, overseed. I would of waited personally but that's just me. Just trying to share my wealth of knowledge also. Did you ever think about copying the 16th green exactly? With each slope etc to a certain point? I'll be moving soon and I think that will be my goal with the next backyard course even though it will be sitting on 50 acres. Been thinking I'll do 13th green with a few changes for more pin locations

Everything is looking good, and progressing well. Cut the surround when it's dry and without the bucket, so the clippings can start forming a thatch layer. You don't need to use the bucket on the green right away either... those clippings are good. no rush to topdress the whole thing right away either... you'll just be dulling your blades faster, for no great payoff. Wait until it's thickened up and you can't see the base sand anymore. Roll prior to cutting for awhile too. Aside from that.. just keep on doing what you're doing. Get a nice long dew whip. ;)

You're lucky it won't have to deal with 6 months of winter, with -30c temps and 3-4 ft of snow cover. LOL your winters will be easy as cake for the bentgrass.
